Chapter 10: The Grand Grossberg
Last time during Ace Prosecutor Edgeworth gets stuck behind a traffic incident which means he can't get to the court house on time however Ash Grey who was already at the courthouse is asked to take the trial in Edgeworths place against Marvin Grossberg, and now in the third courtroom the saga unfolds
-Trial Start-
" , if you would remind us of the day one status and information regarding the case so far with your opening statement."
"Of course, the defendant Jeff Hoban is charged with murder in the first degree, the victim being twenty-seven year old Amy Smith, during the first day of the trial due to it was determined that while had been near the scene of the crime, the evidence and forensics taken from the crime scene were inconclusive with the defendants fingerprints and DNA" Grey then looks back towards the judge to receive his response.
"So then , is there any issue with the case so far that you'd like to examine?" the judge said.
"The first day ended with an apparent witness to the crime giving testimony, if possible I'd like to have the witness testify and have testify again if it's possible."
"Your Honour, i don't believe questioning again will yield any results but i would like to cross examine the witness to free of any suspicion" Grossberg says confidently as if he knows the judge should agree with him.
" , The defence makes a valid point and i feel the courts time would be better used question the witness but I'd like to ask your reason for question the defendant".
"Well your honour, have you heard of the one day changes everything theory?" Grey replies with a grin on his face.
"I can't say i have , i do hope you're not wasting the court's time but please give us an explanation of this theory" the judge commands.
"Well what the theory basically suggests is people will react to questioning or stimuli differently on different days and that has to do with things such as mood, previous interactions and even the location they are in, questioned the defendant 3 days ago during the first day of the trial and according to my notes here, he had an almost emotional breakdown in the court because he couldn't believe he was been blamed for the murder, due to this he should be a little more helpful with any questions we ask him today" grey finishes as if he'd rehearsed the whole speech.
" , I've been a defence lawyer for going on nearly thirty years and I've never heard such drivel in all my life" Grossberg shouts as if he had been offended by the theory.
" , I'll have to disagree with you there sir, the theory is a proven technique that works, i myself employed it whilst working previously." Grey replies with a smirk craved into his face
"Well after hearing 's theory I'm actually somewhat intrigued to see if it holds any weight in this courtroom and as such i shall allow 's request and order for to be questioned here in ten minutes and we shall take a short recess so that both the defence and prosecution can prepare to question the defendant and following another recess we shall then question the witness" the judge declares before bringing down his gavel to declare the recess.
Location: Prosecutors Lobby-Courtroom three
Time: 10:53am
After entering the prosecutors lobby of courtroom three, Ash Grey decides to call Edgeworth to tell him how the trials going
"Grey, don't tell me you lost already?" Edgeworth says hinting a tone of sarcasm.
"Yeah, in your dreams, well like you suggested to yourself in the court notes, i made a push to question again, and that man Grossburger or whatever he's called isn't doing me any favours by trying to skip the question section, is the guy always like that or does he not like me or something" grey replies with a serious tone.
"Good work on the re-question Grey, i figured the best way to have done it would've been to push on the lack of evidence and ask for him to re-questioned in order to find out some more information relating to this, but anyway i know this case is difficult for your return but I'm trusting that you'll manage to put it into the position where you'll be able to help find the truth, Grey just a friendly bit of advice, if grossberg's haemorrhoids start acting up you've got him on the defensive that's probably the best time to take the information you need from the defendant's answers, anyway it looks like the traffic might move soon, so I'll contact you later" edgeworth finishes what he was saying before hanging up the phone, and armed with some new knowledge grey proceeds to re-enter the courtroom with a better idea of the defence lawyer he's dealing with
Location: Courtroom Three
Time 11:02am
"I hope both sides have had the required time to work out their questions for the defendant, as it stands you will need to produce results quickly in order to make sure you aren't wasting the defendant and this court's time." The judge finishes before slowly leaning back in his chair
"Your Honour, with all due respect, I'd prefer if people didn't question my theories which have been garnered from years of experience before seeing them in action, but i do realise that while in the past my name carried weight and influence, now it's merely a name that goes to my face, watch now as the first act begins upon this site of honour and justice." Grey finishes with a gusto that surprises the courtroom audience
"Well said , with that sorted, are you ready to question the defendant?" the judge asks
"Of Course, The Prosecution asks that testify about the events of the night in question, moreover i like to ask him about his location and his connection to victim as well as his links to the local area and for my final action in this scene, i will ask him about his connections to the witness, a miss April Raines and if he knows about her connection to the victim."
"Prosecutor Grey, as the defence, i can assure you the majority of your questions were answered during the first trial day, so why do you feel the need to ask the questions again?" Grossberg finishes huffing slightly as he does so.
"Well Grossburger, that's simple enough to explain, the transcript of questions asked is left in the court record as part of information collection and after giving it a quick read, the first thing i figured out before this trial began was the questions from the prosecutions side were asked in a certain way which i feel works if the defendant isn't hiding a massive secret or some large detail about himself but the way i work is i ask questions that WILL get definite answers and will leave no stone unturned."
"Bailiff, could you bring in now" the judge asks knowing the argument between Grey and Grossberg could go on all day.
-Chapter End-
