Chapter 10
It had been a week since she saw him, he made sure to leave before her, and come home when she was asleep. She didn't know what she did wrong, but she wanted to get to the bottom of it. He just told her he was in love with her, literally one week ago, and now he couldn't even face her. Something screamed Seiya, but she wanted to hear it from him.
She hid in his room, waiting for him to return from his run. Normally they ran together, but he made sure to be up before her and went running alone. He came barreling into his room, headphones in his ears, and shirtless.
She sat up in his bed and he jumped, pulling his headphones out, "Usagi what are you doing?"
"Usagi?"
He furrowed his eyebrows and set his phone down, "That's your name?"
She gulped and scooted towards the end of the bed, planting her feet on the ground, "Right...how was your run?"
Grabbing a towel, he dabbed his face and chest, "Good, it's hot out there."
"Too bad they wait until the end of May to open the pool instead of the beginning, huh?"
He chuckled and threw the towel in his basket, "Yeah."
Please leave Usako….this hurts too much.
"So what's going on Mamoru?"
He furrowed his eyebrows and looked at her, "What are you talking about?"
Don't do this. I'm begging you.
"Don't play dumb Mamoru...this is the first time I've seen you in a week. The first time since you told me you love me."
He tensed from head to toe at the mention of him confessing his love to her. Change the subject off of you.
"You and Seiya have history."
Crossing her legs, she raised an eyebrow, "So? What does that mean?"
Moving his hands to his hips, he stuttered, and looked to the ceiling for the words. "We...we have known each other for a little over ten months? You two have known each other for w-what, three or four years?"
She stared up at him confused, "Why does that matter?"
He waved his hands out in front of him, "Because it's not rational! Two people can't be in love, real love, after such a small window of time."
Standing up, she reached for his hands, but he moved away, "Not everything is logical! Not everything can be found in a book and backed by science Mamoru."
"I just think things aren't finished there."
"You know me! You've learned more about me in less than a year, than Seiya ever did."
"Usagi, please….stop."
"No, you stop! It's Usako, remember?!"
He shook his head and walked to the kitchen for a glass of water.
She followed and forced him to look at her, "So you don't love me?"
Mamoru set down the glass and moved his hands to his hips, "I was drunk Usagi…"
Of course I love you!
Tears filled her eyes, "What's my favorite color?"
Trick question...you have two, pink and white. He remained quiet and avoided her eyes.
"What's my favorite food?"
You'd eat cake for every meal if allowed.
Her voice started to crack and her hands became fists at her sides, "What's my favorite animal, Mamo?!"
Bunny. "You didn't get closure with him Usa, can you really be over someone without closure?"
She let out a loud grunt before shoving past him, "You're just so smart, aren't you? Everything by the books right?! Well you know what Mamoru, you can go to hell!"
Once he heard the front door slam, he let the mask slip, and let the tears he held back go. He felt like he was suffocating and everything was caving in around him. Did all friendships endure this much pain for each other? Would Seiya endure something like this for him? How could losing what he's had for the last ten months, hurt more than the thought of losing fifteen years of friendship?
Usako...
O.o.O.o.O
Rei stroked her hair as she laid in her lap, sobbing. Minako sat in front of her with a box of tissues, "Oh Usa."
She cried harder and grabbed a tissue from the box, covering her eyes with it. "Don't…"
Ami laid a hand on her calf, "Don't what, Usagi?"
"Please. None of you say 'I told you so'." She hiccuped and grabbed another tissue.
Mako walked over and sat next to Minako, "We would never do that. Do you want to tell us what happened?"
She sat up and wiped her nose, "Seiya found Mamoru in my bed last weekend."
Ami gasped and blushed, "In your bed…"
Usagi sniffled and avoided their gazes "Yes, and it wasn't the first time we slept together."
All four girls looked at each other, but stayed quiet.
"Mamoru told me last Saturday that he was in love with me."
Minako gasped and grabbed her knee.
"Now after the whole Seiya ordeal, he's been avoiding me, and when I confronted him he basically told me to go back to Seiya."
Rei wrapped her arm around Usagi and rubbed her shoulder.
"And Seiya has still been calling and texting."
Mako looked at her confused, "Wait, even after catching you in bed with his friend, he's still reaching out to you."
She whimpered and nodded, "He wants me to go on a date with him, he wants to talk about us."
"I think you should do it," all four girls turned and stared at Minako. "What? I think you should! There's a lot of history there. Plus it will either give you closure or allow you to see if there is something still there."
Tears continued to roll down her cheeks, "Mina...I'm in love with Mamoru."
All four girls gave her a sympathetic look before hugging her.
O.o.O.o.O
Usagi sighed and pushed open the condo door. Walking through the hallway she noticed Mamoru reading on the couch. She knew she looked like hell, her buns were askew, and her nose and eyes were red and puffy. Setting her keys on the entryway table and kicking off her shoes, she made her way to the kitchen.
His eyes were burning a hole into her back as she gulped a glass of water down. Putting the glass in the sink, she walked into the living room, and grabbed her magazine from the coffee table.
Has she been crying?
"Are you okay?"
She glanced at him and started for her bedroom, "I'm fine."
He sat up and closed his book, "Wait!"
Stopping, she turned and looked at him, "What Mamoru?"
"Are you...I mean what..um what happened to you?"
She sighed and clutched her magazine, "I went to my girlfriend's house and hung out with my friends. They told me I should go out with my ex-boyfriend and I came home. Anything else?"
He avoided her eyes and folded his hands out in front of him as he leaned on his knees, "I think you should."
Her mouth dropped open and she glared at him, "What?"
"I think you should go out with Seiya," standing up he put his hands in his pockets, "it will let you see what might still be there." He walked to his bedroom and shut the door.
She wanted to follow him and yell, but the tears were hitting her again. It was all so easy for him to go back to the way he was before, the man she despised. Going into her bedroom, she slammed the door, and laid on the bed. She stared at her phone and contemplated her next move. Mamoru got what he wanted from her and was back to his old self, maybe she should go back too. Opening her texts, she pulled up Seiya's.
Usagi: "Dinner, tomorrow 7 pm, your choice."
Plugging her phone in she rolled over and cried. How could everything change so much in seven days...
O.o.O.o.O
She laid in bed, unwilling to move. The sun had woken her, but she could hear movement in the living room. Tonight was her date with Seiya and after spending all last night crying, she knew she had some work to do on her face.
"Mamoru!"
Hearing Motoki whisper yell Mamoru's name, she sat up. Her legs pushed over the edge of the bed and she tiptoed to her door. Pressing her ear to the door, she tried to hear their quiet argument.
"I have to Motoki."
"Why?!"
"I can't stay here, it…"
"Hurts too much? To be here, in the same home."
Opening the door she peered out at the two men, Motoki's face was scrunched with anger and Mamoru's...has he been crying?
"You're moving?"
She watched him gulp and move his eyes to Motoki's. Stepping out into the living room, in her pjs, she approached him with her arms crossed. "Mamoru?"
Motoki touched her shoulder and gave her a small smile, "We're just discussing living arrangements, nothing is set."
Her jaw dropped and her eyebrows raised, "Let me get this straight, you were going to move, and not tell me?"
Mamoru shoved his hands in his jeans and stared at the floor, "I would have told you. My mind isn't made up."
Shaking her head, she let out a small scoff, "You were going to move in the middle of the night, probably change your number, and I would never hear or see from you again."
He remained silent and refused to meet her eyes.
Tilting her head, she tried making eye contact with him, "Am I wrong?"
"Usagi," Motoki tried pulling her away, "why don't I make you breakfast?"
"Stop!" She yanked her arm out of Motoki's hold, "I got it Mamoru, loud and clear. Please excuse me, I have a date to get ready for."
Stomping back to her bedroom, she slammed the door and flopped back down on her bed.
Motoki stared at Mamoru, shaking his head, "Sleep on it."
O.o.O.o.O
She walked up to the hostess stand and smiled, "Reservation under Seiya."
The hostess smiled back, "Perfect! Follow me right this way."
Clutching her wrap, she followed the hostess. She knew she looked good tonight, she watched earlier how Mamoru's jaw dropped when she walked out in her backless red dress, and Motoki wished her luck with the biggest blush on his face.
The hostess stopped at a table, she saw Seiya stand and drink her in from head to toe. "Usa," he hugged her and pulled back her chair for her. She felt relief when his hand left her bare back, it was too much, too soon, for him to touch her skin. It felt unnatural; whereas, with Mamoru…stop thinking about him.
"Hi! Were you waiting long?" She sat down and picked up her menu.
He sat across from her and shook his head, "No, no, only a few minutes."
"So why this restaurant?"
Grinning he grabbed one of her hands, "Because it's your favorite restaurant."
She tried to control her facial expressions and put on a fake smile. I HATE this restaurant, always have.
After the waiter filled her wine glass, she was quick to gulp half down. Seiya laughed softly, and handed the waiter their menus, "I'll be back with your food shortly."
Seiya nodded at him, "Thank you."
Usagi set her glass down and leaned her elbows on the table, "So...see any good brunettes lately?"
He cleared his throat and grabbed his glass, "I haven't seen anyone."
She watched him take a sip from his glass, "I bet."
Setting down his glass, he leaned forward, "Usa, I've wanted no one but you. I made a drunken mistake. I've been trying to tell you for months, how much I fucked up, and that I still love you. I want a fresh start baby."
Baby? No. No. No. It felt like the room was spinning and bile was hitting the back of her throat. A fresh start? With the man who ripped out her heart and trust?!
"Hey Seiya, what's my favorite food?"
He chuckled and touched her elbow, "What?"
"What's my favorite color?"
Leaning back, he furrowed his eyebrows, but didn't drop his smile.
"My favorite animal?"
"What is going on Usa? What is this about?"
She shook her head and grabbed her glass, "Nothing, don't worry about it."
He didn't press further, once their meals arrived, they ate in silence and she finished her second glass of wine. He handed the waiter his card and touched her hand, "You want to go get a drink?"
Did she? They haven't even really talked...the girls told her to get closure.
"That...sound fine." The waiter returned with his card, and Seiya stood up and waited next to her.
A flash of Mamoru holding out his hand to her flashed in her mind.
Standing up, she walked with Seiya to his car, "Did you drive?"
"Oh no, I took a cab."
He smiled at her and held open her door, "Perfect."
Forcing a smile, she slid into the passenger seat. Once he shut the door, her smile dropped, turning into a thin irritated line. Now I wish I drove.
It didn't take long for them to reach their next destination. Which to her dissatisfaction, it was the same bar her and Mamoru went to, after the escape room and a couple times after that. Walking up to the bar, Seiya ordered them a couple shots.
"I've missed you Usa." He stroked her cheek and she stared up into his dark blue eyes.
Her focus turned to the music picking up in the background, booming loud around them, 'When she don't really feel like sleeping, sleeping through the night.'
She grinned and grabbed his hand, "Let's dance!"
Seiya's smile faded and he shook his head.
"C'mon!" She pulled on his hand.
"No Usagi, I'm serious, I don't want to."
She started to jump and sing the lyrics, "Spending all my money just to make you feel pretty! The sky ran out of stars-"
Seiya yanked his hand from hers, "Cut it out Usagi!"
Her smile faded, leaning against the bar, she asked for another shot.
"I'm sorry, I just...you know how I feel about dancing."
Mamoru hates dancing...but…
"Seiya…"
He wrapped his hand behind the back of her head and forced his lips on hers. When she tried to get free and protest, he held her still and ran his tongue against hers. Grabbing his shoulders she pushed him back and stared at him, "Seiya...I can't do this. You're...you're forcing this. You know this isn't the same, we're not the same."
"Usa...don't do this. We were happy! We can be happy again. Mamoru is NEVER going to give you kids, he's never going to marry you. I will give you all of that."
She had to choke back her laugh, "You're kidding right?"
Seiya's eyes dropped to the floor and anger sparked inside her.
"Did you talk to him? What did you say!"
Shaking his head, he lifted his eyes and sighed.
Glaring at him, she reached for her wrap, "You've been friends for fifteen years, you should know all he's ever wanted was a family of his own. He is or was happy! I was happy! You owe me Seiya, to leave it alone." Grabbing her wrap she walked out of the bar, leaning against the wall, she took off her heels and ran towards her condo.
~*~*~Four Months Ago~*~*~
They were giggling with their wine glasses in hand, "Okay tell me your biggest secret."
Mamoru looked over at her and laughed louder, "What?!"
Usagi pouted and sat up on her knees, on the couch, "Come onnnnnnnnn tell me."
He set his glass down, "Why do I have to go first?"
She took another sip before setting her glass down, "Because I have no secrets, I'm an open book."
Snorting he covered his face, "Of course you are."
Grabbing his arm, she pulled one hand away from his face, and stared at him, "Pwwwweeeeaaassssseeee."
Sighing he leaned forward and stared over at her through his bangs, "Okay….so you know about my past."
She nodded and didn't say a word.
"Well, all I've ever wanted. All I still want is a family of my own. When I was younger it was parents...of course. Now, I want a wife and kids of my own."
Holding her chin in her palm against the back of the couch, she didn't take her eyes off of him, "Thank you for sharing with me. You're going to make an amazing dad."
He gave her a soft smile and grabbed his glass, "Okay, it's your move."
Pouting, she leaned towards the coffee table, and moved one of her chess pieces, "I'm borrrrrred again!"
"Um Usa, that was my piece."
She glared over at him, and flipped the chessboard off the coffee table, "Now it's the floor's."
He leaned back and wrapped his arms around his stomach, laughing until a few tears rolled down his cheeks.
O.o.O.o.O
You can do this…
She took a deep breath, unlocked the door and stepped inside. Turning on the lights, she found Mamoru sitting on the couch, with a glass of scotch on the coffee table.
"Bad day?"
"You could say that." He looked up and noticed her lipstick was smudged, pinching the bridge of his nose, he picked up his scotch, "So….you and Seiya back together now?"
"N—why would you assume that?" Touching his mouth, he points at her.
Seiya really was aggressive with his kiss. She wiped at her lips and shook her head, "No, we're not." She sat down on the couch with her leg pressed against his, taking his glass, she downed the rest of his scotch. "Bleh, oh no, no, no. That is not my drink." Sticking her tongue out, she shook her head, and scrunched her eyes causing a small laugh to escape Mamoru's lips.
"Then why'd you drink it? I could have told you that it's not your taste."
"Liquid courage? Look Mamoru...I love Seiya." Before she could finish, he groaned and stood up. She grabbed his arm and yanked him back down, "Stop and listen! I love Seiya and he was a big part of my adult life, but that's where it stops. I am not IN love with Seiya. Someone else accidentally won me over."
He turned towards her with wide eyes, but he couldn't speak.
"Mamo, what's my favorite color?"
"Usako…"
Tightening her hold on his arm, she glared at him, "Just answer the damn question."
"Pink and white."
She smiled and leaned towards him, "Favorite animal?"
His answer came out breathless, "Bunny."
"Favorite food?"
He leaned in so his lips were brushing hers, "Cake."
She pressed her lips against his before whispering against them, "Favorite flower?"
"Rose. Red roses."
She moved her hands to the back of his head and slid her tongue passed his lips. He pulled back and stood up, walking to the other side of the living room, "Usa…"
"Mamo do you not want me?" There was hurt written all over her face and it was almost enough to bring him to his knees.
He shoved his hands in his hair and pulled, "God...yes Usako I want you, I want to run away with you and pretend I had you first but I DIDN'T! Seiya had you first and you had years of a relationship and how can I do that to him?!"
She stood up and wrapped her arms around her waist, "But it's not like we betrayed him."
"I did! I betrayed him, you are the ex-girlfriend so you owe him nothing, but I am the friend and this shouldn't have happened." He motioned between the two of them and closed his eyes.
"Seiya aside...would you be with me?"
Opening his eyes, he stared into her wide blue ones, "You're the first woman….that I have.." He moved his eyes to the floor and gulped, "That I have ever loved...real love."
Twisting her hands in front of her, she made a small step towards him, "I know I'm asking a lot of you. I mean, how can I compete with fifteen years of friendship, but I'm in love with you Mamoru."
His eyes jumped back to hers and his breathing caught in his throat, "He was going to propose…"
A startled look crossed her face and all movements froze, "What?"
Looking back down, he sighed, "He bought a ring and all, he was going to propose, and then I—"
Closing the distance between them, she pushed him against the wall, covering his mouth with her own. Pulling back a short distance, she stared up at him, "If I wanted to marry Seiya, I would be married to him. Mamoru...dammit. This is my choice, not yours, not Seiya's. The only question is...do you want to be with me?"
Grabbing the back of her thighs he lifted her up and slid his back down the wall, setting her in his lap. Her fingers pulled at his hair and her tongue moved between his lips. Pulling her tighter against him, he massaged her tongue with his own.
Leaning her head back, she stared down at him, until he opened his eyes, "I'm not saying this will be easy...and I can't imagine how hard it will be on your side of things, but I want this with you Mamo. I want to be with you."
He rubbed his thumb against her cheek, "Usako...this is going to hurt like hell…" Swallowing slowly, she closed her eyes. "But it hurt more being without you. I can't give you up again. I can't because I am completely in love with you."
Grinning, she kissed him again, mumbling against his lips, "I love you Mamo."
He leaned flat against the wall and pulled her with him. Moving his mouth back away from hers, he searched her eyes, "So we're doing this?"
She smiled and nodded, "Yes."
His fingers found her hair, "Me and you? Together. No one else?"
Running her hands up his chest, she landed on his shoulders, "You're the one who tried to bring in someone else soooo."
His head dropped and she grabbed his cheeks, making him look at her again. "Just me and you Mamo. My boyfriend."
Moving his hands down and around her waist he grinned at her, "Boyfriend huh?"
She rolled her eyes, "Take me to your bed, boyfriend."
He grabbed around her waist, and pushed up the wall. Carrying her to his bedroom, he kicked the door shut before laying them down on his bed. She grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled his mouth against hers. He slid his hands up her bare thighs, pushing her dress up with him.
Moving her head back from his, she pulled his shirt off, and recaptured his lips. He moaned once his hand reached her panties, finding them already wet. Sucking against his tongue, she fumbled with his belt.
This would be the first time he didn't feel guilt in the back of his mind, he knew he told Seiya he would end things with her but she made her choice. He knew what he was sacrificing, but this wasn't something he would give up again, he couldn't. This time he would be completely in the moment with her.
Helping her lean up from the bed, he pulled her dress over her head, leaving just her panties. He ran his eyes down her body before looking back into hers. Pushing his jeans and boxers off in one movement, he crawled back up her body. His thumb rubbed along her cheek and he didn't break his eyes away from hers. Running his hand away from her face, down her body, he rubbed his fingers against her through her panties again.
Her eyes fluttered close, letting out a small moan, and he moved his lips against her ear, "Usako, don't close your eyes."
He wanted to watch and remember everything about this moment, their first real moment finally together without secrets or hiding their relationship.
Once her eyes were open, he sat back and pulled her panties down her legs, throwing them next to her dress. Settling between her legs, he watched her face as he pushed into her. They both gasped, but didn't take their eyes from one another. Lacing their fingers together, he pressed them into the bed, and pulled back out to the tip before thrusting back into her.
She wrapped her legs around his waist, and leaned her head up to kiss along his neck. Groaning he slid his free hand to her hip while maintaining a slow pace in and out of her. He felt her fingers squeeze his, letting him know she wanted more. Giving into the pleasure of her wrapped around him, he closed his eyes, and moved his hips at a faster pace.
Her head fell back against the bed and she moaned out his name. Moving his mouth down to her right breast, he twirled his tongue around it while grinding his hips against hers. He was close, but he knew she was too, from the way her thighs were shaking around him.
Lifting his head back from her breast, he watched her face waiting to see her fall over the edge with him. After a couple more thrusts, her back arched into him, and she called out his name. He could feel her tightening around him, making him groan out her name as he met his end inside her.
Resting his forehead against her shoulder, they both took a minute to catch their breath.
"Me and you Mamo."
Looking up at her he smiled, "Me and you Usako."
