A/N: I got so excited I got reviews I felt inspired to write. Thank you so much. Here is some mother and daughter action.
Lorelai woke up to the sound of her furry alarm clock. She turned it off only to hear the annoying voice of young Justin Bieber playing on her cell phone. She tried to reach for it, succeeding only to fall on the carpet ground with a thud. Someone was playing a joke on her. Of course, she did indeed had to get up early to go to a meeting at the Inn, but she was going to have "Baby" stuck in her mind for eternity. She was going to kill Luke later. Although, if she had to think about it, it was rather impressive that Luke even knew who Just Bieber was or the fact he just really paid attention to her pop culture references.
She looked down at her belly. It felt so different being pregnant at this moment in her life than it felt when she was 16. She felt secure and safe. She took a shower and dressed up in a silk silver blouse, a black blazer, a grey midi skirt and comfortable hills. Her belly was not showing yet. Impressively, she still had half an hour to kill before her meeting.
She got downstairs only to find her daughter sitting at the kitchen chair, dishevelled hair, with her elbows resting at the table and both hands holding her head in desperation, looking at nothing in particular. It looked like she had been sitting in that position for a while.
"What is going on, hun?" Lorelai asked, concerned.
Rory looked up as if seeing her for the first time. "Hi mom, I didn't see you there." She said startled.
"Are you ok?" Lorelai tried again.
"Yes... No… I don't know". Rory shook her head like if she was getting rid of leaves stuck in her hair. "I think I messed things up. Hugely."
"I doubt that." Lorelai affirmed with tranquillity. "Why won't you try and explain it to your wonderful mother?"
"Jess came back." Rory admitted before she could regret it. She knew her mother would know what that meant, what Jess meant.
"Ow." Lorelai sighed. "Okay, and?"
"Well, we've caught up. And he is great, nothing like before. He is talking. In addition, he wrote a book. I mean, I always knew she had it in him. Then Logan appeared and got angry. And now he left and I don't know what to do." Rory said it all as fast as everything was playing in her mind.
"Who left?" Lorelai questioned her.
"Hum?" Rory felt confused.
"Who were you referring to when you said he left and you didn't know what to do?" Lorelai wondered.
A pair of brown eyes appeared in her thoughts, but she could not think that. It wasn't possible to feel the same way after so many years, right?
"Logan, of course. He was mad and he won't return my calls. I mean… Jess also left, but I think he is still here in Stars Hollow. I don't know." She tried to work things out, but everything just got more blurry when she tried.
"And what does it feel to have Jess back in your life? Why did you feel you needed to catch up with him? The last time you saw him you were very decisive." Lorelai passed a hand through her daughter's thin hair, placing a lock behind her ear.
"This time it felt different. When he appeared I felt genuinely happy to see him, you know. I mean, it was like all the anger I had once felt for him was finally over. The only memories that stuck were the good ones we have shared. Suddenly, I needed closure". 'And his eyes…' that she thought and kept to herself. She took another breath before continuing.
"Then he invited me to his book signing, it was all a surprise. And he could not have done without me. However, it was all Jess. And it felt familiar somehow." Rory sighed; happy she could be honest with her mother, but especially, with herself.
Lorelai considered this for a few seconds, digesting it. She knew Jess had changed from the bad angry kid he was when he dated her daughter as a teenager. He remembered what Luke had told her and remembered him at Liz and TJ's wedding. Nevertheless, she also knew he had hurt Rory as no other guy had ever had. Lorelai had always felt threaten by Jess because of the intensity of Rory's feeling and actions towards him. He had gotten them into an accident where she broke her wrist. Even though he did not mean to, he had put her daughter's life at risk. Moreover, there was the time Rory skipped school to see him and missed her graduation. She forgave her, but it would always be stuck in her heart like something was missing from her memory.
"It's ok to care for a guy you have once loved, Rory. What you need to figure out is if this feeling is only care because of the history you have shared or if this is a new feeling. A present feeling. You need to figure it out for you and for Logan." Lorelai said understandably.
"I think you are reading too much into this, mom. Jess has been gone for years. He is just someone I am always going to care about. And I was curious to see how his life had worked out. I am with Logan now. Jess and I were never right for each other." Rory was determined, or at least tried to be.
Lorelai shook her head a little bit, as if she knew something she was not telling. She knew her daughter better than she knew herself. Rory had always had a hard time admitting her romantic feelings. Somehow, Lorelai felt this Jess's story was not over yet. All the same, she did not push it, she was aware Rory need a time to process and accept what was going on inside of her.
Lorelai moved through the kitchen searching for an apple.
Rory laughed at the scene: "You really are pregnant". Afterwards, she simply stated: "I am going for a walk, mom. I need to clear my head a little bit. Maybe read a little."
"Ok, sweetheart. You know I'm always here if you need me". Lorelai reassured her.
"I know". Rory nodded and confirmed.
Lorelai stared at her daughter leave and resumed her breakfast, thinking.
