Return
Chapter Nine
Danny stared Jazz down his gaze never wavering as he looked down his noes at his older sister. He had waited long enough, he was going to get his answers. For a moment they simply stared into each others eyes, Jazz searching his for something. For what, he didn't know. She seemed to find it though, letting out a long sigh before she turned her back to him.
"Why didn't you guys come to get me? Every single day I was in that thermos I was waiting for one of you to set me free." He said anger gripping his voice.
"It wasn't like that Danny, we tried." Jazz replied wrapping her arms around her shoulders.
"For some reason I seriously doubt that." Danny replied unable to keep the bitterness from his voice.
"Believe what you want but we tried! After mom and dad caught you we searched the entire house a hundred times! NO matter where we searched, what equipment we used, it was as if you never existed!" Jazz yelled whipping around to face him.
Danny almost took a step back at the rage and sorrow on her face. He had only seen that look once or twice in their lives. Seeing it now made him feel a little bad, he was about to apologize when she started talking again.
"You have no idea how much your disappearance affected everyone. Mom and dad both lost the will to hunt ghosts. They traveled everywhere convinced you'd run off. I tried to tell them you and Phantom were the same but they wouldn't believe me. Every day I prayed they would release you, or that they would believe me. To the end they refused to do either." This time her voice hitched as tears began rolling down her cheeks.
"What do you mean to the end?!" Danny asked in a rush dread pooling in his stomach.
Jazz didn't answer for a second turning she moved over to her desk and slid open a draw. For some reason Danny didn't want to know what was in there. Deep down in his heart he already knew the answer to the question.
Wiping a hand across her face Jazz pulled out a bundle of loose papers the edges frayed yellow with age. She stared at the front page for a second before setting down on the desk and slid it over to him. Danny hesitated before he reached over picking the small stack up. It was a newspaper, from nine years ago. Looking it over Danny froze his entire body seizing up as he read the headline. The paper began to shake as his emotions went all over the place.
Renowned Ghost Hunting Couple Perishes in Car Accident
Danny swallowed down a sob as he placed the paper back down on the desk. He didn't want to believe it. Taking in a couple deep breaths Danny fought to hold himself together as he turned to Jazz again.
"How?" his voice cracked as he spoke.
"They were out looking for you, it was raining and they didn't see the semi. The medical examiner said they felt no pain." Jazz replied her voice low.
"No pain, that makes everything better doesn't it!" Danny snarled slamming his fist down on the desk, "They capture me then go and get themselves killed looking for me?! How does that make any sense!"
Slamming his fist down on the desk Danny threw the paper's aside letting out a cry. His parents were dead. He would never see them again, never hear his dad get excited over a new ghost hunting weapon, or hear his mom scold his dad for forgetting to load the ghost blasting guns. He didn't know he was crying until Jazz wrapped her arms around him pulling him into a tight hug. Even as he wept he could feel her shoulders shaking. It was just the two of them now, the last two Fentons.
