Chapter 10: Compelled
(Elena POV)
"Can we talk?" Damon asked before entering the room. I had immediately retreated into a vacant room in the Salvatore house the moment Jeremy and Bonnie had left. I glanced up at Damon and shrugged.
"About?" I asked, watching him enter the room, before leaning against the door and folding his arms.
"Well, how do you feel, for starters?" He was staring at me intently.
"How am I supposed to feel? Considering that I'm a vampire now? And my best friend is into killing now? And at any moment I could kill my brother? And everyone is in this mess because of me?" I hadn't noticed I was crying until he was right in front of me, wiping my eyes.
"Hey," he said softly, grabbing my face. There was a look of genuine concern in his eyes. "Don't worry. We are going to figure this out. You're emotions are on overload right now…everything is amplified. Including your pain, your guilt…it's okay."
"No, it's not okay Damon!" Suddenly I was angry. It was instant. "Do you not see what's going on right now!? How can you even say that! Nothing is okay! Nothing will be okay!"
"Elena—" Stefan was suddenly there, next to Damon, with his hands on my shoulder. "You need to find a focus. Trust me, it will help. You cannot let your over amplified emotions take control of you. Focus on peace…on us fixing this. We can get Tyler back. You have to believe that Bonnie can make it happen. We need you to be calm and confident. You have to. Can you do that?"
I closed my eyes and tried to slow my breathing. I nodded. "You're right. You're right…I need to be calm…calm…"
"There you go…" Stefan crooned. When I opened my eyes, he was smiling. Damon's face had hardened, but he said nothing.
"Okay, so we need to figure a few things out. Does Bonnie need Klaus' body for the spell? How are we supposed to kill them without the white oak stake? And what—"
"Okay…now that you're calm, don't over think everything Elena. Just, relax." Stefan suggested.
"She's right though." Damon chimed in. His eyes darted from me to Stefan before he continued. "If Bennett needs Klaus, I gotta go get him. And if I do that, you'll need to stay and watch her."
"I don't need a babysitter, Damon."
"Yes, you do. You're not use to being a vampire. It's going to take some getting used to. The last thing we need is you feeling guilty for killing someone."
I feel silent at this, knowing he was right.
Stefan cleared his throat before looking at me. "Are you hungry? We have some more blood bags in the basement."
At the mention of blood, I instantly felt thirsty for it. How long had it been since I had last drank? I didn't think it had been too long but my thirsty told me otherwise.
"Yes please. That would be great." I replied, nodding.
"I'll go get you some." He said, before turning to walk out the room.
Damon cocked his head to the side before speaking. "You sure you're up for this?"
"For what?" I asked, confused.
"Everything that's about to happen, to change, now that you're a vampire?"
"What choice do I have Damon? I know my life is going to be different now. I can't undo any of it."
"I'm not going to lie to you, it's going to be tough." He stated before walking over to where I was sitting on the edge of the bed.
"I know." I nodded solemnly.
"There's one more thing…" He paused, before continuing. "Everything that you were ever compelled to forget will now come back to you."
"Really?" I asked, not knowing this would be a side effect.
"Yes…just try to keep an open mind about everything." He said.
I nodded, unsure of what he meant by it. Before I could say anything else, Stefan returned with my blood bags.
"Here you go, drink up." He said as he handed them to me.
I gladly took them and began to drink. The warm liquid felt amazing as usual, and I drank in silence as the two brothers stood before me.
"So I guess she's gunna crash here for a little while?" Damon said. It was more of a statement then a question.
"Guess so. I'll have Jeremy bring you some clothes." Stefan responded, glancing at me.
Before I could say anything, the sound of the doorbell rang in our ears.
"Who the hell is that?" Damon muttered, looking towards the door.
"I'll get it." Stefan said before walking out the room.
Caroline was in the room within seconds. "Elena!"
"Hey Carol—"
"What happened?! Bonnie barely gave me the details! How's Matt? Oh my god, how are you? You're…"
"…A vampire, I know." I finished for her.
"Yea.." She trailed off, and then glanced around, suddenly realizing Damon and Stefan's presence.
"Could you two give us a minute?" She asked. "I need to talk to Elena."
"Like hell—" Damon began before I cut him off.
"Damon." I glanced at him. He sighed heavily.
"Make it quick Blondie." He said before walking out of the room, with Stefan trailing behind him.
"How are you?" Caroline waited until they were out of the room to sit down on the bed, touching my shoulders as she spoke softly.
"I'm okay. This is just going to take some getting used to, you know?"
"I know. I understand, trust me. It's not as bad as you might think. Plus, you will have my help of course." She smiled softly before patting my shoulder.
"Okay," I smiled.
"How are you doing, you know, with the whole Tyler thing?" I asked hesitantly, half afraid of her reaction.
Instantly the smile on her face vanished and was replaced with a small frown. "You mean finding out that my best friend basically temporarily killed my boyfriend? Oh, I'm doing great." She huffed.
"Yea, I know. But she's going to fix it." I offered sheepishly.
"She better. I can't believe all of this is happening."
The next thirty minutes were filled with us catching up on everything that I had missed, like how Matt was doing and the latest rumors in school. It felt nice to be a normal teenager and focus on normal things for once, and escape the realities of my life.
Caroline only left after promising to be back the next day for Bonnie's ritual. After taking a nice shower and drinking a few more blood bags, I drifted off to sleep. And then it happened.
My dreams felt more like a reality. It was then I realized I was reliving a time where I was compelled, as Damon had warned me.
My eyes flew open. I was going to kill Damon the moment I laid eyes on him. He had done some pretty messed up things in the past, but this had outdone them all. He had compelled me the very first time he'd ever met me. He had met me before Stefan. The memory was fully intact now, the way it should have properly been in my human life—the memory that I was compelled to forget. The one memory that now changed everything.
