No. He just didn't want to remember.
"Well. Bought you something, anyway."
He deliberately hadn't reminded her so she wouldn't buy him something. Birthdays reeked too much of Benjamin Barker. Of happiness.
She pressed her gift into his hands. He remained at the window, not looking at her. She sighed as though expecting more (though he didn't know why she would expect more). Then she stepped forward, brushed her lips against his cheek, and left.
He threw out the present without opening it, but could not as easily throw away the kiss.
