Wow it's been too long! I hope there are people still out there reading this lol. So I'm trying to finish this up soon so maybe a few chapters left. Thank you to all who reviewed last time and for giving me advice on the storyline! I hope you enjoy! (Quick Summary: Emma and Yagari are now at his place since the last chapter after they discussed it at the end of cha[per nine
"You've got one more minute before I'm coming in there to help you," Emma sighed, her ginger bangs sliding out of her eyes as she leaned her head back against the hunter's currently closed bedroom door. She had been waiting the better part of fifteen minutes in the hallway, now sitting on the floor with her back against the door. Reluctantly, and now against her better judgment, the nurse had agreed to let the famous vampire hunter Toga Yagari dress himself, on his own, for the first time since the attempt on his life.
For a week Emma had been subject to the hunter's grumblings about her "dressing him like some incompetent child" or his grousing about being "damn ready to wear real pants again". By now he knew not to cross her by trying to do so behind her back, since he had learned the hard way after pushing the red head too far after a certain recent incident.
Emma was very adamant about him not indulging in alcohol and he had half listened to her lecture about how he was still healing and something about how it affected cell growth or something like that. The nurse allowed the half empty twelve pack to stay in the refrigerator and unknown to the hunter she kept count daily. While it was true Yagari never asked for a cigarette and the thought of them now prompted his lungs to start wheezing on the spot, the nicotine had left his veins yearning for something now that he wasn't in critical condition. After gnawing on the side of his thumb and throwing a final glance at the woman he thought to be asleep, Yagari made the dire mistake of hobbling slowly into his kitchen at almost midnight, only to have the light snapped on when he was in mid gulp leaning against the refrigerator door. After letting a string of expletives fly after dumping half of the can's contents on himself, his single blue eye lifted hesitantly to see Emma standing across the room with her arms crossed. To his surprise, her enraged expression morphed into a fear inducing smile as she nodded her head and then left him alone. After staring after her for a few moments, the hunter wished that she would have just yelled at him. She even kissed him sweetly and wrapped her arms around his waist after he had slunk back into bed.
His punishment came the next morning when he was in the middle of eating breakfast and she was rationing out his daily medication.
"Crap, we're out of your steroid pills," he heard the nurse huff as he looked up mid bite of a piece of toast to see her rummaging through the bag of pill bottles.
"I'm sure I'll be fine," Yagari muttered casually after swallowing, Emma padding up in her grey pajama pants and navy v neck with his pills in hand.
"No, you need them to keep that inflammation down in your lungs," she said as she slid into the chair next to him and handed him the little pile. Just as he was swallowing the mass of medications the nurse snapped her fingers, her face lighting up. "That's right, I have plenty of the injection left, thank God," Emma sighed in relief, with which Yagari almost gagged. "Stay here, I'll be right back," she called over shoulder as she swiftly stood and jogged out of the little dining area, the hunter left sitting there forming the conclusion that Emma did in fact have the pills he needed and that this was indeed his punishment.
"Geeze what's with that face," Emma smiled deviously as she re-entered, a syringe in her hand. "Well don't stare at me like a dummy Toga, you know how this works," she giggled while motioning for him to stand, the hunter feeling his stomach plummet as he slowly pushed himself up by bracing against the table.
"Emma, listen…" the deep voice began, but the young nurse waved him off.
"No talk, turn around," she grinned while spinning her finger.
"Dammit Richardson I get it ok," Yagari huffed while remaining riveted facing her, a light dusting of crimson creeping up on his cheeks.
"Toga I don't know what you're talking about or why you are being such a baby, but suck it up and turn around and put your hands on the table," she said before pulling the cap off with her teeth. By then the crimson had taken over the hunter's defined face as he threw her a very displeased and severely pissed off look before turning and leaning his hands against the wooden table. "Thank you," the nurse chirped before stepping behind him while trying exceptionally hard not to snort at the smoldering glare the hunter was throwing at the table, surprised that a flame had not in fact started under his stare. "I'll even count for you," the red head smirked through the plastic cap still held between her teeth, Yagari sighing irritably in response.
"One".
Yagari had forgotten one thing about getting steroids via injection. They sting. Badly.
After dropping an F bomb and nearly cracking the little dinner table the hunter quickly turned on the smirking nurse while rubbing his abused backside. "Son of a bitch Emma, what the hell happened to 'on three'?!" Yagari growled at the woman before him.
The nurse dropped her smirk before pointing the needle threateningly at the hunter. "You may not give a damn about heeding authority Toga Yagari but you will listen to me when it comes to your health and you getting better do you understand?" Emma said sternly while letting her arm lower. "I'm really not trying to be a royal nag but you've come too far to do something stupid to mess your progress up, got it?" the nurse finished, Yagari staring shocked for a moment before nodding guiltily. "Good," Emma smiled before stepping closer and leaning up to kiss him quickly before reaching around and squeezing his bottom playfully, with which a hiss escaped his chest as he bit his lip.
"You just stabbed that one remember," he uttered stiffly as Emma bit her knuckle regretfully.
"Oh crap, sorry," the nurse pushed her bangs back forcefully in guilt, the hunter slowly sinking back into the seat very cautiously. Yagari couldn't help but chuckle at Emma's mortified look after she had been so commanding, his hand coming to grasp hers and pull her back in her seat as well.
A quiet giggle escaped Emma's lips as she shook her head at that memory. Still smirking, the nurse glanced at her watch again before sighing. "I'm starting to think this was a bad idea," she called while beginning to bump the back of her head against the door rhythmically in hopes of annoying the hunter out…or getting him to finally admit he needed help.
Of course as she was going to lean back once more the door was opened and instead of meeting the solid wood with her back the nurse toppled backward with a squeak before her breath was knocked out of her. With her cheeks burning and her head now aching, Emma's eyes fluttered up to see the one eyed hunter smirking down at her as he leaned against the door frame. The nurse was quick to notice how the dark jeans, grey long sleeved crew neck sweater, and the rich, dark brown leather boots complete with him donning his eye patch left her blushing and staring dumbly while still lying on the floor.
"My God you can be annoying," Yagari smirked while offering her his hand, the other bracing himself against the frame.
The red head took it with a huff, quickly getting herself up in a rush. "Gee thanks for your concern," she muttered while trying to get her flaming cheeks under control, the hunter noticing her avoidance of eye contact.
"You know Emma, you've got it backward," the hunter chuckled lightly as Emma glared in embarrassment. "You don't get all flustered when I'm practically naked, which was my state for quite a while there, but now that I'm actually fully clothed you can't seem to look at me," he continued while adjusting the crutches beneath him. "You're a strange woman Richardson," Yagari grinned while shaking his head. Emma bristled for moment before dropping her irritated scowl and rubbing the back of her head.
"You…you look so different," she said quietly, her hands twisting around each other. "You look really nice Toga," Emma smiled sheepishly.
The hunter grinned softly before sighing. "Well good, because I'm probably wearing this for a few days since it took too much damn work to get into them in the first place," Yagari said while stepping out, the nurse rolling her eyes. "That is unless you want to undress me of course," Yagari commented while making his way down the little hallway, Emma feeling her stomach flutter as he passed before grinning to herself. Shaking her head, she began to follow the hobbling hunter down the hall. Later that morning Emma was in the middle of getting dressed herself when her phone buzzed on the rumpled sheets of the hunter's bed. For a moment the woman was apprehensive about answering, but after realizing who the number belonged to, she wasted no time swiping it up.
"Hello?" she answered breathlessly.
"Emma, this is Kaien," the gentle, yet tired voice on the other lined answered.
The nurse breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank God, are you alright? And Zero? Are you all safe?" she asked worriedly, twisting the end of her shirt in her free hand nervously.
"We are fine Emma. Tired, but fine. Turns out a group from both the Association and the Senate got together on this. We've taken care of it though and it's safe now. We should be coming home in the next day or so," the headmaster's words eased her nerves. Now it was Kaien's turn to sound on edge. "How is…" she heard him begin to ask somberly, but in her excitement she jumped in quickly.
"He's doing great Kaien," Emma smiled warmly, the ex hunter's relieved sigh audible on the other line. "He's got a long way to go but he's come through the worst of it," the nurse continued when it sounded like the man on the other line was trying hold back tears.
"Thank God," she heard him sniff. "I can't…I can't ever repay you," his warm voice cracked.
"No need, I've already been paid back more than I deserve," Emma grinned.
Cross was silent for a few moments before he spoke again. "You love him don't you?" the red head's face lit up when he asked her so calmly…as if he already knew.
"I…what?" Emma stammered while sinking down onto the bed, her heart fluttering in her chest.
"And he's hopelessly fallen for you too hasn't he?" Cross chuckled as Emma couldn't help but grin stupidly and run her fingers through her bangs over and over while finding she couldn't form words at the moment.
"Um…"
"Oh this is wonderful!" the haggard sounding man quickly came alive as he nearly busted the nurse's eardrum. "Toga in love is just the most adorable thing…" the man gushed as Emma shook her head.
"Kaien…do you want to talk to him?" she broke into his excitement just as she heard the door creak open, Yagari slowly limping in while watching her curiously. With a smile she held the phone out to the raven haired hunter, who hesitated before she nodded him on with an even bigger grin.
"Hello?" Yagari's deep and still a bit scratchy voice quietly said. Emma felt her heart swell when the voice on the other line responded and the hunter's blue eye grew wide, a grin soon following as he leaned on the crutches. "Where you been old man?" the hunter said warmly as Emma got up to give them privacy.
"Yeah no, I don't think so," Emma scoffed while swiping a pair of keys from the hunter's hand as they both stood in front of the driver's side of the black Silverado.
"I thought you said we were going out to celebrate," the hunter scowled as Emma crossed her arms in her thick, white Columbia coat, the icy wind quiet for the time being as a few flakes of snow began to fall.
"Yes but that doesn't mean I'm letting you drive," she sighed. "One day at a time please Toga," she watched him roll his eye.
"That's funny, as far as I know I'm the one who makes the car payments on this thing so explain to me why I can't drive it?" he narrowed his eye at her as he shoved his hand into his leather coat pocket and leaned against a crutch.
"Simple. Because I said so," Emma shrugged. "And you know what, we can take my car…"
"Now way in hell I'm riding in that girl wagon again," Yagari snorted.
"Then I guess we have a problem now don't we," Emma grinned while leaning back against the shiny black truck, their breath coming out in little puffs in the frigid air. "You better make a decision quick, you don't need to be breathing this cold air for too long," she said while glancing at her watch.
A few moments passed before she heard him huff and take up the crutches. "Fine," he said flatly before making his way around the front of the truck, the gravel crunching beneath him. Emma watched as he placed the crutches in the back seat then proceeded to pull himself along to the passenger side. She saw his cheeks blush slightly as he stared at the open seat.
"Do you need some help?" she asked quietly, trying not to sound condescending.
He glanced at her quickly before she saw that familiar determination in his eye light up again. Before she could get to him he had grabbed the handle on the inside and hoisted himself up in one quick motion before shutting the door, the nurse left smiling before going around and climbing in herself. His face was still lightly tinted crimson as she settled and glanced at him leaning against the door trying to appear bored.
"Have you even driven a truck before?" he sighed as Emma pulled her seatbelt on.
"Yes I have thank you…and it was a stick shift…with a trailer…on the highway," the woman sniggered, Yagari actually looking genuinely surprised. "My dad was a farmer at heart when he wasn't stuck in the office. He had a small herd of cattle that were really just his pets but he wouldn't ever admit it," she laughed quietly.
"Ok, if you drove a stick without getting yourself killed I don't have to worry about you," the hunter smirked as he straightened in his seat.
Emma shook her head while inserting the key into the ignition before she caught sight of a pair of sunglasses hanging on the visor above her.
"What are you doing now Richardson?" the Yagari sighed as the nurse pulled them on with a smirk before reaching down and pulling a cigarette from the half empty box nestled in the cup holder. The hunter stared at her with a cocked eyebrow as she pushed the unlit stick between her lips and slouched down into the seat.
"I gotta get the whole Toga Yagari truck driving experience," she giggled with the white stick poking out from her smile. The hunter felt something warm buzzing in the pit of his stomach at the way Emma's cheeks pushed her smooth, pale skin up into little creases around the bottom of the glasses from the force of her contagious smile. Without conscious effort, he saw his hand reach over and gently take the cigarette from her pink lips, which still hung partially open when he tenderly slipped the glasses from her eyes. The broken hunter didn't think he could fall so hard for another woman or even more so, but as his roughened fingers trailed down the blushing cheek, something he couldn't name pushed at his chest as if the force wanted out, a warm current stemming from each beat his heart took. This wasn't just happiness. This was the feeling of the warm, cradling sun against skin after a freezing rain under dark clouds. The hand that pulls you from the battering waves. That breath of air after the lungs were choked with water.
These were the thoughts moving through the hunter's mind as he kissed Emma slowly, their hands intertwining in hair then moving to softly glide across skin. And it was in that moment, with the sun glinting against the nurse's scarlet locks as she looked at him behind his own sunglasses with that smile…with that laugh…that the hunter knew he couldn't live without her. That smile and that laugh had sealed themselves in the very fiber of his being, and to have them removed would wound him deeper than any flame could hope to.
Emma finally allowed the hunter under her care to finally get that steak he had been nagging her about for quite some time and after watching him stare longingly at the menu of various alcoholic beverages, she granted him a single beer.
"It was about time you allowed me to eat decent food for once," Yagari sniggered as the two of them slowly made their way down the slightly busy street, a thin layer of snow crunching beneath them as the sun was beginning to sink down. Emma really didn't like for him to be out for so long in the cold air, but she just couldn't bring herself to keep the raven haired man inside after being shut in for so long.
"No, you're just picky and don't like anything I cook for you," she lightly shoved against his shoulder, careful not to unbalance him as he slowly made his way down the cobblestone walkway.
"Yeah well, give it a few weeks and I'll have to show you how to grill a real steak," the hunter smirked.
"I'll hold you to that," Emma smiled while brushing her bangs from her eyes. Just in that moment the nurse saw Yagari come to an abrupt halt, his eye staring ahead hard before the sound of a woman's cry of fear tore through the street.
The next moments were a blur for Emma. She vaguely remembered his demand for her to stay where she was before she was shocked to see him drop the crutches and take off at a surprisingly fast and strong pace in the direction of the scream. Emma stood there in frozen shock for a few agonizingly long moments, her mind in awe of how little the hunter's damaged leg hindered him as he disappeared from her sight. Then her brain finally woke up and in the next moment she was tearing after him. After pushing through the gathering crowd of people, Emma stepped through just in time to see Yagari tearing a man, or what appeared to be a man before she saw the blazing red eyes, off a young woman. Time seemed to accelerate and come to a screeching halt as she watched the writhing ex human scream in rage before whipping around to throw its full weight onto the hunter, sending them both down to the hard pavement. Emma felt her body lurch forward, a strangled cry catching in her throat as she felt a hand grab her arm. The nurse didn't even look to see who held her, her terrified eyes watching the level E and the hunter she loved struggling to pin the other onto the cold ground. The nurse's body felt frigid and buzzing as her heart pounded in her throat. With a shriek the creature succeeded in roughly shoving the hunter onto his back and Emma was just about to lose it when she noticed that though she could hear Yagari's breath knocked out of his lungs, his single eye stared hard and cold at the growling creature as its claws dug against his shoulders as it held him down. And that's when she saw the hunter's right hand quickly reach down and in the next second his hand was at the vampire's head before a loud noise deafened her ears. The earth stood still as the attacking creature suddenly vanished into a pile of ash, the newly gathered crowd staring at the man panting heavily on his back in the middle of the street…the familiar pistol slipping from his hand as it came to clutch at his right side.
Emma broke the frozen silence as she jerked herself free from whoever it was that had held her back, running to the hunter's side and dropping to her knees.
"Toga, what's wrong…let me," the nurse said breathlessly as she felt the hunter's warm blood under her hands as he curled onto his side. The color was already gone from his face and his wheezing breath was coming out in painful grunts, but he was quick to cut her off as he kept his eye tightly shut.
"Go see to her," he heaved while trying to keep his breath steady.
"Toga you're hurt…".
"See to her!" Yagari ordered as his hand clutched at his chest harder with the force of his words. Emma stared at him torn until he finally opened his eye, the hardness gone, but he was pleading with her. Against her will, she shrugged out of her coat and draped it over the pale and shivering hunter, the white fabric quickly smearing with red as she shakily rose, her eyes glaring hard at the onlookers who continued to stand motionless. When she saw a few men step forward she turned with tears burning at her eyes to go see about the young woman. By now the softly sobbing woman was in the arms of who Emma guessed was her husband, the man holding a handkerchief to her collarbone.
"Here, let me see," Emma forced a compassionate smile on her face, the terrified woman fighting to compose herself as her husband moved his hand. There was an angry laceration to her skin, but Emma saw that nothing serious was done as her eyes continued to scan her body for any more injuries…when they fell on her slightly swollen belly.
"Is my baby going to be ok?" the soft voiced mother hiccupped between breaths, Emma's stomach fluttering at how close an unborn life had come to death.
"I'm sure your baby will be fine," Emma smiled while placing her hand on her shoulder. "But you should get to a hospital to get that wound seen about and make sure the baby isn't stressed," Emma patted her shoulder softly before rising, it taking everything in her not to sprint back to Yagari's side.
"I called for help," the nurse heard a woman call from the crowd and in turn she nodded gratefully in reply. After nodding to the young couple, she quickly turned and made her way back to the hunter, who had a small gathering around him by then. The three men that knelt beside the panting hunter had also given up their coats to shield him from the biting cold as she came to kneel beside him again.
"Toga, talk to me," the nurse said softly while brushing his wild locks from his eye, her hands gently coming to rest on his shivering arms.
"Is she…alright?" he managed to get out while looking tiredly at the nurse.
"She…and the baby are fine, now help me roll you onto your back without hurting you so I can see," she smoothly talked to him as she began to slowly move him onto his back, her chest tightening at his wincing and hissing as his body was moved. She wanted more than anything to get him out of the cold, but she was terrified to move him too much until she knew how severely he was injured.
"It must have…gotten me…in the side," he panted as she silently worked to move the coats off of his chest while still keeping him as covered as possible. His breathing sounded horrible as she gently worked the grey sweater up, his body trembling at the cold air hitting his skin. Emma heard a few breaths catch from the onlookers as the healing burns came into view.
"I'm sorry, I'm trying to be quick," she hurriedly said while scanning him for the source of such pain. There were definite gashes from the creature's claws along his shoulders and neck, but there was nothing on the right side of his chest besides the new scars. No ribs appeared broken and there was minimal bruising. "I don't…see anything…" she began to say when it clicked. His already injured and weak lungs had just gone through a tremendous amount of stress and it was very possible one of them collapsed. Immediately the nurse threw the coats back over him before grabbing the keys from her bag.
"Black Silverado, back parking lot, bring it here," she instructed one of the men standing by, who wasted no time doing as he was told, the nurse turning back to Yagari, who seemed another shade paler as he tried not to curl back onto his side. "You aren't stabbed Toga, your lung more than likely collapsed and I'm taking you to a hospital as soon as that guy comes back with the truck," Emma sighed a shaky breath, Yagari not appearing to be too concerned despite the god awful amount of pain he was in and the fact that breathing was quite the chore.
"You let a stranger…drive my truck?" the hunter panted before wincing, a weak grin spreading on his lips at Emma's eyes nearly bugging out of her head at his comment. "But thanks for not making me ride in a damn ambulance," he sighed. "Better yet, can't you just play doctor again like last time and we can skip the whole hospital business," he grunted while, to her astonishment, trying to sit up.
"I can't fix this one on my own unfortunately," the nurse smiled softly while helping him to slowly sit up and pull the coats around him, the hunter closing his eye and cursing quietly in despair.
It didn't take the helpful bystander long to reach the crowd and the same three men helped the nurse to get the grumpy and painful hunter into the truck. The hunter lay back against the seat exhausted for a long time as Emma drove the familiar route to a very familiar hospital before speaking again.
"How do you fix this?" he wheezed flatly, his hand coming to clutch at his chest again.
"You really don't want to know right now," the nurse sighed, her fingers reaching over and taking his wrist in her own as she checked his pulse.
"This is sounding really not fun," Yagari groaned quietly before growing still again.
During the drive Emma called Cross to let him know what was going on, and of course he sounded worried sick again. The ex hunter told the nurse that he and Zero were on the way and would be there in a few hours while also adding he would get Yori's parents to drop off Yuki when he was returning home. After assuring him that Yagari was going to be fine and letting him speak with the said, miserable hunter, Emma finally reached the brightly lit parking lot.
Emma stumbled through the sliding doors with Yagari fighting to stay upright while leaning against her, a pair of nurses wasting no time in helping to get him on a bed in the back. The red head was thankful no one knew her in this department, so all of her attention was on the unsettled hunter who did not like all of the fussing over him even if he felt like he was going to pass out at any moment. He was thankful when she began to explain what was going on while effectively steeping between him and the other bustling nurses, her gentle hands working to pull off his blood stained sweater. "And to top it off he's just come through a rather serious accident that has left his lungs weak," Emma sighed when she saw the nurses catch sight of the scars twisting down his torso. Of course after that comment the middle aged nurse in the Tweety Bird print scrub top had that rather irritating tube around his face in no time, but he had to admit the extra oxygen made the task of breathing a world easier, but the hunter wasn't thrilled when they began to attach more things to his body and stick needles in his arm, but the disgruntled man kept his cursing to a minimum as Emma glared at him with a "behave or I'll hurt you worse" kind of look. After dressing the new gashes and taking a chest X ray the two were finally left alone for a few moments.
All of the adrenaline had run out of Emma as she carefully sat beside a grumpy Yagari and took his hand, the hunter dropping his scowl when he heard her sniff as she cradled his still calloused hand against her cheek. "I thought I lost you for moment back there…but I got to see the top ranked vampire hunter saving the life of a mother and child…and all with a broken body that you didn't let stop you…but you also scared the hell out of me," Emma laughed softly before wiping at her eyes, Yagari grinning weakly.
"It wouldn't be a job complete without that," he smirked before the Tweety Bird nurse and a doctor came through the curtains. The hunter's expression quickly soured as the young doctor talked about trying to draw off the air compressing the lung using only a large syringe. Emma felt sorry for the exhausted hunter as he squeezed her hand as they injected numbing medication in an area between the ribs and then began the procedure. Though it still hurt like hell, the hunter could feel the horrible pressure easing in his chest. Finally they covered the area with gauze and sat him up long enough to get him in one of those lovely hospital gowns…of which Emma was utterly shocked they didn't have to sedate him to do so, but she could see how utterly exhausted he was as they told him he was staying overnight to see if the lung held.
"Be happy that was all it took," Emma smiled when they were finally in a room, her hands carefully adding another pillow behind the tired hunter.
"What was next?" his sleepy voice croaked as he fought to hold his eye open now that he was finally warm after Emma had brought out every extra blanket there was in the closet.
"A plastic tube run through your ribs," she sighed while falling into a chair, equally exhausted.
"Holy shit," he grumbled before falling quiet again. Both of them dozed off in the dim room that was quiet for the moment until Emma's eyes cracked open to the sound of soft knocking at the door. She sleepily opened the heavy wooden door to see an equally tired looking Kaien and Zero, the ex hunter quickly embracing her in a warm hug before she led them in. The nurse noticed Zero looked on edge, but when she gently stirred the drowsy Yagari and his blue eye cracked open to see his friend and student before him, the sideways grin that spread across his lips immediately put the boy at ease.
"Shit Kaien don't go crying all over me, I'm not dead," Yagari chuckled weakly as his friend embraced him as best he could, the headmaster's sniffles audible. Emma stifled a giggle when it didn't look like Cross was going to let go anytime soon, Yagari rolling his eye before looking to his student who was standing quietly looking at the floor.
The hunter reached out and gently caught the boy's arm, Zero slowly bringing his lilac eyes from the floor. "You ok?" Yagari asked quietly, Emma immediately seeing the father and son bond they had even with so few words. Zero nodded quickly in response. "Really, are you ok?" the hunter asked again even more quietly as Kaien got up from his friend's side.
"I made them pay…for what they did to you and that little girl," the teen said heavily, his fists clenching tightly until he felt his teacher's rough fingers sliding down to grasp one of them. Emma saw the worry in Yagari's eye as Kaien put his hand on the teen's shoulder with a heavy look.
"It's ok Zero. I'm proud to call you my student. You'll make a fine president when the Association pulls itself together again," the hunter squeezed the boy's hand with a grin, the boy's eyes coming to life with surprise…before the smallest of smiles was brought out on his pale face.
"Thank you…Master," Zero's quiet voice said as Emma couldn't help the warm grin that spread across her own lips.
That is before Kaien clapped his hands together with a goofy smile on his face and said, "So Toga, I hear you got a girlfriend!" Emma felt her cheeks heat up to new levels, Zero looking over at her and smirking slightly as Yagari sighed and ran his hand down his face in a feeble attempt to hide his own reddening cheeks.
