Hello readers. I have been getting some mixes reviews about whether to pair Alison with Seth or Alec. If I decide to pair her with Seth I have a whole 'help Alison out of her shell' thing but if I pair her with Alec, I don't really have a good story for that. So if you want to put your suggestions out there then it just might spark an idea. Thanks in advance.
Its half one here...so Ill re read this chapter again and hope that the extra long chapter makes up for the wait.
UPDATE; Okay I have re-read this chapter and I hope that my rushed typing hasn't done more harm than good. I also have been diagnosed with 'ganglion' on my wrist, now for those of you that don't know or want to Google it, it's a collection of fluid that is pushing the bones on my wrist apart. So typing hurts like a bitch. Sorry if updates are a little slow.
I have also gone back and re done chapters 3 and 4 if you want to read them to se the changes.
Chapter 10
Alison had spent the next several days in her room. She practically barricaded herself in there, she lay on her bed in the fetal position trying to make sense of everything. The only time she left was when Esme, Rosalie or Bella forced her out to eat something. The rain could be herd 'plinking' on the window and Alison felt some connection to the land she came from and its near constant rain.
She had no idea what to do, she was scared that she could read minds, it wasn't natural...well nether were vampires but Alison had never written off the supernatural from reality.
It was strange after spending so much time in her room Alison could accurately follow and predict everyone's routine. Carlisle's was the easiest.
He came home from work at the Hospital, said 'hello' to everyone who was around, gave Esme a greeting kiss, and went into his study. After a few hours Esme would go into the room and they would talk about his day, the patents, the staff or the patents relatives. He and Esme would leave and spend quality time with everyone. It seemed to be the only time everyone was together. Finally he and Esme would talk until it was time for him to go back to work.
Edward and Bella would start the day coming back form there house. Sometimes Nessie and Jacob would be with them. They mostly spent there time together talking, at mid day they would both leave and go into the forest. What they would do is only left to the imagination. They came home for quality time with the family, and left to go back to there home.
Jasper and Alice spent most of there time out either shopping or spending tome together. Honestly Alison didn't know how a person could spend so much time with a shopaholic as bad as Alice. Is she ever tried to use Alison as a 'dress up Barbie' then she would run as far as she could. Jasper must have the patient of a saint.
Rosalie and Emmet...Had a LOT of 'Personal Time'. Alison never read there minds anywhere from three till seven in the morning. (Shiver)
Some good did come from her induced isolation; she had spent time 'feeling' her shield, like Bella suggested, looking for how it felt, how it looked what colour it was, everything. She could now lower and raise her shield at will, and Alison had to admit that it was interesting and a little fun, to hear people minds, but the most interesting thing was that she could have full conversations with Edward.
It was very weird to listen to another mind reader; it was like an echo, she could hear both her voice, his voice, and the voices of everyone else voice at the same time in her head.
Edward was activity trying to convince Alison to leave her room, saying things like 'Esme's worried about you.' Or 'Isolating your self is not healthy.' Every time he did Alison just shut off the connection. He was trying to play on her emotions and get her to leave her room.
But that was almost exactly the opposite of what she wanted. Alison was much more comfortable with people that she knew and were familiar with, and while the Cullen's were becoming slightly more familiar to her and she was a little more comfortable around them, they just weren't a replacement for Blaine and Ethan.
Blaine and Ethan...God how she missed the lads. She wasn't sure if they also missed her but she hoped that they did. Alison didn't want to call or text them because, after all that she was told about the Volturi she did NOT want to put them in danger or get them involved in any way. It was just too dangerous.
Outside the rain was linking against the windows, the wind could be heard howling aggressively blowing against the walls of the house and over the rain. It sounded like a thunderstorm was on its way. Alison was able (with a lot of imagination) to pretend that she was back at Blaine and Ethan's. She could almost hear Ethan's light snoring.
A light tapping on the door broke Alison from her remising. Jasper opened the door and poked his head in. The window had turned into a perpetual mirror because of the inky blackness outside; she could make out Jasper perfectly. Even so, Alison turned her head to see him.
"Don't you go messing with my emotions again." Alison warned him in a semi monotone.
He held his hands up in the 'im unarmed' gesture "Don't worry about that darlin'. Im just here to talk this time." He sat on the edge of Alison's bed, her back facing him. "I know you are scared and confused-" He started, hopeing to get Alison to react "-but you have to remember that there are people that do care around here. You just have to let them in."
Alison sighed and turned to Jasper "Don't be a twat, I can't let them in Jasper, you know I can't. It's too difficult. It is just against my nature, I wasn't brought up in a 'loving' home. I was constantly taking the blame for things that I had no part in and there was always anger in the house. I just shut down my emotions and locked them away."
It wasn't like Alison to talk like this, she hated opening up to people that weren't either Blaine or Ethan. So Alison came to the conclusion that Jasper really was manipulating her emotions. When she asked him he put his fingers a tiny bit apart and said "Just a little."
"So since we are on the 'sharing histories' subject. Why don't you tell me yours?" Alison asked and sat up focusing on Jasper
Jasper crossed his arms and practically became a statue, there was no sound but the rain on the glass, he was trying to think of a way out of this conversation. Alison saw this and added "I'll just read your mind" getting him back for messing with her emotions.
He sighed "Why do I have a feeling that you'll be more annoying than Edward. Fine, but you have to promise to leave this room for a whole week." After little thought Alison agreed.
Jasper took off his jumper and to Alison's horror reveled a few hundred crescent shaped white scare's "I didn't have the nicest upbringing either. I was young and naïve, just seventeen, and like my friends, I wanted to join the Confederate Army, I was tall enough to have them believe that I was twenty.
"My military career was shpt lived but very promising. People always... liked me. They listened to what I told them. My Father said it was charisma. But I now know it must have been something more. Whatever the reason was, I quickly rise through the ranks of promotion. By the first battle of Galverston- not much of a battle really- I was the youngest major in Texas, not even acknowledging my real age.
"I was charged with the evacuation of woman and children from the city when the Union's mortar boats reached the harbor. It took a day to prepare them, and then I left with the first column of civilians to convey them to Huston...I remember that day very clearly.
"We reached the city after dark. I stayed only long enough to make sure the entire party was safely situated. As soon as that was done I grabbed a fresh horse and headed back to Galveston. There wasn't time to rest.
"Just a mile outside the city I found three women on foot. I assumed they were stragglers and dismounted at once to assist them. But, when I could see their faces in the din light of the moon I was stunned into silence. They were, without question, the three most beautiful creatures I had ever laid eyes on.
"They has such pale skin, I remember marveling at it. Even the little black-haired girl, who's featured were clearly Mexican, was porcelain in the moonlight. They seemed young, all of them, still young enough to be called girls. I knew at once that they were not part of our party, I would have remembered seeing these three.
"'He's speechless" the tallest said in a lovely delicate voice- it was like wind chimes. She had fair hair and snow white skin.
"The other was blonder still, her skin just as chalky. Her face was like an angel's she leaned toward me and inhaled deeply. 'hmmm lovely' she said.
"The small one, a tiny brunette, put her hand on the other girls arm and spoke quickly. Her voice was to soft, musical and sharp, but that seemed to be the way she intended it.
"'Concentrate Nettie,' she said.
"I'd always had a good sense of how people related to each other, and it was immediately clear that the brunette was somehow in charge of the others. If they were a military then I would say she outranked them.
"They knew that I was something special and they wanted to 'keep me'
"'You'd better do it, Maria,' the taller blond spoke again 'If he's important to you. I kill them twice as often as I keep them'
"'Yes, I'll do it,' Maria agreed 'I really do like this one. Take Nettie away, will you? I don't want to have to protect my back while im trying to focus.'
"The hair was standing up on the back of my neck, though I didn't understand the meaning of anything the beautiful creatures were saying. My instincts were telling me there was danger, that the angel had meant it when they spoke of killing, but my judgment overruled my instincts. I had not been taught to fear women, but to protect them.
"The other two wheeled away – they were so graceful!- and sprinted toward the city. They were so fast, they seemed to almost take flight, there white dresses blew out behind them like wings.
"'What's your name soldier?' Maria asked me.
"'Major Jasper Whitlock ma'am' I stammered, unable to be impolite to a female, even if she was a ghost.
"'I truly hope you survive, Jasper,' she said in a gentile voice 'I have a good feeling about you.'
"She took a step closer and inclined her head as if she was going to kiss me. I stood frozen in place, though my instincts were screaming at me to run."
Jasper paused, his face thoughtful, clearly these memories were painful. They were so vivid that Alison didn't need to read his mind to get a picture of what was happening "A few days later, I was introduced to my new life.
"They were Maria, Nettie and Lucy. They hadn't been together long – Maris had rounded up the other two- all three were survivors of recently lost battles. Theirs was a partnership of connivance. Maria wanted revenge and her territories back. The others were eager to increases there...herd lands, I suppose you could say. They were putting together an army, and going about it more carefully than usual. It was Maria's idea. She wanted a superior army, so she sought out specific humans who had potential. Then she gave us much more attention, more training than anyone else had bothered with. She taught us to fight, and she taught us to be invisible to the humans. When we did well, we were rewarded... You can guess with what
"She was in a hurry in a hurry, though. Maria knew that the massive strength of the newborn began to wane around the year mark, and she wanted to act while we were strong.
"There were six of us when I joined Maria's band. She added four more within a fortnight. We were all male- Maria wanted soldiers- and that made it slightly more to keep from fighting amongst ourselves. I fought my first battles against my new comrades in arms. I was quicker than the others, better at combat. Maria was please with me, thought put out that she had to keep replacing the ones I destroyed. I was rewarded often, and that made me stronger.
"Maria was a good judge of character. She decided to put me in charge of the others-as if I were being promoted. It suited my nature exactly. The casualties went down dramatically, and out numbers swelled to hover around twenty.
"This was considerable for the cautious times we lived in. My ability, as yet undefined to control the emotional atmosphere around me was vitally effective. We soon began to work in ways that newborn vampires had never cooperated before. Even Maria, Nettie and Lucy were never able to work together more easily.
"Maria grew quite fond of me- and she began to depend on me. And, in some ways, I worshipped the ground she walked on. I had no idea that any other life was possible. Maria told us this was the way things were, and we believed her.
"She asked me to tell her when my brothers and I were ready to fight, and I was eager to prove myself. I pulled together twenty three in the end- twenty three unbelievably strong new vampires, organized and skilled as no other before. Maria was ecstatic.
We reclaimed Maria's old territory with extreme ease. The city changed hands without any human being aware. Success made Maria greedy. It wasn't long before she began to eye other cities. That first year, she extended her control to cover most of Texas and northern Mexico. Then the others came from the south to dislodge her." He brushed his fingers over the faint pattern of scars on his arm.
"The fighting was intense. Many began to worry that the Volturi would return. Of the original twenty three, I was the only one to survive the first eighteen months. We both won and lost. Nettie and Lucy turned on Maria eventually- but that one we won.
"Maria and I were able to hold onto Monterrey. It quieted, a little, though the wars continued. The idea of conquest was dying out; it was mostly vengeance and fending now. So many had lost there partners, and that is something our kind does not forgive...
"Maria and I always kept a dozen or so newborns ready. They meant little to us- they were pawns, disposable. When they outgrew there usefulness, we did dispose of them. My life continued in the same violent pattern and the years passed. I was sick of it all for a very long time before anything changed...
"Decades later, I developed a friendship with a newborn who'd remained useful and survived his first three years, against the odds. His name was Peter. I liked him, he was civilized- I suppose that's the right word. He didn't enjoy the fighting , though he was good at it.
"He was assigned to deal with the newborns – babysit them , you could say. It was a full-time job.
"And then it was time to purge them again. The newborns were outgrowing there strength, they were due to be replaced. Peter was supposed to help me dispose of them. We took them aside individually, you see, one by one... It was always a long night. This time, he tried to convince me that a few had potential, but Maria had instructed that we get rid of them all. I told him no.
"We were about half way through and I could feel that it was taking a grate toll on Peter. When I called on the next victim, to my surprise, he was suddenly furious. I braced for whatever his mood might foreshadow – he was a good fighter but I was better.
"The newborn was female, just past the year mark. Her name was Charlotte. His feelings changed when she came into view; they gave him away. He yelled for her to run and bolted after her. I could have followed them bit I chose not to. I felt...averse to destroying him.
"Maria was irritated at me for that..."
"Five years later, Peter snuck back for me. He picked a good day to arrive.
"Maria was mystified by my ever-deteriorating frame of mind. She'd never felt a moment's depression, and I wondered why I was different. I began to notice a change in her emotions when she was near me- sometimes there was fear... and malice- the same feeling s that had given advance warning when Nettie and Lucy struck. I was preparing to destroy my only ally, the core of my existence, when Peter returned.
Peter told me about his new life with Charlotte, told me about options I'd never dreamed I had. In five years they'd never had a fight, though they'd met others in the north. Others who could co-exist without the constant mayhem.
In one conversation he had me convinced. I was ready to go, and somewhat relived I wouldn't have to kill Maria, I'd been her companion for as many years as Carlisle and Edward, yet the bond was nowhere as strong. When you live and fight the way we did, the relationships you form are easily broken. I walked backward without a glance.
"I came into Philadelphia during a storm and I was out during the day, something I wasn't comfortable with yet. I knew standing in the rain would attract attention so I ducked into a half-empty diner. My eyes were dark enough that no one would notice them, thought this meant I was thirsty, and this worried me a little.
"She was there- expecting me, naturally." He chuckled once "Alice hopped down from the high stool at the counter as soon as I walked in and came directly toward me.
"It shocked me. I was not sure if she meant to attack. That was the only interpretation my past had to offer. But she was smiling. And the emotions that were emanating from her were like nothing I'd never felt before.
"Things got better after that and while ive had difficulty with the new diet, Ive never looked back. Id rather be struggling to stay on this path than feeling the emotions of those that I'd kill"
When he had finished Jasper eyes regained focus as he rejoined the present. He was an excellent story teller that was for sure. Alison felt chills; she was still in that war torn land of southern America, vampires fighting each other to the death over territories. Over lands to hunt and kill humans.
"So you aren't the only one with a sad history. But at least mine had gotten happier since I met Alice. Yours will too if you learn to let people in from time to time, we all want to help." He rose from the bed and walked toward the door "Now come on, you promised to get out of this room."
"Hmmm, its ingenious." Alison said crossing her arms.
Jasper stopped and turned "What is?"
"Condition a child with an idea or moral and it will follow them to adulthood. Taking advantage of a newborn vampire in there confused state is much the same. It was the only thing you knew. The only thing they let you know." Alison finished and looked up "Im sorry, you probably don't want to hear my ideas"
"Don't worry about it darlin. And nice try, but im not that easily distracted, you still promised to leave this room." Jasper say though her attempt.
Alison sighed she really didn't want to leave her 'save haven' as she dubbed it. But a promise was a promise. She rolled out of bed and threw her feet out from under her before she fell; she then stretched holding both hands as far as she could above her head and standing on the tips of her toes. Many of the bones in her arms, shoulders, spine and legs cracked from disuse, but it was a good pain. Alison grabbed a hair-tie from the nightstand and tied her hair back in its patented low ponytail, resting on the base of her neck.
Jasper then turned from the door "Here, I just remembered something" He pulled out a few books. The ones that Alison had bought the day her head felt like it wanted to explode and .
She had completely forgotten about them, which was very strange for her as she loved her books. They were a window into happier worlds.
Alison grabbed them and held them close to her chest, she felt strangely warm and happy (no doubt thanks to Jasper) and smiled a small smile, just a slight tug of her lips. She put the books on her shelf for reading later and walked with Jasper down the stairs. Jasper was ghost quiet walking down the carpeted steps with unimaginable grace, and for once Alison didn't draw comparisons her self to that grace.
She had caught herself comparing herself to Renesmee multiple times, it was a bad habit that she had. Back in her old home before she had met her friends Alison was always comparing herself to other people and pointing out her own flaws... or inventing them altogether, putting herself down all the time. It was a horrible habit that she had obtained living with her old family. After years of being told that one is worthless it starts to become real. That started her love of Games, Movies and Books; if Alison couldn't find happiness in this world then she would lose herself in another one entirely.
Finally Blaine and Ethan realized what she was doing and practically beat her until she stopped. She thought the back of her head was going to be permanently bruised before they stopped.
She was glad for Jaspers mood altering powers in that moment.
They reached the bottom of the stairs and entered into the living room. The rest of the family, minus Nessie and Jacob were already there sitting in two's around the room. Jasper gravitated to Alice and they shared a loving embrace, with Jasper picking up the pixy girl effortlessly and spinning her around in a circle.
Alison stood awkwardly there for a few moments before walking into the kitchen to make an omelet. Soon enough the room was filled with the scent of eggs, ham, mushrooms, herbs and spices. While she was cooking Carlisle came walking in holding that day's paper in his hand. Alison was too absorbed with her cooking to even notice him.
When the food was on her plate (garnished with some final herbs) Alison turned and was annoyed to see him sitting at the counter.
"How many times must I say it 'Stop Following Me' im not suicidal" Alison said while placing her plate on the counter opposite him and sitting on the chair.
Before she ate however, Alison thought of a question that was bugging her for a while. "Why are you still here? In Forks I mean." She noticed Carlisle's confused look and mistook it for annoyance and added before she could get into trouble "It just seems odd to stay in a place that's so far from your work and in an area that you are so well known"
Carlisle wasn't angry (it wasn't in his nature) but was a little taken aback as to the well thought out question itself was.
"Well, we are still here because Jacob wanted to be near his pack and we couldn't force him to chose between his imprint or his pack, it wouldn't have been right. The other was because we thought that bringing you back to this house would help the integration to this family." Carlisle explained "You have memories here and we hoped that they would be triggered and you would feel more comfortable here." He finished
Alison contemplated what he said. "But what about your work?" She had finished the omelet and went to the sink to clean everything she had used.
Carlisle laughed lightly "Don't worry about my work, I have ways and means of getting there. And I didn't start in this new hospital until a year or so ago and I used fake papers to get me in." The way he said it Alison thought he looked like Rufus Shrinra from Final Fantasy for a moment...Albeit a less evil Rufus.
So another chapter down. Please review. I crave them.
