J'onn was quiet and sullen the entire trip. His red eyes occasionally drifting from the back of Superman's head to Kay's face. She was resting peacefully at the moment, slumped over slightly in her seat, her eyes closed, her breathing shallow- due to the fact that she'd had a panic attack shortly after their shuttle had left the watchtower. Causing him to react, perhaps a tad bit more forcefully than he had meant too in order to pull her consciousness down into the depths of a dreamless sleep.
He'd hated invading her mind so suddenly and ruthlessly. But he had honestly felt that doing so was better than letting her suffer unnecessarily. Besides the trip would only last two in a half hours and a nap, no matter how short, would do her well considering how little rest she had gotten over the past few days. "How is she J'onn?" Superman asked, his voice cutting through the martian's thoughts like a knife. Causing the man hunter to grit his teeth just to keep from gnashing them and snarling at the Kryptonian.
This must have been the hundredth time in the past hour that he'd been asked how Kay was doing and frankly, he felt it wasn't anyone's business how she was at the moment. She. Was. Resting. And if he was asked one more question about how she was doing- he was going to strangle someone. Truly he was. But Superman didn't seem able to take his silence as a hint and turned around in his seat a little bit and glanced back at him and Kay.
"J'onn?" He said in a tentative tone this time earning a low feral sounding growl akin to the one he and the other two had heard from the martian man hunter in the mess hall before he had hauled the girl off.
"Be quiet. My head is pounding." J'onn lied hoping that the slight bite to his tone would get the man to back off. Superman gave him a puzzled look for a moment then sighed and turned back around and began to pay more attention to what he was doing. Which was good, J'onn supposed. Especially since he was confused by his behavior towards his friend.
Letting his gaze wander around the ship, his eyes once again came to rest on Kay's sleeping face. She looked so innocent and sweet when she was like this that it almost made him forget that there was possibly someone out there trying to find her so that they could...hurt, maim, or possibly even kill her.
I hope that you dream of something sweet- little one. He thought as he absently reached out and started to brush her silken hair back from her face when he heard Flash's unmistakable snicker followed by, "Aw someone's got a crush!" Forcing J'onn to drop his hand back to his lap as he turned his head to glare at his friend.
Honestly, how immature... Martian's didn't develop crushs. They were incapable of it. No- they tended to go for the deeper feelings instead of the shallow ones that most species (like humans) felt. They lived for passion and adoration and love- They worshiped the object of their affections and expected the same in return.
And yes- during his time on earth he had engaged in relationships with human women, and though they had all ended either badly or- well...very badly. J'onn just couldn't give up the hope that perhaps there was one human female in all the world that would suit him. Then maybe, just maybe he could remarry and start a new family. God knew that earth, for all it's faults, was more peaceful than his own world had been. So maybe it was possible.
His eyes wandered to Kay's sleeping face again and this time his lips curved up in a small smile.
Sitting here thinking like this...about future, family and love- He could easily see himself falling for the young woman in the seat next to him. He could easily imagine having a life with her. Waking up in bed everyday with her in his arms, kissing her awake, going to check on their first born child before starting his day.
He closed his eyes for a moment and let his mind drift a bit, daydreaming about what it would be like to come home to Kay as his wife, talking about their day over dinner, sitting with his son/daughter in the nursery and reading to them or perhaps singing them to sleep before deciding to do the same with his wife.
He could see her smile. Bright. Sunny. Radiant.
Though he had yet to see it he bet her smile was breathtaking.
