If I could leave, I would be leaving Don't make it so hard for me to stay
Cause I cannot believe what I am hearing
Tell me, how can it be
I'm second guessing on the one I, one I love
TRIS
After Caleb's dramatic escapade, I decided that he wasn't worth it. I guess, being in two different factions really just changes a person. Christina found me, telling me Cara was taken by Eric. Eric didn't do much to them except let them promise to never come back here. Promising with your fingers crossed just defeats the purpose of a promise but Eric didn't know that. Who knew Erudite could be so sneaky? I didn't cry though, when Caleb left. I'm just happy we could actually see each other again.
"What a day, huh?" Christina says, nudging me out of my trance.
"Yeah, sure" I guess.
"What's with you today?" she asks.
"Just tired. I mean, what a day, right?" I say, monotonously.
"Right." Christina answers a smile forming on her lips. We turn around a corner and I see someone I didn't see for a couple of months. I smile at him and he smiles back. Christina doesn't notice. She's blubbering about camping tonight. When I wave at him, I'm not surprise that Christina stops and turns around. She sees him alright, because her gaze was full of fury when she looks back at me.
"Peter, really Tris?" she asks. I roll my eyes.
"Give him a break" I say.
"Yeah, I'll give him a break. I mean he tried to kill you, twice. Do I have to ring the bell?" she says. I just smile at her as we round the corner. I didn't dare look back at Peter now that Christina is giving me her blow-by-blow argument why I shouldn't go soft on Peter.
"I'm not going soft on her, Christina" I say. "I'm just saying, we should give him a chance 'cause maybe he has changed" I say, shrugging.
She rolls her eyes, "Yeah, and we trust him and he tries to kill you again." I hook my arm around hers and drag her towards the cafeteria.
PETER
When I wake up, I felt pain surge through my body. Oh gosh, I forgot that I had a sprain. Apparently, sleep didn't make it any better. I have to go to the hospital. Ignoring the pain, well trying to, I stagger towards the hospital. There wasn't much people, to my good fortune. I didn't really want bumping into people knowing that my sprain was getting worse. I just hope my foot won't be amputated. Okay, that's a bit of an overstatement but being able to not walk for a couple of days frighten me.
I go up to the woman behind the counter and tell her what I was there for. A couple of minutes later, I am hauled to a room. I sit there waiting for the doctor.
The door opens, and I see a girl with short black hair. She needn't have to turn around for me to know her.
"You're my patient!" she says. I snicker. "You don't say, Chris" I say.
"Don't you dare call me Chris. We're not friends" she says. I suck in a breath and put my hand over my heart.
"That struck" I say.
"It better have" she takes an x-ray of my foot to see if there are any broken bones. She doesn't say anything else, and I didn't know if I'll be glad by the silence or not. She left me for a couple of minutes to get the results of my x-ray. I read in some history at school that X-ray results usually take an hour but with the technology we have, you just have to wait for at least 15-20 minutes. And yes, I do read. I lie down while I wait for Christina.
"You have a Trimalleolar fracture." Christina says when she goes back inside the room. I guess it wasn't a sprain after all. My bad.
"Is that bad?" I ask. I actually feel scared. I know a fracture isn't really a good term.
"Yours is not that bad. It's just needs to be put in a cast for a couple of weeks but if you're too stubborn, and won't listen to your doctor then we might as well put you in a surgery" she says. "That's harder and more painful than a cast" she adds. I'm almost going to pass out.
"Okay, fine. What do I have to do?" I ask.
"Do not put pressure on your foot. Do not mess with the cast. Always use your crutches, which we will be giving to you after we cast your foot. Visit us every other week so we could look at the progress and if you feel any pain, drink this. Only one at a time, please" she passes me a whole pack of pain relievers." After she explains some of more rules that I have to follow, which, I must say, I do intend to follow, I walk with her towards a room where they plan to cast my foot. Christina leaves after a while. I didn't mind though. I just wait for all this to finish so I could go back to my room and rest because, believe me, I'm still really tired.
It feels like one whole day has passed, but I was back to my original room after a couple of minutes and Christina was in front of me, fixing my papers. She passes me the papers and I almost had a heart attack looking at the price.
"Gosh, this is expensive" I say.
"Oh boo-hoo. I know how much you earn by being a police force, Peter." she says. I guess I just wasn't used to the fact I'm earning money on my own. My parents couldn't have afforded this.
Christina passes me my crutches and then the room falls silent. She fixes her things while I fix mine.
I was going to say good bye but then she whispered something.
"Pardon?" I say, not hearing her the first time.
"Stay away from her, stay away from Tris." she says. I was going to protest that she didn't have any say in my decisions but then she adds, "If you don't want me to break both of your feet, I rather you stay away from her" and she was gone.
Breaking both of my feet wasn't really much of a threat but having one foot already incapable, I can't have the other broken too. I sigh and walk towards my room with these crutches.
TRIS
"Christina, you know we're going camping. Where have you been?" I ask her. She was panting trying to fit all she needs inside the bag.
"Why are you bringing a curling iron, Chris? I believe there's no socket in the forest" Lynn jokes. Christina put away the curling iron. I guess when you are really in a hurry you pack even the stupidest things. Lynn laughs.
"It's camping, not Prom" We all look at Christina's pack and her bag is filled with high heels and dresses. I start to laugh. Marlene even looks down and laugh herself.
"Oh come on, instead of laughing, could you help me here?" I put down my bag and help Christina in her packing.
"Are you guys sure you're not going?" I ask Lynn and Marlene. Lynn shakes her head.
"I guess it's better if we leave a little distant between the two of them" Lynn says pointing towards Marlene.
"I guess" I whisper.
"Guys, I'm over with all that happened. And if we changed our minds, there isn't really much to time to pack anyways. Uriah won't even want me there" Marlene says.
"Can you guys at least have dinner with us?" I say. Marlene smiles, "Sorry, Tris. We already had dinner" I sigh as we pack Christina's last jacket.
I pick up my bag as Christina zips her last and we walk towards the café saying good bye to Lynn and Marlene.
FOUR
"What's in there, Christina, rocks?" I ask watching them walk down the stairs. She glares at me and I put my hands in surrender. Tris laughs behind her. She looks like she has a lighter pack but she was shivering.
"Tris, jacket?" She looks down at her bare hands as if only realizing that she didn't have a jacket on.
"I'll get you a jacket" she whispers an okay when I pass by her and walk towards her room. I knock on the door knowing Lynn and/or Marlene are inside.
"Come in" shouts Marlene.
I poke my head so they can see me, and slowly enter.
"Hey, Four! I thought you'll be joining the camping" Marlene asks. "I am. Just going to get Tris a jacket" Marlene sighs and slumps back on her bed. What made her so low? I open Tris's closet and get a black leather jacket. Something falls out of the jacket when I grab for it. I pick it up from the floor and see an envelope, still completely sealed. I flip the envelope and see these words scribbled on it:
Don't forget me. - Peter
My blood was boiling with jealousy. I walk out of the room, slamming the door behind me, hearing Lynn calling out my name.
Tris was laughing with Christina and the others, waiting for me. How could she be so happy?
"Four?" Uriah says. Everyone turns around and looks at me.
"Four, are you alright?" Tris asks. I raise the letter and her face falls.
"What's this?" I feel the anger rushing in my words, running through my blood.
"Where did you get that?" she asks.
"In your jacket" I say.
She steps closer.
"Why would Peter be writing to you?" I ask.
"It's none of your business." she says. I can already hear the anger in her voice. And she had the guts to be angry?
"None of my business? I'm your boyfriend, Tris. Don't you remember that?" I shout. Everyone stares at us, quietly. Evidently, they were also curious.
She steps closer and snatches the letter in my hands.
"Gosh, Four. Have you ever considered privacy? I don't care if you're my boyfriend, what's in this letter is none of your business" she says and storms away. Christina follows after her, shouting her name. Uriah lets out a deep breath.
"She'll cool down, eventually. Let's just wait"
I shake my head. "You guys go on without me. Just see you tomorrow"
And I leave.
