Mac was sitting in his office when Jo and Adam came back from lunch. Jo walked back to her office while Adam was headed for Mac's.

"Hey Boss, can I talk to you for a sec?"

Mac looked up from the DD5s he was working on. "What's on your mind, Adam?"

Adam entered the room slowly as Mac gestured for him to take a seat.

"Have you noticed anything weird about Jo?"

"Like what?"

"Uhm, well, uh, her eye is swollen."

Mac looked at Jo's general direction to think about whether or not he had seen part of her face swollen.

"And, uhm, well, she's been very distant lately." Mac thought back to when he was trying to talk to her last. The last time they spoke, she seemed as if she was a million miles away.

"Boss," Adam tried to regain Mac's attention. "I've noticed these things because I used to do those things as a kid. Y'know, when my dad would..."

Even though Adam didn't say ... hit me, that's where Mac's mind went. The woman he's started falling for may be abused. The fun-loving, former FBI agent who drinks Coca-Cola with peanuts and dances in her office has been distant lately. He did notice a small bruise around her wrist a few weeks ago and Jo shrugged it off as a workout injury.

"Thanks Adam, you may leave." Mac had to think of something to know for sure what is going on. All he could think of was the beautiful woman who was just down the hall.

Jo had gotten an email from Mac saying that he wanted to meet with her after her paperwork was done. She lightly knocked on Mac's glass door, having been waved at to come in.

"Mac, I got your email. What's going on?"

Mac looked up, and surely enough, although hidden, he could see part of a swollen eye.

"Can you take a seat for me please?"

"Mac, what's going on? You're scaring me." She sat down cautiously, as to not hurt herself any further than she was.

"What happened to your eye?"

"What?"

"Why is it swollen?"

"Oh, that." Her heart was pounding. She already lied to Adam, and now she has to lie to the guy she's been falling for. She started falling for him months ago, but he is her boss, so nothing can happen. Right? "I, had an allergic reaction to makeup wipes." At least she was consistent, because that was the same lie she told Adam.

"Okay. And what happened to your wrist a few weeks ago?"

"I told you that I fell down the stairs of my apartment building."

Mac's heart sunk. That's not what she told him a few weeks ago.

"Mac walked to the front of his desk with a wet paper towel in his hand. "Use this on your eye."

"What?"

"Your black eye. Let me see how bad it is." Jo was shocked and scared a little bit. He knew, or at least, he thought he knew and if she removed the makeup from her eye, he would know for sure.

"Mac, I don't..." Jo was about to continue when she looked up from her lap and saw the hurt in Mac's eyes. She took the paper towel from him and started cleaning the makeup off of her eye. Once she was done, Mac could see shades of blue and purple.

"Who did this to you?"

"I ran into a door."

"That's crap. Can you tell me what happened? As well as show me your other injuries?"

Jo was about to lie and tell him that she was fine, but he could tell that she wasn't fine when she flinched as he came near her.

"Mac, I..." Tears started rolling down her cheeks rapidly as she was trying to form any version of a sentence.

Mac took her hand and sat next to her on his office couch. "What happened?"

He couldn't hear her as she was sobbing into his chest. As soon as she came up for air, she wiped the tears from her eyes.

She started unbuttoning her shirt, revealing the bruises from her chest and abdomen. Once her shirt was off, Mac could see the hand-shaped bruises on her arms and neck.

"My god, Jo..." She was visibly shaking. Mac was looking at every cut and bruise, new and old, to figure out if she needed hospitalization.

"Who did this?"

For a few minutes, Jo said nothing. It wasn't until Don came into the room that she said something.

"Don, what are you doing here?"

After realizing for a moment that she was topless in her boss' office with two men, she tried covering up. Don took off his jacket and handed it to her to put on.

"We need to take you to the hospital Jo."

Jo was trying to breathe, but she was just hyperventilating. It became too much that both Don and Mac had grabbed her and moved her back to the couch.

"You're okay, Jo. You're safe." Mac whispered. He's never seen her afraid of anything before. Former FBI agent turned crime scene investigator is now afraid of whoever did this to her. Mac's heart sunk even lower, knowing that the woman he's been slowly falling for is now in pain, afraid of repercussions of whoever did this to her.

All Jo could do was cry into Mac's shoulder. How did she not know that it was this bad?
