Chapter Ten
Surprise
Hey guys, I know it's been a LONG time since I updated this story but I've had a lot on and I didn't want to screw this chapter up. Anyway thank you for people who have not given up on me and continued to follow, favourite and review, I cannot thank you all enough. I hope to update soon again but now I've got Why Jane and Courage to update Thank you all so much for your support.
We just continued to stare at each other in silence. The silence was long and painful. I hoped he didn't hate me, I didn't know if I could survive without him. I needed him and I was sure he needed me. I sighed diverting my eyes down, not wanting to look him in the eye. I bit my lip. The sharp touch of my tooth helped to stop me from crying. Frankie then leaned forward and took my hand in his and looked into my eyes as he spoke.
"Damien did that?" Frankie whispered. He didn't really mean it as a question but I felt he just wanted me to talk to him. I moved my eyes away from his and opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out so I just closed my eyes before sighing. I reopened my eyes and whilst still avoiding his I nodded. "How many times?" He questioned further. We were too much alike, I usually didn't mind and actually quite liked it but on matters like this I wish we could be just a little bit different. I continued to look away from his as I shook my head and said,
"I don't know." Frankie gave my hands a squeeze to get me to look at him. He squeezed my hands gently and it felt like a comforting gesture so I gave in, he's the only one that could ever get me to do that. My eyes flickered up to meet his.
"What do you mean by that?" Frankie said gently, his voice breaking as he spoke. This was breaking his heart, I knew it and it was killing me to continue. I felt the tears coming so I blinked a few times before taking another deep breath.
"I didn't..." I began before coughing and starting again, "I didn't exactly keep track." I tried to smile but only the right side of my mouth would move.
"I'm so sorry, Jane," Frankie whispered, putting his right hand on top of our entwined hands.
I looked down at our hands as I spoke, "Why?" I asked, "It's not your fault, you weren't there."
"I know but I should have been," Frankie said, "your my sister, I should be able to protect you, even if it from our uncle, why wasn't I there..."
"Frankie," I said, interrupting his speech, "don't you dare talk like that, ok? This is not your fault! You were only a boy. I tried to get away from Damien but there was no way he was going to let me, if you had been there I doubt you could have made any difference. He could control us just by looking at us, remember? I could keep us quiet, just like he did to me..."
"I wouldn't have stayed quiet..." Frankie began.
"No you wouldn't, Frankie," I interrupted. "I dread to think what he would have done if you'd been there." We both stayed quiet from then on and the silence lasted a long time until I felt my heart sink because I saw the sorrow in his eyes. "I'm sorry Frankie, truly I am, it's Damien, even in death he has his effects on me." Frankie shook his head.
"Don't Janie, don't blame yourself, please..." Frankie began before he stopped and sighed. "I better get back." I nodded at him in understanding. "Will you be ok?" He asked.
"I'll be fine, I just think I want to go home for the day, I'll be back tomorrow," I said, I was staying on the case, I'd had an emotional day, I knew when to take a break.
"If you need me, ring me," Frankie said, standing up. I stood up and he wrapped his arms around me, making me feel safe and secure in his arms.
"I will," I whispered into his ear, "I love you."
"I love you too," he whispered before letting go and heading for the door to leave the brig, leaving me standing there holding back tears.
When I got home I closed the door and ran over to the sofa and collapsed on it. I don't know when I fell asleep but the next thing I knew I was being awoken by a doorbell ringing. It nearly gave me a heart attack and in the process I landed on the floor with a bang. The doorbell rang again.
"I'm coming," I shouted in a raspy voice. I looked at my watch as I stood up. It was 10 o'clock. There was only one person who came to visit me at this time, Maura. She was probably just checking on me but I kind of wished she would leave me alone until morning, she knew that after an emotional day the devil was probably better company for her.
As I reached the door I sighed before opening it to reveal the last person on Earth I ever expected to see, stood there in a coat smiling at me.
"Daddy?" I said to him in disbelief.
"So, you gonna invite in your old man or not?" He asked after a few minutes of us standing there staring at each other.
"Err... Yeah, yeah, come in," I whispered, stepping aside to allow him to come in. After closing the door of the apartment I turned to him and asked him, "Err... What are you doing here, Pop?"
"Coming to visit my daughter, do I need a reason?" He asked me.
"At 10 o'clock at night usually yeah," I said, he looked at his watched in surprise when he realised the time. "Did you hear about Damien?"
"Err... Yeah, I did," He said, looking down.
"You realise that we are all suspects, right?" I asked him.
"I know what you're doing Janie," he told me, sighing, "and you can forget it, I'm not going down to headquarters..."
"But Dad..."
"But nothing, Janie, I am not going down to the station unless you arrest me!" Dad shouted as he stepped towards me and I found myself tensing as if I was scared of him. He seemed to sense this and gently brushed my arm, "you wouldn't arrest me, would you?" I shook my head.
"No," I said simply, not taking my eyes off his, "unless you killed Damien." Dad turned around and walked away from me. After a few steps he put his head in his hands.
"Pa? Are you alright?" I asked him.
"I'm fine, Janie," He whispered so quietly that I hardly heard him. "Don't you worry about me." He turned round to look at me, "you know, I know you don't like people telling you this, but you really do look like your mother." I tried to smile but he was putting me on edge and I didn't know why. Suddenly he came at me and grabbed my arms, "I've missed you, Janie." He whispered in my ear. "I'm sorry I left, I didn't know what else to do." Then he pushed me at the wall and I gasped in shock.
"Pop what are you doing?" I asked as I pushed against him. He put all of his weight onto me as he kept our eye contact. "Pa you're hurting me, please!"
"I'm sorry Janie, I have to do this," I said.
"Do what?" I asked, continuing to push at him. The next thing I knew, he had a cloth over my mouth. I could smell Chloroform as I tried to pull away but he was too strong and soon my world was starting to go black. He let go and I fell to the floor. He grabbed me again and pulled me onto his knee.
"I'm sorry," he said, as he stroked my hair.
Then the blurred figure of my Dad turned to black and I couldn't feel his hand on my hair anymore.
