Strike Witches: Mini Adventures
Chapter 10: Shirley's Speed Race
Request filled for: N/A
Place: Yokosuka, Fuso
Time: After the end of Legendary Witches 2: Return (see A/N for details)
Captain Charlotte E. Yeager "Shirley", has always been a speed freak, even before the military during her time at the Bonneville Flats. Her goal has always been to be the fastest and she will not settle for second best. What happens when the world's most powerful witch, Lieutenant General Kye Miyafuji, comes along and shatters her striker speed record? She stays silent, but years later, in 1952, she wants to prove herself to be the fastest witch in the world.
"Oh, really?" Kye asked. "That sounds like fun. Sure, I'll play."
Four months after the Strike Witches returned from the future mission, the witches gathered again for another four month reunion. Shirley wanted to have a speed race to see who the fastest witch was.
Using their third generation jet strikers, Shirley and Kye lined up in the skies above Yokosuka. The rest of the witches were floating in a spread out line, each several kilometers apart.
"We start here." Shirley said. "Lucchini will say when to go, and Commander Minna will clock us."
"Sounds good to me." Kye replied as she offered her hand to Shirley. "May the fastest witch win."
The two shook hands. "Right."
"Get ready everyone!" Lucchini said. "You will start out using only your strikers until you pass by Lynne and Perrine. When you pass them, you may use your full power until the end of the race. On the mark of three!"
Shirley and Kye readied themselves.
"One. Two. THREE!"
The two witches took off at full speed. Kye had the advantage immediately. Her striker's acceleration was much higher than Shirley's allowing her to reach maximum speed much faster.
Kye topped out at 1600 kilometers per hour, or roughly Mach 1.3, in fifteen seconds and passed by Lynne and Perrine, marking the first checkpoint, in another fifteen seconds, taking a total of thirty seconds for her first mark.
Shirley topped out at 1800 kilometers per hour, or roughly Mach 1.45, in thirty seconds and passed the first check point in another ten seconds, taking a total of forty seconds for her first mark.
The distance between the starting line and first check point was twenty kilometers, whereas the distance between the rests of the checkpoints was forty kilometers each.
As soon as each witch passed the first checkpoint, they activated their Magic Auras and pushed it to their limits. Kye arrived first and took four seconds to reach her maximum speed of 4800 kilometers per hour, or roughly Mach 3.85. She took a total of thirty one seconds to reach the second checkpoint, where Sanya and Eila were waiting.
Shirley arrived at the first checkpoint slower and speed up slower, but ultimately reached a higher speed of 5400 kilometers per hour, or roughly Mach 4.13. She took a total of twenty eight and a third seconds to reach the second check point.
The rest of the check points were all forty kilometers apart. Trude and Erica were waiting at the third check point, and Yoshika and Rei were at the fourth. Mio and Minna were at the finish line.
Both witches maintained their top speed throughout the rest of the race, Shirley taking twenty six and two thirds seconds for each checkpoint thereafter and Kye taking an even thirty seconds each.
Shirley almost caught up to Kye by the fourth checkpoint and passed her up with only seconds to spare at the finish line.
"Shirley wins!" Minna called. "Her time was one hundred forty eight point three repeating seconds, or one third. Kye's time was an even one hundred and fifty one seconds. The race was close, but Shirley has proved herself to be the fastest witch."
"Not only did she win the race, however close it was, but she held the higher speed." Mio added. "Kye managed to fly 4800 per hour whereas Shirley managed to reach 5400."
"You have broken Mach 4, Shirley. Congratulations!" Minna said.
"Woohoo!"
"Good job, Shirley." Kye said, offering her hand. "I want a rematch in our next reunion."
Shirley shook Kye's hand. "You bet."
"I look forward to it."
(A/N) The Magic Aura was introduced near the end of my story Legendary Witches: Return, but for those of you who have not read that story, the Magic Aura is simple. Any witch can learn it. While in use, it vastly increases the witches latent magic abilities. So if the witch has superhuman strength, their strength is increases several times over. If a witch has healing magic, their healing ability is increased.
Shirley's Magic Aura is called "Speed Aura". At her current level in this chapter, it increased her speed by three times, though her potential is higher. Once she masters her powers, she may see even higher speeds than three times.
Kye's Magic Aura is called "Zen Aura". She has already mastered her power, so there is no more room to grow, but her aura increases all of her abilities, including strength, speed, stamina, and magic output. Her speed was also increased by three times, but that's as far as she can go.
Disclaimer: The numbers (associated with Kye's "Zen Aura") used in this story may not be the same as the numbers used in Legendary Witches 2: Return (As such, the numbers associated with Shirley's "Speed Aura" may not be accurate either). The numbers used in this chapter should be treated as accurate only for this chapter.
Kye Miyafuji and Rei Miyafuji were both introduced in my story Legendary Witches 1: Worldwide Liberation. This chapter takes place four months after the end of Legendary Witches 2: Return during the witches' next reunion.
For the story in which this chapter (unofficially) follows visit my profile and look for Legendary Witches 2: Return. This story belongs to my Legendary Witches series, which Kye and Rei also appear in all the major installments.
This chapter should not be considered canon with the Legendary Witches series.
Edit (20-August-2014): Notes changed to reflect the "Legendary Witches" series it is based on.
