CHAPTER 10

Accidental borrowing

Edward's POV

"DAD! MOM!" I found Bella's eyes and a second later we flew through the door to Carlisle's study, I could hear the others behind me, my mind drowning them out to one single thought…screaming. My eyes bulged out of my head as I saw my precious daughter, floating in the air. Her hair cascading around her as if she was underwater.

What the fuck? "What the fuck?" Emmett cursed.

How is she doing this?

She looks like Lottie.

How is this possible?

Renesmee….

I focused on Nessie's thoughts; they were jumbled and becoming static. The more I tried the more I felt as if I was being pushed out. Books were flying off shelves, one with its pages flying violently from side to side when it landed face up. There were tremors beneath my feet. I felt myself pull towards my daughter.

I knew Jasper was trying to calm her down; his face was strained. Come on Ness….just let me in! "She's fighting it!"

I saw Carlisle dash from the corner of my eye. IM Diazepam, 30 mg should at least bring her down.

"No way Carlisle!" I shouted.

Be reasonable Edward. This isn't normal! Carlisle thought in half a second.

I saw Nessie snap her head over to his direction. "NO!" she grabbed the sides of her head, clutching at her hair. I could sense the panic of the unknown exuding from her but I could no longer hear her.

Carlisle picked his steps carefully towards her. "Just to calm you down Nessie."

"Renesmee, it's ok darling," Bella soothed.

"We are here for you Nessie. Just try and breathe," I said calmly. A strong wind picked up in the room becoming a tornado around us. I could see Nessie's eyes darken; I had seen that before. Carlisle took another step and Nessie shot over Carlisle, the double windows shattering into a million pieces just before Nessie flew through, the shards of glass being picked up in the wind and blown around the room. I ran to the frame and watched my daughter fly from sight. Taking no notice of the glass piercing through my shirt, bouncing off my crystal skin.

I looked back and found Bella's golden eyes. Her clothes had shreds and holes in from the flying glass which now hit the ground like soft tinkles of music. Alice shut her eyes.

There she was, in the middle of the forest, in the dark, the moon was high in the sky. Coming to the base of the Olympic mountains. Five boys appeared from nowhere, one wearing a letterman jacket; shocked, shooting at my daughter. She raised a hand, the bullet deflecting off an invisible shield. The boy who's gun was smoking from its release suddenly dropped it and grabbed at the his neck, clawing at his neck which was being crushed in an invisible vice like grip. Nessie, one hand out, her eyes dark, her fingers closing together…

"NO! We cannot allow this to happen!" I stared at Alice as she came out of her vision.

"What?" Bella grabbed my hand. "What happened?" her head snapping between Alice and me.

"Who in their right mind takes weapons that do not belong to them and think it is fun to go gallivanting in a forest they hardly know?" I shouted to myself. I turned to my family. "Some humans….." I hissed. I took a breath. "The boys who are out with the guns. She is going to kill one of them," I said quietly.

Bella's mouth formed and O. We can't allow this Son, said Carlisle.

We need Lottie. Emmett looked at me.

I shook my head, "She hurt herself earlier Emmett and I don't think she physically and mentally ready for this."

"Can we have a verbal conversation please?" Bella scowled.

"Sorry. Emmett thinks we need Lottie. I don't think she could cope."

"And why not?" Jasper folded his arms.

"She took a knock to the head earlier."

Jasper turned to Alice, picking glass from her hair. "When does the vision happen?"

"The moon was high, we have an hour, maybe more."

"Where is Jacob?" Carlisle asked as he sent a text on his phone. I knew he was warning Esme.

"He is with his sister and Billy in Seattle," and on cue, my phone rang. I retrieved it from my pocket. "Jacob." I knew he would be feeling something.

"What's happened to Ness?"

I quickly explained about the boys with the weaponry, what happened and could happen. "We are coming up with a plan."

"Fucking idiots! I'm on my way. I'll find you. Give me thirty minutes. I'll go flat out." And he hung up.

"How are we going to go up against her?" Alice asked. "She will be unable to reach."

Tranq gun? Emmett thought. "That's not a bad idea. It's getting close to her though," I rubbed my forehead with the palm of my hand.

"What?" Rose was shaking more glass from her hair.

"Tranquiliser gun," I could see Emmett picturing an elephant with a red dart coming from it. "Where would we get one?" I asked more to myself. "Zoo?" I got my phone again and rang Jacob.

Five rings later I was about to give up. "What's happened?"

"Jacob. I need you to break into a zoo and get a tranquiliser gun."

There was a pause then a snort. "You're gonna knock her out? Think that'll work?"

"What else do you suggest? We can't hurt her."

Would it work? Emmet said.

… Alice saw nothing now. Jacob was involved somehow.

Jasper was looking at the floor. How can one bag of blood cause all of this? How is it possible?

"Who would be able to get close enough?" Jacob asked.

"It depends. If Nessie could deflect it from the gun, then someone would have to get in range or distract her so that someone could tranq her. I don't know Jacob, just….hurry." I hung up, my phone buzzing instantly. "Sam."

"We heard. Seth is out there now with Keith and Colin. Jared, Embry and Quil are patrolling the border, Brady is going to tail the college boys and Charlie. I am coming to you, you will have eyes and ears." He hung up, it had helped that Jacob voided the treaty border lines years ago. I felt Esme and Lottie's presence downstairs.

I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Carlisle, what were you doing with her blood?"

"I was going to test it, see what properties it possessed." I could tell he was being sincere. "She offered it when Nessie miscarried." I wasn't to know.

"I know. We need to formulate a plan. Rose. I need you out there now," I paused. "Don't get too close, I don't want her getting scared," I instructed.

"I'm going too," Bella took Rose's hand then they were gone.

I walked out of the study, dashing downstairs. Alice was still trying to see but there was nothing. The wolves were too in the way. She could still see a vision of Ness in the future, sitting with her friends at school. I held onto that. Lottie and Esme were standing at the large windows. Oh son. Esme looked at me forlornly. Ben and Tia came through the front door. "Bella sent us," he said simply. Their' eyes were golden; they had been hunting. I paced, thinking, trying to drown out the thoughts of the others.

How do we get close enough to tranq her? Jasper said.

How could this happen? How can one bag of blood cause this? Carlisle was blaming himself.

I can't see a thing, nothing. God damn it! Alice huffed in frustration.

I think we use Lottie. She would be able to contend with her. She could be the distraction…Emmett thought. "That's not a bad idea." I spoke directly to him then stared at Nessie's friend.

She looked at me then at Emmett who started to grin. "No. I don't think I can. I don't think I can without…."

"I think you are going to have to Charlotte," I stated. "Ness is there already. She is freaking out." I pulled my vibrating phone from my pocket.

"We are following; she is causing earthquakes and damage to the forest area. There are trees and rocks uprooted. She has stopped for now; she is about thirty miles in." Rose hung up.

"She's stopped. We have to get there. Carlisle, is there any meds you have at hand?"

"She would stop me before I could administer it. Tranq gun would be the best way. I don't stock anything apart from valium, I'll prepare something just in case," he dashed upstairs.

"We don't have much time Charlotte. We need to go now," I pleaded. The right side of her face was different shades of purple; she had tied her hair into a knot with a clip. She was still wearing the clothes she wore when I saw her. Her thoughts were less static the more attuned I became to her, although she could still block me off like Nessie had just done. You know I can't Edward. You know I could kill someone. I haven't got full control, her eyes filling with tears. "But you have some," I challenged her.

"Lottie, you can do this," Emmett encouraged.

"I will help," Ben was beside me.

Jasper stood next to Esme. "She is shielding herself, the same way you can. You need to break that down. Ben can contain what she damages with the elements. But you need to get in. You need to break down the shield she has made. Just enough for a clean shot."

Lottie shook her head. "What if I lose it?"

Emmett grabbed her shoulders, bending down to look her right in the eyes. "You can do this. You lost control yesterday but you got yourself back. Nessie hasn't experienced this; she doesn't know how to control that much power. You do. Don't let your power become you, consume you or control you. You control it. You can do this. Yes you may get a little bug eyed and veiny but it's nothing you can't handle," he smiled. "You got this. You did yesterday."

"She will kill someone if you can't help," I said. "Alice has seen it. There are college boys in there, drinking, shooting at anything, they shoot at her and she kills one by choking them with …."

The girl in front of me took a deep breath. "Ok," her shoulders slumping. How the hell am I going to do this? I couldn't even protect myself when I fell…. She sub-consciously rung her fingers together.

I'm here. Sam made his presence known. "We are leaving soon," I told him. Carlisle came down the stairs, my phone buzzing again. "Jacob."

"Got one. Found it in the elephant pen. It has Fentanyl in it. Its small but it has the cartridges with it. I may have been seen."

"We'll sort it. You need to make sure you don't get yourself-"

"It's in a case. I'll have to carry it in my mouth. I'll run flat out. I'll be there in ten, fifteen at the most. I'll follow Sam's lead." He hung up.

"Jacob is on his way. Jasper, I need you to go there later to erase the cameras," he nodded. Emmett picked Lottie up in his arms. Esme was out the patio doors first and we followed. Sam was running ahead, following Nessie's scent. It became apparent that the scent wasn't what we were following as uprooted trees, rocks and dirt were destroyed in a straight path through the forest.

We ran in silence. I knew Carlisle had prepped a few syringes with valium but whether it would work was a different story. Ben was going through plans in his head. Esme was thinking about going back later to put the trees back into the ground. She didn't seem worried and had confidence in us to pull this off. Lottie had her head buried in Emmett's shoulder, not looking as he ran. DON'T GET ANY CLOSER! I heard Seth shout through Sam's head. I could feel Embry's pain as he had just been slammed against the rocks at the base of the cliffs I saw in Alice's vision. It was getting darker sooner than I had expected. "Stop!" I half shouted. Screwing my head up, feeling the pain of the impact. I had to shake it out, he would be ok. I could hear the thoughts of the moronic college boys getting closer and I had an idea. "Bella…." She appeared from the shadows, her hair in disarray, I had an idea. "Call Charlie. Tell him to back off. Carlisle, take the syringes, drug those boys. Brady estimates they are five miles from where Nessie is."

He nodded. "I'll go with you," Esme took a syringe. Rose appeared, her clothes torn. I got too close was all she thought. She took one as did Tia. Alice followed suit.

"We will drug them from behind at the same time. Cover their eyes, inject into the tops of the arms, these are high doses, it will take a few minutes for it to take effect," Carlisle ordered.

Sam changed into human form, pulling his pants on. Carlisle had prepped six doses and Sam took the fifth. "I'll go, Jared is coming, he will take a syringe, one of you needs to disarm them. Jared jumped out from the forest, wildness in his eyes. Alice handed him the syringe. I am the fastest, she thought.

Carlisle quickly popped blue pills into his hand and gave Alice the empty packet. "Plant them on one of them. It will account for the valium in their system." She took the packet, nodding once.

They took off south, Bella just getting off the phone. "Dad is backing off, but he isn't happy and he can't explain to his squad, I told him that he was to give us five minutes. I will call him when he can go near." I heard the one voice that was a bell in the all the chaos. He is really not happy Edward. Bella thought, projecting her other shield out for me to hear. I gave a sharp nod, something we would have to deal with later.

Jasper, Emmett, Ben, Bella and I were left, Emmett put Lottie down carefully and she bent down, holding onto her knees, catching her breath. I could hear screaming and although it was in the distance, it made me chill to the core. Nessie was possibly losing her internal battle. We had to act fast. The group that headed south were now out of my telepathic range, Lottie was still recovering, Emmett handing her a bottle of water. I couldn't hear Jacob yet but I knew from Seth that he wasn't far away.

Gunshots rang out from the distance making Lottie jump. I heard no screams or shouts, hoping that the two Quileute's were not caught in the bullets. I could see from Seth's point of view that this was making Nessie more agitated; trees being uprooted where he stood. He wasn't close to her but was in her proximity. I ran to Emmett, placing a hand on Lottie's back. "Are you ready?" she nodded, taking a deep breath, her face now resolute. Emmett picked her up again as we ran north, the forest was now a mess, trees cracked and roots curling into the air.

We abruptly cleared the forest as we came to the base of the Olympic mountains. I had seen Nessie through other eyes but nothing prepared me for what I saw; it made us all stop. She was fifty feet in the air and looked as if she was being crucified on an invisible cross, her head back, neck exposed, hair billowing around her. Her hands were like claws and she was twitching. She was surrounded by a hurricane; branches, whole trees, rocks and shards were being thrown around her, but also protecting her. Under her feet, where the wind started had funnelled the grounds as more dirt, trees and rock joined the winds; the wind itself was around us, whipping at our clothes and hair. I could see Lottie holding onto Emmett as the wind was so powerful. Nessie sensed our presence, her head slowly came forward and her black eyes surveyed us and we were thrown back by an invisible force. I heard Lottie scream as we were thrown and I flipped in the air landing on my feet, Jasper, Bella, Ben and Emmett who had managed to catch Lottie landed further back than I had.

That's what happens if you get too close. Seth was at my side, pushing me with his nose, his fur being whipped around by the wind.

The other wolves were behind him, unable to get close. Embry was further back, favouring his right side. "Oh god!" Bella's hand found her mouth.

"How can we…" Carlisle had joined us. No one was hurt. Charlie is taking care of them now. He reassured. He gave me the last syringe.

Jacob was less than five minutes out; I could read it from Keith's mind who was on the other side. I stared into his eyes and I looked up at the top of the cliff. He looked back at me, getting the idea. Hopefully passing it on. I stared at my daughter, unable to read her like her mother, being protected by her own body. Being betrayed by her own body.

I felt helpless.

I saw her from different angles through the others eyes, but I felt determination from one young lady. Emmett grabbed her by her bandaged hand and pulled her up from the ground. "You got this," he told her.

Jasper was at her side. "Just remember; you control it," he squeezed her arm.

She nodded, walking forward, taking Ben's hand as they made towards my daughter, Ben having to almost drag Lottie as the wind was making her unsteady. I ran to the right so I could see from the side, just to make sure that this girl did not kill my daughter and in case Jacob failed. If Jacob were here she may have not gotten this far. He would have been the only person to be able to calm her down. I knew that she trusted us but with her being Jacob's fiancé, trust was there, deep to the core. Imprinted.

Ben stopped, Lottie continued on. Ben rooted himself to the spot, his hands out as the wind parted, allowing Lottie in. He controlled the hurricane, bringing it further in from the forest, allowing us all to take a few steps forward and it no longer affected us as he contained it. Lottie held her hands out and I could see Nessie's shield as Lottie forced her way through. It shattered as Lottie calmly walked through then she was thrown to the ground again. Being tossed around like a rag doll along with broken trees and rock; I could barely hear her scream against the ravaging wind as she whirled round and round that Ben was able to control externally but not inside the funnel he made. Emmett and Jasper rushed forward but were thrown into the distance from sight, Alice and Rose dashing after them. My mind focusing on the scene ahead.

Nessie's face darkened at Lottie's intrusion but her tears were showing a different story. I got a quick insight. Please help me…..I tried hard to read her but I was getting flashes then nothing. It was as if her mind knew it was being heard but not allowing her to take control. Just like how Lottie's power took over her in Italy, it was doing the same to Nessie. Lottie landed on the ground hard, chunks of boulders landing beside her legs, alarming her, making her look up; she ducked for cover holding her arm over her head. We watched in horror as the boulders bounced off her shield. NO! PLEASE, NOT HER! I heard Nessie plead with herself.

Lottie peeked through her arm to see that she unharmed. "CHARLOTTE!" I shouted. "GET UP!" Jacob was close, ten miles away; I could see him running through Keith's eyes.

Lottie got up and was off her feet but by her own accord. Her own eyes darkening, veins showing but she was controlling it as she flew up with fluidity. Rocks and trees bounced off her as they collided. She stopped, feeling the resistance of another shield and she punched it again and again and again until she was suddenly through; the bandages on her arms unravelling and joining the debris. She flew up; hair coming out of her clip as her own power made look like she was floating in water. We all stood and watched as that was all we could do. Standing by helpless. Lottie grabbed Nessie's head, bringing her forehead to Nessie's. "Don't let it consume you!" Lottie shouted. "It is just raw power, use your gift. Wrap yourself around it and filter it! You can do it Nessie. Don't let it become you."

Nessie was fighting it, thrusting out her hand and Lottie was thrown back again, flipped back in the air but flew right back at her taking her by the shoulders this time and forcing her to come down as they stood at the edge of the funnelled forest ground. "I CAN'T!" Nessie screamed, grabbing at her head, pulling her hair.

"You can!" Lottie screamed back. "Remember what you did! What you did in Italy!" she took Nessie's hand from her head and put it to her bruised face, her hand over Nessie's, still forehead to forehead "Feel them, feel my memories, feel them all, that gift is still yours Nessie, use your own mental defences to break down your mental shields. Take them and compartmentalise them. It's all raw balls of energy and power, untangle them into ribbons and take control of them."

Nessie fought against it but Lottie. "IT WON'T LET ME!" Nessie screamed.

"You can do it. You have done it before!" Lottie shouted back. The darkness in Lottie's eyes had faded back to her jade green but the veins were still there. "You are just scared and this is your body's way of looking after yourself. You have done nothing wrong. Don't forget that." I could smell the blood before Lottie's nose started to gush. "This is just raw power," blood running into her mouth as she spoke. The veins protruding on Nessie's skin were fading. "That's it, get it into ribbons, and control it."

I'm here, phasing….

I smiled for the first time. I stepped forward and put my hand out feeling the shield which was now flexible; I could push it. I kept my hand there, all of us watching helplessly; Emmett, Rose, Alice and Jasper had rejoined us. Ben was still controlling the wind but it wasn't as fierce as before. "Jacob is coming Nessie, he is going to help you, Edward and Bella are going to help you," Lottie encouraged. "Get the shield down. Thin it out. Pretend it's like a bubble and pop it," Lottie shouted. Nessie strained as she tried to fight inside her head and suddenly I could hear the jumble of emotion and power as loud in my head like the wind in front of us. Suddenly the shield popped and I could feel no resistance. Nessie was gaining control. But it was trying flood her again. Lottie's nose was gushing freely now, blood staining her and Nessie's clothes. "That's it Nessie! Keep going!"

Jacob appeared, naked at the top of a cliff edge holding a small gun in his hand and a dart in the other. He jumped down, Lottie throwing her hand out catching him in mid-air and bringing him down so he didn't injure himself in human form. He was behind Nessie, the wind picking up again as she sensed him. "No Nessie. It's me," Jacob whispered. "You love me and I love you. I am yours." Jacob wrapped his arm around Nessie from behind, bringing his long arm around her shoulder down to her waist, still holding onto the items he had. He was behind her, his mouth at her ear. "You know what I have to do, but I will never let you go. I love you no matter what."

Lottie let go, taking a step back, hands out and above her head as the debris rapidly dropped down as the wind stopped, protecting everyone from potential damage, the veins no longer prominent on her skin. Nessie's eyes changing from black to chocolate. Jacob showed Nessie the dart; she nodded and he thrusted it through her arm into her skin. Nessie's hands dropped to her side as she slumped into Jacob.

He scooped her up, discarding the dart, unashamed of his naked form as he ran towards me. "She's out," he said handing me the gun.

"Take her back to the cottage," I said. He faded into the forest. The silence was deafening as I surveyed the area. It looked like a force five hurricane had blown through. Lottie crumpled to her knees then melted into the ground, rolling forward into the hollowed out ground. Keith phased and rushed towards her followed by Emmett and Carlisle. Jasper stayed back, Alice holding onto him. He was holding his breath.

Bella took my hand. "I'm going back to the cottage."

"I need to stay here," I said. "We need to do damage control. You go," I kissed the back of her hand. "Tell her I love her."

"She knows," Bella embraced me quickly and she disappeared into the night.

I rushed towards Nessie's human friend. Carlisle was assessing her. Keith holding her in his arms; whispering in her ear. Esme was now here, her arm around my waist. "Knew you could do it kid," Emmett said softly.

"Thanks," Lottie croaked. She peered up at me. "Will she be ok?" Flecks of blood touched the ground as she spoke.

"I hope so," I wasn't sure. I wasn't going to alarm her. Are you ok? I heard Lottie clearly. I nodded once, not sure who I was trying to convince.

Keith stood up carrying Lottie in his arms. "She needs to come back to the main house. I need to pack her nose, get the bleeding under control. She may need more blood," Carlisle advised. I saw through his eyes, there was more blood on the ground that I first realised, she wasn't clotting and it was splattered all over the grounds. Get that blood ready Edward, we can transfuse her own back in and some more. I need to give her something to help her clot; she's burst a vessel. She's losing more than normal. I need to watch her airway. I may need the cauterising machine.

I nodded. Emmett looked between our quick exchange, Keith oblivious to it as he held onto her. I turned on the spot and ran towards the main house.

Nessie's POV

I felt warm and loved. I was in big warm arms. I moved so I could listen to his calming heartbeat, my head rising up and down with his breathing, my own breathing mirroring his. I was wrapped around him like ivy. I didn't want to let him go. I felt like my mouth was full of cotton. My arms and legs felt heavy. My head felt like lead. "It's ok Nessie. You're ok," his warm tones soothed me. I knew I was ok now.

I still felt energy pulsing through me but not like before. I felt different. I felt powerful but now in control. Being tranquilised had helped. Being under allowed me to take the raw power and filter it instead of it becoming a tempest inside my head. The feeling of lead was slowly lifting from me; I could see light flickering through my eyelids. "Mmmmm," I groaned. My throat felt scratchy like I had been screaming for hours.

"Hey cutie," he said softly. I lifted my head up, opening my eyes and finding his dark orbs gazing at me. Light flickered and I saw a candle on the cabinet. His arms enveloped me and I didn't want to leave. "You don't have to leave."

I was projecting. Thank you for coming.

"I'm always here. How are you feeling?"

I took a deep breath. Zingy….

"Zingy," he chuckled. "Okay, we will go with zingy."

My throat burned but not for blood. Is there any water?

Jacob reached over by the candle, reaching over for the glass of water. I could hear the ice clinking together, he brought it down to my lips and I took a sip. "Better?" I nodded. He tipped it again so I could take a proper drink until I drained the glass. He put it back. I put my head onto his chest listening to his booming heart.

I felt Jacob take a breath. "Nothing to be sorry for. The way I understand it, you drunk the wrong blood. It was an accident. Everyone knows it. No one thinks otherwise. But you really need to use your brain. Read the labels," he admonished softly.

I know. It is my fault. Only me to blame. I closed my eyes, they were stinging.

Jacob hugged me tighter. It's done now, you need to chalk it down to experience.

I feel like I should apologise to everyone.

Maybe. But they know it was an accident. I promise no one is mad at you.

But your sister…..

"Is in the best possible place right now. She spoke with the doctor this morning and she finally persuaded Rebecca to go. She is in a private hospital that only Billy and I…and the pack know about. He won't be able to find her or send anyone to find her. She will be there for a month then will be reassessed. She will get physically examined and psychologically assessed. She knows it is in her best interest. The doctor was amazing this morning. The place she is in is secluded but with high security. She is safe and I am her next of kin, I will be informed of everything."

I'm glad that she is a good place. I hope she gets better. I looked down and saw that Jacob was completely naked. I could feel heat rise in my face. I sensed Jacob was smiling too. Flickers of memory flashed. "Oh!" I felt hot tears prickle my eyes. I watched as I destroyed parts of the forest, how I stopped my family from helping me, watching helplessly from somewhere in my head as my body reacted. I tossed her around like toy but she never stopped. I saw the dart with a red feather tip. Everything came flooding back. "Oh Jacob," I whispered.

"It's ok," he soothed, his arms tight around me. Making me feel secure. "No one is hurt." He let me sob for a while.

Minutes had passed; I sat up, Jacob loosening his hold around me. "I need to see everyone. Just to make sure."

"Ok," he swung his legs round onto the floor. He helped me stand up, I looked down at my torn clothing and I could feel that my hair was a rats nest. I looked into my closet which was open and saw a brush lying on a shelf. I walked forward, stretched out my hand…..the brush zooming into my hand making a soft thumping sound. "Uh….Ness…" Jacob stared at me. "Try that again," he took the brush out of my hand and stood at inside the closet. I put my hand out and I could feel invisible fingers take the brush from his hand and it sailed into my waiting one. "What does that feel like?"

"It's like when I borrow from Lottie, but when I'm touching her."

"Try something else."

I looked around the room. I saw the empty glass, I picked it up with my mind and I placed it onto the bathroom shelf. "This is insane," I whispered.

"You have full control of it now." I looked at Jacob and I lifted him a few inches from the ground. He was the weight of a feather. "Whoa!" he put his hands out to balance although I knew I wouldn't drop him.

"I can't explain it. It feels….it feels as if everything is sorted inside my head."

I put him down and he reached for some spare jeans that he kept here. "Does is feel permanent."

I thought for a moment. "No. It feels borrowed," I knew that with certainty.

Jacob snorted, buttoning up his jeans. "An accidental borrow."

"Something like that. I don't know how long it will last. I feel in control of it though."

"Maybe because you drunk the blood so quick, it was like an overdose."

"Or an allergic reaction."

"Could be. But you have Lottie's power without touching her. She is at the main house by the way."

Her name brought up my concern. "Is she ok?"

Jacob's face fell. "I don't know. She didn't look great when I left."

"What time is it now?"

"You were knocked out for twelve hours-"

"What?! Seriously?"

He nodded. "Yup. That tranq I darted you with? I found that in the elephant enclosure. It's been that and being tired that made you sleep for so long. It's after eleven thirty. And its Sunday," he added as an afterthought.

The urgency to pee just dawned and me and I flew into the bathroom. I rushed into the closet and every item I reached for sailed into my waiting hands. I was dressed within minutes and rushing out the door. "Where are Mom and Dad?" their scent was still fresh.

"At the main house, they left an hour ago. They stayed here all night."

I stopped, my hand reaching my mouth. "Oh Jacob, the amount of damage I caused last night…."

"Don't worry about it. A lot of the up rooted trees, some were put back. Sam took a lot of it to chop up in his back yard. He is gonna store it and pass it to the elderly folks on the reservations. Ben has fixed any loose earth and boulders. It is looking sparse at the bottom of the mountain but it won't go noticed. Not a lot of people go that way. If anything you made a clear path to that point," he joked.

"It's not funny," I pouted. He took my hand, shutting the door to the cottage.

"I know. I don't know what the people from Forks thought, they would have heard it all, the rumbling and the wind," I cringed at his words. "Best not mention it really. Let the gossips do their worst," he paused. "But there is something that Edward thought."

"And what's that?" we walked towards the main house.

"That you were more powerful than Lottie."

I took a moment to think. "How could that be though? This is her power."

"Half vampire."

"I don't know. Could it be cos I am in tune with her? Borrowing her power has left a footprint so to speak."

"We don't know cutie," he put his arm around me. "It has us all stumped." We walked in silence until we reached the main house and stopped. Jacob cupped my face in his hands, bringing his lips towards mine. I found my hands in his silky hair, pressing my body against his, his arms moving to around my waist. His tongue met mine as he darted it in and out. I kissed him back with fervour; I missed this. He pulled away quickly. "Uh…Ness?" He looked down.

I looked in his direction and we were floating about three feet from the ground.

Then we dropped. "Oooof," I landed on my backside, Jacob and I separating. We both got up, dusting ourselves down. "You know, this could make for an interesting week," I took his hand as we walked up the steps.

I reached to open the main door; it opening itself at my subconscious thought. Rose was standing in the kitchen as the door swung open, her mouth opening in shock as we were standing a few feet back. "Ness….what did you just do?" she stared at the door.

"I think I may have some residual telekinesis left."

"Do it again," she ordered, shutting the door. This time, without putting my hand out, I turned the door handle with my invisible hands and pushed it open.

"What else would you like her to perform?" Jacob rolled his eyes.

Rose narrowed her eyes but ignored him, moving out of the way to allow us to come in, she reached over to hug me. "Where is everyone?" I asked when she let me go.

"Jasper has been controlling the situation of the break in at a zoo in Seattle, he is on his way home now," Rose looked at Jacob. "Cos apparently whoever stole the tranquiliser equipment wasn't subtle enough."

"I wasn't given a lot of time to decide a plan," Jacob said defensively. "What did he do?"

"Removed all the surveillance and deleted video evidence. Replacing the equipment that was taken. Alice went with him. There was a lot of blood and he didn't want to be here."

"Who's blood?" I snapped my head at Rose.

"Lottie's. She lost at least two litres. She's upstairs."

I rushed past her, taking the stairs two at a time. Rose shouting for me but I didn't listen. I ran into Carlisle's study to find it empty, the curtain blowing in the wind and flapping through the broken window. The memory flashed back at me. I sniffed the air, about turned and went into the room that was opposite. Jacob was right behind me. "See, she's ok. I would have told you chica," he rubbed my back.

This was Esme's room; she used it to for her design and artwork. The room was airy and light. Painted a cream colour; she had an array of books on one wall, paintings adorning the rest. The back wall was clear glass with doors that opened out onto a small balcony. A desk that sat on the right and where her sofa usually was on the left was a hospital bed with my friend in it. She looked horrific. Emmett was at one side and Keith was on other holding her hand. Her eyes were open and she smiled. "Hey." Her bright green eyes stood out against her pale skin, the bruising on the right side of her face was angry and livid. But she was still smiling. Carlisle was taking notes. She was attached to a monitor; she had a blood pressure cuff on her left arm and a probe on her finger. Esme was sitting at the desk, Mom in Dad's arms by the open glass doors. Esme rushed over to cuddle me.

This was my fault. "No Renesmee. This was not your fault," Dad was suddenly at my side. "This was an accident. Lottie knew the risks involved. And I know she doesn't blame you," he tapped the side of his head. Esme let me go. Dad and Mom wrapped their arms around me.

"Ness," Lottie sat up. "No one could have known that drinking my blood would cause that reaction. It was an accident. And on the bright side? I finally have control of my power."

I stood next to Keith. "Nice to have you back," he smiled. He wasn't angry. No one seemed to be. I hadn't intentionally wanted to taste her blood.

"So," Emmett leaned back in the chair, swinging it back so he was leaning on the two back legs. "What did Lottie's blood taste like?"

"Emmet!" Esme scolded. "That is inappropriate!"

"Bit disgusting to be honest," I smirked.

"Hey!" Lottie huffed. "I resent that."

"I think you taste good," Keith whispered. Lottie patted him on the cheek.

"I bet she would be hard to swallow. She would probably get stuck in your mouth," Emmett folded his arms.

"Ah, but I have a new talent," I flayed my fingers and the chair Emmett was in, swung back and he followed landing on the floor.

He shot up from the floor, pointing at me. "How did you do that?"

"Secret," I tapped my nose. I looked at Lottie who was staring at me opened mouth. "I know, not even touching you."

"But…..how?" She looked bemused. "What else can you do?" Mom and Dad were just as shocked.

I looked at Jacob and he rose in the air, my invisible hands becoming bigger to accommodate him as I lifted him with my mind. I felt as if I had full control now, now that I knew I just had to concentrate. I put him back down. Dad was still next to me. "Put a shield around yourself." I looked a little confused. "Like what Lottie does in training." Ok. I concentrated on making a thin sheet like Clingfilm and I wrapped it around myself. "Think of something," he instructed. I thought about how hot Jacob is. I stared at my Dad who shrugged. "Nothing." I touched his arm and thought about the bringing the brush to my hand. "I got that. You can still project your thoughts."

"Cool," I snorted, looking at my hand. Dad put his arm around me.

"This is very weird," Lottie said. "At least you don't get the after effects," she pointed to her nose.

"I am grateful for that. Why did you lose so much blood?" I asked.

Lottie looked at Carlisle. "Well, she had to use a lot of power, and the power she used she was now in full control of, and she just needs to practice to build up her stamina, like in the beginning, which she was doing anyway, but this one burst a vessel in her nose, this one was more serious as it wouldn't stop and clot," he looked at a black suitcase. "I transfused the rest of her blood and two more bags I had into her and I acquired a cauterising machine a few weeks ago which I was able to put the probe up there and burn the blood vessel. They repair themselves; so she will be fine."

"I can safely say that it was not pleasant. And it hurt," Lottie complained.

"After that, Esme, Keith and I took her to the hospital and she had a CAT scan as a patient, seeing as she took a fall earlier," he reassured.

"You got probed," Emmett laughed at his own joke. Jacob turned his head to laugh at the wall so Lottie didn't see him. Even Keith was trying to keep a straight face.

"Jokes, at my expense? I'm the one in the hospital bed, yet again," she rolled her eyes.

"Times up bint. You are over your self-composed ban on your witchery," he wiggled his fingers over her. "You got control, which means I can make fun of you again."

"Is that really necessary?" Lottie whined.

"Nope. But I like it!" Emmett ruffled her hair.

Lottie tried to move her head and stared at Keith. "Hey, you gonna chip in at any time?"

"Nah. I like watching you two banter. It's funny," he leaned back in his chair.

"And you are meant to be my Fiancé, the one who is meant to look after me."

"I have a hard enough time being your carer when you can barely walk in a straight line. I need a pay rise to keep taking all of this," he joked, making us all laugh.

"Oh thanks. I'm not that disabled you know."

Keith snorted. "I don't know about that. Have you seen yourself walk and breath at the same time?" This caused us all to laugh; even Lottie was trying to hide her smile. "You need a 'danger danger' sign, or a hazard sign. Something to warn people of your impending disablement. I mean the other day, you boob planted a door."

"What?!" I giggled. Everyone else just looked at her.

"How did you manage that?" Emmett raised an eyebrow.

"She was coming in the back door from feeding the horses when she tripped on fresh air and fell into the back door, it has a window, I was on the other side and cos she had her hands in her pockets when she fell into the door, she fell boob first. Shame the door wasn't open, I am sure I would have 'caught' her," he finger quoted.

We all burst out laughing again. It was nice to laugh; it felt good, even if it was at my friend's expense. Lottie was laughing too and when she lifted her arm to tuck a stray strand of hair away from her face, her arm was still red raw from earlier today. I sobered up again. "How are you going to explain the injuries?" I asked quietly. The rest of us were quiet again.

"Simple. I went ice skating," she looked around. "Oh come on, it's not hard to believe. I did and I fell down. A lot."

"It's plausible," Keith nodded, turning back to Lottie. "You can at least let Alice put some make up on, make the bruising look less angry," he traced a finger down her cheek, being careful not to hurt her.

"I could do that," Alice sailed into the room, Jasper behind her. "I'll come over tomorrow morning before school," she loped over to envelope me in her arms. "Glad to have you back."

Jasper was over, reaching his arms around me too. "You had us all worried," he patted my head. He let me go and Jacob snaked his hand back into mine.

Gemma suddenly burst through the door, Seth behind her. "Oh good God! Your face!" she rushed over, Emmett moving out of the way to let her in.

"It's nothing," Lottie brushed off.

Gemma bit her lip. "It's not nothing Charlotte. People are going to start asking questions. Bessie is already on the verge of leaving."

"So let her leave. She doesn't like me; I don't care!" Lottie exclaimed, Keith still holding onto her free hand as she gesticulated. She took a breath. "Look, this wasn't caused by Nessie. It was when I was ice skating, some idiot skated right into me and I went flying, I tried to use my power at the time and it went a bit haywire, so I fell, skidded, bounced off the ice and collided with the side."

Gemma sat down next to her, Seth standing behind her. "But last night, I could hear how bad it was." I cringed. "It was like a freak weather storm up there and no way to explain it and-"

Lottie cut her off. "I had to help. You know what happened but in the end it helped me too. I know I have control of all this new raw power, it's like it was before but better, stronger. I feel stronger because of it, I need to build up the stamina to support it."

"But Seth told me that you lost so much blood. What if that happens again, what if you have a stroke?"

Carlisle was at the bedside. "We have thought about this Gemma, Lottie and I spoke about this last night." This was news to me. "There is a risk, but like before, she needs to build up her stamina, she needs to practice more. If I thought she was at risk of a stroke I would be telling her to stop. Her CAT scan shows no signs of any damage, no tumours, nothing. The only scarring she has was when she had the shunt in years ago, scar tissue from where it was removed. The headaches tell her to stop and they will get less frequent the more she practices."

Gemma narrowed her eyes. "But I don't like that you are always getting hurt."

Lottie took her hand. "The ice skating really did cause this," she used a finger from her and Gemma's encased hand to point to her face. "I am that clumsy. And yes, the last few weeks have been a bit shit. Here's hoping we are passed all that now. There is always going to be a risk with vampire and wolves, but this time it wasn't any of that, not really. It's not like anything is broken. The bruising will go away. Besides which….I am a walking hazard as my loving fiancé keeps pointing out to me on a daily basis. I do need a carer. I could probably off myself without any help from the supernatural kind."

This made Gemma smile and relax a little. "You're my only sister. I kinda like you."

"I kinda like you too," she squeezed Gemma's hand and winked.

"But you need to remember that you are only human, mortal."

Lottie bit her lip, her smile fading. "I know. I know that I can't always 'save the day', that I have to let other people help me. I'm erractic, flawed and I can be a danger if I am not kept in check. That's why I have Keith," she smiled at him. "And you and everyone else. To keep me grounded. So stop worrying about me. Honestly, after last night, I know now I have a handle on it but I still need to practice; and I never thought it would be possible in such a short space of time. Alice is going to come tomorrow and do my face and I will be fine," Lottie yawned again.

"Ok," Dad said. "Lottie needs some rest. Why don't we leave her and Keith here and we'll go downstairs."

We all murmured in agreement. I waved and she smiled back. She was yawning again. Keith moved her over slightly and cradled her in his arms. I was out the door, Jacob behind me. "What would you like to do?" Jacob asked.

"I would love to spend time with you," my stomach rumbled.

Jacob looked down. "Well, we can fix that first," he pointed to the source of the noise. He smiled fully, showing his teeth, his smile reaching his eyes. "There is something else I need to do later," he chuckled, grabbing my hand.

We were in the kitchen were Esme was now fixing lunch. Seth was already at the table waiting to be fed. Alice was at my side, Jacob letting go of my hand. "Where is Jasper?" I noticed he had gone again as we stood by the large dining table.

"Disposing of the equipment," Alice looked out the large glass wall. I followed her eyes to the rising smoke through the trees. Alice flashed me another grin as she flitted over to Esme.

Gemma was sitting with Rosalie and Emmett looking through what looked like business stuff. Mom and Dad were now stood by the kitchen glass double doors, speaking in low voices. Jacob was now talking to Seth and I looked at my hands. Sun was pouring in through the glass wall and bouncing off the skin of my family making the reflective light dance on the surfaces. Sunlight shone on my hands and something caught my attention; I could see currents of blues, purples and greens pulsing underneath my skin. I wondered if anyone else saw this or if it was just me. "What are you staring at?" Jacob interrupted his conversation.

"I can see colours underneath my skin, can you see them?" I lifted my hands to show him.

He stared. "Nope. Not a thing. Edward?"

He turned. "I can't see anything either."

"Funny…I thought you all would see it….it's like the inside of a dark coloured sea shell that changes colours when you move it under the light."

"Maybe that's your borrowed power," Mom suggested, I walked over to her. "You have always been unique Renesmee. Who knows what else you may be able to do, if you can borrow Lottie's power like this, then I am sure there are no end to your talents." She smiled.

"I can show people my thoughts, more than one person at a time; I can hear someone's exact thought as I touch them, implode and can borrow, but only on one human at the moment; what else is left really?" I frowned.

"We don't know," Mom snaked her arms around me. "You amaze us all the time."

I could feel the heat in my cheeks. "Thanks Mom," I smiled, leaning down onto her. I was taller than her and now to the outside observer; we looked like sisters.

Jacob took my hand and I followed him to the large dining table, where Seth was helping Alice set the table for a gathering, who else was coming? Esme had two large plates of food on a tray and with a dash of wind; she sailed past us and up the stairs into her room. I could hear her ordering Lottie to eat. Alice finished up and disappeared out of the room, snagging Lottie's bag that had been left. What was that about? Esme came back down and there was tons of food set on the table. "Thanks Mom," Jacob imitated me. Esme beamed as she placed a large bowl of fries on the table. There was a massive pork joint in the centre with rare cooked steaks on another plate, fries, vegetables of all sorts, condiments, bread and butter. The back glass door opened and Quil, Embry, Jared, Colin, and Brady; all half naked throwing slaps or punches at each other as they came through the door. "Hey Boss," Quil hollered making Jacob roll his eyes. "Esme called," as if to explain the intrusion. It was never really an intrusion.

They all grabbed seats around the table, making Emmett and Rose leaving the table taking Gemma's paperwork with them. "Let us look at it," Rose offered. "Go and eat," she smiled patting her cheek. I looked at Gemma who was looking a little strained; she managed to get a seat next to Seth before Embry took it.

"Where's Sam?" I asked.

"With his family, he tries to spend as much time with them as he can, working and patrolling doesn't leave a lot of room for that," Jacob managed to say with a mouth full of steak. I laughed at my wolf boy. The others all started helping themselves. I managed to grab a steak before they all went; Seth had already put a plate on for Gemma. Esme was putting pitchers of juice onto the table. She was lucky not to get eaten. She patted Embry and Quil as she passed, both of them returning a smile of food making Esme chuckle.

I looked around and apart from Paul and Sam, all the wolves were here. "Is nobody patrolling?"

Jacob shook his head. "Rangers are up there at the moment assessing the scene with those boys that went up there last night. Didn't want to take the risk of one of my pack getting shot."

I nodded. Made sense. "What happened with that?" I asked generically.

Mom and Dad were now sitting at the kitchen counter, I heard Mom shift in her seat which made me turn and Mom chewed her bottom lip, deliberating on what she was about to say next. "Dad wanted an explanation; there wasn't much I could give him without telling him everything. He knew it was you out there last night, he could hear you screaming," I winced at her admission. "Now he wants to know everything. Sue has tried to talk him out of it but he wants to know in order to protect his men, one of the boys took a pot shot at them last night before you…when they were being tailed but also if there is the local authority going into the forest with weapons, he doesn't want one of the boys or us hurt," she looked down at her hands. "He is coming tonight."

I tried to swallow but found it difficult. "Oh." Jacob and the pack didn't seem bothered by this information. Jacob had told him about us being imprinted when we got engaged a while ago and he was angry at first and Jacob offered to go into details and he was still wanting to be in the 'need to know' category but last night must have changed that notion.

"Is this wise?" Carlisle had come down the stairs. He must have been happy with Lottie's progress to come down to join us.

Dad was playing with a strand of Mom's hair. "From what I heard last night, he wants to know everything. It's a risk but this is something Jacob has to start. We thought by Jacob telling him to begin with, it can't violate anything the Volturi will see as a break in the vampire law. In case Aro sees it when he rakes through memories. Sue, Billy and Quil know that their son's and grandson are shape shifters, Charlie can know as his granddaughter is imprinted to one and what she is, therefore he needs to know the….logistics."

I nodded. "Loopholes," I bit into a fry, chewing it slowly. "Do we tell him everything?"

Dad nodded slowly. "I think we have to. Five years he has never bothered, but last night his men were at risk and he had a hard job explaining why they needed to stop. I was at the station in his office this morning; none of the men suspect anything, but one thought that maybe Charlie has been in the job too long; but that thought will pass. He's tying up some loose ends with paperwork from last night so he will be round soon."

I took a drink from my glass. This was not what I was expecting. How was he going to react? This was a lot of news to tell Grandpa. Would he be able to handle it?

Would it change things?
