Chapter 10 : Mother
It was late at night and Shinra could not sleep. There was a lot on his mind recently and he couldn't settle down. He tried to get to sleep to no avail. Eventually he turned on a few lights and went to the kitchen to make himself a cup of tea, he hoped it would help him relax enough to sleep. He was worried and he knew exactly the reason, his father called him a few days ago.
It wasn't much of a conversation it was more like a warning.
"That girl, the one that had the sword, Nebula has new interest in her. Be careful."
That was all his father said on the phone, not even so much as a hello. Shinra thought about calling him back and ask something but he figured if the message was so short that it might not be safe to call. Or maybe his father just thought that was all he needed to know.
That was when the phone rang.
Shinra tried to pick up the phone fast before it woke up his roommate but he noticed he failed when he spotted his headless rider as a roommate enter the room.
"Who would be calling this late in the night?" Shinra questioned.
He wondered if one of his less than legal clients found themselves in the need for a doctor. "Hello."
"Shinra!" The voice blared on the other end.
The voice was young and scared and the doctor could hear shouting and screaming in the background.
"What? Whose this?"
"Mikado Ryugamine."
"Huh? What's wrong?" Shinra started to panic.
"Anri is going to labor. The baby is coming."
Shinra was speechless before he turned to Celty. "The baby is coming."
"THE BABY IS COMING!" Even without a face one could tell that was Celty was thinking. It also helped that by accident Celty mentally projected those words.
You'd think a doctor would be ready for this, you'd expect that such young parents might panic but you wouldn't expect a magical creature to panic along with everyone else. The group wasted about ten minutes trying to figure out what to do. They almost took Anri on Celty's bike until Shinra pointed out that would be no where near safe and neither would be turning the bike into a carriage. Eventually Mikado remembered he had the number of someone with a van.
In less then ten minutes the group of four arrived in their van to help take the parents to the hospital. Celty followed them with Shinra ridding with her.
The ride was hectic.
"Just take deep breaths." Kadota sat in the front seat and tried to keep the couple relaxed.
Mikado held Anri's hand as she tried not to scream because of the contractions.
Walker brought a video camera to film this.
"Push!" Erika yelled out.
"DON'T PUSH!" Togusa, who was driving, yelled. "Not in the van. Hold it until we get to the hospital!"
"I wonder if it will be born with a tail." Walker mumbled to himself.
"Like a monkey?" Erika asked.
"Yeah."
"No, that only happens with aliens."
This whole discussion was undermining Kadota's efforts to ease the couple. One would have to ask why they brought them but here they are.
In minutes they arrived at the hospital and Anri was checked in. The others were not allowed in with the soon to be parents despite all of Walker's complaints that he was to film it. In the end he gave the video camera to Mikado.
So the other waited. Shinra was the exception and walked away from the others.
He pulled out his cell phone and called someone.
They answered with a rough and angry voice. "What the hell do you want?!"
"Shizuo."
"Shinra? Why are you calling me so late?" He sounded a little bit calmer, not a lot but willing to listen to him,
"Ah, can you come to hospital?"
"Why did something happen?"
"Sort of. Remember those two kids?" Shinra quickly explained the situation.
"So their baby is coming?" Shizuo said a little confused. "Why do I have to be there? I'll get them a baby present later."
"No, I want you here." Shinra said sounding desperate. "I don't know. I can't explain it, I think something bad is going to happen soon."
They had been friends for a long time but Shizuo had never heard Shinra worry or remembered the last time when was the last he asked him for help.
"Fine, I'll be there as soon as I can."
As Shinra returned to the group he found Walker walking back to them. He seemed to be trembling.
"What's wrong?" Erika asked them.
"I went to check on them." Walker said sounding stunned. "I- I saw things. Bad things." The collapsed onto his chair. It would take an hour for Walker to snap out of it.
Shinra stepped out for a little to explain the situation as best he could to Shizuo when he arrived, the blond man shrugged it off but decided to stay outside should someone come.
The reason he didn't go inside was simple, he wasn't allowed to smoke in the hospital. He didn't know how long he stood there just smoking a cigarette but someone did show up.
"Oh, hello Shizuo-chan" Izaya said in his usual calm tone.
With the rage dripping off his voice Shizuo yelled. "Izaya!"
"Now now" Izaya told him. "stop before your hurt someone. If you start throwing things you might just end up hurting someone in the hospital."
Shizuo stopped himself from grabbing a nearby light post. "What are you doing here?"
"What I can't visit a hospital?"
"Why tonight?"
"Why not tonight? Is something special happening?"
"Are you trying to get me to believe that you just happened to show up when their baby is about to be born."
"Oh, a baby." A female voice said.
They turned around to see a blonde woman and a tall man both wearing samurai costumes.
Both men turned to the pair confused.
"Why are they looking at us Isaac?" Miriam asked.
"I think we might have distracted them." Isaac told her. "I think we've stumbled upon a show."
"Oh, I'm sorry continue."
"Please continue." Isaac urged them on. " I think you should continue the scene."
"Yeah with those red eyed monsters." Miriam pointed out to them.
"Red eyed monsters?" Shizuo questioned.
Looking behind them both Izaya and Shizuo witnessed a crown surrounding the hospital and each and everyone of them had glowing red eyes and they were all muttering one word over and over. "Mother, mother, mother."
"You two should go inside." Shizuo told them.
"I see." Isaac said out loud. "Must be building suspense before the climatic battle. We have to go inside for the other part of the story."
With that the unlikely pair walked into the hospital. Shizuo turned around and noticed that Izaya had vanished. "Damn flea."
Shizuo waited for them to make a move but none seemed eager to step forward.
As time passed Erika and Walker started to chat up Isaac and Miriam for a conversation no one could follow. Outside Shizuo waited like a good guard dog and was surprised to see each and everyone in that mob slink back into the shadows as the sun started to rise. Shizuo headed inside just as nurse arrived before the group.
"Come with me." The nurse lead them to a room.
They were lead into to find Mikado and Anri, Anri was in bed holding a pink bundle.
"Oh, it's a girl!" Erika squealed. "I call godmother!"
"That's not how it works." Kadota tried to explain it to her.
"Do you have a name?" Walker asked them.
"We really haven't decided." Anri told them sounding very tired.
She was a small girl with long messy black hair that reach her neck. The little baby had the same pudgy cheeks like any baby but she also had the same blue eyes as her father.
"You should both get some rest." The Nurse suggested. "I'll take her to the baby ward."
Anri was a little hesitant but eventually relented.
"You should get some sleep." Mikado told her.
"Okay." She gave him a weak smile.
"Let's get you some breakfast in the mean time." Kadota said putting his arm around him.
Anri tried to get some sleep while the others went to get something to eat at the hospital cafeteria.
"I want one." Erika told Walker.
"Uh, what?!" Was Walker's scared response.
None of them noticed Shinra slink away not even Celty. Shinra went to the baby ward and quickly found the room where the baby was. Right past a large window was the little new born sleeping in a baby basket. No one seemed to be around.
"Oh, you came to see the baby too." Miriam asked him.
"Huh? What?" Shinra blurted out surprised to find someone there all of a sudden.
"She's sure a looker." Isaac said happily. "She's going to be a heart breaker when she grows up."
Shinra didn't understand but their presence alone but him at ease, as if they brought hope with them.
That's the thing about hope sometimes having that snatched away can make a loose worst.
Shinra felt a a sharp pain in his neck, his hand felt his neck and found a small dart in it. Taking it out he started to feel woozy and and stumbled onto the glass. That's when he saw them, six men dressed in black with matching masks and they were holding dart guns that had already been fire at the unusual pair. They didn't seem to react at it at first, they just pulled out the dart like they were nothing. Shinra was sure he was seeing something wrong when he saw whatever drug was in the dart seep out of their neck before the small wounds closed up. His vision began to get blurry but he was sure of what he saw. Shinra saw one of the soldier enter the room and grab the baby taking her way. Seeing that both Isaac and Miriam tried to fight them only both to get hit with the butts of the guns. That was when Shinra saw something even stranger, Isaac got a broken nose and Miriam had a nasty bruise on her face but it didn't stay that way. Whatever wound or blood was spilt seemed to crawl back into them and the wounds healed as if nothing. They didn't seem to even notice it too being so angry at the soldiers, the soldiers did notice it and seemed interested. Finally they took out taser and used them to successfully knock out the pair. Shinra tried as hard as he could to do anything but he suddenly felt sleepy. As his eyes closed and his head hit the floor he saw the soldier carry away the pair and the baby. For a an instant as the baby cried out Shinra swore her blue eyes flashed red.
