The day of the wedding was pure insanity. Draco and Harry received the cloak and dagger treatment with a hefty dose of Polyjuice before guests began arriving. Both men had gotten the hair from a local ginger Ladd in town and were to introduce themselves as Weasley cousins Barny and Bryan.
They were roped into helping seat the guests as they arrived and maintaining general order. The whole affair put Draco on edge. There were far too many people that he was not familiar with and he could not publicly display his wand. He did, however, take silent pleasure in surveying Granger. She flitted through the crowd seamlessly and beautifully as if she were dancing instead of walking.
He had to shake himself out of a daze more than once when he found himself listening to her conversations as he showed guests to their seats. His progress was halted when he noticed Granger speaking enthusiastically to a familiar tall figure. She appeared very flustered as 'Barny' walked Victor Krum to his seat. This bothered Draco more than he cared to admit, but he noticed Weasley didn't look too happy about the newcomer either so he didn't feel as bad.
The ceremony began shortly after Krum was seated and the odd crew of 'Weasley's' found their seats. Draco was pleased to discover that his seat was right next to Hermione and not, as he thought, Aunt Muriel. He was unsure if the seating was intentional to keep an eye on him, but he wasn't complaining; even with Potter sitting on his other side like a guard dog.
The actual 'I do's' took little to no time at all before the reception was launched into full swing. He followed Weasley, 'Barny', and Granger to a table in the back that was occupied by Luna Lovegood. He had never held an actual conversation with the girl but knew she had a reputation for being rather odd.
Weasley and Potter shared a quick word with Lovegood before sitting. Draco stepped slightly ahead of Granger and pulled out the chair for her to sit. She looked at him curiously before mumbling a quick 'thank you' and sitting down in the offered chair. Draco sat to her other side and was a little closer to Lovegood than he liked.
"Odd seeing you here, Malfoy," she quipped while sipping her drink. His hands instantly went to his hair in alarm. "Your disguise is still there, don't worry."
"How...?"
"Wrackspurts avoid your head. You've got too much going on up there." She giggled after glancing at the dumbstruck look on his face. "You also stand too straight to be anyone other than a Malfoy. Slouch more."
His facial expression must have displayed his thoughts too well because the entire table quickly erupted into unabashed guffaws. Once the laughter died down, music could be heard from the band across the tent. Lovegood swayed in time to the music before getting up and dancing by herself.
"You get used to her," Ron said smiling. He began swaying to the tune as well before Victor Krum took Lovegood's vacant seat.
"Who is that man in yellow?" he said scowling.
Draco tuned out the conversation as he watched Hermione react to the Quidditch star. She grew slightly pink around the cheeks and had a curious bashful air about her. This didn't sit well with Draco. He began sizing the man up as competition. A rival. He was so focused on his own thoughts that when Ron pulled Hermione up to dance he had to physically stop himself from reaching out to her.
"Ah, are they together now?" asked Krum.
"Er - sort of," said Harry.
Draco did not like that response one bit. It was enough to get rid of the Bulgarian but did little to ease his worries. He looked towards where Granger and Weasley were dancing and sighed. If he were a better man he would leave her alone and not try, but Draco Malfoy was not a better man. He would battle Ronald Weasley for Hermione Granger's heart and deal with the consequences later.
He wasn't sure when Potter and Krum wandered off, but when Draco finally turned back to face the table he realized that he was alone. He sipped a bit of mystery punch while surveying the festivities around him. Almost everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves well enough, but Draco couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. He scratched his hidden mark anxiously and began to take stock of heads around the canopy.
He couldn't quite explain it, but there was a sudden urgency for him to locate Potter. Draco downed the rest of his punch and stood up, startling an older wizard nursing a drink at the next table. He marched to the edge of the dance floor and searched for a familiar face. He spotted Weasley at the refreshment bar and made a beeline towards him.
"Psst. Weasley!" An older cousin of Fleur's eyed 'Bryan' suspiciously from her stool at the bar. "I mean uh...Ron!" Weasley turned towards him slowly while pouring Butterbeer.
"Hmm? Yes...Mal...Bryan?" He leaned closer to whisper and avoid the watchful veela's gaze.
"Something feels off. Where are Potter and Granger?" Weasley set down the Butterbeer and turned to face him fully.
"Off how?"
"I dunno...off-off? I'm getting this eery feeling that something is about to happen." He looked around wildly as if to find something hidden in the shadows. Weasley copied the Slytherin's search until freezing and motioning for Draco to turn around.
A bright Patronus in the form of a lynx delicately landed in the centre of the dance floor. Then its mouth opened wide and spoke in the loud, deep, slow voice of Kingsley Shacklebolt.
"The Ministry has fallen. Scrimgeour is dead. They are coming."The entire party stopped and was silent for a beat before someone screamed in the distance.
"Fuck," Draco breathed while searching the now frantic crowd of witches and wizards. Weasley leapt into action by whipping out his wand and grabbing Draco's wrist.
They were propelled into the throng of panicking guests as they tried to find Granger and Potter. Guests began disapperating all around them while protection spells could be heard from all sides of the madness.
"Ron! Ron!" Hermione could just barely be heard over the chaos. Ron was surging through the crowd with Draco being half dragged behind him before they were enveloped in darkness.
