His blue eyes sparkled with confusion and amusement, "Who is Jim?" He quirked one of his eyebrows at her, something Jim often did when she said something silly.
But on second glance she knew he was not Jim. For one thing, Jim had never been on a merchant ship before and this boy was definitely the child she'd danced with. For another, and she nearly blushed thinking about it, he didn't have Jim's strong physique- he was more slender.
"Never mind, you just look like someone I know," she told him with a shrug. "But I never did know your name, what is it?" She was a little curious as to who used to be her favourite person in the world.
"My name is Jamie, at your service Milady," he told her with a bow.
"Get me out of this cage then."
He laughed awkwardly, "Anything, but that."
"I thought so," she sighed out. "What are you doing on a pirate ship anyway?"
"Looking for treasure of course," he told her with a cheeky grin, which again reminded her of Jim.
"What need would you have for treasure?" Only people with money got on merchant ships after all.
"My dad died last year, the money went with him," he told her as though discussing the weather.
"Oh," she breathed out, "I'm sorry."
"Don't be, it's not like I really knew him anyway," he shrugged indifferently.
"I don't understand…?"
"Do you want the tragic life story?" He gave her a wry smile.
She gave one back. "Its not like I'm going anywhere," she glanced around the damp cell.
So he dragged a stool over to the bars of her imprisonment and got comfortable, while Felicity found a dry spot on the floor to sit. "I didn't know my father until I was about… ten?" he asked himself, working out the numbers in his head. "Yeah, I was ten."
"And why didn't you know him?" She shuffled closer to him like a child enrapt in a fairytale.
"Basically," he started awkwardly, "my mother was a whore and he was the guy to get her pregnant. But of course, he didn't know that at the time and left. She died in childbirth, and I was left in her friend's care."
He stopped and let that all sink in. "So, how did he come to know about you ten years later and find you?"
"He didn't know about me and come to find me. He travelled back out, came looking for a quick one," she gave him a sour look but he just shrugged it off. "The whore that took me told him that he had a son, meaning me, and the oh-so-noble man he was took me in."
She didn't say anything so he continued. "He was rich and travelled a lot, so I went with him. He gambled a lot so I was left to my own devices on the ships so I thought I'd dance with all the pretty girls… turned out there was only one that I found really beautiful." He told her with a warm smile, one that she might have returned under different circumstances and found charming.
"Stop trying to win me over, I already don't like you for keeping me in a cell."
"Ha!" He grinned triumphantly, "You didn't say you hated me!"
She didn't look amused as she rose to her feet and leant against one of the walls with her arms crossed.
He turned serious again, "Felicity, if I could get you out of here, I would." He told her gently.
"Keys are over there," she nodded towards them and to the lock on her cell, "it doesn't take a genius to turn a key in a lock, you're crewmates up there are proof enough of that."
He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, something Jim was also accustomed to doing when he was at a loss of what to do. Why did every move he made make her think of Jim? Probably because she missed him, she thought to herself with a silent sigh. Was he looking for her? Did the crew even realise she was gone?
"When my dad died he had a lot of debt," he said, bringing her back from her thoughts. "If I don't pay that debt off, I'm a dead man walking. I need you Felicity." He pleaded with her to understand.
Felicity wasn't in the mood for understanding. If that were her she wouldn't be locking innocent people in a damp cell, preparing to cut them open with a blade so their blood to open a goddamn treasure chest, and then most likely cast them aside when finished.
"And I need a pee," she tossed a glance over to the bucket in the corner, "but it is not gonna happen."
"They must have taken her!" Jim argued with the Captain and Doctor Doppler.
"Now Jim we don't know that for certain, no one saw the pirates take her," Delbert tried to reassure him.
"And no one's seen her since the fight when the pirates suddenly fell back and retreated for no reason," Jim retorted run his hands through his hair in frustration.
"You have a point Mr Hawkins; I believe the attack was meant to be a diversion so they could take Miss Demand, after all- she's the one with the power to open the portal to the treasure."
"So what are we going to do?" Jim demanded.
"Stay on course and carry on."
"What?!" Disbelief and anger was marred across Jim's handsome face and whirled around to look at the Captain.
She was studying the map across her desk intently, seeing that they were about one thousand three hundred and sixty-seven miles away from their destination and with the speed they were going at they should make it within twenty-four hours.
"The pirates are going in the same direction as we are, they've most likely headed to the left," she pointed towards the map and with her finger trailed around the planet they'd just past, "to avoid us. Meaning they'll get to the treasure after us, we'll be waiting for them."
Delbert nodded along to his wife's plan, a proud smile upon his face.
"And how long will that take?" Jim crossed his arms over his chest and glared at the pair.
"Well, we'll take about twenty-four hours and it'll take the pirates at least and day and a half to travel all the way around this planet-"
"So she'll be with those filthy pirates for at least two days! Do you have any idea what they could do to her? They might not be able to kill her because they need her, but there are worse fates than death!" He was breathing heavily from his outburst and was practically shaking with rage at the thought of what those dirty pirates could be doing to her.
Delbert placed a comforting hand on Jim's shoulder, "She'll be alright Jim; she's a strong and smart girl, she won't let those foul mouthed fools come within five feet of her."
Jim shrugged Doctor Doppler's hand off and stalked out of the stateroom, slamming the door on his way out.
He was greeted with Silver's sympathetic stare. "I 'eard everything," he explained. "She'll be alright lad," he tried to reassure the young man, and also himself. Morph made a noise of sorrow and whizzed around Jim's head a few times before snuggling into his shoulder.
"I'm taking one of the longboats and going after her," Jim suddenly told him, rushing down the stairs taking two at a time; Morph flew off his body and bounced into Silver.
"What?" Silver followed.
"If I go now I'll be able to catch up to them," Jim said more to himself than Silver, pulling the lever to open the hatch below the dangling longboats.
"Aye, and what are yer plannin' to do once you catch up to 'em?" Silver voiced was filled with disbelief and a hint of sarcasm. Jim couldn't possibly fight of a whole crew of pirates.
"Sneak on board, get Felicity and sneak off," Jim said distractedly, untying one of the ropes that kept the front of the longboat up. He moved towards the back and started to undo the rope on that end too.
"And yer think it'll be as easy as that, huh?"
Jim turned to look back at Silver, holding onto the now untied rope, if he let go of it, it would slip through the metal hook on the longboat and he would be on his way to Felicity.
Silver saw Jim study him and he felt relieved that the boy was going to take a step back and see reason; his idea was preposterous after all.
"I always did have high expectations." Jim let go of the only thing anchoring the longboat to the ship and Silver watched it fall out of the hatch and shoot off to the left, following the pirates and Felicity.
He let a wry smile slip onto his face despite to absurdity, and turned back to the lever, pushing the button next to it to stop the hatch from automatically closing after an hour; who knew how long Jim would take to retrieve Felicity. "Besotted lad," he mumbled, stroking Morph's pink head, as he made his way up the stairwell back to the deck.
Jim to the rescue! What do you think of Jamie? Will Jim be able to save Felicity?
