So, it's been a long time coming, but this story is finally at an end. Hope you enjoy it.
Metropolis
Afternoon
"Goodness got away. Satellites picked her up going through some kind of portal," Diggle explained as he and Lyla met the group on the rooftop as Argus technicities dismantled the machine.
"Goodness will not give up, neither will Darkseid," Diana warned them grimly. "This will only make them fight harder to conquer Man's World when they return. And they will return."
"And when they do, we'll be ready," Kal said firmly, speaking for all of them.
Diana frowned, knowing they did not truly grasp the depths of Darkseid's power. Before she could voice her concerns, one of the technicians walked over, holding something in his hands.
"Director Michaels, we've found the power source for the machine. But it's unlike anything I've ever seen," the technician said bewildered as he opened his palm.
In his hand was a small, yellow stone, half the size of a regular golf ball. It seemed artificial almost in that it looked unnaturally smooth. It seemed almost other worldly. Knowing Goodness, it just might be.
Diana froze as she stared at the stone. She was quite certain that none of her companions had any idea what they had in their hands. It was best that Diana kept it that way.
She may trust her immediate companions, but it was best to keep that stone as far from Man's World as possible.
"From the energy scanner, this thing could power a Helicarrier alone for three months," the technician said and Lyla raised an eyebrow.
"Perhaps I should take it back to Themyscira," Diana suggested and everyone stopped to look at her. "Remove the temptation from Man's World. And if Goodness should come for it, we Amazons are best equipped to protect it."
Lyla doesn't make a move as Diana takes the stone from the technician. Whether because she agreed or because she just didn't want to argue, Diana didn't know. As long as it got the stone away, Diana found she didn't care.
"It was an honor to fight alongside you," Diana said as her eyes traveled from Kal, Barry, Bruce, Sara, Ray, and finally Oliver. "Perhaps my mother was wrong. Perhaps one day we will rejoin Man's World."
"If that day ever comes, we look forward to it," Barry said, holding out his hand to Diana.
"As do I," Diana said, shaking Barry's hand before looking at them all. "Farwell. I hope, should we meet again, the circumstances are not as dire."
Diana then flew off, disappearing into the sky as they all watched.
"Well, there she goes. Off to her island of warrior women," Diggle deadpanned.
"You have an alien, a Meta, and a woman who literally rose from the dead in front of you, but Diana freaks you out?" Sara asked amused and Diggle nodded, conceding her point.
"She's right though, Goodness will be back," Bruce noted. "We got lucky this time, but what if next time, we're not?"
"We fight. Together," Oliver said firmly.
"And if we lose?" Ray asked uncertainly.
"Then we'll do that together to," Oliver said simply.
"You're a stubborn fool Oliver. I like that about you," Bruce said and Oliver smirked.
"Guess that's because you're the same way," Oliver quipped.
"So…what do we do now?" Ray asked.
"I think I've got an idea," Barry said as they all looked over at him.
Metropolis, several days later
Afternoon
"So, what is this place?" Sara asked as he looked around at the building as Barry and Bruce led her and Oliver inside.
When Barry had first brought Bruce here, it had resembled a rundown warehouse. Now, after several days of work with some 'help' from Argus and Wayne Enterprises, it resembled a merge between Star Labs and Oliver's first lair, second year of course.
"It was a Star Labs facility before the Accelerator exploded and Star Labs lost a lot of credibility. Wells, or I guess Thawne, shut it down as a cost saving measure. I figured we could use it as a base for the team," Barry said.
"So we're a team now?" Sara asked.
"Barry's got the right idea," Oliver said, walking over to Barry's side. "We got lucky this time. But like Diana said, Goodness will be back, with this Darkseid. We can't stop them on our own. But together, we might just stand a chance."
"Well, Goodness killed my dad. I'm in," Sara grimly and they all looked to Bruce.
"I work better alone. But if you need my help-and you will need my help-I'll be there," Bruce promised.
"I understand. Thank you for all your help," Oliver said, holding his hand out to Bruce, who shook it.
"Goodbye old friend," Bruce said they stopped hands and they watched as Bruce walked out.
"So, let's go to work," Oliver told Barry and Sara as they began walking down the hall.
"We've got our work cut out for us," Sara pointed out.
"Hey, we've got some good people in our corner," Barry said defensively.
"But they're not a team yet. Let's whip them into shape," Oliver said as he opened the door to the training area.
As the three of them walked in, Oliver considered the candidates.
Thea and Laurel. His sister and his best friend. Thea was good, he could admit, but she was too confident. She thought because she trained under Malcolm, she was better than she was. He'd failed to get that out of her. Perhaps Sara could succeed where he failed. Laurel was decent, but she still had a lot to learn. He'd leave that up to Sara as well.
Cisco Ramon and Caitlin Snow. Cisco was here because he felt he needed to redeem himself for his part in Goodness' plan. Oliver could understand that, but it couldn't be his only reason for being here. Eventually, Cisco would have to decide if he really belonged here. Caitlin was here to learn control over her powers, over her fear of becoming like her Earth-2 doppelganger. Barry would have to help her through that.
John Diggle, his former brother in arms. His failure of being unable to stop the missile from heading to Metropolis had made Diggle decide he could do more good as Spartan than as a spy. John was a good soldier, but that didn't mean that he would be a good hero.
Kal. Superman as the media and Argus called him. An alien with the power of a god who chose to protect humanity. Oliver still didn't completely trust him. He didn't trust a man without a dark side, call him paranoid or whatever. His five years of hell had taught him that people rarely showed you their true face.
Finally, there was Ray Palmer. A friend, an ally. But he didn't take this life as seriously as he should. Well, Oliver would be sure to change that.
"Let's get started," Oliver told the room.
Apokolips
Same time
"It appears that Earth is not the weak planet we had hoped," Goodness said softly as she bowed. "The humans are stronger than we had believed. A minor setback."
"Minor?" The being known as Steppenwolf scoffed as she glared at him. "You could not even take one planet of primitive life. You are not worthy of being our lord's second."
"Perhaps you wish to say that again?" Goodness sneered as she got to her feet, stalking over to him.
"Silence."
The two froze at the deep, low voice. They bowed to the being sitting on the throne.
"Forgive me, Lord Darkseid," Goodness said humbly.
"It is obvious taking Earth is beyond your capabilities," Darkseid said and Goodness seethed as Darkseid got to his feet. "I'll do it myself."
