Ch. 9

Six months later...

Obsidian dodged a right hook from Tungsten, grabbed the teen's wrist and pulled. He was knocked off balance enough for Obsidian to drive his knee into Tungsten's solar plexus, knocking the wind out of him and driving him to his hands and knees. He heard cheers from the spectators.

As he reached down to help him up, Tungsten hooked his knee and stood up, bringing him to the packed dirt floor. When Obsidian opened his eyes, Tungsten stood over him with a smirk.

"Nice try, but you still show too much mercy to your opponent." Obsidian groaned as he sat up and wiped the perspiration off his face. He stood and tried to wipe the dust out of his hair as he left the sparring ring.

"Hey Oaf!" He stopped and turned as he reached his squad's room. He saw Pyrite walking to catch up with him.

"What's up Ice Queen?" He asked the auburn-haired girl. She pulled out her pokeballs, her eyes burning with the heat of Battle already.

"Battle me, we both need the training." Obsidian sighed, exhausted.

"At least let me get my shirt on ok?" Pyrite granted his request and he grabbed his shirt and his his pokeballs. He exited the building and released his Absol as Pyrite released her Charmamder.

"Revenant, make it quick."

"Drake! Light him up!"

The orange lizard stared down the larger canine as they growled at each other and awaited their commands.

"Revenant Slash!"

"Drake, Incinerate!"

The white canine dodged the jets of fire and raked his claws against his opponent, earning a cry of distress. Obsidian's face became more intense.

"Dragon Claw, Drake!" The fire lizard slashed his purple-glowing claws along Ruin's flank, it's body glowing. Obsidian realized what happened. The Charmander had evolved mid-attack and, with it's increased strength dealt plenty of damage to Revenant. Obsidian grit his teeth as the Disaster Pokemon fell and couldn't stand. He returned the defeated pokemon to it's ball to rest.

"Round One, you. Alright, go Seraph!" He released his Charmeleon, a female. She stared down her male counterpart and snarled, earning a growl in response.

"Seraph, Ancientpower!" Pyrite quickly countered.

"Drake, cut the boulders with Dragon Claw then hit her with Dragon Rage!" The male lizard dodged and slashed the majority of the rocks but was still buffeted by a few. He then launched purple flames at the female, who promptly avoided and launched another barrage at him. He went down hard as he took the full brunt of the super effective hit.

"Round Two goes to you." Pyrite said as she returned her partner and released her next teammate, a Swablu.

"Time to kick ass Cloud!" The little bird chirped in response and rushed the female lizard, it's beak glowing as it started spinning. The Charmeleon attempted to dodge but she was still grazed by the attack. Obsidian grit his teeth.

"Hang in there Seraph, use Fire Fang!" His pokemon lunged, fire coating her mouth as she bit down hard on the fluffy bird. It unleashed a shriek of pain which damaged Seraph, Echoed Voice. They both fell over exhausted.

"Tie, that means we're on to our third pokemon apiece." Obsidian observed as he released a fluffy brown ball of fur. "Lets go! Spectre!"

"Do it Sunset!" Pyrite released her pokemon, a white caterpillar with yellow spikes around its red face, a Larvesta.

"Sunset, use Bug Bite!" The caterpillar nodded and swiftly crawled towards the fluffy feline.

"Keep it at bay with Shadow Ball Spectre!" His pokemon nodded and started flinging dark blobs at the bug, hitting it repeatedly but not slowing it down. "Damn it!"

The bug slammed into Spectre and latched on, damaging her heavily. Pyrite nodded in satisfaction.

"Good girl!" She cheered as Sunset held on to the writhing Eevee. As she fainted, Obsidian returned her.

"Round Four goes to you. Wraith! You're up!" He sent out a black and red dog with bone charms. It growled at Sunset and purple gas filtered from its bared fangs.

"You think he'll win sis?" Purple asked as he and Scarlett along with their teams watched Whiskey Platoon train in their private compound secluded in a small valley in the mountains, Teams Luna and Sol were patrolling the area.

They had been doing so well that Col. Hiru had considered advancing their training but one thing stopped him and neither of his children knew what it was. When prompted on their video chats, he just shook his head and he gained the thousand-yard stare. He had refused to meet the face-to-face since the raid on the convoy and they brought him the boy, who had told them his name was Bryant. Scarlett shrugged.

"Same main types, it could go either way but he's already tired so she has the advantage." She observed distantly. Purple chuckled.

"You still have that crush on him don't you?" He asked. Her glare said it all. He smirked at her. "Well you might have to fight her for him." He teased and dodged the his female twin.

"I DO NOT have a crush on him!" Her blush belied her statement and Purple grinned at her.

"Oh really? Then why-" he was interrupted by their coms going off.

"Scarlett, Purple. How are they doing?" Their father asked.

"They are doing very well sir, the valley is quiet and there have been no Resistance drones for the last few days." Scarlett told him.

"Very well, you'll be glad to know that the boy you recovered is well and will be joining your team, Purple. He unfortunately cannot return to society because of his...condition. I expect you both to train and help him settle in understood?" His children nodded more of a reflex than anything.

"Yessir!" Was the reply.

"Good, be safe you two..." A brief pause and then: "I love you."

"Love you too Dad." Scarlett told him stiffly while Purple's was relaxed.

"Love you back Pops." Then he hung up. Purple and Scarlett turned to watch the rest of the battle. Obsidian's Houndour won against Pyrite's Larvesta and Sneasel but lost to her Deino, as did his Vulpix, and two Poochyenas but his Deino was able to prevail, winning him the match. Purple looked at his sister to say something but she stomped his foot, earning a laugh from the rest of their group.

Col. Hiru took the com unit off his ear and turned to his desk. His monitor showed a pop-up with a new video call being requested. There was no number, name or any discerning feature but he knew who it was. He turned on the camera and answered. The black-haired man with red eyes faced him in an office similar to his but darker. Hiru looked at the man in front of him and spoke one word.

"Red."

"Yes, I take it the training is going well?" He asked in a business-like manner. Hiru nodded stonily.

"Yes they are, as your drones saw they're away from the conflict. Nestled in the heart of the Unova region's mountain chain." Red merely smiled lightly.

"That's good, now Blue and I want to know about the health of our children." Hiru nodded.

"Scarlett resembles her mother greatly and Purple favors you. Now I've been thinking of advancing all their training, but I wanted your approval first. And Bianca and Cheren's son is finally safe, he'll join the others within the week." That earned a sincere smile from Red who was unused the action after so many years.

"Great, thank for your help. Rin, it will be repaid when we make our move on Unova, I have held my promise of protecting your wife and you as you have held yours of training the Pokedex Holders' children." Hiru nodded and relief flooded his face.

"Thank you sir. Arceus bless you for this." Red nodded and hung up.

Hiru turned in his chair, walked to the couch in his office and fell into the deepest sleep he had since he sent his wife away to live with her family in Kalos, almost twenty years ago.
