EDIT NOTE: I have a poll up on my profile if everyone wouldn't mind checking it out. Thanks!
I would like to thank star-eye for this suggestion. I had fun with it. Enjoy!

Heart Day
"I wanted the red one."
Jai snatched the thick paper back from Irey's hand. His sister pouted. "You have all the red. Share,"
He shook his head as he firmly put one hand securely over the large heart shaped paper and scribbled with the other. "No. I don't want the pink." Irey glared at her brother for a moment before resuming her current artwork on a "pink" heart.
For about the past hour, the twins had been closed in their room, decorating pre-cut out hearts that Dinah had bought for them when she took them out for the afternoon to give Artemis a little break and care for just baby Diana. The purpose of the hearts, a box of dark chocolate (that the kids were warned not to get into), and a bouquet of red and pink roses with an attached balloon sitting carefully hidden on the top of the dresser with the chocolate was for a certain forgetful speedster to give his wife. Of course the kids wanted to help pick out a few things as well such as the little stuffed brown bear holding a heart and a hero decorated box of gummy candy. All this was to be kept a secret from Artemis and given to Wally since he probably didn't remember about "heart day" again as the children dubbed it. The four year olds enjoyed the short versions of all the times that daddy forgot about the special day meant for showing how much you care about those you love. They did fairly well keeping quiet while decorating the hearts ahead of time to surprise daddy when he finally got home. Mommy didn't come to check up on them once to see what they were doing and ruin the big secret.
Jai's grip on his crayon tightened when Irey's lines on her heart extended to his. He snatched up his paper and held it out in front of him. "Irey! You're drawing on mine too!"
"Sorry," she replied in a slightly agitated tone before her eyes went wide. She put a finger in front of her mouth and spoke softly, "Shh. We need to be quiet. Remember, Jai? We can't let mommy know."
Jai continued to huff, but sat back down, moving a little bit away from his sister. After a while, Irey perked up when she heard the sound of the front door opening. "Daddy's home!"
Wally put the keys on the counter and took off his coat before he ran his hand through his hair as he stared at the calendar hanging on the wall in the kitchen. He groaned, putting his hand on his forehead. Valentine's Day. He forgot. Again. He was a terrible husband for forgetting that day continuously. It wasn't until he heard two pieces of bad news for him mentioned on the radio while on the way home from work. The first, a Happy Valentine's Day, and the second about a cold front soon to hit and bring high winds and snow. Now what was he supposed to do?
"Long day at work?" Wally nearly jumped at the sound of her voice. Artemis walked in, lightly bouncing Diana in her arms. He nodded as he stood inconspicuously in front of the calendar, hoping that she wouldn't notice the date and the fact that he was an airhead for forgetting. And he promised himself to get her something really nice this year. His wife approached him, handing off the baby as he gave her a quick peck on the cheek. "Take her for a minute,"
"Sure," He shifted his baby girl in a more comfortable position in his arms. "Finally got a big report resolved," Wally vaguely explained. He was relieved that week long case at the office was done, but that was not what was on his mind. He needed to figure out what to do for the night. It was too late to run back out right now.
"That's good." Artemis moved over to the counter and began fixing a bottle. "Oh, by the way, Dinah took Irey and Jai out for a while earlier. She went ahead and picked up some groceries too that we needed. It was nice and quiet without them here." A small smile formed on her face as she twisted the bottle closed. "They've been doing whatever in their room. At least they're not fighting."
"When are they not?" Wally joked, but on the inside, he was in a panic. Hopefully Dinah hadn't said anything to her about the date. His wife had put up enough about him forgetting the previous years and he wondered when she would eventually break. Artemis came back over to retrieve Diana while shaking the bottle.
"Was there something going on today? It seems like there should be." Wally was so glad that her attention was on the baby when she asked that, otherwise she would have definitely noticed his panicked expression.
"Uh, no. Don't think so," He choked out.
"Hmm," Artemis shrugged as Diana began sucking the bottle. "You're in charge of dinner though."
Artemis walked into the master bedroom, leaving Wally a chance to run a hand through his hair, fisting it in nervousness. He began to mumble to himself, "What am I supposed to do?! I'd be too late to try to get some reservations somewhere, especially with that blizzard coming through. Then I wouldn't have anyone to watch the kids…" He groaned while rubbing his temples in frustration. "I am such an idiot for forgetting… again."
Wally barely noticed something tugging at his leg. Jai and Irey grinned up at him. "Dinah knew you would forget." Jai replied quietly, his grin widening.
Irey grabbed her father's hand to pull him towards their bedroom. "Come on daddy, we have something for you." Wally narrowed his eyes in confusion as he followed his children. He stood in surprise as Jai gestured to the various items on the other side of the room.
"Dinah said we had to help you remember Valtentimes Day."
"Valentine's Day," Jai corrected.
Irey stuck her tongue out before holding up a couple of her decorated hearts. ""And we drew on these hearts to help too."
Wally could only smile at her display. He continued to move over to the other bags, surprise still evident on his face. Artemis' surrogate aunt really outdid herself. A folded note with his name on the front sat in front of the flowers. He opened it.
As a tradition of forgetting, thought you may need some help this year. Artemis deserves the best. These are only basic 'items' to aid. You need to really do things to show how much you care about her. She might enjoy a completely clean house for example. P.S. All this does not come free.
Wally let out a low whistle before he tucked the included receipt and note in his pocket. He would of course have to pay Dinah back later. But first was the matter at hand. He wasn't entirely sure what to do yet. Wally crouched down to his children's level. "Any other ideas you want to give daddy to help him out?" Irey and Jai looked at each other before turning back to him and nodding.
Wally zipped around, taping the kids' decorated hearts all over the wall near the kitchen table while the twins helped set the table for dinner. Soon, he returned with the flowers and balloon for the centerpiece along with a few candles. The box of dark chocolates lay on the counter along with the bear and box of gummies. The smell of spaghetti and buttered toast filled the kitchen. It was the easiest and quickest thing he could come up with. Ordering Irey and Jai to get Artemis, he put the food on the table.
"Are you surprised mommy?!"
Wally whipped his head around and gave a grin. "Dinner's ready." He gestured his open arms to behind him. Artemis only looked mildly surprised as she took in the added decorations. She turned to the kids. "Wow, you did a good job helping."
"And after dinner, you'll have to eat your candy." Jai added. The kids eagerly took their seats at the table. Wally offered to take Diana out of her arms. During the exchange, Artemis' smile easily turned into a smirk.
"They were your only help?" She asked, looking directly at her husband. "For four year olds, they are pretty bright to come up with all this on their own since I would be very surprised it you managed to remember."
Wally easily caught on and slumped his shoulders. "You knew, didn't you." That came out more like a statement.
"It's hard not to overhear when the baby monitor on Diana's room is right next to their bedroom wall. I'm surprised Irey could keep quiet about it for so long considering how she is with secrets." Artemis lightly laughed as she playfully added, "I don't know if I should be thanking you or Dinah for getting all this."
"Hey, I do have other plans for later…"
Artemis gave Wally a quick peck on the lips. "Thank you," She whispered.
They lingered close together for a moment before she turned and hurried over to the table before sauce was spilled everywhere by two very hungry kids anxious for dinner. Wally smiled before attempting to assist with one hand while his other arm held Diana. His mind began working throughout dinner with plans to start the next day with a deep cleaning of the kitchen from top to bottom.
Happy Singles Awareness Day! Of course I write this on the day when I never have plans except for babysitting and homework. Yup, shows you how exciting my life is. :P
