Author's Note: This is the continuing story to my other Poltergeist the Legacy story 'Rebuilding'. I decided to just add it on to the first story. Must easier than asking you to go read another story entirely. I hope to enjoy and please leave a review. All constructive feedback is welcome. Thank you!
Rebuilding Book II
Chapter 1
"So, what's the diagnosis, Doc?" Alex asked playfully as she sat up from her prone position on the bed and began to buttoned her blouse.
"Well, you are fit as a fiddle, young lady," Rachel answered as she removed her stethoscope and placed it back into her bag. "It's as if nothing happened. Your body snapped back and it's as if you didn't just give birth 48 hours ago."
"Yeah, well it definitely has been a surreal 48 hours," Alex replied. "And not everything snapped back," She added as she looked down at her more ample breasts.
"That's completely normal, your body producing food for your baby, so you can breastfeed her.
"No, thanks," Alex shook her head a bit as she frowned up at the thought of it, which made Rachel look at her in concern but didn't want to push her about it. Rachel truly understood all that Alex was currently going through. "This was a supernatural birth, maybe that has something to do with my snapback."
"Maybe, but remember I had my own supernatural birth a few years ago and I definitely got a few stretchmarks from it. So, me thinks that yours might have more to do with good genes than something supernatural and I hate you a little for it," Rachel teased and invoked a genuine smile from her younger friend.
"Sorry," Alex said with a slight chuckle.
"You're physically in tip top shape, sweetie," Rachel stated. She took on a more serious tone as she reached out as stroked Alex's soft curls. "How are you feeling mentally and emotionally?" She inquired.
"Completely drained, I don't know," Alex began to answer as she looked over to the beautiful maple bassinet that Derek had gifted her, which currently housed her sleeping newborn. "This past week has turned my whole life upside down, and I keep telling myself, Alex you survived it all. You're alive, still here, and you're stronger for it."
"Well, you are the toughest lady I know," Rachel offered with a kind smile, which Alex returned.
"Thanks, I'm trying my best, but Rachel, I don't know if I can…" Her words were cut short with the soft knocking on the door. "Come in Nick," Alex called out to the man she already knew was on the other side of the door. The door opened a bit and Nick stuck only his head inside.
"Wow, well looks like your psychic gifts are also still intact," Rachel teased.
"Yeah, and also Nick stops by at the top of every hour to check on me and his daughter," Alex replied as she threw her friend a smile.
"Am I being annoying?" He asked with a smirk on his face as he remained standing at the threshold with is eyes locked onto the bassinet.
"No, no more than usual," Alex said jokingly which caused Rachel to laugh and Nick to make a funny face at her. "Well, come on in and see the baby. She hasn't grown since an hour ago, but it is about time for her to want to be fed. So, have at it."
"Thanks," He replied with a wide smile as he entered the room and moved to the bassinet. He reached down and carefully lifted his sleeping daughter into his arms, and stared down at her in complete awe.
"Boy, just two days old and she already has him wrapped around her little pinky," Rachel said with a chuckled as she shook her head a bit and grabbed up her bag. "And speaking of spoiled little girls, I need to head out and pick up Kat, she has a soccer game today."
"Oh, tell her good luck and that I am sorry I will miss it," Alex offered.
"I will, and once I explain to her about the new addition to the family I thing she will forgive you if you let her hold and feed the baby when she comes over."
"It's a deal," Alex agreed.
"All right, I'll check in with you tomorrow, but if you need me for anything just call me anytime, okay?" Rachel offered and Alex silently nodded in agreement. She then stepped to where Nick stood with his daughter in his arms. She looked down as the gorgeous child as she reached out and stroked her soft crown of curls. "Bye precious," She spoke softly as to not rouse the sleeping child. "Later Nick," She then moved to exit, closing the door behind her.
"Later," Nick replied a moment later never lifting his eyes from his daughter's face where he was tracing every inch of it to store to his memory.
"Boy, Rachel had it right, she has you totally whipped."
"Yeah she does," He replied with a nod of his head. "Man, I don't think there is a thing in this world I wouldn't do for her or give to her if she asked me."
"Lucky for you she didn't hear that nor is she old enough to hold you to it," Alex teased and at that moment Emily did awaken with a gentle cry as her serene face contorted into a frown.
"Aw, what's the matter little one, ready to eat again?"
"She has a fresh bottle right there on the dresser, Rachel just brought it up so it should still be warm," Nick moved to the dresser and picked up the bottle which was still warm to the touch. He rubbed the nipple across the baby's lip and she eagerly latched onto it and began taking strong pulls.
"Boy, she always acts like she's starving," Nick commented as he fed Emily who seemed to grow more and more restless as she spat out the bottle. "And she doesn't seem to want this. Are you sure it's fresh?" He asked as he then took the bottle into his mouth and sucked in some of the formula while Alex frowned up a little bit as she watched him.
"Uhm, I don't know how fresh it should be but like I said Rachel just made it for her. Does that taste good?" She asked and he shook his head as is face scrunched up in disgust.
"No, I can see why she doesn't want it," Nick answered. "Maybe you should try to-"
"No," Alex spoke out abruptly as she quickly stood up from the bed and moved to her bathroom.
"Alex, I'm not trying to pressure you," He again tried to reason with her but again she cut him off as she breezed by him from the bathroom and moved to the larger dresser.
"Then, stop asking me to breastfeed her, Nick. This is my body and I don't just want your kid suckling from it. There's nothing wrong with the formula. Maybe she's just not hungry."
"Emily," He replied and she stopped in her action of folding and tucking away some of the baby clothes she had gotten from Rachel.
"What?" She asked as she looked at him curiously.
"Her name is Emily Rose," Nick repeated. "It's not 'her', 'the baby' or 'your daughter'. Can you even say her name, Alex?" He asked her as he stepped closer to where she stood at the dresser. "You've never even held her. Here just hold her," He coaxed as he held out their child to Alex, who averted her eyes as she side stepped him.
"No, I don't want to," She confessed as she held up her hands a bit as if he were trying to give her something filthy. "I didn't ask for any of this, you know?" She tossed at him as tears filled her eyes. Nick faltered a bit as he bowed his head. He still held great shame over what had occurred between He and Alex. And it didn't ease his guilt any even knowing that he had been possessed with no control when it all happened. "And I don't think I can do this, Nick. I'm sorry," She then rushed to the door and left the room. Nick stood gently rocking their daughter as he feared what the future would bring her without her mother's love.
