Chapter 10

It was late... too late to be wondering into haunted fun houses. So when Mai fell asleep in Oliver's arms, they decided to call it a night...

Mai's Dream

Mai was in the normal black void once again, only this time, she didn't feel any strong lingering emotions, so she guessed she wasn't in any danger. When the darkness didn't fade, and lights started raising, Mai could only wait for Gene to show up.

Mai turned in a complete circle, visibly bouncing in anticipation.

She saw a shadow in the distance, and ran towards it, nothing under her feet.

Mai hadn't seen Gene for a week, so as soon as he was in reach, Mai pulled him into a hug.

"Gene!" She yelled as she jumped into his huggable form.

"No need to yell, I'm right here" He teased, his voice void of any emotion. He sounded like Naru... the old Naru. Mai pushed him away and placed her hands on her hips.

"Would it kill you to be nice?" Mai questioned. Poking him in the chest.

"No, I have never heard of anyone dying just by being nice" Gene lectured, as if she was five years old. A sad smile played on Mai's lips.

"You sound just like Naru" Mai whispered, looking down embarrassed.

"Do you miss the old Naru?" Gene asked looking down at her, he saw her blush.

"Yeah, I miss him so much. You must think I'm so stupid. I should be happy. I'm with him and he is so nice to me and..." Mai felt tear roll down her cheek.

"Mai, I don't think your stupid for thinking that, there are many reasons you're stupid, but that's not one" Gene teased, but when Mai didn't react, he carried on. "Can I ask what makes you miss the old Naru?" Gene asked, watching as Mai's blush brightened. She nodded.

"It's hard to say, but when he is around I feel safe. He acts like a jerk but underneath that, he cares. He is kind to me even though he teases me. I truly trust him and... even if he betray me, I would be ok with it" Mai said trying to find the words "Whenever he is near me my heart speeds up slightly and when he is with Masako it hurts. I must sound so stupid" Mai confessed.

"No, it makes sence. What do you feel when you're around him now?" Gene questioned.

"I feel differently. I love him, but the way I love Bon-san and John, not romantically" Mai informed. Gene didn't show much emotion, but his eyes did. Mai couldn't read it though... it was strange for Gene to act like this.

"So that's why you have advoidd him? So you don't have to tell him you don't love him?" Gene raised a brow at her.

"Yeah... I don't want to hurt his feelings. What should I do? Do you think I should wait till he is back to normal?" Mai asked with pleading eyes. She was confused and who could blame her?

"You loved the old Naru?" Gene asked invading her question. Mai looked up at him and saw a hidden emotion in his eye's. It almost looked...Caring?

"Yes" Mai whispered looking back down at her hands as if they were the most interesting thing ever. Gene nodded.

"It's time for you to go" Gene told her. He then faded away leaving Mai all alone in the void.

The darkness stared to fade, and instead of being pulled back into her body, she was at the... Fun Park? Mai searched the immediate area, trying to see anything that would pose a threat to her. When she found none, she looked for the reason behind her visit. There was a small girl, and since she was the only person in colour, and the one in the most detail, Mai guessed she was important. She looked around eight.

"Mummy! Mummy, I'm story!" She cried, her voice breaking as she cried.

The young girl had green eyes, and short black hair, that reached her shoulders. She was dressed in a white kimono, covered in sakara. She reminded Mai of Masako, a little. It was kind of unnerving.

The scene then faded, and it was replaced with steel gates and a brightly coloured sign. Mai guessed she was at the entrance. To the side of her, behind a phone box, there were people. They were men, and were polar opposites. They had similar features, but one was tall and lean. He had scruffy, unruly clothes and hair, tattoos and scars, and Mai could see a pocket knife sticking out of his pocket.

The other man was short and stout, but wore his clothes, as well as his hair, neat. There was no signs of body ink or anything like that.

"I don't give a damn! You have to leave!" The older, shorter man demanded. He held a strong stance, but his eye line faltered. He was easy to read, as even Mai could tell he was scared, which is a big deal if you consider how far away she was.

"My dear brother, like you could stop me anyway" The other man reassured, a smug smirk on his lips.

"T-then! I will call the police!" The older man threatened, secretly cursing his stutter. The taller man's smile dropped, and he pulled the knife from behind his back. It was so fast, Mai only saw the knife in his pocket, and then against the throat of the other man.

"I have no problem killing you too! So if you want to end up like them, go ahead" The man dared, his lips curling into a twisted smile at the mention of 'them'. It was as if the thought of his victims gave him some kind of sick satisfaction.

"You can't do this! It's barbaric!" The shorter man yelled, although it seemed his words fell on death ears.

"Oh yes... I can. And I will, you just watch!" And with that, he pushed his brother to the floor, and walked away.

The men faded, and Mai let out a breath she didn't realise she was holding. She hoped it was time for her to wake, but her hopes were dashed when she saw the young girl again.

She saw still lost as far as Mai could tell, and no one had stopped to help her. There were so few people now, that no one would even hear her if she screamed.

It was darker now, so much so, that if it hadn't been for the fair lights, Mai was sure she would have been submerged in darkness, unable to even see her toes.

The young girl cried, begging for her mother to find her.

A man came running towards her, the same man who threatened his own brother.

Mai felt her heart stop at the same time the man stopped.

He had noticed the girl...

That cruel smile made its way back onto his lips, before he approached the girl. His smile dropped, and instead was replace with a look of fake kindness and concern.

"Are you alone?" He asked. The girl nodded hesitantly.

"I... I can't find my mummy" She cried. The man extended his hand to her, and she took it.

"Come with me" He told her, his voice sounding bitter-sweet. He couldn't hide his excitement.

The girl sadly trusted the man, and let him lead her to the abandoned fun house. It had once part of the fair, but was blocked off because of a murder. It still had wood and police tape across the door and windows.

The man only had to duck and rip some police tape to get in. He led the girl in with him. Once he was sure they were out of sight, he dropped his master performance, and grinned menacingly.

He quickly placed a hand over the girl's mouth and pushed her to the ground. He kept his hand on her mouth to keep her from screaming and rolled her over so she was facing him.

The girl eyes welled with tears, and her body shook. She was so full of fear, that she wasn't able to think straight.

"Oh please don't cry, I promise to be gentle" the man whispered mockingly into her ear. It was as if he was flaunting his love for power over someone else.

The girl was screaming, but with his vase like grip, she couldn't be heard.

He started to rip the clothes off his victim, before pressing himself against her.

She was thrashing about, trying to get free and then kicked the man. The man removed his hand to slap her, completely forgetting it was there to keep her quite. Before he even had a chance to raise it in the air for more force, the girl screamed.

The man couldn't move. He didn't know what was going on. He was scared, but he didn't know why. He was trembling with fear, as it overwhelmed him completely.

He slowly starter to rise from the girl. The girl screamed louder and, as if commanded by the screaming, the man felt pulling on his arms and legs.

The girl stopped screaming for a mere second to breathe, but when she continued, she was louder. The man felt the strain on his limbs, and the pain was unbearable. Her screams penetrated his body, invading him, and hurting him. His screams may have been louder, but in his head, all he heard was the girl.

The girl screamed louder, pure fear making her. The mans body couldn't take it anymore. Mai knew what was to come next, and she closed her eyes. She covered her ears, desperately trying to drown out the screaming.

And then, the screaming stopped, and was replaced with the sound of flesh ripping and blood covered the walls and floors. Mai opened her eyes, against her better judgement...

The sight to greet her was covered in blood. The girl, the walls, the floor, the windows...

Mai saw the mans limbs, were all mangled and torn.

And when Mai heard the sound of something moving on she floor. She moved her head to face it, her already wide eye widened, and she let out a scream. It was so forced, that even she felt like her throat was being ripped out, she still couldn't stop.

Everything started fading... the last thing to disappear was the mans head that had rolled by Mai's feet...

With Oliver

It was about six in the morning when he heard a scream that was all to familiar. He practically jumped out of bed and ran down the hallway. Whilst running he saw that Monk, John and Lin had done the same and they were right behind him. He got to the girls room and opened the door and ran to Mai's side. She was still screaming and Masako and Ayako were trying to wake her up. He placed his hands on her shoulders and was shaking her.

"Mai can you hear me!" Oliver yelled. Ayako no longer able to take it, moved Oliver out the way and shook her more eagerly.

"Mai! Mai! Mai wake up!" She yelled before slapping her hard across the cheek. Mai instantly stopped screaming and her eyes flew open. She shot up and without thinking she clung onto Ayako and wept, not able to get a word out.

As soon as Mai let go of Ayako she felt a warm hand on her cheek. The one that stung with pain. She looked at the owner of the hand and blushed, it was Oliver.

"Ayako, don't you think you hit her a bit too hard?" Oliver asked clearly annoyed at Ayako, but wasn't having a go at her or anything.

"Sorry Mai, but you were worrying us, and your screams were giving me a headache" Ayako told Mai in an attempt to lighten the mood. Oliver looked up and saw something in the mirror. It was a frowning version of himself.

"I have to make a call. I will read your notes about Mai's dream later. See you in a bit Mai" Oliver told her, before walking away. She remembered her conversation with Gene and suddenly looked worried.

"Don't worry Mai, he won't cheat on you" Monk whispered, smirking. Mai went bright red.

"Wh- what are you talking about?" Mai yelled nervously, looking down at her hands. Everyone burst out into random fits of giggles apart from Lin, who was smirking, and Masako, who looked like she was about to kill someone.

With Oliver

He went to his room and locked the door. He turned off the light and lit a candle. He then looked at his reflection in the mirror.

"Yes little bro?" Asked 'Oliver', offering an innocent smile.

"You were right. I'm ready to go back" 'Gene' replied from the mirror.

"Well I'm not ready to go back. I like being you and I love being with Mai. Didn't you want her to be happy, Oliver?" Replied 'Oliver?'

"She was happy, but now she is not! She doesn't love you Gene!" 'Gene?' yelled.

"It didn't feel that way when I kissed her" 'Oliver?' teased, smugly.

"Y- you kissed her?" 'Gene?' asked in disbelieve.

"That's right Naru, and I'm staying with her. You hurt her. When you accused her of being in love with me and she cried for days. You broke her heart and I won't let you do it again" 'Oliver?' told his mirror image and then stormed out after blowing out the candle.

"Gene, don't do this!" 'Gene?' yelled as the door slammed. "Gene..."

'Oliver' left his room, the door slamming caught everyone's attention. Everyone looked up at him, apart from Mai who was no were to be seen.

"What's wrong? Have you started remembering your past?" Ayako asked concerned that he was beating himself up over it.

"Yes, I remembered what a despicable person I was...
