I exhale loudly as I park our TAPS vehicle. The drives for this job are so tedious, but at least I can talk to Raven during them. The Analysis is probably the worst, especially on investigations where there was no activity—pretty obvious. I hop out of the SUV and follow my sister up to the group, but something is different. I spot a young brunette with silver wire-framed glasses and eyebrows that have been way over-plucked standing next to Jay and Grant. What is this?
"Okay, everyone, I would like to introduce you to our newest investigator-in-training, Kris Williams!" Jay introduces.
"Hi, everyone!" She says softly but enthusiastically. "It's really great to be on this investigation! I've wanted to do this for so long!"
"Kris will be taking over the research for our investigations," Grant says with a smile.
I glance over at Raven. She has a flat look on her face—she's not impressed either. I mouth the word "basic" to her and she stifles a laugh.
"Well, Grant, Steve and I are going to go take the tour. The rest of you can start unloading," Jay says, clapping his hands together.
The top three members of the TAPS hierarchy leave the rest of us in the dust. Raven, Dustin and I immediately go over to the vehicles. However, I notice the two remaining members standing in place—Kris and Dave. I'm too far away to hear what they're saying, but Dave holds out his hand and Kris shakes it with a smile. I try my best to keep my eyes fixed on them as I grab cases. I almost drop one, but I'm able to catch it; as I look up, I hear Kris laugh and she puts her hand on Dave's arm. I feel my face grow hot and I quickly look away.
I'm silent as we set up central command, avoiding eye contact with all my fellow team members—even Raven. I think she has an idea of what's up though. We set up the cameras in the proper places and we get the angles approved by Jay. We're almost ready to go.
"Okay… teams…" Jay begins. "Why don't we have Kris and Dave together tonight? You can show her the ropes, Dave."
"Sure, I'd like that!" He says with a smile.
I feel my blood run cold and I hope to God that my face isn't turning red. Then a plan pops into my head. "Um, Jay, I was wondering if I could partner up with Dustin tonight, if that's alright. He and I haven't investigated together in a while."
Jay nods. "Sure. That leaves Steve with Raven. Alright, let's go lights out!"
A smile spreads across Raven's face at the chance of investigating with her boo, but then she makes eye contact with me. She gives me a puzzled look and then her gaze shoots to Dustin. I just grin back at her.
"C'mon, Dustin, let's go!" I say joyfully, taking his hand and leading him into the building. I can feel Dave's eyes on me.
Once I'm out of the sight of the rest of the team, I drop Dustin's hand and I sit down abruptly.
"What was that about..?" Dustin asks, completely confused.
"Nothing. What are you talking about?" I reply defensively.
Dustin eyes me carefully. "Whatever," he murmurs and sits down next to me.
"Let's do some EVP work…" I suggest, desperately wanting the conversation to end.
The awkwardness between Dustin and me lingers as we continue to investigate the rest of the property. He doesn't say anything until it's our turn to take a break at central command.
"Okay, what's going on?" He asks firmly.
"What are you talking about?" I reply in the same defensive tone as earlier.
"Stop playing dumb. You acted all flirty when we were in the group and then it stopped when we were alone. What's the real reason why you wanted to investigate with me?" Dustin crosses his arms.
I let out a heavy sigh. Dustin seems trustworthy. "It's Kris…"
"What about her?"
"She was flirting with Dave…"
"So..?" And then it hits him. "Oh!"
"You can't tell anyone!" I say in a panicky voice.
"I won't. I promise." There's a moment of silence. "But you know that Jay has a no dating rule."
"Oh, please. He isn't as perceptive as he likes to think. He can't even tell what's right under his nose," I scoff.
Dustin's eyes grow wide. "You mean… Raven and Steve?"
"Oh, yes," I exaggerate. "They've become very, very close, if you catch my drift."
"Wow, I was wondering if there was something there. I just didn't think it had progressed that fast." He chuckles. "Well, I wouldn't worried about Kris. I think Dave likes you too."
"Really?"
"Yeah." Dustin flashes an assuring smile. Just then, Jay sounds on the walkie-talkie, signaling the end of the investigation. "C'mon, let's start packing up."
As we regroup, Dave comes into view with Kris—but he doesn't look exactly thrilled. She's talking his ear off about something about genealogy. Wow. I smile as I help Dustin pack up the equipment. We pack into our vehicles and head to hotel.
We get off the elevator and go our separate ways, yearning for sleep. I expect Raven to assault me with questions about the incident with Dustin, but she remains quiet. Maybe she's just too tired?
As I braid my long, dark hair, she finally speaks. "I know what you were doing with Dustin."
"Good," I say, not even trying to deny it. Suddenly, there's a knock at the door. I stand and walk over, opening it to find Dave. "Um, hi."
"Hey, Steve kicked me out. I was wondering if I could stay in here tonight." Dave looks frightened as if he's expecting me to bite his head off.
"Why did he kick you out?" I ask, genuinely intrigued. I didn't know they fought.
"I don't know. He didn't really say."
Raven quickly gets up and comes over. "Um, I'll go talk to him. You can chill here." She turns to look at me, her eyes widening.
Oh my God, I am going to kill her! Before I can protest, she's out the door and down the hall. I give Dave a weak smile. "Um, come on in." I move out of the way and gesture to my room.
"Uh, thanks." He steps in and walks a few steps. He stands awkwardly, most likely waiting for me to speak. He clears his throat. "How was working with Dustin tonight?"
"Great! We had an awesome time!" I say enthusiastically.
"Really?" There is a tinge of hurt in his voice.
"How was working with Kris?" I ask with a smile. I raise an eyebrow.
Dave notices. "Good! You know, we have a lot in common!"
Is that the best he can do? "Bullshit," I finally say.
Dave flinches. "What?"
"Bullshit," I repeat. "I saw your face when she was talking about that stupid genealogy crap. You looked miserable!" I cross my arms over my chest.
Dave's eyes darken. "Well, what was that whole act with Dustin? Holding his hand? Really?" He rolls his eyes.
My lips fold into a thin line. I take a step forward. "Well, at least I don't go around hitting on all the new girls like some douche bag!"
Dave takes a step toward me. "At least I don't get sloshed every time I go to a bar!"
I feel the steam release from my ears. I slap Dave across the face. He freezes, shocked at the act. I'm just as blown away by it. His gaze finally meets mine. There's a moment where time stands still. We then grab each other, our lips crashing together. I put my hands on Dave's face and then wrap my arms around the back of my neck. He grabs my waist and then slides his hands down to my backside, pulling me closer. Dave backs up to the bed and then lays back. I climb on top of him as our mouths open and our tongues meet. The only things I can hear are our lips smacking and our heavy breathing. I break our kiss and my lips move down to neck and his right earlobe. A low groan releases from Dave's throat. My hand scrapes down his chest over his shirt. Dave removes his hands from under my shirt and he goes to unbutton my jeans.
"Wait," I whisper.
"What?" He asks, concerned.
"I'm… I'm not ready."
"Oh..." he murmurs.
"Sorry."
"No, there's no need to be sorry. I should've known."
There's commotion over by the door and Dave and I both look over. Raven opens the door.
"Hey, I just forgot my toothbrush—oh! Uh, sorry! I'll leave you guys alone!" She quickly exits the room.
I look at Dave and we both burst into laughter. I kiss him once more. "I guess you're taking Raven's bed tonight," I giggle.
"I guess so." She smiles brightly.
"Well, um, I'm tired so I'm going to finish getting ready for bed."
"Oh yeah, me too."
I climb off of Dave and he sits up. He walks over to the other double bed and pulls back the covers. I grab my phone and I head to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I have a new text:
I know where you are.
It's from Alex. Shit.
