Hello again :D

Okay ... This was going to be the last chapter ... And if you like then I could leave it here, but I have a feeling that if I did then I would be bombarded with hate mail so it's up to you :P

Disclaimer still applies. I don't own Primeval ... I only own Darren :(

Darren: Hey
Me: What? Don't get all offended. EVERYONE HATES YOU!
Darren: You made me evil. I could have been nice and stayed with Jess and Becker would've had to have dealt with it
Me: ... Ok, I suppose I could have. But being disturbed makes my stories interesting ^.^

Aaaaaaannnnyyyyway this chapter is to two new reviewers: Esmerelda Diana Parker and Cinn AND to one old reviewer Sarcastic-Bones Because your reviews made me so happy ^.^ thank you very much :D and Sarcastic-Bones promised that she wouldn't hit me ^.^

Enjoy this chapter :D

'She's stable' The relief on everyone's faces was tangible, 'she should fully recover in time, she isn't awake yet. That should take a few hours so I suggest you go home and sleep for a while'

'Can I see her?' Becker asked at once. The doctor knew his type, knew that he wouldn't leave no matter what he suggested, unless he said it was for the girls own good; which it wasn't, so he shrugged and pointed in the direction of Miss Parker's room. The others began to leave too, Abby and Connor went to go and get some food from the canteen, Matt and Emily dispersed to go home. Only Lester was left on the chairs. He felt that it wasn't his place to intrude on Becker's time with Jess, even though she was unconscious; the thought of the Captain pouring his sorry little heart out to the pale figure was enough to make Lester squirm. But really, he thought angrily it was about damn time that Becker found something to occupy him other than his dratted guns, and realised that sweet little Jessica Parker was head over heels in love with him.

But Lester didn't want to go home either. Over the years, despite appearances, he had grown very fond of his team. Yes he thought dolefully even Connor. But Jess was closer to him than the others, probably because they were both stranded at the ARC while the others ran around fighting prehistoric creatures so they spent more time around each other. Jess was a bit like a daughter to him, she was just always so happy and bubbly; and it had pained him to see her change over the past week. He was glad that Becker was waking up to just how brilliant and beautiful she was. And yes he realised that she was beautiful. Just because he held nothing but fatherly affection for the young Field Coordinator it didn't make him blind.

Becker sat in the padded chair next to the bed and took Jess's hand; it was warmer than it had been in the helicopter which he took as a good thing. He sat in silence. He had always hated those bits in romantic movies (that he had usually been forced to watch) when the person in love confessed it while the person who is loved is asleep. He didn't see the point. If he wanted to tell Jess something, then he would wait until she was awake so that she would know what he wanted her to. Becker didn't believe in stars and fate and the One. But he did believe in love. He had seen how it changed people, how people reacted when their love was gone, and how close people in love were, in all senses of the word. He had always been scared of it, terrified to be expected to bare his soul to a girl, and her deciding differently. Becker's biggest fear was being let down by a person he trusted completely.

But he knew Jess. He knew that she would never let him down; he knew that no matter what happened between them, there would be no grudges or bad feelings. Jess wasn't capable of bad feelings, and if Jess found someone else … then he would grin and bear it to see her happy.

Over the years, Becker had heard many meanings of love; some believed that it was the person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with, some, that it was a fickle thing that was easily gained but not easily lost, some the other way around, and some, that it was about trusting someone with everything you are.

Becker respected all of these definitions, and saw the truth in them, but he believed that love was doing anything to see the other smile. He believed that when people loved, lives merged together, so that if one was miserable, the other would do whatever it took to see them happy again, loving, sometimes meant letting go, no matter how much it cost, no matter how much you wanted to be with them; if they weren't happy, then your own happiness wasn't worth begging them to stay.

Becker waited in that position for seven hours straight. The nurses took pity on him and brought him meals and cups of coffee, but he ate and drank with one hand only, the other still clinging onto Jess's, he refused to let go, he had to make sure that she was always there, that she wasn't about to leave him.

'She should be awake soon' one of the nurses said comfortingly, patting Becker on the shoulder 'and then you can go home and stop worrying'

'I'm staying until she's well enough to leave herself.' He said stubbornly. The amused look on the nurses face made him feel like a contrary six year old, this woman had children, he could tell.

'As you like' she said, checking Jess's drip and leaving the room. Becker sighed and clasped her hand tighter.

A few hours later, Jess stirred, she turned her head and mumbled something intelligible, a few strands of auborn hair fell across her face and Becker couldn't resist brushing them back. At this, Jess's blue eyes fluttered open; they blinked several times before they focussed. When they did, they filled with tears.

'Becker' she choked, a tear fell and Becker wiped it off her cheek with his thumb, but another came, and another. Becker didn't speak. He just pulled her up oh so gently, so as not to hurt her, and held her to his chest; letting her cry it out, knowing that she needed the comfort and that just being there was enough.

Eventually, Jess regained her composure. She pulled back, somewhat embarrassed and winced; Becker was there in an instant

'You should lie down' it was the first time he'd spoken, and his voice was still beautiful, rich and deep, like her favourite chocolate, Jess sank back into the pillows and stared up at him gratefully

'Thank you' she said, her voice like a wind chime 'I'm sorry, I lost it for a minute there' Becker chuckled, and the sound resonated though her, making her shiver. This is what love is she thought what I had with Darren was based on fear. At the thought of Darren, all the memories of that night bombarded her. Becker saw the horror in her eyes and didn't know what else to do but stroke her hair

'It's over now Jessica' he said softly 'I won't let anyone hurt you again. I'm so sorry that I didn't stop this in the first place'

Jess shook her head, pushing the pain from her mind 'You're here now'

'Yes' he whispered 'I am' he bent closer, so his lips almost brushed her ear

'And I always will be'

Jess drifted off soon after that, a slight smile on her pale face. With her safe, his thoughts turned to Darren, and his fingers itched for a shotgun; or an EMD because that was probably more painful than any bullet. Darren will pay for this, he vowed I am going to hunt him down and make him pay for what he has done to my Jessica.

But how to do it without leaving Jess alone? And if he waited until Jess was fully recovered, then Darren would have had plenty of time to flee the city, or even the country. He thought hard, brow furrowed, then a flash of inspiration made Becker pull out his mobile

'Becker? What happened? Is Jess ok?'

'Connor, calm down, Jess is fine. I need your help'

XXX

Connor brought his laptop as requested.

'I can get his address from the records' he said as his fingers tapped frantically 'but I can't guarantee that there's a CCTV camera near' Becker nodded absently

'The nearest you can get, on every route out of there. If he leaves. I want to know'

Connor raised an eyebrow

'He might already have left' he pointed out 'he has had a days head start to pack up and leave' Becker opened his mouth but Connor interrupted him 'He might be using a false name so there's no point in checking airport attendance'

'Well I can't just sit here and let him get away!' Becker said, careful not to raise his voice enough to wake Jess

'Becker mate there might not be anything you can …'

'Look' at her Connor' Becker's voice was soft again, the scientist glanced at the sleeping figure and licked his lips uncomfortably 'look at her' he did, properly this time; taking in the bruises, the bandages, the scratches and the cuts. Becker noticed a familiar anger in his dark eyes. 'He did this to her' he continued 'he hurt her Connor' Connor met his eyes levelly 'I know mate, but as much as I hate him it just might not be possible' Becker decided that he needed more to convince him, so he threw his trump card, it was a low blow, but he was sure it would work.

'What if it had been Abby?' That was it, all he needed to know that Connor would do what he wanted

'Then I'd kill him' he growled. He sighed and reached for his laptop. 'I'll do what I can Becker'

'Thank you'
