AN: So sorry for the super late update. When it rains it pours. But I finally found some time to write so here is the next installment. This is actually my fourth attempt at this letter. The third attempt is actually completed as well but I like this one better. I may post the other one by itself as an outtake or something. Also, I've been lurking around in the Darcy and Loki section over on the Thor site. I love them and even if you are not interested in that pairing or don't like them I would highly recommend that you all go read They Say Fortune is a Wheel by LuvaGoodMrE. Its a great read.
AN2: I promised by 100th viewer a one shot of their very own and I promise I am working on it. I was half way through when I realized what I had sucked. So back to the drawing board. Also, would anybody be intersted in doing some cover art for this? Just Pm me.
This is not betad so sorry for any errors!
So here is U and it it pretty angsty, its about friendship and unrequited love. Sad day :( I may do a second part. No promises though!
Disclaimer: Well of course I don't own em. But if you ever wanna give em away I promise to make a beautiful mess!
Undone
It began the summer after their freshman year at college. She couldn't even begin to explain how it happened. She just knew that one day it was her, Damon, and Elena. She just knew that they were best friends that summer. But of course she had to go and ruin it.
Even though Elena and Damon were always all over each other Bonnie never felt like a third wheel. They just went together that way. She missed Jeremy at first. He had left to "find something different". All Bonnie heard is once again she wasn't good enough for him. Last she heard he was somewhere in California learning how to surf. Elena, pissed at her little brother for hurting her best friend again, was there to provide support. And wherever Elena was so was Damon. By mid June if you saw one the other two were near.
By July Bonnie was practically living at the boarding house. Her house was lonely. She hated it there. But she began to love the boardinghouse. She could explore it for hours and Damon didn't mind if she snooped. She learned more about Damon and Stefan Salvatore from exploring that old monstrosity of a house than she would have from either one of them directly.
Stefan was also gone that summer. His heart still shattered every time he looked at Damon and Elena. He left with Caroline Forbes on some friendship bonding trip. She thinks they might be in South Africa.
And maybe, just maybe, things would have remained the same. If Elena hadn't promised Jeremy she would spend two weeks with him on the road that summer. Or if Jeremy hadn't up and left her in the first place. Or if Stefan and Caroline decided they could get all the friendly bonding they needed right here at home. Anything to safeguard her from being left alone with Damon.
"Are you two sure you will be okay without me?" Elena asked for the fifteenth time as her taxi pulled up to take her to the airport.
"We'll be fine. I promise," Bonnie said.
"Don't kill each other while I'm gone."
"Now I can't promise that," Damon said, grabbing Elena around the waist and pulling her in for a deep goodbye kiss.
Bonnie averted her eyes because it was their moment. She patiently waited for them to be done. She hugged Elena goodbye.
"Please keep him out of trouble."
"I'll try."
"I can hear you," Damon informed the girls.
Elena got in the cab laughing. Bonnie and Damon waived until they couldn't see the yellow painted cab.
"So Witchy. You wanna go to The Grill?"
"Sure." She looked down at her tank top and short cotton shorts and grimaced. "Let me change first."
"You look fine. Lets go." He grabbed her arm and led her to his car.
Bonnie rolled her eyes, but got in his car anyways. It wasn't like she had anyone to impress. They drove with the top down and Damon was blasting the Editors. Bonnie wanted Lady Gaga, but Damon threatened to throw her out of his car.
After huge cheeseburgers and fries and a little compulsion, the pair sat at the bar doing shots of bourbon. Bonnie was nursing a vodka cranberry in between. Damon just had a big glass of bourbon to go with his shots of bourbon.
They were three sheets to the wind by the time the bartender kicked them out. They could have stayed with less than a little effort on either of their parts. Damon told her he had better booze at home and they left arm and arm. Damon was too drunk to drive so Bonnie hopped on his back and he vamp sped them home. He only tripped one or twice.
They were on the floor in front of the unlit fireplace and halfway through a bottle of the good stuff when Bonnie stood up.
"We're friends right?" she asked.
"Next to Elena, you're my closest friend," He slurred.
"Good. Now look at me. Really look at me and tell me whats wrong with me."
"Nothing is wrong with you. Who said that?" Damon practically yelled. Ready to defend her honor.
"If nothing is wrong, then why does Jeremy keep leaving me?"
"So you have awful taste in men. Or should I say boys. Jeremy is an idiot, and he hasn't done anything to make me think he won't always be an idiot. Maybe that's your issue. You need to find a man not a boy."
Bonnie plopped back down beside him. "With my luck, I'll end up with Klaus."
She looked so forlorn Damon had to laugh. He grabbed her arm and looked her right in the eyes.
"I'll kill you before I ever let that happen."
"Thank you. You think Elena's flight landed? Should we Facetime her?" she asked. Her inebriated mind jumping from one subject to the next.
"Yes and yes," Damon answered with a wink.
Bonnie cracked an eye open as the light of day disturbed her sleep. She moaned in misery and rolled over right into Damon. Panic hit her when she realized she was in Damon's big bed. Its not like she hadn't slept in his bed before. Just usually it was with Elena and Caroline during one of their girls nights and Damon was never in it.
"Witchy, if you don't stop moving, I'm going to strangle you," he told her with his eyes still closed.
Bonnie zapped him. "Why am I in your bed."
"Fuck! Bonnie! You passed out and your room was too far. Now go back to sleep or get out of my room."
"Fine." Bonnie moved to get off the huge bed. God, the thing must have its own zip code. Probably in Texas. The sudden movement made her feel like she was going to die. With a defeated huff she laid back down.
"I hate you," She moaned.
He actually kicked her. "Shut up."
Three days later Damon barged into the room she used at the boarding house and demanded she get up.
"There's a charity ball tonight. Stefan's not her to represent the family and Elena's not here to be my date. That means you have to come with me."
"No." She sleepily rolled over turning away from him.
"Yes. We got to get you a dress so get up."
"Damon, I hate these things. They are boring and creepy old men always ogle me." She sat up to glare at him. Resigned to the fact that he wasn't going to let her sleep.
"You'll be with me. I promise it will be fun. And I'll be in a suit and tie. What woman could resist that?" He waggled his eyebrows at her.
"Me."
"Whatever. Get dressed."
"Just in case it hasn't registered in that tiny mind of yours, I really hate you." Bonnie stuck her tongue out at him.
"Such sweet words." He blew her a kiss as he left her bedroom.
He was on the phone with Elena, when she made it downstairs.
"I love you."
Bonnie felt a funny pinch at his words. She pushed it down and refused to even think about what it meant.
He hung up and looked at her tight jeans and simple tank top and flip flops in approval. "You want breakfast?"
"Yes please." Bonnie followed him to the kitchen and watched as he made breakfast for her. He raised an eyebrow when he caught her staring. She blushed and averted her eyes. She devoured the delicious omelet in record time and they hit the road.
By the time Damon was done with her, Bonnie declared she would never go shopping again. He loaded her up with a dress, shoes, and jewelry for tonight, and pretty much anything else Bonnie looked at like she might want it. She had a new wardrobe by the end of the shopping trip. Bonnie protested, but Damon was a stubborn bastard. He insisted that she was his friend and he wanted to do nice things for her. Bonnie felt that pinch in her heart again.
She now stood in front of her mirror she thought she looked very nice, considering she wasn't magnetic in the way Elena was or vibrant in the way Caroline was. The rose pink Grecian style dress hugged her curves and enhanced the caramel of her skin. Her gold jewelry seemed to make her green eyes sparkle with flecks of gold and her hair cooperated for once and fell down her back in perfect curls.
She took a deep breath and tried to calm the nerves she wasn't quite sure why she had. It was just Damon and she was just a stand in for Elena. It wasn't a date and he would never think of her that way. And she would never think of him that way. He had Elena and it would never be anyone else. She didn't even understand why she was thinking about this.
Her heels made soft tapping noises as she walked down the stairs. Damon appeared at the end of the stairs and he took her breath away. To her he looked beautiful. He looked like everything she could every want. She was afraid the pinch she felt was turning into a squeeze.
"You look beautiful Ms. Bennett," he said, icy blues flashing appreciatively.
"Thank you, Mr. Salvatore. You clean up pretty nice yourself," she teased.
Damon smirked and held out his arm. Bonnie placed her arm in his with a soft smile. She tingled from head to toe at the contact and told herself she was just excited for the party. She took a deep breath and just let Damon lead her outside to the awaiting limo.
Bonnie and Damon turned heads as they walked through the rooms of the mansion. Damon ate up the attention, but Bonnie felt her cheeks heat up at the sensation they caused.
Damon plied her with glass after glass of champagne and scandalized her with little bits of gossip about the residents of Mystic Falls. He was right. She was having fun.
She danced with a couple of her fathers old friends and a couple boys from her school and with Tyler Lockwood once. He told her he was only back for a few days. She wanted to ask him about Caroline, but she felt it was better to keep things light.
She was picking at the appetizers when Damon came up to her.
"You've danced with everyone but me tonight Ms. Bennett. I'm feeling a little neglected." He faked a pout.
"Would you like to dance with me Mr. Salvatore?" Bonnie asked with a little curtsey.
"I suppose." Damon grinned and led her out on to the dance floor.
The song changed to a slower tune once they began to dance. Damon cleared his throat and pulled her closer, his arms snaking around her waist. Bonnie clasped her hands behind his neck as they began to sway. Its okay to be this close to him, he's one of your best friends, she thought. But the lyrics of the song seemed to scream at her.
I've been out on the ocean
Sailing alone, traveling nowhere
You've been running on hard ground
With just you around
Your heart beats the only sound
Bonnie always thought that a vampires heart didn't beat. But she could hear Damon's heart. It was suddenly loud and clear.
But I know once in a while we will find
The sound of your heart beats with mine
And when it's time, I'll leave the ocean behind
So loud his heart beat that hers began to beat in time with his. She shivered.
Thump. Thump.
So I'll look out for a lighthouse
See through the fog, search the horizon
You'll be like in a movie where everything stops
You can see clearly now
But I know once in a while we will find
The sound of your heart beats with mine
And when it's time, I'll leave the ocean behind
I'll leave the ocean behind
Her arms began to drop from around his neck and she wanted to run. But he still held her.
Thump. Thump.
'Cos I know once in a while we will find
The sound of your heart beats with mine
And someday the crash of the waves will be far away
And I will sail in your arms
'Cos when it's time I'll leave the ocean behind
The song stopped. And the sound of their hearts was even louder now. It was all she could hear. And it was...wrong. She couldn't...shouldn't feel this way.
Thump. Thump.
She jerked away from Damon and he looked at her confusion.
"I...I have to go to the ladies room," she stuttered out and bolted away. Her heart feeling as if it was being squeezed and pulverized.
"I think I'm gonna go back to my own place tomorrow." She told him on the limo ride home.
"What? Why? You hate it there."
"I just think it might be good for me to stay there. It is my home after all."
"That place is not your home. Me and Elena are your home." He reached over to lightly touch her hand and Bonnie jumped.
"Bonnie, are sure everything is all right?"
"Everything is fine. And I promise it will only be for a couple days. I'll be back." As soon as I get my shit together and realize this is just a silly crush that I will get over. Hopefully the minute I see Damon and Elena embrace and kiss when she comes back home.
Being in her house felt weird. She spent most of her time out by the pool. And the other part ignoring Damon's texts and calls. She felt that she wouldn't be able to stop what she was feeling if she saw him. And she had to stop, there was no other option. She was terrified that what she felt could not be undone.
Elena came home two days early. The relief she was expecting to feel did not come.
She went to her two days later. She felt it was enough time for Elena and Damon to reunite. She let herself in the boardinghouse as she always did. She found them in the living room, cuddling on the couch. The pain that hit her at the sight of them was so intense she gasped.
She was in love with Damon Salvatore.
Damon heard the almost silent sound and he turned to see her. He opened his mouth to speak and Bonnie stopped him by shaking her head. He frowned and she closed her eyes so his bright blue eyes couldn't see into the soul she could swear she was bearing to him.
She opened her eyes and finally stared back at him. One tear slid down her face and she covered her mouth with a shaking hand. She silently pleaded for him to let her go. To not give away her secret.
He closed his eyes. When he opened them she was gone.
She was in love with Damon Salvatore. And he couldn't love her back.
The end.
AN3: I really hate when my Bamon doesn't end happy. Which is why I might need a second part! LOL!
Go ahead and review. You know you wanna.
