Thank you all for reading. I am sorry that it has been so long since the last chapter. As I said before I have had a lot more school work than I thought I would have to get out of the way. I plan to try and up-date around every three to four days. This story will have most likely have around fifthteen chapters. Then the last part of the story will be a two-parter. Therefore I would like to have the whole story finished by around mid-January.
HoneyC. I am sorry it has been so long since the last chapter. I am also sorry that I have made you worry. I don't want to spoil the ending for you, but I can say that the way I plan to write it you can have the kind of ending that you want. If you want a happy ending then that is what you can have. I liked the Toph Sokka part too. It was nice to write them together. I haven't done that much. I would like to write it that way a little, but I don't want it to be all about Toph. I feel I neglect the other characters to much. Don't worry about it, I'm dyslexic. So my spelling and grammar are really bad. That is why I write to try and get better.
"So what does Sokka think we have to talk about." Toph asked sleepily.
Aang smiled a faint smile as he tucked a lose strand of hair behind her ear while answering. "You can't guess."
It was now Toph's turn to smile a little. "I honestly didn't think it would take him this long to figure out."
"I know. I kind of assumed everyone knew. We just didn't talk about it."
Aang did his best not to over think it too much, most of the time he like most people never gave it a second thought. It came to everyone at some point. The majority never knew when it was coming. He didn't either, not really. He just had a slightly better idea than most.
"Why do you think it took him so long," Her eyes were still closed, but her voice had picked up a little showing her interest in the conversation had perked up.
It took the avatar a few seconds to think of an answer. He knew there was a deeper one than you would first expect. It was more than his friend not being the most empathic or emotional observant person. "I think he just doesn't want to think about death to much." His hand had now come to rest on the side of her hip. "He's already seen so much of it."
Toph was taken aback. She had never thought of that. It made her feel very guilty that she hadn't thought of it. A sudden surge of emotion started to swell up inside of her. She closed her eyes together tighter to stop any tears that threated to fall from escaping. Most of this she put down to the baby affecting her emotions. She lightly nodded her had in agreement. "Poor Sokka." She a few seconds later added. "Poor Katara, and everyone else."
"Yeah." Aang agreed. "When did you know."
"It wasn't hard. The avatar state uses a lot of your energy. Using that energy for a hundred years, was bound to take a lot out of you."
"But when."
She was silent for a moment as she tried to think of the answer. It was always just a fact that she felt she had always known. "I think, maybe after the war."
"You think."
A weak laugh left her mouth as she light tried to push him away. "I don't know….I don't think about it."
He sighed a little. "He's worried about you too."
Toph nodded a little. "He must be really worried. Thinkin we're both going to die." She laughed a little. Not at her friend, but a little at that the fact that he carried about them enough to worry about that."
"From the moment we are born we are all dyeing."
"That is true."
Her voice sounded a little far away as she was falling back to sleep again. Closing his eyes too, he let out a content sigh as he felt himself relax a little. The silence surrounded them and seemed to stretch out forever till his tired faint voice broke through it.
"You're not planning on going anywhere any time soon are you."
Though her eyes we closed, she smiled. Moving a little closer to the warmth coming off of him, she felt his breath hitting her lightly on her check. "Not that I know of, not if I have anything to say about it." She paused for a second. "What about you."
With his eyes still closed he leaned in, kissing her on the tip of her nose. "Not for a long time." Slowly he moved his left hand slightly so it was placed on the baby bump that lay between them. "I have too much to stick around for."
"Glad to hear it."
"Not that you would let me go anyway."
A clever remark was on the tip of her tongue, but she let it go. She was too tired to be snarky. She wouldn't have had the chance to say anything either way. As he quickly finished his sentence by placing his lips over hers. Effectively silencing her. In the nicest possible way. Sleep came quickly afterwards from both of them.
The next morning Toph woke first. Lightly she lifted her right hand, placing it on Aang's shoulder. Shacking him gently she tried to wake him to. He however was in a deep sleep. Like Toph he had not been sleeping well recently. Sometimes she forgot that her tossing and turning because she couldn't sleep, also kept Aang wake. He never complained about it to her though. Once not long ago she had suggested that they sleep separately till the baby was born. That way at lest he could get some sleep. He didn't even take a second to think it over, he just said no.
"Aang, Aang." She whispered, not really wanting to wake him up. She felt guilty waking him, when for the first time in long time he had been able to really sleep. "Idiot." She muttered under her breath.
"You said you couldn't sleep without me." He lazily said. Responding to the question that had been running through her head, little he had been reading it the whole time. "It important that you get your rest."
"It's also important that you get your rest too, all powerful avatar. Plus what help are you going to be if you're tired."
He let out a faint groan as he stretched out a little and faintly opened his eyes. "Good point." He leaning in kissing her on the check. "I'm still not going anywhere."
Through she tried to fight it back a faint laugh escaped her mouth. "I've been thinking."
"First Sokka now you. Is the world turning upside down." The laugh that followed was silenced and the smile was whipped off his face by a light shove to his chest.
"This is important." He was silence allowing her to go on. "I have been thinking about what we talked about last night…I know that it's only a slight greater chance that something will happen to me. I also know that you might not be around as long as you normally would have, but that you will still be around for a long time…..so I. we grew up only children, I don't want…I know that it wasn't always the best. Even though, at the end I really believe that Azula cared about Zuko…."
Aang had tried to follow her slight odd train of thought. He had thought he knew where she was going, but he was now lost. "Sorry, what does what we have to do with Zuko and Azula."
"Having a sibling is like having a built in best friend."
"You want to have another child."
She bite her lip, but he could still see the smile shining in her eyes. "Yeah…..maybe. I don't know."
"Than what are you saying." He was now fully awake and pushed himself up to a sitting position.
Toph followed his lead and slowly sat up. "I think I'm saying. I know that we sort of agreed not to push our luck after this baby…but the world needs airbenders. You are…."
"Stop it."
"Aang…."
"No. I have been through all of this before. I am not going to risk your life for some…"
"Preserving a way of life. That without the world will become unbalanced again. What happens if this child is not an airbender. What happens when the cycle comes back around to…"
"I know!" He through the covers off of himself and stood up. "You think don't know that. That I don't think about it."
"Of course I know you think about it, you just don't talk about it." Again she followed her husbands led, and moved to stand up. "I was so lonely till I meet you. I do not want that for my child. Do you."
While it had been different in a lot of ways, his childhood had also been lonely to. In a different way he expected, but lonely never the less. "No." He whispered.
Reaching out she took his hand in hers. "It is a risk, it's a risk for everyone. I'm also not saying that you should think of it as using me as a tool to achieve something. I am saying that we should instead on not trying not to try, we just let things happen as there going to."
With a sigh he squeezed her hand. "So we're not trying, but we're also not, not trying."
Her forehead creased as she thought over the confusing series of words Aang had just strung together. Trying to prose and make sense of it. "Yeah, I think that is what I'm saying."
"Okay." He lifted her hand and gave it a quick kiss.
"Okay. So we are just going to let thinks happen as they will."
He nodded as he gently pulled her a step towards him. So he could wrap his arms around her larger than normal waist. He was still able to get this arms around her though. As he had expected she hadn't put on as much weight as was expected of pregnant women. She was just so small normally. With a small laugh she raised her arms to wrap around him in return. Her head rested lightly on his shoulder. The baby stopped them from really being able to embrace each other. For Aang being able to feel his first child kicking more than made up for that.
"I really hope that we have one of each." He whispered into her ear.
"why." She asked back.
"Because if we have two airbenders. You are going to want to have a third then a fourth. You'll want to keep going till we have as many earthenders as airbenders."
She pulled her head back. A look of shock on her face. "What. I would never use our children to compete over anything."
He couldn't help himself. He laughed as he pulled her back into a tight embrace. Rocking her slightly from side to side. "Our children." He whispered through his laughter. Again she tried to fight it back, but she couldn't help herself and she laughed too. With a little more effort than was normal he picked her up and spun her round once.
Thanks for reading. I hope that you liked it. I would love to hear from you with any comments or ideas that you may have.
