A/N: I realize my chapters have been short thus far, so I decided to go a bit longer. This is my (hopefully successful) attempt at getting over 500 words. I hope you like it! Please review!
"What is that?"
"Like I know."
"It's creepy looking."
"Yeah..."
Most of the kids were discussing something in the distance. Jessica, on the other hand, was preparing to go on a hike. She wanted to be able to see the whole island. She had realized that life on the island was very different from the life she had led in LA, and she wanted to make sure she understood everything there was to know about the island. Even the clothes were different. She was wearing an outfit that was roughly 60% leather, 30% cotton, and 10% completely unknown fabric. But the clothes were one of the least different things. The food, for one. There were some really weird foods on this island. But still, that wasn't the most unknown thing. That would be the island itself. Jessica realized she'd only seen about a quarter of the island, and she wanted to see all of it. So, she would hike to the top of the tallest mountain. Just as she was about to leave, Ben came up behind her.
"Jessica, where are you going?"
"To the top of the mountain, so I can see the whole island."
"Be careful."
"Dad, I'm 14, not 7."
"Yes, but you don't know the dangers of this island."
"I thought you got rid of all the dangers."
"Well, there's still some weird things, just... be careful. Please."
"Of course. You don't have to baby me."
"But if something happens to you -"
"Nothing will happen to me."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure."
"But you've never been on the island before."
"No, but I encountered many dangerous and supernatural things back in the real world."
"You... what?"
"Long story."
"Ok."
"Why... why are you so protective of me?"
"I'm just trying to be a good father."
"You are a good father."
"Are you sure of that?"
"I'm sure."
"Thank you, Jessica."
"You're welcome. Now, can I go?"
"Yes."
Jessica left the camp and began hiking. About 3 hours later, she got to the base of the mountain. She ate one of the bags of potato chips she had packed and began to climb. She thought about what she had said to her father, about the dangerous and supernatural things she had encountered in the real world. She had feared that he would press further into the matter, and she really had no idea how to describe it. Beasts that could summon fire, strange things falling from the sky. She barely remembered, it was so long ago. Those things had probably been 10% real and 90% her imagination, but she still feared them. She had realized shortly after arriving that the island had many supernatural properties, and she wanted to explore them. After several hours, she reached the top of the mountain. She looked around. The island was beautiful. And very large. Off in the distance, something caught her eye. A very bright light. Her instincts were telling her to avoid it, but her sense of adventure was telling her to go explore. She hiked back down the mountain. She had left in mid-morning, and it was now late afternoon. She considered heading back to the camp, but instead went in the direction of the bright light. By the time she reached it, it was evening. She walked closer, eager to explore what lay inside the cave.
