Chapter 9

Peyton

Peyton stood in the room next to her brother her arms crossed, wishing she had better things to do other than being where she was. Fury entered looking around, "What are you doing, Mr. Stark?"

Tony smirked, "Uh- kind of been wondering the same thing about you." He walked around so he was standing on the other side of Bruce.

Fury narrowed his eyes, "You're supposed to be locating the Tesseract." His jaw clenched and Peyton couldn't help, but roll her eyes. If anybody was going without much sleep it would be her brother and she knew that this man knew that too. Peyton knew Tony was working on it also, but he was also doing other things to pass the time.

It was her brother's turn to speak up, "We are, the model's locked and we're sweeping for the signature now." His body tensed in annoyance.

"When we get a hit, we'll have the location within half a mile," Peyton walked up and put a hand on her brother's shoulder to calm him.

Tony felt the need to continue, "And you'll get your cube back, no muss, no fuss. What is Phase Two?"

Steve entered his movements stiff in annoyance as he slams a large HYDRA gun on the table. "Phase Two is SHIELD uses the Cube to make weapons." He then glared at Tony, "Sorry, computer was moving a little slow for me."

Fury growled, "Rogers, we gathered everything related to the Tesseract. This does not mean that we're-"

Tony cut in, "I'm sorry, Nick." Tony turned the screen towards Fury. It showed a plan for some kind of a missile. "Why were you lying?"

Steve slammed his fist on a counter, "I was wrong, Director. The world hasn't changed a bit."

Thor and Natasha entered, Banner looked at her and raised an eyebrow, "Did you know about this?"

Natasha rolled her eyes as she glances at him, "You wanna think about removing yourself from this environment, doctor?"

Peyton's brother laughed, "I was in Calcutta, I was pretty well removed."

She raised a brow, "Loki's manipulating you."

"And you've been doing what exactly?" he asked, his body tensing again

She let out a short laugh, "You didn't come here because I bat my eyelashes at you."

He shrugged, "Yes, and I'm not leaving because suddenly you get a little twitchy."

Peyton growled getting tired of the arguments, "I'd like to know why SHIELD is using the Tesseract to build weapons of mass destruction." She glared right at Fury.

To which Nick pointed a Thor, "Because of him."

Thor threw up his hands, "Me?"

Fury nodded and continued, "Last year earth had a visitor from another planet who had a grudge match that leveled a small town. We learned that not only are we not alone, but we are hopelessly—hilariously, out-gunned."

The thunder god's temple was throbbing, "My people want nothing but peace with your planet."

Fury straightened, "But you're not the only people out there, are you? And, you're not the only threat. The world's filling up with people who can't be matched, they can't be controlled."

"Like you controlled the cube!" Steve laughed humorlessly.

Thor growled, "Your work with the Tesseract is what drew Loki to it, and his allies. It is the signal to all the realms that the earth is ready for A HIGHER FORM OF WAR." His voice raised as he finished

Steve backed up a step and tilted his head, "A higher form?!"

Fury gritted his teeth, "You forced our hand! We had to come up with some-"

Again Tony interrupted, but this time had sarcasm dripping off his voice, "Nuclear deterrent! 'Cause that always calms everything right down."

Fury turned on Stark, "Remind me again how you made your fortune, Stark?"

Steve spoke up, "I'm sure if he still made weapons, Stark would be neck deep-"

Stark looked around, "Wait-Wait! Hold on! How is this now about me?"

Peyton shrugged and mumbled, "I was thinking the same thing."

Steve looked at the billionaire, "I'm sorry, isn't everything?"

Thor sighed "I thought humans were more evolved than this."

Peyton walked over to him and crossed her arms, "Apparently not…" Thor looked down at her.

The arguing continued until Fury raised his voice above it all, "Excuse me, did we come to your planet and blow stuff up?"

Thor smirked, "Tis your champion."

Fury yells, "YOU'RE NOT MY CHAMPION!" Peyton rolled her eyes.

Natasha rolled her eyes, "Are you boys really that naive? S.H.I.E.L.D monitors potential threats."

Peyton chuckled, "They are boys." Taps her foot, she was getting bored and wanted go back to her room or to go talk to Thora.

Tony nodded to Thor and Steve with a smirk, "You furious? I'm furious."

Bruce looked at Natasha, "And Captain America is on the threat poll?"

She rolled her eyes at him, "We all are!"

Fury growls, "That's not your concern doctor!"

As they argue over one another the scepter glowed strongly. Peyton shifted her from side to side getting more and more annoyed, but didn't want the other out.

"You're on that list? Are you above or below angry bees?" Tony smirked at Steve.

Captain America clenched and unclenched his fist, "I swear to God, Stark, one more crack..."

Stark pointed at him, "You're a threat. VERBAL THREAT! I FEEL THREATENED!"

Steve sighed and growled, "SHOW SOME RESPECT."

The most immature of the men tilted his head, "RESPECT WHAT!"

Peyton watched her brother as he yelled at Thor, "YEAH! MAN HANDLE ME NOW, THAT'LL BE GOOD!"

The Thunder God boomed, "You speak of control, yet you court chaos!"

Bruce shrugged, "It's his MO, isn't it? I mean, what are we, a team? No, no, no. We're a chemical mixture that makes chaos. We're- we're a time bomb."

Fury scowled, "You need to step away."

Tony shrugged, "Why shouldn't the guy let off a little steam?"

Steve blinked at him, "You know damn well why! Back off!" Peyton was about to walk out of the room, obviously nothing important was going to be said.

"Oh, I'm starting to want you to make me," Tony turned to him

Steve seemed unimpressed, "Yeah, big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?"

Tony thought about it for a moment and looked at him, "Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist."

Steve crossed his arms, "I know guys with none of that worth ten of you. I've seen the footage. The only thing you really fight for is yourself. You're not the guy to make the sacrifice play, to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you."

Tony smirked, "I think I would just cut the wire."

"Always a way out. You know, you may not be a threat, but you better stop pretending to be a hero," Captain America sighed.

The billionaire raised a brow, "A hero, like you? You're a laboratory experiment, Rogers. Everything special about you came out of a bottle."

Steve smirks. "Put on the suit, let's go a few rounds."

Thor laughed, piping in, "You people are so petty, and tiny."

"Yeah, this is a team," Banner nodded.

Fury looked at Natasha, "Agent Romanoff, would you escort Dr. Banner back to his-"

Bruce turned on Fury, "WHERE? YOU RENTED MY ROOM!"

Fury blinked, "The cell was just-"

"IN CASE YOU NEEDED TO KILL ME. BUT YOU CAN'T, I KNOW, I TRIED!" He stops, everyone is staring at him. Peyton walked over to him and hugged him briefly and looked at him visibly upset. He sighed softly and forced himself to stay calm, "I got low. I didn't see an end so I put a bullet in my mouth and the other guy spit it out. So I moved on, I focused on helping other people. I was good until you dragged me back into this freak show and put everyone here at risk. You wanna know my secret, Agent Romanoff? You wanna know how I stay so calm?" Everyone is watching Banner, Fury and Natasha reach for their guns.

Steve held out his hand to Bruce, "Doctor Banner, put down the scepter." Banner looks down, surprised, to see the spear in his hand. Peyton went to take it from him to put it back, but Steve stopped her, "Peyton…I don't think you should be handling it either…I don't mean to be rude…" She nodded and dropped her hand.

The monitor made a noise, signaling the Tesseract has been located. Banner puts the scepter back on the table and walks over to the screen on the other side of the room. Peyton looked and nodded, "Got it!"

Banner set down the staff, "Sorry, kids. You don't get to see my party trick after all."

Thor looked over, "Located the Tesseract?"

Peyton watched Tony as he did all but beat his chest, "I can get there faster."

Steve sighed heavily, "Look, all of us-"

"The Tesseract belongs on Asgard, no human is a match for it," Thor announced.

Stark turned to leave and Rogers held him back, "You're not going alone!"

Tony smacks his hand. "You gonna stop me?"

Steve challenged, "Put on the suit, let's find out!"

"I'm not afraid to hit an old man," Tony chuckled, but made no move to do as told.

Steve repeated, "Put on the suit."

Banner sees something on the monitor. "Oh-my-god." Peyton looked at him and then at the monitor and her eyes widened.
