"Hey good looking! What's up?" Jake asked right away.
Jake and I had been friends since my ex-boyfriend left me in the woods. He had taken care of me and helped rebuild me piece by piece. We dated for a while, and I know Jake loved me but my heart was gone and after my change we knew a relationship would be impossible since he was a werewolf.
I often caught myself wishing that I had met Jake first instead of my vampire. Maybe then I could have had a happy human life. He was still my sunshine and warmth though. He rebuilt me like I was one of his cars.
After my change and our relationship ended I was scared we would never be friends again, and for a while we weren't, but when trouble resurfaced Jake came to my rescue. I could never repay him for all he has done for me and for all the support he has given me. Of course, I rarely listened to him, but his advice was always sound and important to me.
"Hey Jake! How is the reservation doing?"
Over time the La Push had dwindled down. Lack of money led people to leave and as the teenagers stopped turning into over grown dogs, the elders could do nothing to keep people on the reservation. After Jake helping me I talked to the Denali's and slowly the money we lent the tribe helped to rebuild and keep their beautiful culture alive. People quit leaving as jobs opened up and the few tourist trap we let surround them helped to keep the tribe afloat.
"Same old, same old. Nothing new on that front thankfully. We haven't gotten any bigger thank gosh, but we definitely are not shrinking either."
"Good. Good." I replied and then allowed a pregnant silence to overtake our conversation.
"Sooo Hells Bells" Jake began in a cautious voice. "What is the honor of this call?"
While I did call just to check in on him and he did the same to me, we had just talked last week and it normally would be several more months at least until one of us reached out to the other one. He knew this was not a mere social call.
"Well I am currently in Paris with the girls." I started slowly. He stayed totally silent waiting for me to continue. "And while we were out shopping we saw a certain coven that you and I are both all too familiar with."
Like I assumed he let out a viscous growl. I had never met anyone who hated my old fake family more than I did. He was also the only person who got away with speaking their name or of them to me without consequence. Even my family knew that they were a taboo conversation that we would never breach.
Unless they decided to encroach on a lovely trip of course… then I couldn't blame my siblings for bringing up the purple elephant in the room…
"What did they do?" Jake asked in a low dark voice. I could hear him bustling around and slamming what sounded like a car door over the phone line. I never understood why he was so protective of me. As a vampire I could take care of myself. Add to that that I was gifted and I was unstoppable, but anytime a new (or old) vampire crossed paths with me and Jake figured out, he went all macho big brother, he man on me.
"Nothing. I don't think they ever saw me. Pollo and Jack are going to join us down here and maybe Eleazar and Laurent and I think after my whole family is here then I will finally face them."
"Hell no. Not without me Bells! The Cullen's screwed you hard and I want to witness you kicking their ass. I'll take the next flight there and me and you will share a room." Jake said and finally a tiny bit of humor entered his voice.
"Whatever Hercules" I was just ready to be back in Alaska. In my opinion this just proves shopping is evil. "I'll buy your ticket and have it waiting at the front for you…Now dare I ask why we are sharing a room. Do I really need a guard dog? Especially one that will sleep when I won?"
Jake and I lovingly exchange dog and "leach" jokes. Jake still doesn't trust vampires (besides me) so when he says them to my family or any other vampire he's not really joking, but with me he normally is…I think.
"Hardy Har Har. You made a dog joke to a werewolf. Hilarious" The thick sarcasm wasn't lost on me. "Just get it done Bells. I don't trust those gold eyed assholes and if they try anything I want to be there. I doubt you could ever kill them, but I could and would…Now I love you so get my ticket ready."
And with that our phone call was over. While he didn't really give me advice, it did make me feel much better knowing he was coming here.
Not that I couldn't take them on my own, but I appreciated the back up.
