Official Disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, Governor Patricia Jameson, Roland Lowry, Ethan Lowry and Detective Meka Hanamoa, do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered to be mine by now. Although she was originally based on male Danny, she soon evolved becoming her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny Williams we all know and love is completely gone, he still emerges through her at times. I like to think of female Danni as what Danny could have been if everything in his life had gone his way. As in full custody of Grace and a decent relationship with his ex.

The character of Grace has also changed slightly due to the change in Danni. Her surname is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name (Danni reverted back to her maiden name when she was divorced). Her parents also are amicable which has also impacted Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love, if anything she's more a sweetheart now.

The character of Supervisory Special Agent Jack O'Connor, Agent Ben Krause, Agent Megan Thurston, Duncan Taylor, Hal Watkins, Eli West, Officer Carl Nelson and Officer Zevran Patel, Lincoln Morris and Austin Johns also belong to me as does any other character who you do not recognise from the show. Please do not use them, or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking for my permission to do so.

Thank you.

Author Note

Welcome to the Tenth chapter of 'Family'

In this chapter we finally get to meet Toast for the first time, a chapter which I have been very much looking forward to writing, mainly because I really love his character. I think it's safe to say that you will see him in this saga. I've always felt that his character, like so many others in the TV series, was completed wasted and that there was so much more that they could have done with him. His relationship with Danni is always a key one for me but I get the feeling that his relationship with Steve will be equally as important and hopefully as fun to write.

This chapter has a lighter feel than the previous chapters mainly because it's the first time that the pair have had a moment to talk about something other than the case. I'm aware that people are asking for there to be more romance between Steve and Danni and it certainly coming but it will take time. They have only known each other for just over a week after all and it's been a busy and stressful week for both of them, especially Steve what with his father dying and everything.

I'd like to apologise as well if I sometimes use the English word for something rather than the American word. Sometimes it's hard to remember that the English way of saying it, isn't right for this saga, especially when my own brain is convinced it is the right word to use.

Anyway, please enjoy the chapter and thank you for sticking with me.

Official Summary

When Steve McGarrett came to Hawaii to avenge his father's death he never expected to transfer to the reserves and stay on the island. He especially never expected to be given his own taskforce to run. Now, with the life of an ex NSA Agent on the line, Steve had to prove his ability to run his team and show everyone that they are here to stay.

Chapter Summary

Steve McGarrett's Point of View

Steve breathed out, taking a moment to compose himself before he climbed out of the car, his eyes automatically looking around the scene, taking in the vantage points, and the defensible positions, looking for any possible place where somebody could be lying in wait for them, trying to get the jump on them but there was nothing.

The two guards were clearly focused on the job and alert to their surroundings and more than capable of keeping a scene free of any curious passer-by or neighbours, just as Danni had assured him they were.

Steve nodded to himself, taking a step back from the car and closed the door behind him, locking the vehicle before he focused his eyes on Danni. She was looking down at something in her hands, no doubt her cell phone as she moved slowly towards the entrance to Lowry's place. His eyes flickered up from what she was doing to focus on the same two Officers that had been stationed there earlier, a fact which would save them some much needed time.

He was still trying to process the lecture which Danni had subjected him to in the car. The last time he had been told off like that had been when he had been in the middle of BUD/s training and had gotten caught by his Commanding Officer sneaking off the base with a few others for a much-needed night on the town. That lecture had consisted of a lot more swear words and jabbing fingers in his direction before Steve and the others had been forced to run around the base fifty times in a row in their going out gear which had consisted of proper shoes for once which had been a bitch to run in. Danni's lecture had been quieter with a purposefulness which had flavoured every word she had spoken, her hands had remained still in her lap, her fingers interlocked tightly together as though she had been trying to control herself, all the while looking at him with a half annoyed, half disappointed look which had successfully reduced him to feeling about an inch tall.

The subject had clearly been something she had felt strongly about if her reaction was anything to go by, perhaps because of the abuse she had mentioned that she had previously received before she had moved the conversation on, clearly not wanting to remember what had happened to her, which had done nothing but make Steve more determined to find out exactly what she had been through to place that almost haunting expression in her grey eyes.

It would make sense, giving that new knowledge, that she would desire everything they did in the taskforce to be above board and by the book, if only to protect herself from the others who she worked with, especially if she was expecting them to turn on her at any given moment. A view which he would need to set about changing.

There were clearly some things which she was willing to overlook for the good of a case. She had remained silent through most of the Hesse case, providing him with the information which he needed to break both Doran and Sang Min. Her face had been unreadable during it while her body language had been one of discomfort when it had been just the two of them but she had made no effort to stop him from doing what needed to be done, which meant that she must have agreed slightly with these tactics. And yet what he had to Ivanovich up on the roof had clearly struck a nerve in her, something which she reacted to which resulted in her reducing him back to that same cadet who had had his ass handed to him by his Commanding Officer.

He was swiftly coming to the realisation that it would have to be a balancing act with his partner, he needed to find out what Danni could accept as a necessary evil to close a case and what was simply too much for the cop in her to sit back and allow to happen. Using a suspect weakness against them during an interrogation was acceptable if it was necessary, hanging them off a roof top and threatening them with imminent death if they did not comply with what Steve wanted was clearly not.

"Steve are you coming in with me or do you want to check out the perimeter?"

Steve blinked looking up to see Danni standing facing him on the path in front of him, a half puzzled, half concerned look on her face as she waited for him to respond to her. Her hands were now empty unless Steve counted her bag, making him wonder briefly just how long he had been trapped in his thoughts for.

"No the perimeter seems secured, I'm coming in with you" He called back as he began to bridge the gap between them. She had already turned away from him and was speaking to the two uniformed officers. He approached quietly, watching as Danni held out her hand to the older of the two men with a smile which the Officer returned as he hunted through the pocket of his trousers before he produced a set of keys which he dropped into Danni's waiting hand.

"Thank you, Carl," He heard her say as he came to a stop beside her. She glanced towards him, her earlier smile still lingering on her face before she brushed passed him and headed towards the outer gate of the property, selecting one of the keys and inserting it into the lock. The Officers had clearly locked the place up after they had left earlier with Evan and the housekeeper. He looked at her as she turned the key, unlocking it and pushed the gate open. She looked over her shoulder at him, a questioning look in her eyes.

"Let's go" He stated, placing his hand on her lower back and pushing her into the garden area of the property. "Make sure you keep an eye out here for anything which looked even slightly suspicious. I don't want anyone gaining access to this house, especially while we're inside looking around." He said as he looked between the two men.

"Of course, Commander" The younger of them said, turning his dark eyes away to scan the road. Steve nodded at the older one who Danni had referred to as Carl before he turned and followed her through the gate, pulling it closed behind him. He looked around him carefully, taking everything in as he came to a stop by Danni. She had stopped in the middle of the pathway, her eyes fixed on the house in front of them with an intent look on her face as though she expected the house to start speaking to them.

"It looks like Lowry has a security camera situated at every corner of the place which means that he has every inch of the area covered. I doubt that there is a single blind spot which an intruder could use to infiltrate undetected. The lock on the outer gate is a double dead bolt so we can make the reasonable assumption that if he's got a lock like that on the outside gate then he will certainly have some on the inside as well. There are two entrances that I can see. This one in front of us which I assume is the main one which is used for visitors and the family on a daily basis and a second one to the side of the house which is more concealed and probably can be used as an escape route if it was needed. Literally, the only thing that Lowry is missing to make this place untouchable is some gun turrets stationed on the roof and to the side to shoot down unwanted intruders. There is no way someone could have gotten in here and taken him from it, its just not going to happen. The only way they could have taken him was exactly how they did, out on the road where he had no real control over the surroundings." Danni commented with a shake of her head as she turned to look at him.

"Hacking the cameras or his computer system wouldn't have been doable either" Steve added, waving a hand to one of the visible cameras. "That right there is one of the latest models and they are all imbedded with an anti-hacking chip which would make it pretty impossible to do without triggering all sort of alarms. Lowry clearly takes his personal security seriously, just like Evan told us he did."

"That's not surprising" Danni replied with a shrug as she began moving again down the path towards the main entrance. "He is a father who is raising his only child by himself. I bet his whole world is fixed on keeping his son safe by any means necessary. It would be easy enough for him to get everything he needed to do that, he probably still has contacts within the NSA who would give him anything which he asked for within reason."

"Kid or not Danni, this is a slight overkill when it comes to security for a residential home." Steve commented with a shake of his head.

"Or not in this case" Danni disagreed. "I mean he has just been kidnapped off the street from a bullet proof vehicle while his two rented bodyguards were killed, perhaps he has a good reason to have all this security. He clearly had an inkling that he was at risk from something."

They stopped at the door, waiting a few moments for Danni to produce the correct keys from the large set needed to unlock it before they stepped into the cool hallway, closing the door behind them as they both looked around them.

"We need to find his notebooks, his computers and any files which he might have made up." Steve told her, moving further into the living room, taking everything in as he did.

"You do remember that I am a cop, right? I know exactly the sort of things we need to be looking for." Danni remarked, an amused tone to her voice.

Steve rolled his eyes at the comment but remained quiet as he headed over to the desk in the corner of the room and began to pull open the drawers, searching through them, his attention focusing on any papers which he could see.

"How are things going at your house by the way?" Danni suddenly asked, distracting him for a moment. "Have you managed to get settled in there okay? I'm guessing you need to request your stuff from where you are unless you've already done it?" Steve frowned slightly at the question before he turned to look at her thoughtfully.

"Everything is fine there" He answered her, a silence followed his words which lasted a few moments before he broke it. "What do you think of the place?" He questioned.

"What place are we talking about exactly? Your place or the one we're in now?" Danni queried, looking confused for a moment.

"This place" Steve said waving his arm around him to indicate the room they were in. "I mean the style Lowry's chosen for it, the whole minimalist sort of thing" He asked. Danni stopped what she was doing and turned to look at him fully.

"What's going on?" She demanded, crossing her arms over her chest as she gave him a searching look. "Why are you asking me about whether I like Lowry's decorating style which for the record was clearly picked out by an interior designer for him. What has this got to do with your place and whether you're settling in okay there or even to do with the kidnapping case unless you want to float the theory that they took him because they didn't like the covers of the cushion he picked."

"You're occasionally funny you know that right" Steve said with a roll of his eyes at her. "I'm asking you because I'm thinking of redecorating my Dad's… I mean my place" He corrected himself quickly, ignoring the stab of pain he experienced at the words. "And I've been trying to think of the best way of doing it and this style" He stated as he waved his hand around him for a second time. "Seems okay so I thought I would ask your opinion on it, that's all."

He shifted slightly beneath Danni's thoughtful gaze, wondering what she was thinking.

"Why ask me?" She asked him finally.

"Because you're here now and you brought up the subject when you asked me how things were going there" Steve pointed out. "And also due to the small fact that I was going to ask you to help me with the place, because if I ask either Chin or Kono then they won't have the faintest idea what I'm talking about because half the time I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to the house. Pick your favourite reason and we'll go with it." He told her.

Danni raised an eyebrow at him, looking briefly surprised by his answer.

"So, you want me to help you decorate your home?" She commented slowly.

"You said that you were good at decorating and that you decorated your own home, you've clearly got an eye for colour because you picked the perfect colour for headquarters so it made sense to ask you. It's not that big a deal if you can't. I'll just hire an interior designer to pick a style and go with that" He said in a matter of fact tone.

"I never said I wouldn't help you Steve, I'm just surprised you chose now of all time to ask me." She said. "Don't hire someone because they don't know you well enough to decide a style for you. You need something which is you so you can turn your Dad's old house into your home. This style" She said looking around her, her nose wrinkling up slightly. "Is all well and good but I wouldn't pick it for your home because it doesn't seem like you." She told him with a simple shrug. "I'm going to look out back and see whether there is anything out there" She stated as she changed the subject, her voice slipping back into the same professional tone he was used to hearing when they were on the job.

"Yeah okay then" Steve answered, a smile coming to his face when she turned and opened up the other set of sliding doors which were on the other side of the room and disappeared through them. Steve dropped the papers which he had been looking through back into the drawer and absently closed it. There was no sign of any files or of a computer. He turned from the desk and made his way across the room, stopping in front of a book case, his eyes scanning the various title of the books.

There was nothing about the downstairs portion of the house which seemed out of place to him. Everything pointed to him standing in the house of a man who had invested in a state-of-the-art security system and that was it. He sighed out silently tilting his head back towards the door Danni had exited through, his eyes widening slightly when he realised that she was standing in the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest as she stared at the bookcase which Steve was still standing next to, with a frown which he had only seen a few times, a frown which told him that she had spotted something which he had missed.

"Danni?" He called out to her, waiting until she turned to him, the frown disappearing into a thoughtful look as she quirked her eyebrow at him in a silent question. "Have you got something you want to share with the rest of the class?" He prompted when she remained silent. She turned, waving her hand towards the bookcase.

"I might be wrong but with the way the rest of the house is set out, I'm pretty sure that there's meant to be another room where that bookcase is" She commented, uncrossing her arms and waving a hand towards it. Steve looked away from her, frowning as he looked closely at the bookcase again, he took a step towards it, reaching out and knowing his knuckles sharply against the wood at the back off it. His eyebrow rising when the resulting sound came back as hollow sounding. "Can you see a way for us to open it at all?" Danni asked him curiously as she crossed the room, coming to a stop beside him, her own gaze flickering to the bookcase with a thoughtful look.

Steve leaned back from it, scanning the side of it before his gaze landed on a small dark scruff mark to the right-hand side of it, a dark patch as though someone had regularly brushed up against it with their hand. He looked towards Danni, sharing a knowing look with her before he nodded and turned his attention back to the bookcase, reaching out towards it, he gripped the side of it and pulled. There was a moment's resistance from it before the bookcase moved away from the wall, revealing behind the missing room, just as Danni had suspected.

Steve let go of the bookcase, staring into the room. It was of a medium size, lit by a faint light and filled to the brim with high tech computers which created a pleasant humming sound.

"Well, this is interesting" He murmured to himself as he stepped into the room, his gaze moving around him as he tried to take it in and figure out why Lowry had all this equipment hidden.

"Interesting is one word for it" Danni agreed from just behind him. "This is… well this is slightly above my technological knowhow. Where exactly is Chin when you need him?" She said absently as she followed him into the room, stopping by his side. Steve smiled at her comment before he reached down and picked up one of the keyboards from the desk. "Steve no, shouldn't we…" Steve pressed down on the enter button, watching as all the computer screens around him suddenly lit up, covered in some sort of computer code which Steve didn't recognise. "Wait" Danni finished with a sigh as she shook her head at him.

"We need to find someone who can tell us what all of this means" Steve commented, placing the keyboard back on the side before he took a step back, turning to look at Danni who briefly looked tired.

"According to your record you were part of the Naval Intelligence Unit" She remarked "Can you not make anything of this? I would have thought that you would have seen a code like this before during your time working with them." Steve shook his head at her, picking up on the curious note to her voice.

"I've never seen something quite like this befor1e." He admitted, struggling to get the words out of his mouth. He had always hated admitting out loud to anyone that he was wrong ever since he was a child. "I mean, I've seen some super grade level cryptography before but that isn't what this is. This is something completely different. This is like some off the chart hack code that only a few people could understand and decode."

"Of course, it is" Danni replied with a sigh, reaching up and pinching the bridge of her nose, her eyes sliding closed. She remained that way for a second, clearly thinking before she lowered her hand, her eyes opening and focusing on him. "Do you want me to call the office and ask Jack to come down here so he can have a look at it. He has worked similar things in the past." She suggested, frowning slightly when Steve shook his head at her.

"I'd rather not call O'Connor in unless we have no other choice. He is still part of the NSA, if he comes down here then he might forget about finding Lowry and shut this place down. I need to know what all of this is and how it relates to what Lowry was working on before that happens. Once we have Lowry then O'Connor can have this room to look at if Lowry agrees to it. We need to find someone else who can do it. Lowry made his key probably in here so it be good to see exactly what else he has made here."

"So, if we can't use Jack and you can't read it then what we need is a really good hacker to look at it to try and tell us what all of this is?" She said thoughtfully before she suddenly smiled at him. "I think I know someone who might be able to help us with this." She told him brightly, a previously lacking confident tone coming to her voice.

"Who do you have in mind?" Steve questioned with a frown. "Ryan Moore?"

Danni looked startled by the comment for a moment.

"Ryan Moore?" She repeated in disbelief. "Why on earth would Ry know anything about hacking or computer coding? He is the head of CSU Steve, hacking into computer systems aren't exactly his speciality. No, the person who I have in mind for this job is ever so slightly different from Ryan." She told him, looking amused again. "Do you have your wallet on you?" She suddenly asked him, changing the subject. Steve blinked at the change.

"Yes" He replied hesitantly.

"Good" Danni said with another smile, this one smaller and more secretive than the last one. "In that case I doubt that we're going to find anything else in the house. If Lowry had left anything around the place then it's likely that Evan would have found it and told us about it earlier when we spoke to him. Lowry clearly created this room to keep his work hidden from everyone. I doubt that Evan or Acacia even knew it existed." She said, moving out of the computer room and back into the main living area. Steve followed her, pushing the door closed behind him.

"You're most likely right" Steve commented with a nod. "Where is this person who you think is going to be able to help us" He asked as he moved passed her, out of the room and headed towards the entrance.

"He lives in the Ka'a'awa valley" Danni answered, following Steve out of the door and locking it behind them. Steve nodded at her, waiting for her to finish before they head back to the gate stepping through it. "Thanks guys" She said to the two police officers, stopping beside them. "We'll be coming back here shortly with another person so I'll keep the key on me. Are you going to be relived anytime soon?" She questioned.

Carl glanced down at his watch with a slight frown.

"Should be here for another two hours I would say Detective unless we receive other orders" He told her with a nod which Danni returned.

"We should be back before then but just in case we get held up or delayed could you please let your replacements know that we will be coming back so to expect us?" She asked, smiling when Carl nodded again. "Thanks Carl, I appreciate it" She said, flashing him a smile before she turned and headed towards the car.

Steve nodded at them before he turned and followed her down the path, fishing the keys to the car out of his pocket and hit the unlock button on it, he moved round to the driver's side and opened it, climbing in and tried to hide his grin from his partner. She hadn't mentioned anything about getting her keys back from him or taking the driving over again so perhaps she had come to the same conclusion which Steve had that he was the overall better driver out of the two of them.

He waited until she was in the passenger seat before he turned the key in the ignition and reversed away from the Lowry house.

"Where do you want to stop off then?" He asked her.

"Any shop on the way which is going to sell sweets." She answered glancing towards him, Steve frowned opening his mouth to speak but she continued with what she was saying. "Just trust me okay, I know it sounds insane but if we want my guy's help then sweets are needed, there's nothing which comes for free after all" She pointed out. Steve nodded turning onto the main road, his mind mapping out the quickest way to get to their destination, a way which would have to include a stop off at a place which would sell the sweets Danni needed. "So" She said, after a moment's silence. "When you say that you want to redecorate your house, do you mean all at once or will you do it a room at a time?" She queried.

"I want to get it all done" He confirmed.

"And you want it done from scratch?" She pressed. Steve glanced at her before he nodded.

"Yeah, if I'm going to get it done then I need to make sure I do it properly." He confirmed.

"Well that does make sense to do it that way. I mean if you're going to be living in the house for the foreseeable future then you might as well make it into a place which you love or at least you feel comfortable spending time in. Are you going to hire people in to the work for you or are you going to attempt to do it yourself?" She asked.

"Getting people in would be too expensive, it would be cheaper for us to do it ourselves." He replied.

"Ourselves?" Danni repeated with a raised eyebrow as she turned to look at him. "So, it's gone from me helping you pick out some colour schemes to me helping you rebuild your father's house to make it into your own home." She asked.

"You don't have to Danni, I…"

"No, no Steve. I said I would help you and I will. I can do the very basics when it comes to DIY. If you want an expert though then you'll have to speak to Chin and see whether you can convince him to give up his free time to help as well." She suggested.

"Wait Chin? Why would I need Chin?" Steve repeated.

"Yep Chin, you remember him? The good-looking guy who works with us? He's amazing when it comes to wood work. Did you know that he carved all the chairs and tables in his house himself? He's got a real talent when it comes to it" She commented. "Pull over here Steve, this seems like a good enough place to get sweets from" She suddenly said as she pointed passed him to a small store on the other side of the road. Steve blinked, following her instructions and pulled over into a parking space. "Money?" She asked him.

Steve stared at her for a moment before he reached into his pocket and pulled out a twenty dollar note which he passed to her. She took it with a smile at him, grabbing her sunglasses from the dashboard before she climbed out of the car. He watched as she moved around the front of the car, slipping her sunglasses on before she crossed the road, raising her hand in thanks to the driver who slowed down to let her cross before she disappeared into the shop.

Steve shook his head, staring out of the window screen as he wondered who exactly they were going to see in the valley. Was it another one of Danni's friends because he was slowly beginning to realise that she had quite a few of them littered around the island. He glanced out of the driver side window in time to see Danni emerge from the shop holding a brown bag beneath one arm. She smiled at the man who held the door open for her before she headed back across the road towards him. Steve rolled his eyes before his gaze narrowed on the guy who was still staring at Danni as she moved, clearly checking her out. He turned away as the passenger door opened and Danni climbed back in, dropping the bag in the footwell before looking up at him with another smile.

"Ready to go?" She asked him as she reached out and handed over his change. Steve took it, shoving it into his pocket before he nodded and hit the indicator pulling back into the road again.

"So how do you know that Chin makes his own chairs and tables then?" Steve asked her. Danni shrugged at him with a tilt her head, the same way she always tilted her head when she was trying to work him out.

"I know because he told me about it" She answered him as though it was an obvious answer. "We went out to lunch together on Wednesday while you were with the Governor. You know to get to know each other sort of things. He asked me about my house, I told him I had decorated it myself and then he mentioned what he did."

"And what about Kono?" He queried.

"What do you mean what about Kono?" She asked him looking confused.

"Did she say anything about her house?" He questioned. Danni shook her head at him.

"All she said was that she was on the market for a place at the moment. I only lunched with Chin on Wednesday though, Kono wasn't with us, she wen surfing instead, she said something about it being the beginning of the season and she wanted to get as much surfing done as she could before our cases started to really come in. Once they do, we won't have much free time to relax during the day."

"So, you and Chin went to lunch on Wednesday together, just the two of you?" Steve queried with a slight frown. "Where did the two of you go?"

"Chin took me to a place near North Shore, it was really nice actually" She answered him with a shrug. "I went to lunch with him the same way that I went to lunch with Kono on Thursday and you on Monday and Tuesday. Its not a big deal"

"And who are you lunching with today?" He asked.

"Probably no one because I highly doubt that we're going to get any lunch today due to the fact that we're in the middle of a case but if we do have any time then I was going to pick something up from everyone so we could eat together and discuss the case." She said. "I mean what is the issue exactly?"

"There isn't an issue Danni, I was just surprised that was all." He answered, purposely keeping his voice light as his hands tightened on the steering wheel.

"Okay" She said slowly, dragging the word out, a slight smile quirking her mouth. "Anyway, as I was saying if you need wood work done then you should talk to Chin. I'm sure that we would be willing to help you out with any help you need."

"So, if Chin's skill set is woodwork then what is your specialty" He asked, smirking when the comment caused a surprised sounding laugh to escape from his partner.

"Let me make sure that I have this right Steve, you've asked me to help you out with your house and its only now that you're actually getting around to asking me what my skill set is?" She asked him with a shake of her head. "You know most people find out what someone can do first before they ask for their help with something as important as this. You're in lucky though, I may not be amazing with DIY but I'm extremely good when it comes to painting. I find it surprisingly relaxing."

"Well there is bound to be a lot of painting by the time we're finished." He promised her.

"Well there you go then" She said. "Turn down here" She said, nodding to a small dirt part to the right of the road. Steve nodded, indicating into the road.

"Your hacker friend lives up here?" He asked Danni who nodded at him. They pulled to a stop outside a small area that had been cornered off by grey cement blocks. Steve pushed open the driver's door and climbed out. "So how do you know this person then Danni?" He asked his partner as he closed the door and twisting round, resting his arm on top of it and watching her. She glanced around her as well before she turned and looked at him, mirroring his posture.

"His name is Adam Charles but everyone knows him as Toast" She told him.

"His nickname is Toast" Steve replied with a raised eyebrow. Danni nodded.

"When I started work with HPD in March my first case with them and with Meka was a hacking one. Toast was who he busted for hacking into ATMs on the island. He's actually a good guy though. He just got caught up with some idiots who knew what he could do and were using him for his skills."

"Well he's clearly not inside doing any time so what happened exactly? Did your heart bleed for him Danni and you went easy on him?" He queried, Danni turned to him, remaining silent for a moment before she answered him, her voice light.

"We brought him in for questioning and we arrested him. I did everything which I was meant to do Steve. I just… well I put in a good word with the judge, explaining the situation to him and asked me to take into consideration that Toast had cooperated with us and to give him a break. Like I said before, he's a good guy Steve, he's crazy smart and he's young, he's only twenty-seven, he deserves to have another chance. He had a scholarship to MIT, they don't just give them out to just anyone."

"It sounds to me like you're fond of him" Steve commented. "So, he's a genius then?" He questioned as they moved towards the open planned house which was crowded with people.

"He is, or at least he is for about an hour a day" She admitted with a grin. Steve looked at her

"An hour a day?" He repeated. "And what about all the other times of the day?"

"Well the rest of the time he's… well he's baked like a potato" She said with a laugh causing Steve to grin in response.

"Ah, pakalolo" He said, making the movement of smoking something with his fingers. Danni nodded at him.

"He says that it helps him to see patterns and all codes are patterns right so my boy should be able to break Lowry's code or to at least give us an idea of what he was doing" She told him. Steve frowned slightly at the term of affection she used but was stopped from saying anything as they came to a stop behind a young man looking at a laptop with a pair of earphones on. Danni leaned over, dumping the bags of sweets on the table in front of him before she moved back, glancing at Steve,

Steve watched as the man straightened up.

"Oh my" He commented, his voice sounding lazy and chilled out. "Dessert before dinner" He pulled his earphones out of his ear and turned in his seat looking at Steve first giving him his first glance at him. The man was pale with scruffy short dark hair, a goatee and dark eyes. Steve nodded at him, crossing his arms as Toast's attention moved towards Danni. A wide grin coming to his face as he lazily looked up and down.

"Hey Blondie, Aloha" He said with a wink.

"Don't call me Blondie Toast" Danni replied with a roll of her eyes.

"Well you are blonde" He pointed out with a shrug. "You're looking beautiful as usual as well, still taking down criminals in a dress and in heels I see?" He questioned, sitting up straight his eyes not leaving Danni's.

"From what I remember it was easy enough to take you down in a dress and heels even though you ran" Danni said with a smile at him.

Toast stared at her for a moment before he laughed.

"What can I say, you blinded me with your beauty Blondie" He answered before he looked at Steve. "Who is your friend exactly?" He queried, nodding his head towards Steve.

"Toast this is my partner Commander Steve McGarrett, Steve this is the hacker I told you about. Adam Charles better known as Toast." Danni said. Steve nodded at Toast, his eyes narrowing when the other man looked between them.

"Partner like that scary Hawaiian dude who was your partner or your partner as in he's your boyfriend?" He asked.

"He's my new work partner" Danni answered, sighing when Toast grinned widely at her.

"That is always good to hear Danni, I'm guessing that you're still a free agent then" He commented happily.

"I never said that" Danni replied cryptically. Steve turned her head to look at her but she ignored him, her gaze fixed on the young man in front of them. Steve looked back to at him as well.

"Well if you change your mind then my probation period is over soon so I can take you out for dinner sometime soon."

"That's sweet of you, a bit disturbing but strangely sweet at the same time." Danni said, looking towards Steve and raising an eyebrow at him. Steve forced his face into a neutral expression when he realised, he had been glaring at Toast. "I need a favour from you Toast" She told him, turning back to Toast.

"Anything for you Blondie, you know that" Toast replied instantly.

"Good, then grab your stuff then so we can go" She told him. Toast raised an eyebrow at her, turning to look at Steve when he spoke to him.

"We're taking a ride."
