A Night Raid Gone Wrong

"Tonight's the night of the raid," Scarlet stated to several Narnians standing in front of her. Scarlet had taken up the opportunity to teach the Narnians how to handle their swords better before the night. With a little help from Edmund the swordsman lessons were going beautifully. "I would like to do one more demonstration with Edmund before tonight. It is quite a useful thing to learn, but may be harder to do than you think."

Edmund looked at Scarlet questioningly. What was she going to do now? She already fought him several times demonstrating different tactics. Which by the way had probably given him many bruises. He thought that she had already covered most of them. Scarlet caught his confused look and walked over to him and whispered, "Remember the first time we sword fought together?"

Edmund certainly did remember. His sore arms, legs, and back had kept a constant reminder of the fight. Scarlet looked at him and asked if he was ready. Edmund nodded. They positioned themselves and started to clash swords. Edmund tried to trip Scarlet with his sword, but as he started to swoop his sword down Scarlet did a front aerial to jump over the blade. After landing, she swiftly turned around and swooped her sword down to trip Edmund. At this quick movement Edmund, yet again, fell to the ground with a thud.

"And you see after they've fallen then you try to kill them," Scarlet said turning to the class once more. "Who wants to try first?"

The Narnians were extremely impressed by Scarlet, but they all seemed reluctant to try. Scarlet understood their hesitation and said a few encouraging words. Eventually all Scarlet's pupils took the chance and succeeded. She was quite satisfied and dismissed her students to rest before the forthcoming night.

"Shall we go rest up?" Edmund asked.

"Yes, yes we shall," Scarlet replied smiling.

A few hours later...

"Ed! I took this strap off and now completely confused how to put it back on!" Scarlet exclaimed staring at the mystifying strap Edmund had made for her sword.

"I thought you were smart? It is quite simple how to put it on," Edmund said. After helping her Edmund added, "You know it might have been smarter to put on your armor before your sword."

Scarlet open her eyes wide at her foolish mistake and rushed off to get her one piece of armor. It was a strong metal, but it only covered her bodice. She quickly put it on and tried to make sense of the strap. She ran back into the room where Edmund was.

"Well I'm in tip top shape now!" Scarlet said.

Edmund examined her and nodded his approval. Suddenly Peter walked in.

"You're going?" he asked.

"Me?" Scarlet asked.

"Who else?" Peter said rudely.

"Of course I'm going. Why wouldn't I?" Scarlet questioned.

Peter replied, "I thought you absolutely hated the idea about this raid."

"I do, but if it will save the Narnians I'm willing to go through with this."

"Well hurry up." Peter said abruptly.

"What's up with him?" Scarlet asked turning to Edmund.

"Who knows. He gets like this sometimes," Edmund replied.

Has he always been like this? Scarlet wondered.

As the warriors neared the outside of the How Scarlet saw Lucy. She wasn't in armor, and she had a disappointed look on her face.

"Aren't you going with us?" Scarlet asked.

"No." Lucy replied.

Scarlet sensed Lucy did not want to be talked to so she walked on. Scarlet turned once more to look at her friend and saw she was giving disapproving looks to Peter. She knew how much Lucy hated this whole idea, and it hurt Scarlet to go along with it. But What else could she do?

That night at Miraz's castle...

"You go first, Ed, and give this signal. If you fail you're dead and you've made us lose the raid," Peter warned his brother.

"Well that's encouraging," Edmund said before being scooped up by a griffin.

Scarlet watched him drift away. She hoped he would be able to get to the guard tower unseen, kill the guard, and send the signal with success. Soon her fears were relieved and she saw Edmund's flashlight. Quickly Scarlet, Peter, Caspian, Susan, and trumpkin were each scooped up by griffins and flown toward the castle. As they watched Edmund give signals, Susan spotted a guard aiming at Edmund. She quickly shot him while Peter was released and he killed the other guard.

"This way to Professor Cornelius' library!" Caspian whispered.

They swiftly followed Caspian. The five soon found a window and dropped a rope from a tower to climb down.

"Professor?" Caspian whispered before opening the window and walking in. He walked in to an empty room. Caspian spotted a pair of the professors' spectacles. "We have to find him."

"We don't have time. We have to get the gate open," Peter argued.

"You wouldn't even be here without him... and neither would I," Caspian stated.

"He's right," Scarlet agreed. Peter turned to her, "We owe a lot to the man."

Peter looked to Susan for her opinion.

"You and I and Scarlet can deal with Miraz," she said.

"And I can still get to the gate in time," Caspian insisted before running to find the Professor.

In a few moments Trumpkin left to do his job.

"Come one. We have to handle Miraz," Scarlet said after a long pause.

The three raced through the castle to find the door Caspian had described to them. Finally they came upon one. Peter and Scarlet drew their swords while Susan readied her bow. They slowly opened the door. Sadly this was not the right room. This room did not even contain a bed. However, there was something in the middle of the room. Peter crept cautiously toward it. Alas! As he peered inside he gazed at a baby! He now recognized this odd piece of furniture as a cradle. All the while Scarlet and Susan had looked inside the cradle as well.

"Where did that come from?!" Peter exclaimed in taken by surprise while still staring at it.

Scarlet and Susan looked at each other and both had the same thought.

"Mum never had that talk with you," Susan said with a mischievous smile.

Scarlet stifled her laughter at Susan's remark. Peter set his jaw, rolled his eyes and quickly walked back out of the room with the girls following close behind. Next the three came to another door that fit the description. They pressed their ears to the door to find if Miraz was still sleeping. To their astonishment, they heard a crossbow being drawn and a woman say, "Put the sword down, Caspian. I don't want to do this."

"We don't want you to either," Susan said as the three burst into the room with weapons drawn.

Miraz's wife pointed the crossbow at the intruders then pointed it back at Caspian uncertain what to do.

"What are you doing? You're suppose to be in the gatehouse," Peter said.

"Peter! Don't give information away! The enemy is in the room," Scarlet exclaimed. Caspian seemed not to have heard her.

Peter turned to her and whispered, "Quickly go to Edmund and tell what has happened he may need to signal retreat."

Scarlet swiftly slipped out of the room and ran down the long halls. She ran to the tower only stopping to hide every so often. Finally she reached Edmund's post and burst through the door. Edmund had been leaning against outer part of the wall and was tossing his torch in his hand to pass the time. When Scarlet suddenly came through the door Edmund was at first startled and he dropped his torch. It quickly fell to the lower part of the tower.

"For Pete's sake why did you do that?" Scarlet scolded.

"You startled me. What are you doing here anyway?" Edmund asked quietly has he leaned over the edge to see where his torch had gone.

Scarlet quickly related of what had happened a few minutes before in a few sentences.

"So you may have to signal a retreat. You better get your torch back and fast!" Scarlet said.

Edmund leaned over the edge to look again. To his horror he saw a telmarine soldier pick it up and shine it in his eyes. The soldier started to wave it around. Edmund hoped the Narnians wouldn't take whatever the telamarine was doing as a signal. Scarlet gave Edmund and urgent look. He knew what he had to. Suddenly Scarlet and Edmund heard bells ringing. The alarm was going off. Edmund had to get the torch back! He went down a flight of steps before jumping out a window on top of the guard.

Edmund soon started to combat with the soldier. The man was very strong and soon had Edmund pushed against the wall almost pushing him off the edge. Scarlet jumped from the same window Edmund had when she saw Peter dart across the courtyard.

"NOW, ED, NOW! Signal the troops!" Peter yelled.

"I'm a bit busy, Pete!" Edmund yelled back trying to get out of his difficult fighting position.

Scarlet was about to take the torch and do the signals herself when she saw two soldier running toward Peter.

"I'm going to help Peter. Are you okay?" she asked standing on the edge of the tower.

"Oh just peachy," Edmund said still fighting the man.

Scarlet jumped from the tower to a lower roof, to and even lower roof, and so on till she reached the ground. As she fought off one of the soldiers Scarlet looked up to see Edmund beat the man. But he had used his torch to hit him so now the signalling device was momentarily not working.

Why did you use you're torch to hit the guy!? Scarlet thought as she frantically ran after Peter. No, Is Peter still trying to do this raid?!

Peter was, indeed, trying to open the gate.

"Peter, it's too late! We have to drawback!" Susan exclaimed.

"No, I can still do this!" he insisted. "Help me!"

Scarlet, Susan, and Caspian gave each other annoyed looks, but went to Peter's aid. Scarlet turned around and saw the soldiers running closer to them. Her Heart was racing. Would she die tonight? The thought haunted her as she helped Peter.

"Exactly who are you doing this for, Peter?" Susan questioned roughly.

"This won't make you the better King!" Scarlet shouted.

Peter gave the two girls agonized looks, but kept at his job.

More and more troops were coming. Scarlet's heart was beating faster and faster. Peter looked at her worried face. He had never seen the expression in her eyes before. Fear. He saw fear in the eyes of the fearless girl. Even when going into the most dangerous battles Scarlet had never shone fear. Her eyes were so determined some swore you could see flames in them. But her eyes had no spark of flame. They were glazed in fear. Scarlet tried to reassure herself, but she wasn't all too convincing.

The Narnians charged in. Peter, Scarlet, Caspian, and Susan turned and pulled out their weapons.

"For Narnia!" Peter shouted.

Scarlet was almost disgusted to hear those words? For Narnia? Really? Or was it for Peter and his pride? Scarlet didn't have time to contemplate her thought because in a blink of an eye she was in the thick of battle.

Scarlet could see Peter and the others already had spread far apart and were fighting with everything they had in them. She killed every telmarine that came close to her. She found herself combating with one, but a sixth sense told her to turn around. She quickly did and found someone was about to strike her. Pushing her sword into the man she remembered the other person she was fighting. swiftly she pulled out her dagger and used the other hand to stab the other enemy. They both died quickly. Scarlet saw Susan look up. subconsciously she did and saw dozens of archers aiming down at the battle scene. She suddenly knew this war would be lost.

While Scarlet's back was turned someone came behind her. All of a sudden she shrieked in pain. The soldier had cut open her arm! Excruciating pain swept through Scarlet's body, but she knew if she didn't fight back this would be the end of her. She grabbed her dagger and threw it with her left arm, which was her naturally weaker arm. She hoped it would suffice the man's death. Luckily it did. Scarlet did not have time to address her wound; she ran back into battle. She fought with everything she had but her strength was quickly receding. Nevertheless she went on mustering every ounce of strength left in her.

Peter ran up the stone stairs fighting off any telmarine in his path. Then a few feet in front of him he saw minotaur go crashing to the ground. He saw his troops being killed, he saw Scarlet fighting for her life, he saw her in between fighting moves her grab her arm, he saw the blood trickle down her arm, he saw the gate suddenly start to fall down which would cause the Narnians to be trapped, he saw the brave minotaur hold it up, and he saw all hope for winning the night raid was lost.

"Fall back! Fall back! We need to retreat, NOW! Get out of here! Everybody to the gate!" he yelled as he sprang down the steps fighting off more telmarines.

Most Narnians heard him and quickly started heading toward the gate, but others were unfortunate and didn't hear the king's command. Susan grabbed hold of Glenstorm, the centaur's hand and rode to the gate.

"Where's Caspian?" she shouted.

"I'll find him! Get out!" Peter shouted.

Suddenly, Caspian rushed back to the battle leading a horse with him for Peter. Peter ran along his running horse, kicked a telmarine, and jumped on the horse just as an arrow was shot at the minotaur holding the gate up. Professor Cornelius rode behind. The minotaur was shot many more times. Peter barely made it out before the minotaur finally couldn't hold the gate any longer. Peter turned around and saw the Narnians still trapped in. He felt terrible, the were to have certain death. The drawbridge suddenly started to go up.

"Peter the bridge!" Caspian warned.

Peter gave one last glance toward the dying Narnians. He rode on.

"Where's Scarlet?!" Susan suddenly cried.

Peter looked back he didn't see her. The sudden feeling she was left behind came to him. And that was the truth, Scarlet had been left behind.

Edmund flew over the battle field and suddenly recognized something. It was a part of a dress; it was Scarlet's dress! She was still in there! He frantically looked for a way to save her and idea struck him.

Peter, stared at Caspian, Susan, Trumpkin, Reepicheep, Professor Cornelius, and Glenstorm in horror. He had not made sure she would escape. His heart seemed to have stopped. Then out of the blue a griffin came swooping over. Scarlet was on it's back.

"How... What?" Peter stammered.

"Edmund's idea," Scarlet replied quickly. "I'll explain later! We have to leave now!"

Peter turned his horse and went galloping with the others back to the forest in defeat.
