Ed, Edd n Eddy: New Adventures
Chapter 10: Scam
The sun shined brightly over the cul-de-sac on an early Saturday morning. The rays of summer were still strong but the smell of autumn was slowly making itself known as the seasons slowly changed. As the seasons changed it signalled it was time for school to start again. The kids in the cul-de-sac had spent their time earlier in the week preparing for it in a hope to avoid what happened last year were they needed to ran sack Double D's house to steal supplies from his closet. The closet this year had a new door and a big lock on as reassurance its contents wouldn't be stolen this year.
Double D took down notes of all the supplies. He reached the bottom of the list and as he checked the middle shelf he ticked of "tissues". Double D gave the list a glace and smiled happily seeing that every item had a tick beside it. Besides spending time with his best friends, studying and his recent activity of helping Marie preparing for school was one of Double D's favourite past times. He often had everything stocked up by the first week of summer vacation getting prepared for school out of the way early so he could enjoy his summer. He would often do a weekly check often to see that none of the contents had been disturbed or just to add another item he came across to his school equipment.
As Double D closed the door and put on the lock he couldn't help but think of how this school year will be. He felt he was in for something big this year. One thing that made him think this way was how Marie had slowly transformed from a bottom of the class to an intelligent individual who could hold her own in a debate with him. He was sure her transformation would be a major surprise for both teachers and pupils alike though he knew it wouldn't go without question. His fear was that the rest of the kids (mostly Ed and Eddy) would link her change with his disappearance most days over the summer. He wasn't exactly afraid of them finding out but their reaction of them knowing he spent most of his summer with a Kanker. Eddy had still not forgiven the Kanker's for what they had done earlier in the summer and his anger towards them was made worse when Lee had sneaked in and stole some of his precious magazines. Lee had left a note saying that if he didn't gave in to her demands (which was a hundred jaw breakers and kisses) she would either destroy them or send them to his parents.
The scenario was only solved after Marie had tricked her sisters into leaving the magazines unguarded and allowed the Ed's to steal them back. Since then Eddy booby trapped his room. It went well until Eddy's dad ran afoul of one of the traps and his anger would off put the fury of a storm to shame. After that Eddy removed the more dangerous traps but still had traps around his door just in case.
Double D moved towards his bed ad picked up the bag lying neatly on it. He checked its contents and satisfied that all was there took it and processed to Eddy's house. The Ed's had agreed to meet up for a sleep over since this summer they hadn't got a chance to socialise much. Between Double D's tutoring of Marie and Eddy's and Ed's jobs they hardly had time.
As Double D exited the house and entered into the sunlight he couldn't but smile knowing that soon he would be leaving his house for school. He scurried over to Eddy's house and knocked on the door to Eddy's room. He made sure to leave space between him and the door knowing that if he stood to close he could get covered in paint. Eddy had rigged his roof above his room to drop paint if someone tried to enter. As Eddy reasoned people wouldn't expect to have paint drop on them outside the door rather expecting if the door was booby trapped to have it drop inside the room. He saw this as genius on his part and also saved him the bother of cleaning paint out of his carpet.
"Come in sock head" grunted Eddy's voice through the door. Double D opened the door and was greeted by the site of Ed with a can of paint on his head and Eddy trying to remove it.
"Can you give me a hand? Lumpy forgot about the paint" groaned Eddy pulling desperately on the can. Double D quickly joined his friend and pulled. After half an hour of pulling and the occasional giggle from Ed they had at least managed to get the can to move the can a couple of inches of his head.
"Maybe soap will help the problem?" Voiced Double D. As if shocked by electricity Ed jumped up and ran towards the door.
"Bad soap bad for Ed!" Ed screamed opening the door and running outside. Both Eddy and Double D hadn't a chance to reach the door before they heard a bang. Both looked out to see Ed laying on the ground beside the fence the can lying beside him.
"Well that problem seems to off sort itself I believe" Double D said to Eddy.
"Yeah bit strange how he does it but hi saves us the bother of getting soap, anyway come instead got something to say. HI LUMPY GET OVER HERE!"
Ed jumped up and entered the room as if nothing had happened. As all the Ed's gathered on Eddy's bed Eddy spoke again.
"So I know this summer has been better than last since we have friends now" Eddy said "but man I miss the scams we used to do. It been so long it feels like we never done them at all."
"Well Eddy I too miss our old days of scamming even if they were never successful and lead to more trouble than rewards but we have changed now. Anyway we have done every scam possible what is left to do?" asked Double D.
"Glad you asked soak head" Eddy grinned. "I have one scam I have been working on. It still has some smoothing out needed but it's good enough." Eddy started to rummage under his end until he pulled out a piece of paper. He handed to it Double D who quickly glanced over it.
Double D looked over the details and was surprised to see it was a scam for bike racing. Eddy had drawn a very rough sketch of the cul-de-sac and had added in arrows to show the race track. The track took mostly in the allays and finished right at the centre of the cul-de-sac. It was 25 cent to enter and it allowed for any type of mode of transport to enter as long as it was on wheels and only one person used it.
"Well Eddy this is actually a good idea, what do you need help with?" inquired a curious Double D.
"You know manual labour writing signs you know the usual, so you in? Of course you are! How about you Ed? I knew you would! That's that settled now let's get to work!" and with that Eddy turned and left his room before Double D or Ed had a chance to argue.
"Well Ed after you" gestured Double D to the door.
Ed grinned and quickly chased after Eddy. Double D smiled. It looked like they would have some old fun together before quickly chasing after him. After a few hours of hard work the Ed's had finished making their signs for the race. All that was left was to tell everyone else. This involved knocking on everyone's door to tell them the news.
"So what you say Kev I'm sure you would what to enter" Eddy said to Kevin on his doorstep.
"I'm not sure, what's in it for me?" Kevin replied.
"Well there is prize money"
"How much?" Kevin said a grin slowly crossing his face.
"Well what about winner takes all, winner gets all the money."
"Not sure I already have money"
"Well Nazz is entering it can be a chance to show off to her" Eddy said trying to temp Kevin.
Kevin was lost in thought. If it was true Nazz was entering it would make a great chance to show how awesome he was. He had visions of him winning and Nazz running into his arms.
"Deal" Kevin said before closing the door.
"Yes that's them all" laughed Eddy. As the Ed's made their way back to Eddy's place Double D had some concerns to rise.
"Eddy that is a bit generous winner getting all the money but what happens if one of us doesn't win? All our hard work would go to waste"
"Don't worry sock head I got a plan. You'll see tomorrow." No matter what Ed or Double D tried that night Eddy wasn't saying. Double D went to sleep that night wondering what tomorrow would bring. He couldn't help but be excited.
"HURRY UP! THE RACE IS ABOUT TO START!" yelled Eddy. The rest of the kids gathered around the starting line. Eddy looked over and grinned at the sight of them all. Kevin had come with his trusty repaired bike. After the trip Eddy's brother place his bike was destroyed. Though a whole summer of careful planning had successfully restored the bike to its former glory.
Eddy noticed that Kevin wasn't giving much attention to the starting line and followed his gaze. Eddy's grin got bigger as he saw who Kevin was looking at. Nazz was at the other end of the line. She was in roller skates and was giggling to a joke Sara had just told her. Both Sara and Jimmy were also in skates both bright pink with Jimmy also wearing a safety helmet and pads. Rolf was sitting on Wilfred who he had glued wheels to his sides. Eddy tried arguing that this wasn't following the rules but after Rolf threatened to leave and take his money with him Eddy folded to his demands.
Ed was next to Rolf trying to feed Wilfred a carrot. Wilfred was more than happy to oblige and was grunting away happily. Ed had acquired the use of a shopping trolley for this race. Eddy still had no idea where he got it. Ed had run off from his house shutting about using his trusty steed for the race. Eddy had expected a number of weird things but a trolley wasn't one of them. Jonny (much to Eddy's distaste) had also entered the race and was riding on a scooter. Eddy promised himself that whatever happened in the race that he wouldn't be finishing behind him. Double D also much to Eddy's surprise had entered the race on a bike. It wasn't as nice as Kevin's but Eddy knew Double D entered more from peer pressure and to have a good time than to actually win. Eddy looked down at his skate board at hand. In Eddy's mind he was a top notch skate boarder though his skills left a lot to be desired.
"OK everyone line up!" Eddy roared. Everyone including himself lined up against the line.
"Remember one lap on the cul-de-sac first one back gets all the money second place gets nothing" Eddy told the gathered kids."OK at the count of the three. ONE...TWO...THREEEEE!"
At three all the Kids rushed at once. Kevin sped out from the starting line taking an early lead. Eddy gave chase after following close behind. Nazz moved with ease from the start and though not as fast as Kevin or Eddy was making good pace and planned to win the race on the corners knowing that the likes of Kevin will need to slow considerably to turn corners at the speed he was going or risk crashing.
Jimmy and Sara both fell at the count of three. Sara was doing her best to help Jimmy up. Though they had entered the race for fun Sara was losing patience with her best friend. She desperately wanted to beat Kevin and Eddy. Jonny moved out slowly being easily overtaken by Rolf who was dangling a carrot in front of Wilfred. Double D though it was a struggle had managed to get his bike of to a good start.
The last entrant Ed hadn't even attempted to move from the starting line. He sat contently in his trolley smiling to himself not a care in the world.
Kevin was the first to enter the allay way. He quickly turned and with full force tried to put as much distance between him and the rest. He planned to win the race early by having a too large lead for the others to catch before slowing down. While he wanted to win he really didn't want to damage his bike again. Kevin took a quick look over his shoulder and was surprised to see Eddy and not far behind him Nazz keeping up to him. He put his full attention to driving hi bike determined to build a lead. With Eddy and his skateboard and Nazz and her Stakes both had easier mobility than he did and he wasn't taking a risk of losing because of it.
Rolf turned into the allay way. He looked a head and saw the three figures of Kevin, Eddy and Nazz ahead of him.
"Oh ho they think that they have pulled the sock over Rolf's head but Rolf will have the last laugh. Quick Wilfred there will be three extra carrots and nana's eel soup for you tonight if you win the race!"
At the sound of an extra supper Wilfred ran as if possessed. It wasn't long before he was breathing down the necks of the three leaders.
Ed sat contently in his trolley watching the clouds go by. He had a lazy smile on his face and the occasional giggle left his lips. Suddenly as if hit by lighten he looked up.
"Oh yeah the race" he smiled. Putting his hands in his pockets he rooted around. He pulled out a couple of cans of diet coke and a packet of Mentos. He opened the cans, ripped open the Mentos and dropped them inside the cans. He quickly placed the cans at the back of the trolley facing away from the trolley.
BANG! With a loud bang the trolley went flying after the kids and leaving a trail of soda behind.
Eddy turned the corner sharply trying to edge in front on Kevin. Kevin had went to fast around the corner and had to slow down to regain control of his bike or risk crashing into the fence. This allowed Eddy to catch up and quickly start to push for first position. Kevin grinded his teeth as he saw Eddy slowly pass him. He pushed harder on his pedals forcing his bike to go faster than it had before.
Both continued to push themselves to their extreme, changing positions throughout that time. As both reached another corner Kevin had managed to get the inside corner. He used this to his advantage when turning the corner to make Eddy slow down and move away from Kevin or risk a crash.
"Hi Kevin that's a dirty move!" yelled Eddy.
As both bickered Nazz took this opportunity to take the lead. "Haha see you suckers" Nazz smiled back sticking out her tongue.
Both boys were in shock that Nazz had passed them. This only lasted a moment before both started to give chase trying to get back a lead. Not far back Double D and Rolf were both pushing each other to keep up. Wilfred had done well to keep up with the three leaders but eventually grew tired. Rolf wasn't that annoyed at this. He knew he could still win it with a final big push from Wilfred. Double D was puffing for breath. He didn't like exercise and did his best to avoid it. He only entered the race to keep Eddy happy. As both kept a steady pace they heard a racket behind them.
Both turned to see Ed, Sara, Jimmy and Jonny hurdling towards them in Ed's trolley. Ed had gone with such speed that he crashed into all three of them. Both Double D and Rolf saw the look of terror on all their faces beside Ed's who was laughing his head off.
"Wilfred hurry your bacon or both our bacon's will be fried by the not a full chicken house Ed boy!" Rolf urged Wilfred on while Double D puffed along trying to get away from his crazy friends form of transport.
It wasn't long until Ed had caught up with the two and crashed into them. Both Rolf and Double D were sent with such force that they were sent flying and landed into the trolley Wilfred landing on Rolf.
"Hi guys!" grinned Ed to his new passengers. Double D looked around and was glad to see he wasn't the only one who wasn't comfortable with this.
Meanwhile Eddy, Nazz and Kevin where all neck and neck heading towards the finishing line. They went flying around the last corner. At this moment both Nazz and Kevin quickened their pace leaving Eddy behind. Eddy struggled to keep up and was falling behind. He was huffing and puffing for breath.
As Eddy had started to give up hope of winning he heard a loud crash behind him. He turned to see ED along with all the other kids in the cul-de-sac coming noisily along. They passed by him like a bullet and within seconds had crashed into Nazz and Kevin. It was this crash that finally killed all momentum in the trolley which slowly creaked to a halt. Eddy saw his opportunity and sped past the trolley and right across the finishing line.
"YESSSSSS!" shouted Eddy from the top of his lungs. "YES I WIN!" Eddy turned and smiled at the sight that greeted him. Kevin had managed to get up after crashing and Nazz was dusting herself off.
"No fair man I would of won it if Ed hadn't crashed into me!" Kevin complained.
"Hahaha to bad sucker if you were a little bit faster maybe you could of out run him but you weren't so I win!" Eddy jumped in the air fist pumping it before turning off to the jar that held the money. He held it in the air. "I don't know who writes this stuff but they better keep it up! My plans actually work!"
"Awh this sucks my clothes are all dirty I don't know bout you's but I'm getting a shower. See ya!" Nazz waved to everyone as she skated home.
Eddy didn't take much notice of this as he was too busy dancing in victory. All the other kids beside the Ed's and Kevin all slowly disbursed soon it was only the four boys left.
"Hi Eddy I wouldn't be dancing so soon. Yu may have won but someone's gotta pay for the damage to my bike!"
"Hi Ed crashed into you not me" angrily retorted Eddy.
"He's your friend not mine so hand it over!"
Eddy whined but Kevin wouldn't be moved. He eventually took the money and was off with his bike to get repairs done. Eddy was seething with rage and took it out on Ed.
"OH LUMPY YOU IDIOT WHY YOU GOT TO WREAK HIS BIKE!"
"No pain for Ed Eddy! Ed is allergic!" begged Ed.
Ed's begging did little good as Eddy hit him over the head. Double D watched these events all unfold in front of him and smiled. Though in a summer things had changed for the Ed's lives he was still glad that deep down they were still all the same.
