Behind the Mirror

only a day after Beetlejuice so rudely disappeared, Lydia knew in some kind of way that he wouldn't came to her anymore, but she needed talk to him or just keep yelling at him until they figure something out, for his idea was not something she wanted to do, even if she got payed for it! By saying his name three times she ran over to the Road house and give her best friend a piece of her mind.
"Beetlejuice?" she called when she opened the door to the Road house.

"he isn't here" Lydia turned around and saw the tap-dancing spider Ginger come down from the ceiling.

"where is he, Ginger?" she asked the pink spider, but it was the skeleton Jacques who answered;

"he hav' barricade himself in hiz bedroom" Lydia ran over to his bedroom door and reached for the doorknob "DON'T miss Lydiaa!" Jacques yelled in shock. Both females looked surprised at the skeleton "mister Beeataljuize hav' juize the doorknob, so aanyone there tried too geit in will be zarpped"

"that's awful" Ginger cried horrified, but asked with a frown "how do you know it will zap one, Jacques?" Jacques showed his right bony hand where there could be seen a dark burn mark, he most have tired it himself. Lydia turned her head over to the door again

"Beetlejuice?" she called more gently. No answer. She could have said that herself. But she did hear someone was moving behind the door, the footsteps stopped at the door and she heard to her disappointment they went away from the juiced door. He was inside, but didn't wanna talk to her and that just makes her mad "Beej, you can't just barricaded yourself like this!" still no answer and she almost hissed at the door "uhh I will find a way to this selfish act!"

"why does he do this?" Ginger asked her and she slowly walked away from the door.

"because he won't realize the fact that he need my help, by his attitude problem!" Lydia yelled the last part in hope he just would snap back at her or just did something, anything! Of course nothing happen.

"Iv don't thinkz it help jelling at him" Jacques told her calm and she had to face it that he was right "coome, let us zit down"

"sorry I can't" Lydia apologized to them both "I only come here to see I could make some senses in Beetlejuice head" she looked the last time at the looked door "but he is a bigger dope, than he use to be" Beetlejuice two neighbors walked her out "sorry for all of this"

"it's okay Lydia" Ginger said optimist "we just hope you two make it up"

"thanks bye" she smiled to them and walked back to the door there lead to her world. On the way she saw Beetlejuice third neighbor, Monster across the street and his dog "hey Monster, hey Poopsie"

"oh hey Miss Lydia" Monster said in a way too cheerful tone and Poopsie yapped happy to be petted at her "have you heard that the pest Beetlejuice has going barricade himself?" he asked and it felt like a sting to Lydia's heart.

"yeah... I know" she said sad "kinda my fault I think"

"well, maybe a time in a gaol, will make his stop bother my Poopsie" Monster said unnoticed Lydia's sad mood and his dog barked in a agreement

"I hope he is not staying in solitude too long" Lydia mumbled and notice that Monster didn't listen to her anymore, she rolled her eyes and walked away with a "nevermind"
She went back home and tried her best to make the rest of the day go faster. A little difficult when hers best friend wasn't there to help her make the time flies or give her a laugh..

He wasn't stupid; he knew she has come to see him in hope to make up his mind. That's why he had barricaded himself inside his bedroom. People couldn't get into him, but he could still get out. He didn't need a door to get around; he could just go through walls. One of the good things being a ghost.
Beetlejuice could usually feel when people said his name. That's how he can be places so fast. However, he learned in his younger years to ignore people there just talked about him.
He could always feel when Lydia called him. She was the only one who used his name as a secret door to the Neitherworld. He could feel when she just used his name to her own ticket to or away from Neitherworld. Every time she used his name, it feels like chill down from his spine and that was something he could ignore or smile over. But the use of his name to call him was quite a different case, it felt stronger but still a chill down the spine, but it was a force there was a lot bigger than he was. He has never in his afterlife refuses a call for him. He has never fought against the calling…
not before today
it was only a day after Lydia has yelled outside his door how a big idiot he was, that he felt a shiver in his body.

Beetlejuice.

"oh no" he whispered. He could feel it was her. He knew what that means and he knew his name wasn't used as ticket to the Neitherworld. Lydia was calling him.

Beetlejuice.

"not this time Lydia" he growled low "don't you dare call me again" even though he knew she couldn't hear him. He hoped she didn't call the last time, but he wasn't that lucky.

Beetlejuice!
for the first time in his afterlife he refused the calling, he fought against it, against his own magic with all his might and being. If Beetlejuice powers could be seen in his denial, it could be pictured as a rubber band, when he refused the calling and fights against it. The rubber band will expand to its limit and slap right back with all the power at the owner's hand. And the owner of this magic was Beetlejuice. The backfired magic struck Beetlejuice's entire body with such powers it made his whole body crumple and he fell down on the felt like being wounded in all possible ways and left him completely helpless in the roaring pain. He curled himself together, hoping it could sooth some of the pain. He heard something break in his room, but he wasn't sure what. Everything on him hurts right now.

I will... never... try... that again... if... I can... avoid it… he panted in his silent mind, but the only way he could avoid it was hoping Lydia wouldn't call again and if she did. He has to obey and come to the calling or feel the consequence of disobeying the calling once again…

She was tired of this silence treatment he has begun on. She wanted to talk, reason or simple yell at him for being a selfish fool. She even wanted to kiss him again or hit him for be such an idiot!
I had it! I am calling him, even if he want me to or not! she walked solid over to her lamp table and raised her hands with the words;
"Though I know I should be wary, Still I venture someplace scary; Ghostly haunting I turn loose. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!" Everything she knew would happen, didn't happen. Her room looked like itself, even herself.
Krack!
She looked over to her mirror and saw a part of it was broken off.
What? She thought and walked over to her mirror. She looked at the mirror and straight into Beetlejuice bedroom, there he was! He has his back to her and to her horror he looked like he was hit by a bullet or something deadly, no matter what it was it was painful on him. Before she knew it, Beetlejuice collapsed on the floor and curled himself to a human ball. Trembling terrible.
"Beetlejuice!" she called out to him and by hearing his own name, he curled himself even more.

"Please! No more!...no more..." he cried out, begging. When he didn't hear his name again he slowly began to stop his shaking. She was stunned over the sudden realization.

So this happen if he won't come to my call… He ends up torturing himself! She was really upset over what he just did, he really didn't want to see her and this was the price he was forced to pay when he refuse her call to him. It was dreadful and very much painful hearing him begging like a child who has being beaten.
Alright Beetlejuice... I won't call you. I don't want to see you hurt. She took the small broken part of her mirror up and looked quickly at it. She looked one last time into Beetlejuice's room inside the bigger mirror. The magic she had released was beginning to fade. Before Beetlejuice room disappeared she saw him pulling himself up from the floor.
"that's my B.J... never stay down too long" she smiled a weak smile and hid the little piece of the mirror under her pillow. Just in case she needed it.

funny enough after the failed calling, Lydia never tired to call him again. It wondered him a little since it was not the first time he has refused a call, but when again... he was always missing a piece of himself or was really sick, this time it was just different. Even Beetlejuice was grateful Lydia didn't call him again, he could say he didn't was amused over this plan.

"huungryyyy"

"not" Beetlejuice mumbled back to his really(REALLY) upset stomach, for he has not got something to eat in three days soon. The ghost lay on the floor like a ice-bear carpet and looked slowly around his bedroom "there most be something in here..." but there was nothing, for he has already ate every single beetle, fly and other insect there was in his bedroom and he has stopped to walk outside his bedroom at the daytimes, so right now... he was so bored that he began to knock his head against his floor "gaaah I am booored"

"Beeataljuize, come out mon ami" he heard Jacques call on the other side, he didn't dare to knock on the door, ever since Beetlejuice juiced the door.

"yeah right, you just call Lydia and that is the dumbest thing there could happen to me" Beetlejuice grumbled low back, low enough to Jacques couldn't hear him

"are youa still in there?"

"where else should I be? Gaah just try for once to knock on the door bonehead... at least I will have something fun today"

"he iz still not ansvering"

"do you think his is asleep?" this time it was Ginger. She sounded concerned, not what Beetlejuice cared.

"you neaver know with him" Beetlejuice heard they both walked away from his bedroom door.

"bonehead and crybaby" he snorted low and he began again to knock his head against the floor "boooored" his stomach growled loud "and hungry" he whined and looked at his man-size mirror, he was bored enough to even watch a snail cross a road, before he ate it "maaaybe I should take a peak to see what's Lyds is doing" he came quickly on his feet and turned the mirror on, so it showed Lydia's room.
He dogged to makes sure she couldn't see him. To his surprise he saw that she was getting her ready to school, but it looked like she has cried "boy she looks sad" Beetlejuice mumbled low, when she walked out to the bathroom, probably (yak) brushes her teeth. Beetlejuice was about to leave, when a idea hit him
"maybe" he flew away from the mirror and over to one of his too burned older suit and ripped a bottom off. He flow back to the mirror and before she came back he lay the bottom on hers book, there lay on the mirror-table. He quickly turned himself invisible, when she came back.
Lydia notice the bottom and her surprised face was priceless(it was not like he has something better to smile over) for Beetlejuice. She took the bottom in her hand, smelled to it, wrinkled slightly on her nose and when she smiled almost happy at the mirror(Beetlejuice quickly makes sure he was invisible again) and walked out of the door with a little better mood than he first saw her, even he couldn't stop smiling after her "well, at least she now knew I am still here"

"mhhmmh..." Beetlejuice whined, there still lay in his coffin bed and was so hungry that he(after his own opinion, of course) couldn't barely move "if I don't soon get something to chew on, I end up like Jacques" he whined, when his stomach growled again, he has not be successful to find anything eatable for nights. The ghost wide his eyes when his nose took a run around in his room and keep sniffing up against the mirror, Beetlejuice came slowly on his feet and his nose came back on it's place and looked out in Lydia's empty bedroom and saw-
"B-bee...Beetle" he linked hungry around his mouth when he both saw a big fat beetle in a jar(she has probably taken picture of it) and leftovers of Delia's cooking. Not thinking he snap first Lydia's fat beetle, when he ate the leftovers and almost swallow the plate too "boy I am hungry, does she have more?" after he was done with the small food there lucky make sure his stomach wasn't completely empty anymore, he began to look around on the mirror-table to see there was some more, but he never manages to find more, for he saw the door open
"uh oh" and with those words, he turned himself invisible again. Lydia frowned first when she saw the leftovers was gone and she narrow her eyes when she realized her bug was gone too, with a small sigh she walked out of the door again with the jar and the plate in her hands "what is she up too?" Beetlejuice mumbled low, when she didn't came back after a long while.

Around nightfall, Beetlejuice has moved away from the mirror, to figure out there was something to do, when he heard she came back and probably getting ready for bed. Beetlejuice waited a little while till she walked out to the bathroom, before he floated back to the mirror and saw to his joy that the jar (with the once one beetle in it) was full with all kinds of insect. He couldn't help but smile over what she has done, while he took a big handful and munched them quickly
"even I hate to admit it... she is a good girl" he said, before he leaved the mirror before she came back

The next two weeks she began to see a pattern with her mirror. When she woke up the next morning after have tried calling him and was getting ready for school, she found a button on the table there have his smell all over it. She knew it was Beetlejuice's and she has a feeling it was his way to tell her he was okay.
So every morning in the weeks to come she found a little new thing one her table. She even learned quickly that he visit her daily, for a day when she took photos of a rare beetle and only leaved it for a moment to find something else to eat than her mother's 'special dish'. When she came back, both the food and the beetle was gone.
Oh yeah, it's him alright she thought a little mad at him for eating her beetle, but instead start yelling at the mirror, she decided to solve both theirs problems, so the whole day she digs after everything gross and all kind of insect up and put them down in the jar.
Maybe he will keep his hands away from those beetle I need and hold to them I gave him she thought and when she came back from the bathroom, she saw that her plan work.
Already a ¾ of the jar with beetles was gone and the new photo beetle she has put beside(to see her plan works), was left alone looks like it worked.
So everyday she put a new jar with something to him in front of the mirror (it was also a good way to see he still was near), and boy! Did they disappear fast! She also have a feeling he read her books, not to mention her diary on the mirror table for she have found some green dots, a beetle legs or something else gross on them, when she didn't put them back in their rightfully places. She did let him read her diary for she has the feeling it was the only way he held track to which day it was and how she was feeling, but she has never once seen him since that day he denied her

at nightfall, she tried to see if she could get a look at him. Ginger told her that they didn't hear any movement inside his room in the daytime.
He most have reverse his own sleep pattern to make sure nobody sees or hear from him Lydia thought to herself that he must be active at the nighttime. So one night she didn't go to sleep, hoping she would see him. She used the small piece of the mirror, so she could see the mirror-table without looking up. Hours passed and the Ghost didn't show up.
Maybe I was wrong he was night active… she thought slightly disappointed and looked at her Count Dracula clock: it said 00.00.
She took one last look in her mirror piece. Her heart almost skipped a beat.
There he was! Looking like his gross self, even she has a little difficult to be sure, because of the dim light. She couldn't stop smiling over to seeing him again. She could see he did take a beetle from hers beetle-jar. He didn't crunch it, but swallowed it whole.
He most has begun with that to make sure he doesn't accidentally wakes me up. The next think he did was to take his hand out of the mirror(she knew he could do that, without been called out) and took her diary to read it
Knew you read my diary, you sly dog she almost chuckled, but kept quiet for not revealed herself. Because of the moon light from the window she could see he half-smiled of what he read in her dairy, probably the part where she got the best of Claire in their art class. Then his face darken.
He most read the part where I told I miss him. He laid the back of his head against the mirrors edge and sighed. He looked over to her with a sad face, before he placed the diary back on where he found it and ate another beetle as he picked one of the school books up. He began to look at it with a really 'want-to-break-this-stupid-code' face and she couldn't stop smiling over it for he looked kind of cute when he concentrated. She was proud of him, even she could see he wasn't the one she should ask for help with her homework. She tried to make her hand more comfortable by moving it slightly. After that she looked through the small mirror piece again, she saw that Beetlejuice quickly laid the homework away from him, placed a new miniature thing on her table before he returned back to the land of the dead.
Damn. He doesn't take any changes. But at least I know he's alright With those news she fell peacefully asleep.

that with his name and the calling is made-up, for the original curse is only he can come to the human world by be called with his name three time and called back again the same way.
I know I'm bit cruel to him, but I did that he is forced to come then people call on him. if not, well you just read it.

that with the small piece of the mirror, it does come handy many times in the whole story :)
