Heyo! Sorry this update took a while. New job and getting everything lined up kind of makes it insane. Next two weeks will still be insane, so expect it to still be slow. But here's an update to the story!
"Hey!"
"What? You deserved it!"
"Icepaw! Marigoldpaw! Stop fooling around you two and pay attention!"
A white furred tom was looking down at his paws, along with an orange, flame colored she-cat. They both were in the training grounds near Thunderclan's camp. It was a sandy, but grassy clearing surrounded by bushes, brambles, and some trees. What made it better was the tall oak that was in the clearing among the other trees. Even though the tree was taller and wider than the surrounding trees, it wasn't the tallest tree in Thunderclan's territory. That belonged to the Great Oak near the lake.
In the clearing, a few cats stood in a training session. Two of the were the white and orange cats. They were young, just barely 7 moons. Among the remaining cats, was another apprentice, a dark red furred tom that was a few moons older than Icepaw and Marigoldpaw, and a warrior, a pale grey she-cat with green eyes. The she-cat was looking sternly at the two younger apprentices, silencing them.
"Sorry Dovewing," they mumbled simultaneously.
"I should hope so," she meowed back sternly. "Now pay attention to Eaglepaw over here." She motioned with her head to point towards the older apprentice who was waiting near the oak tree in the clearing. Eaglepaw chuckled, and waited for Dovewing to continue after the bickering had stopped. "Go ahead Eaglepaw, show them the hunting crouch and pounce," Dovewing instructed.
Eaglepaw nodded and stepped away from the oak to have enough room. He saw a small stone a few mouse lengths away and decided that was his target. He dropped into a hunter's crouch, keeping his body low and to the ground. His tail sticking straight out behind him. Even though he was low to the ground, nothing of his was touching it, except for his four paws.
"Notice how nothing is on the ground except for his paws?" Dovewing asked. The young apprentices nodded, watching Eaglepaw. "You want to get as low to the ground as you can so you don't stick out as much. But, you don't want to go so low that your fur drags on the ground, which will cause noise and scare the prey."
The older apprentice had paused in his hunting practice as his mentor instructed Icepaw and Marigoldpaw. Once she was done, he started to stalk forward, towards the small stone. His paws were like feathers on soft moss, not making a sound as he slowly slid forward. His green eyes never left the stone as his ears swivelled around to make sure he was out of danger.
Dovewing smiled at her apprentice, pride showed in her eyes. "Now, what's he doing?" she asked, turning to Icepaw and Marigoldpaw. She wanted to quiz them and make sure they knew their hunting skills. Marigoldpaw stayed silent, but Icepaw chirped up.
"He's making sure that he's out of danger, noting the ears. And he's not taking his eyes of the prey while moving forward," she meowed proudly. She smiled as Dovewing nodded at her.
"AND!...and!...and he's making sure to step as lightly as possible so he doesn't scare the prey!" Marigoldpaw jumped in, making sure to not be outdone by Icepaw.
Dovewing chuckled. "That's, also, correct," she meowed, smiling at the young apprentice. "Now watch his pounce."
Eaglepaw lowered himself farther into the ground, raising his haunches. He pinpoint where he was going to land, readied up, and pounced. His hind legs propelled him forward, making him fly through the air. He landed on the stone directly with his two fore paws a second after he leaped. His eyes shown fiercely as if it was real prey. It quickly vanished as he smiled and turned around, looking at his mentor. "How was that?!" he asked excitedly.
"That was great Eaglepaw!" Dovewing purred, her eyes shown with pride.
Icepaw's and Marigoldpaw's eyes were wide with shock and amazement. They did know hunting skills, but only basics and small stuff. This is the first time in a while where they had an actual hunting practice.
"That was great!" meowed Icepaw, running up to Eaglepaw, Marigoldpaw following closely behind.
"Yea it was," Marigoldpaw meowed quietly. A hint of jealousy was in her eyes but Eaglepaw wasn't watching.
Dovewing smiled and licked her apprentice's head. "You can have the rest of the day off if you'd like. I'm going to take these two hunting," she told him. Her eyes still showed the pride that came across them before.
Eaglepaw jumped excitedly. It's been a while since he had a good part of the day off, and he just knew how to spend it. "Do you think Frostpaw would like to hunt?" he asked Dovewing, who only chuckled and nodded. He dashed off towards the camp, excited to do something with Frostpaw.
Eaglepaw burst into camp, running down the slope and into the clearing below. He couldn't keep his excitement down as he searched for the light cream colored cat named Frostpaw. The stone walls of the camp were dry and dusty. The vegetation on top provided a nice view from down below. Around the hollow, dens lined the walls, some in, some out and others in between.
Eaglepaw headed towards the apprentice's den ina quick pace. He stopped at the entrance and poked his head inside, looking for Frostpaw.
"Frostpaw?" he called out quietly. No answer came, making his heart drop. She could be out training or hunting, he thought, sighing. He was just about to pull his head back out when an unknown force knocked him down, making him pull his head out in the process. He meowed loudly in shock and tried to knock off his attacker, but stopped when he saw who it was.
"Frostpaw!" he purred loudly, happy to see her. He grew a mischievous smile, thinking of some payback he needs to get on her. Shaking his head, he pushed her off and stood up, shaking his pelt. "Great, now my fur is full of dust," he meowed, starting to lick himself clean.
The cream colored she-cat purred in amusement, standing up. "You look better that way, though," she chuckled, sticking out her tongue. Eaglepaw looked at her and stuck out his tongue, too.
"At least MY fur hides it. Yours just shows it," he responded back, smiling at the revenge he was going to get on her later. He finished grooming the dirt from his pelt before looking back at her. "I was going to ask if you wanted to come hunting with me. Dovewing gave me the rest of the day off!" he meowed loudly, hoping she'd say yes.
Frostpaw hesitated before shrugging. "Ok," she meowed, "I need to hunt for the clan anyway." She got up and stretched, bring her front paws forward as far as they would go before doing the same with her back paws. "But!" she started, glaring at Eaglepaw, "we ARE going to hunt."
Eaglepaw chuckled. "Fine," he lied, smiling because he was ready to act on his revenge. They padded up towards the gorse tunnel and out the entrance, ready to hunt.
So, watcha think? I'll try to be more consistent this time than last. I'll have more of a drive this time cause I don't have many people to rp with since I got back into the books. lol Cringe. R&R! :D
