Chapter 11: Sleep
Outside room 11, James felt a vibration in his pocket, and he pulled out his phone to see a name that made his heart drop; Jo Taylor.
"What's up?" Logan asked, looking over as Carlos leaned over James' shoulder to read the name on the phone.
"Oh, god," the Latino breathed "how are we gonna tell her-?" he stopped, feeling a vibration of his own and pulling out his phone to see that Jo was now calling him, just as Logan checked his phone to see that Camille was calling him, too.
"They must be together," the genius muttered.
"Decline," James said, surprisingly calm "we can't tell them over the phone, especially Jo, Kendall will wanna tell her."
"What's going on, boys?" Mrs Knight asked, returning from the hospital cafe, where she'd bought herself a coffee, and the boys suddenly noticed the bags under her kind eyes.
"Camille and Jo are callin' us," James said "they probably wanna know why we haven't contacted them for-" he checked his watch "around 15 hours,"
"Maybe we should call them back," Logan reasoned "just tell them we had an accident and are at the hospital, at least they'll know we're OK,"
"I think you ought to have a proper sleep," Mrs Knight put in "you haven't slept all night, and Kendall won't be able to come home until the afternoon anyway,"
"She's right," Logan nodded reluctantly before James and Carlos could protest "they're going to want to make sure Kendall's not going to experience any other side effects from his fall and run some more tests on him before they decide he's in good shape to come home."
"Exactly," Mrs Knight said "I've also got to make sure the apartment's safe and clean for when he gets home, so you can talk to the girls, then get some sleep,"
"A midday nap?" James asked, making a face "We're not two!"
"Yeah, and we're not ninety!" Carlos put in, although Mrs Knight could tell he was suppressing a yawn.
"Let's go and grab Katie," she said, slipping inside the room, the three boys following her, James and Carlos still grumbling about having to sleep in the middle of the day, and being treated like 'babies'. "Kendall, sweetie, Katie?" Mrs Knight asked gently as the two siblings looked up "we're going to head home for a bit-" she stopped, turning around, to see that Dr Leighman had slipped into the room behind Carlos, and was holding a clipboard in his arms. "Doctor?" she asked as all eyes focused on him.
"I was just coming to check on you, Kendall," he smiled "Mrs Knight, did I hear you say you we're heading home?"
"Uh, yes, the boys and Katie need to get some sleep," she indicated the four teenagers around her, who each had matching bags under their eyes, and even the pretty boy's immaculate hair was sticking out in places from where he had run his hands through it.
"Of course," the doctor nodded, we'll just need to double check Kendall for any side effects or anything out of the ordinary, and once he's clear, you can check him out sometime this afternoon."
"Sounds good," Mrs Knight smiled, leaning forward to peck her son's forehead "bye sweetie, we'll see you soon,"
"Bye, big brother," Katie said in a small voice, giving her brother one last hug before climbing off his bed and joining her mother.
"See ya, baby sister," Kendall smiled as Logan stepped forward.
"Bye Kendall," Logan gripped his shoulder to show him he was there "we'll be back soon, OK?"
"See ya, Logan," Kendall nodded, squinting at his best friend.
"See ya, bud," James stepped forward, patting the other boy's shoulder gently, so as not to startle him.
"Bye James," Kendall thought it was stupid to address them all by name, but he assumed they'd take comfort in the fact that he could still distinguish their voices.
"See ya Kendall," Carlos patted the blonde's knee encouragingly "don't have too much fun without us!"
"Can't promise anything, Carlitos," Kendall smirked "see ya later,"
"Thanks, doctor," Mrs Knight said as she took Katie's hand.
"Not a problem," Dr Leighman replied as the boy's and Katie called out last minute goodbyes, leaving him and Kendall alone.
