The sun had just risen. John sat beside the hospital bed reading a magazine. Stephanie was still asleep. His phone began to ring. He pulled it out of his pocket and answered it. "Hello, John Tracy speaking."
"Hey John its Alan."
"Oh hey Alan what's up?"
"Not much. Are you guys coming home today?"
"The doctor is pushing for one more day, so we should coming tomorrow." Stephanie shifted and looked up at John. He smiled and squeezed her hand.
"Okay cool. Lady P said she was coming over to get you today."
"I'll remember to say thanks."
"Do you want to hear what we have planned for when Steph comes back?"
"Sure. One sec little bro." He pulled the phone away from his ear. "Good morning Stephie." He said kissing her forehead. "I'm just on the phone with Al." She readjusted her bed and nodded. A nurse brought her breakfast in. She ate it while John talked with Alan.
"Okay Al, I'm back."
"Well, since I woke up, dad and the others almost forgot about Stephanie. So I suggested that we have a small homecoming party for her." He could hear the smile in Alan's voice.
"That's very thoughtful of you Alan."
"It was no big deal. We have everything organized."
"How did Virgil, Scott and Penny go at Stephanie's apartment?"
"Great. They brought everything over here."
"Okay cool. So all she has to do is put everything into place now?"
"Nope. We sorted that all out. Her new room set up across from yours John. We put all her books, clothes, movies, electronics etc. in a similar way to what her apartment looked like. Dad also bought her a television unit with a DVD player, just like what everyone has in their rooms."
"No way! That is very kind of you guys. She will be thrilled." He saw Stephanie raise an eyebrow.
"It's our secret John. Don't tell her."
"I wouldn't dream of it."
"TinTin and I also got her one of those e-reader things. We thought she might like that."
"I'm sure she will." Stephanie pushed over her leftover breakfast and half a hot chocolate to John. He held up a finger to say he would be a minute.
"I know she likes books."
"I think that's an underestimation Al."
"I'm sure it is. Hey is she awake? Can I talk to her?"
"Of course you can. She will be very happy to speak to someone other than myself for once." John said. He could hear Alan laughing as he passed the phone to Stephanie. He sat back and ate the rest of her breakfast.
Alan must have said something funny, because she began to laugh. John noticed she had dimples which made him smile even more. The girl before him had changed back into the worry free woman whom he had travelled with to the moon and back. For the past week, she had been self-conscious and kept her emotions bottled up. Ever since she was fired from her forensic science job and her father practically said that he never wanted to see her again, stealing all her life's savings, she switched off. It's great to see her happy again. She is slowly recovering both physically and mentally now. I just wish that she was able to contact her mother. They were always really close. It would do no good for me to go over there. Maybe TinTin could go there.
It was about 20 minutes when Stephanie woke John from his mental daydream. "TinTin would like to talk to you."
"Hello?"
"Hey John. I just wanted to ask you something."
"Fire away Tin."
"Well, I've just been speaking with Stephanie and she has been telling me about her mother who adopted her at a young and how much she misses her. I know that her adoptive father despises you a lot. Would you like me to go over there and talk with her mother? Just to make sure she is okay?"
"You would do that for Steph? For me?"
"Of course. I might take Alan with me though."
"That would be great TinTin."
"I'll organise it with your father."
"Thank you."
"See you tomorrow!"
"Until then Tin." He closed the phone and looked over at Steph.
"So what were you talking about with Alan?" She asked.
"Not much. He was just asking when we were going back."
"Okay." She suspected something was going on but didn't press on the matter.
"Now what did Alan say to make you laugh?" He asked with a smile on his face.
"He said, I thought you might like to hear a different voice for once. It must be horrible to listen to John's every day." John couldn't help but chuckle. Steph smiled and squeezed his hand.
"It's good to see that you're back to yourself." He said answering her squeeze.
"I know. I've depressed for the past week. I guess once my adoptive father and my old boss stripped me of my life I guess I kinda shut down. But talking to Alan and Tin just reopened my eyes and brought me back. But you," she said sitting up fully cupping his cheek, "You are my pie maker. You're my very own Ned. That just makes you even more special." John smiled. She leant forward and kissed him.
Lady Penelope had just arrived and had heard the last part of that conversation. She smiled. They are so sweet.
"Hello Lady Penelope." Stephanie said as she spotted her.
"Hello Stephanie and John." Penny walked further into the room and sat on the chair beside John. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm great. I just want to go back to the comforts of Tracy Island right now."
"I'm sure you are." Lady Penelope pulled out a blue package from her pink bag. "I bought you something for tonight and tomorrow."
"You didn't have to. Thank you." She opened the package to find a lovely white with red spotted dress with a red belt to go around the waist. "I love it thank you!" Next she pulled out pyjama pants covered in music notes. The shirt had writing on it which said 'Music is my life.' "Thank you Lady Penelope!" She hugged the lady dressed head to toe in pink.
They chatted for hours before visiting hours were over. Stephanie had already put on her new pjs and had fallen asleep. Not long after she, John had also fallen asleep on the chair next to her. Lady Penelope smiled to herself as she walked to a nearby hotel where Parker was waiting for her.
Those two would follow each other off a cliff I'm sure. I bet Alan and TinTin would do the same.
