Chapter 6 – The talk on road

"Alice?" – Popola quietly asked when Devola moved a little further away to scout the path ahead. They were currently moving toward the Resistance Camp. Since the girl walking speed was extremely slow, never mind that her injuries were not completely healed, it had been decided that both androids would carry her. However, in the end the one, who was carrying the child, was the gentle sister since her twin said that she was better in fighting and scouting. Thus, it was a perfect opportunity to clarify some things – "Alice, are you awake?"

"Mhm…" – the puppeteer responded with a simple sound. She had not restored her magical power despite being awake for dozen of hours and had felt tired, the feeling that became annoyingly familiar to her. It was probably the fault of her severe injuries and human biology as well. The scorching never setting sun did not make the traveling pleasurable even in shadows too. To put it simply, she was dozing off on the back of gynoid, luckily for herself esteem without drooling.

"Could you tell me about your eyes?" – It was a question Popola had wanted to ask for a while. Only the presence of her sister made it hard to ask. She definitely remembered seeing the eerie red eyes brightly glowing in the dim room. It could be ocular implants since the color of the irises changed several times but neither initial scan nor more detailed one were able to detect any type of artificial device inside the girl eyes.

Alice, still half-asleep, mumbled in return – "You mean the color of my eyes?" – She remembered that Marisa and Reimu once mentioned to her that her eyes sometimes had a different color to her original deep blue or phantom-seeing power golden – "It is a side effect of enormous magical corruption…" – The most noticeable and fear inducing color was red, the one she heard from her mother. She saw it herself in the water reflection as well, so it was probably about it - "My eyes starts to shine red when the magic power inside my body is high enough to seep through them… Do you believe in magic, right?" – There was a long pause before the girl been awoken from her drowsiness once again. She put her chin on the gynoid head and continued – "Mother put a lot of effort to ensure that I would not end like others though…"

"Like others?" – The words came out by themselves.

"Yeah…" – There was a tint of sadness in the Alice's voice. She absentmindedly looked forward where Devola was dealing with small machine without showing any hesitation. It reminded her about the first time she had been shown the difference between her, Makai creations and normal humans – "The corrupted has only two possible ends." – Sighing, the girl closed her eyes – "The merciful ending is turning to ashes… The body of afflicted would transmute into powder like substance and crumble…" – The figure in red dress and white apron throwing dozens of sword appeared in her mind. It was a nostalgic memory of sorts, nostalgic and frightening – "The others transforms into blood lusting existences, without any hints of humanity inside. They hunt and devour everything. Their red eyes shining brightly in the darkness of the night…"

Popola's movements became noticeably slower. Everything, she had just heard, was similar to something she knew for a lot of time. Was not the Disease the same? Than did it mean that Alice was infected as well? Nevertheless, how this girl was able to resist it? Did her mother lead the research to save her daughter from the awful demise? There were a lot of questions that started to swarm the android – "And what is about you?"

Yawning, the puppeteer tried to remember what her mother told her about magic corruption and solution to fix it – "Mother… I actually cannot say anything about it. This topic was boring and I preferred to play…" – Alice yawned one more time and became silent. Her breath slowly turned even and less evident. The girl was sleeping.

The gynoid smiled and continued to walk with faster pace, to catch up with her sister, who was waiting not far away.

"We will reach the camp soon," – Devola looked at her sister and sleeping girl. It took quite a lot of time to travel from northeast edge of the ruins to their current positions, after all they could not travel with the same speed as usual. She nodded to towards the way where the Resistance Camp was located – "How we should deal with others inside the camp? I doubt that those blockheads know how to deal with a child. And some of them are very… Emotional about humans and all, too emotional to my taste."

Popola stopped for a moment. There was truth in those words. The Resistance and YoRHa, especially YoRHa, had a number of members that revered humans as gods. If the girl's theory was right, it would make her the only human alive! YoRHa response was quite easy to predict. And… It could be inconvenient for the child to grow in a gilded cage. However, it was impossible for them to take care of Alice alone. Their models were despised by other androids and they were usually sent to the most dangerous missions without any support. It meant that there was a high chance for them to perish, additionally the child would be left for herself for prolonged period of time.

"Well… Should we talk about this with Anemone?" – The Resistance leader was the least hostile toward them and the most levelheaded out of all bunch. As the bonus, twins suspected that Anemone had some connections with YoRHa, her own or through others.

The other gynoid was silent for several seconds, thinking about such proposal. She had another solution, which was bold and dangerous – "We can just leave and take care of the kid ourselves… This way we don't need to worry about YoRHa and others…"

"Are you insane, sister?" – Popola started to walk – "What about machines?" – She glared at Devola who opened her mouth to retort – "The strength in numbers, in numbers… It would be much safer for Alice to be protected by several dozens of androids, specialized for combat…"

Devola shrugged her shoulders. She knew that it would be better to get support from the Resistance and YoRHa. Still, her impressions about the latter group were not very positive. There was something fishy about them whenever she met one. Not that they met many of those black clad top tech androids.

Shaking her head, Devola dashed forward, bypassing her sister and resumed her scouting. Only several kilometers separated them from their destination. It would not be funny to run right into machine ambush… Popola slowly followed her sister while trying not to awake the girl on the back.

The lonely figure with a long straight white hair was standing on a building roof, overlooking the specific street. Her face had no trace of any emotion while she was watching the pair of androids traveling toward the Resistance Camp. She observed quite a lot of small parties but this one had something interesting with them. It was a small, definitely non-combat android, likely from the age of humans. Despite being negative about YoRHa and all, she was still curious about android creators…
