Chapter 10

Going back

Peter and I sat on the beach watching the kids playing in the water. Peter put his arms around me as I leaned back into him. "Where has the time gone?" I asked as we watched the children. Liam was ten and growing like a weed. Audrey our little girl was five now and looking more like me every day with Peter's ambition.

The kids came racing over to us laughing making me smile. I just love hearing them laugh and will do anything to keep them laughing. Peter chased Liam and Audrey as they squealed hiding behind my legs. "Safe us mummy!" Liam shouted. Peter laughed so very hard.

"Mummy won't be able to save you if she is battling me." Peter chuckled going trying to attack me.

"No you don't Peter Pevensie." I dodged him then started running down the beach until he tackled me. Breathing hard trying to catch my breath from laughing so hard. Looking up at Peter as his blue eyes stared down in my green ones. Giving me a quick kiss then hearing Liam say ew. Laughing we sat up as the kids sat with us. Audrey in Peter's lap and Liam in mine.

"Kiss me daddy, like you do with mummy." We smiled as Peter kissed her cheek making her blue eyes twinkle. She yawned laying her head on his shoulder as he rubbed her back.

"Looks like someone is tired." Looking at our children as they lids drooped. Liam rubbed at his eyes fighting to stay awake as long as possible. Standing up Peter held on to an already dozing Audrey. "Time for bed for you two." Liam shook his head making his long black hair fly everywhere. His dark blue eyes heavy lidded stared up at both of us fighting to stay awake.

"You promised we'd watch the stars tonight daddy." Liam whined. Picking him up hugging him.

"Maybe some other night dear one," rocking him. We headed back inside putting the kids to bed. Peter and I joined the others in the study. Susan was reading as Edmund and Lucy were playing chess.

"How was the beach?" Lucy asked looking up as we walked in.

"It was great. I love nights like this." Peter pulled me to sit with him on the couch. Laying against his chest as he played with my hair. Feeling relaxed closing my eyes listening to the others speak.

"Pete did you hear that the White Stag has been seen around the Shuttering Woods?" Edmund asked. "They say that whoever captures the stag gets their wishes granted. You guys in?"

"Of course, how about you girls?" Peter asked we all agreed. Yawning getting up looking at the others.

"I think I am going to head to bed. Good night everyone." Biding everyone good night I headed back to our chambers. Shutting the door I changed into my sleep wear. Going out onto the balcony as the rays of the moon illuminated the area. Taking out the braid rubbing my head once my hair was free from the containment.

"Bridget?" Peter called from the bedroom.

"Out here Peter." I called back. He came out making me look at him. "I love you so much. Promise me whatever happens you will come back to me," hugging him. His arms tightened around me.

"Of course I will. I love you but why would you say something like that?" Looking up at him as his hand touched my hair that blew into my face.

"Not sure but I feel like something might happen and soon. Just know that you and the kids are my everything." Placing my head on his shoulder as we just stood in an embrace.

"You and the kids are my treasures. Nothing will ever change that." Kissing my head making me look up at him. "Come on let's go to bed. We have a big day tomorrow." Nodding going to the bed laying down in his arms falling into a deep sleep.

Morning came as we were getting ready for the outing. Hearing little feet come pounding over to us seeing Liam and Audrey running up to us. "Mummy why can't we come with you?" Audrey asked Peter picked her up.

"Not this time princess. When you're older maybe." Peter setting her down as she sulked. Pinching her nose causing her to laugh but she was still sad but understood.

"Why can't I go? I am as good as dad." Liam pouted. Bending down to look at him eye level.

"Liam I know that you are a great rider. But I want you to stay here with your sister. If something is to happen to us which there shouldn't I want you to keep you sister safe." I whispered to him. "Can I count on you?" Puffing out his chest in pride.

"You can count on me mum." He said making me nod.

"Good boy. You behave for your tutors and we should be back before dinner. I love you both." Hugging him then Audrey as they hugged me back.

"Come back soon." He responded as I stood back up to mount Stargaze.

"I will. Be good for the Beavers and Mr. Tumnus."

"Love you mummy, daddy." Audrey said as she stood beside Liam waving at us. We rode off in search of the stag.

Riding for a few hours until I noticed that Edmund fell behind. "Hey guys Edmund's gone!" Hollering at the others as we turned around to find him. Finding him talking to Phillip.

Come on Ed." Susan called as we stopped in a clearing.

"Just catching my breath," he said stroking Phillip's neck.

"That's all we'll catch at this rate," Susan complained.

"What was it that he said Susan?" Lucy asked being a smart one.

"You girls wait at the castle and I'll catch the stag myself." Susan imitated her younger brother making us all laugh.

"What's this?" Peter asked looking at something as he dismounted his horse. It was a lamppost covered in vines. "It seems familiar."

"I vaguely remember this." I commented as we all got off our horses.

"As if from a dream." Susan chimed in.

"Or a dream of a dream." Lucy looked around. "Spare 'oom?" Taking off in the opposite direction causing us to once again chase after her.

"Lucy?" Peter asked.

"Not again." Susan complained.

"Lu?"

"Come on." Following her deeper and deeper into thickening branches. Something didn't feel right.

"Peter we need to stop." Grabbing his hand making him look at me. "Something's not right. Let's go back to Cair Paravel and the children." But he wasn't listening just hung onto my hand.

"These aren't branches." Peter shoved things away letting go of my hand.

"They're coats." Barely hearing Susan and the others. Things were getting quiet and I started to panic.

"Peter!" Shouting hearing nothing. "Susan, Lucy, Edmund!" No one answered me. Turning around to head back the way I had come only to trip causing me to fall backwards and landing on a wooden floor. Sitting up staring at an old wardrobe as thing reeled through my mind. Looking down at my legs seeing that I was once again wearing my da's trousers.

Scrambling to my feet looking around I was in my bedroom at my grandparents. Seeing the mirror in the corner carefully creeping over to it. Seeing my sixteen year old reflection staring back at me. Turning around going to the wardrobe banging on the back of it. "Let me back. My kids need me! Peter! Peter!" Slumping to the floor crying so hard I might throw up.

Hearing the door open as someone came into the room. "Bridget what is the matter girl?" She asked me. All I could do was sob in her arms as she held me. Once I was calm enough she helped me over to the bed. "Now tell me what happened."

Telling her of my adventures in Narnia. About meeting Peter and everyone, defeating the witch, even my children. "Now I will never see them again, Peter, Susan, Lucy, Edmund. My children. How could Aslan have let this happen?" Starting to sob again.

"He has a reason for everything darling. But look you still have the ring Peter gave you." Holding up my hand that my ring still adorned my finger. Proof of our love for one another. Crying once again wondering what Peter was doing right now. Laying down falling asleep praying that this was some sort of nightmare that I may wake up from at any moment.

Two months passed since returning back. Missing everyone so much and hating myself for leaving them. My friends, family, my children. I had promised to come back to them and now I will never see them again. I bet the whole kingdom was out searching for us.

Hearing grandma come into the room making me look up at her. "Darling tomorrow I have to go visit an old friend of mine in Coombe Halt. Would you like to come?" Going to turn her down but decided I should go anyway. Nodding my answer continuing to stare out the window.

After a while getting up going over to the wardrobe placing my hand on the back of it wishing with all my heart that it would just open. Doing this everyday hoping Aslan would let me back in but it never did. My depression deepened with every passing day.

The next morning in the bathroom looking at my reflection in the mirror. I looked like a ghost, my face gaunt looking, eyes red. I have lost weight from not eating. Back in my bedroom changing into a long blue pencil skirt that covered my feet, a white blouse and a navy blue sweeter. Going down stairs seeing grandma and grandpa sitting at the table eating breakfast. There was a bowl of oatmeal at my place at the table but I wasn't hungry so I just looked out the window. Grandpa sighed taking my hand making me look at him.

"Love you have to eat something. Your mother and father would never forgive us for sending their precious daughter home looking like a skeleton." He said looking at me with concern on his face. Giving them a small smile picking up my spoon eating a few bites of oatmeal. They smiled knowing that it was a start.

Later that morning we were on our way to grandma's friend. Getting there looking up at the mansion that stood before us. Whoever lived here must be very rich. Following grandma as she rang the doorbell as another woman answered. She led us into the house asking us to wait while she got the professor as she called him.

"Ah my dear Polly I am so glad that you could make it." A man came up to her as they hugged. "Oh who is this beautiful young woman?" He asked her looking at me.

"This Digory is my granddaughter Bridget. Bridget this is my friend Digory Kirk." She introduced us. Going up to him shaking his hand then brought it to his lips.

"Lovely to meet you Bridget. I left something in the library for your grandmother can you go and fetch it for me. It's down the hall and to the right." Nodding I started down the hallway. "It's a little blue book sitting on the table." Reaching the door opening it only stopping in the door way knees weak I stared at four people I thought I would never see again.

Three heads moved at the sound of the door opening. The fourth person just sat in a window seat staring out the window. The three of them ran up to me hugging me so tightly. Walking up to the boy who had stolen my heart from the first moment we met in the snowy land of Narnia all those years ago.

Clearing my throat to get his attention. "Not now Susan, I'm not in the mood." He didn't even turn his head causing me to chuckle.

"Well now Peter Pevensie is that any way to speak to your wife?" The sound of my voice caused him to look at me. His blue eyes lighten up as he stared at me. Getting down from the seat pulling me into a hug so tight as if he was going to lose me again.

"Bri is this really you? Are you really here?" Placing his hand to my face capturing my lips with his. It has been to long since I was in his arms again. "I love you so much. I don't ever want to lose you again."

"Peter never let go of my hand." Pulling me to the couch as we just held each other. The other's left giving us some alone time.

Staying like this for hours until Susan came letting us know that dinner was ready. Even grandma and I were invited for the meal. I ate for the first time in two months a full meal not just tiny bites. Apparently Peter had problems eating as well.

"What are you going to do about being married? You were married in Narnia but not here?" Susan asked. "I highly doubt being married at sixteen will go smoothly with our parents."

"She's right. Even though you will always be part of the family Bri." Edmund commented. Peter took my hand making me noticed that he kept his wedding band on. Aslan let him keep it too.

"I have something for you two." The professor dug into his pocket revealing two cold chains handing one to Peter and me. "For the time being keep them on this and wear them at all times. Aslan let you two keep your rings meaning that you are meant to be together for all time."

"Thank you very much sir." I said placing the chain around my neck so I wouldn't lose it.

After dinner Peter led me to the spare room with the wardrobe they used to get to Narnia. Placing my hand on the door thinking about our children. "Do you think they hate us?" Asking him as he pulled me into his arms.

"I don't know. But they know we love them. Bridget I don't want us to be apart again." Nodding as his arms tightened around me.

"Neither do I but just a few days ago we received a letter from my mum. My father has been found wounded. They are transporting him to a hospital back in Ireland. Mum want's me home as soon as possible. But I don't want to leave you."

"When will you leave?" He asked. Sadness laced in his voice.

"In two weeks." I told him starting to sob.

"Then stay with me until you have to leave. I am sure the professor and your grandma won't mind." Looking up at him he had a determined look on his face. Nodding we went to ask permission which we were granted.

Two weeks passed quickly and now we are standing at the station saying good byes. Lucy was crying, Susan looked upset, even Edmund was unhappy. But my heart and Peter's were breaking knowing that we were to be parted by an ocean.

"I will come back once da is better. I will ask to come stay with my grandparent's. I will come back to you Peter. I love you so much."

"I love you to. Here," he took his wedding band off his finger placing it on the gold chain the professor gave him. Placing it around my neck so I would always have it. I did the same for Peter. Now he had mine. "I promise to give this back to you once we meet again."

"I promise as well." Kissing him one last time before getting on the train. Waving at everyone as the train pulled away. I will see them again someday.
