Chapter 10
Samantha stood up slowly staring at the ground where the hologram was. Trying to wipe the tears from her eyes she walked on. Eyes scanning the hallway, looking from door to door not seeing any difference. The air around Samantha began to get cool she could feel the cold on her fingertips and it stung her face where still wet tears fell. Samantha didn't give the door that was emitting the piercing air a second glance, she ran. Oppressing the images of Clara lying lifeless on the ground tears fell in time with the beats of her feet on the floor. Rounding another corner that led down a strenuous hallway Samantha spotted an open doorway with a low glow pouring out of it. Samantha slowed down fearing the worst in the room until she heard crying and hesitated a fraction before running again towards the door. Each step she took pain stabbed at her upper leg though that pain left her mind when she recognised The Doctors and Clara's low voices coming from the open door.
"What do you mean it's too late?" Clara all but whispered, keeping her eyes on Samantha who was in her arms as both The Doctor and her were on the floor. Knowing all to well what The Doctor was going to say she still didn't want to hear it. A concrete numbness filled her body as she turn to look at The Doctors face.
"She's gone." The Doctor answered in a low voice. Clara stared at him for a few seconds before her face crumpled and she broke down. Tears clouded her vision as she looked down at Samanthas body and she felt The Doctors arms around her.
Samantha skidded to a silent stop not believing her eyes. On the ground was The Doctor, Clara and herself motionless in Clara's arms, Samantha blinked. Her body was gone. She gasped. Before Clara could comprehend why there was no longer a weight in her arms she looked up. Samantha stared at Clara's tear stricken face as The Doctor also looked up. Within seconds she ran to them and dropped down in Clara's arms. Clara almost couldn't believe it, "You're here." She smiled as Samantha held her tight. Samantha clung to Clara firmly, her head resting in the crook of Clara's neck. Clara held her close closing her eyes a warmth of relief spread quickly over her. She kept Samantha close not wanting to let her go. The Doctor watched the two and smiled but his mind was still whirling with unanswered questions about the pair. Slowly Samantha let go and looked back up and them. "I'm so glad I found you." She smiled as a happy tear fell astray. The Doctor moved to dab it away, but Samantha moved back slightly and he stopped. Confusion spread over The Doctor and Clara's faces. Samantha moved to touch The Doctors chest and went she felt a solid body she scooted forward and wrapped her arms around his neck hugging him. The Doctor slightly hesitant but returned her hug. "What was that all about?" He asked after Samantha had let go and they all stood up.
"I was walking around and I thought I saw you so I ran to give you a hug and fell to the floor, you were a hologram." Samantha explained some sadness clear in her voice. The Doctor thought about this for a while before stating. "We need to get out of here." Clara silently nodded in agreement.
Samantha caught hold of Clara's hand as the left the room out into the hallway. Clara looked at Samantha and tried to give her a reassuring smile. Samantha tried to return one. The Doctor pulled out his sonic screwdriver, "I thought it didn't do wood?" Clara asked furrowing her brow.
"It doesn't." The Doctor replied. "But I'm hoping that it will lock onto the TARDIS signal and will be able to lead us out of here." He replied confidently pointing the sonic screwdriver forward. They began to walk down the hallway hearing a low beep from the sonic gesturing to them that they were headed in the right direction. They walked past a door and The Doctor stopped just short of the next one. "Did you feel that?" He commented looking at Samantha and Clara.
"Yeah, it just got colder didn't it?" Clara answered back. The Doctor walked forwards toward the door when Samantha spoke up.
"No, no we can't go in there!" Her worried words escaped her lips almost faster than she could say them. The Doctor and Clara both looked at her scared and fragile face. It was The Doctor who spoke first. "Why not?" He hesitated.
"Because we just can't." Samantha replied tears prickling in her eyes and small ones beginning to fall. Clara gently grasped her other hand and watching her glassy eyes asked "What did you see in there?" Samantha tightly pressed her lips together. She looked to The Doctor then back at Clara again. "It was you..." She looked at Clara before her face contorted into anguish and tears openly fell "...dead." Clara looked at her for no longer than a second before enveloping her into a hug, holding her tight as she felt Samantha body shudder and tremble as she sobbed. "Hey, hey I'm here." Clara said comfortingly as she pulled back and placed her hands on Samantha's face making her look at her. "Here, I'm right here."
Samantha sniffed and nodded. Clara pushed back her hair out of her face and gave her another hug. Glancing at The Doctor over her shoulder Clara gave him a pleading look. He took this as needing to leave this place fast.
Walking down the hallway again they rounded a long bend, the sonic screw driver began to beep more rapidly. When they got around the corner they were at the top on the long staircase with the front door in sight the walls that separated them no longer stood. The Doctor heard Clara sigh in relief and smiled. They all but ran down the large staircase. They got to the large front door, and best as he could The Doctor threw it open. An icy wind stuck them all and whipped at their bodies as they ran down the porch. Stopping briefly The Doctor looked up, Clara and Samantha followed his glance skywards. Dark sinister clouds blanketed the sky threatening them with thunderous rain. The waves crashed violently on the shore creating loud roars. Samantha and Clara continued to look at the sky whilst The Doctor gaze shifted searching for the TARDIS. Once he spotted it he tugged at Clara's hand which he hadn't realised he was holding, in turn Clara lightly pulled at Samanthas hand motioning to where the TARDIS was. As they began making their way to the TARDIS the wind picked up and rain fell. Rain rapidly became torrential downpour and within seconds they were all soaked to the bone. The Doctor let go of Clara's hand to run ahead 400 or so meters to the TARDIS and get the doors open. His wet hair flopped in and out of his vision in time with his lanky strides. He reached the door and brushed his hand over his head to get his hair out of the way. The TARDIS seemed to know The Doctor was in a rush because once she had confirmed it was him she immediately open the door. Turning around The Doctor saw Clara and Samantha running towards him. Their cold wet hair stung their faces when they ran. Samantha's grip on Clara's hand tighten as she squinted slightly trying to shield her eyes from the harsh raindrops. Clara could see the light of the TARDIS up ahead glow and The Doctors silhouette in the doorway. "Nearly there." Clara yelled above the sound of the rain pelting them. Samantha nodded absently when she heard something that was between a hum and a growl. Startled she opened her eyes wide and searched for the source of the sound. Glancing around in the near darkness she slowed her pace. Clara looked back at her and squeezed her hand. "Come on." Clara called out. Just as Samantha turned something gold gleamed in her line of vision. It was a pair of eyes. The wolf's eyes. The wolf from the forest. Her jaw dropped as Clara tugged at her arm harder. Time slowed for Samantha as she watch the golden eyes glisten and blink. Clara turned and glanced in the direction Samantha was looking. Finally catching what Samantha was fixated on her muscles momentarily stiffened. The wolfs eyes flashed at Clara and she shivered. "Let's go." She said firmly. Samantha broke her gaze and began running, the TARDIS was closer than she thought. The Doctor peered in to the darkness trying to see what Clara and Samantha were looking at. Noticing the change in Clara's body language it suggested to him that whatever it was wasn't good. Clara and Samantha safely made there way into the TARDIS and The Doctor closed the door behind them.
"Did you see that?" Samantha asked Clara her voice quivering from the cold as her wet clothes chilled her. Clara looked at Samantha and nodded.
"See what?" The Doctor asked as he shifted around the console changing the temperature making it warmer.
"The wolf, from the forest." Clara answered rubbing her arms. The rain soaked clothes clung to her small frame. The Doctor looked at Clara confused for a while "How?" He muttered Clara shrugged unsure if he wanted an answer or not, not that she could give a logical one . Then stated matter of factually, "You two should shower and get warm you don't watch to catch anything." Clara nodded and looked back at Samantha who agreed.
After showering separately and changing into warm clothes they both made their way back to the console room. The Doctor in their absence had also gone and gotten changed, though what he wore was very close to what he was in before. Where as Clara and Samantha were both in their pyjamas. Samantha went around the console and sat on the couch while Clara went and stood by The Doctor. "So any idea how it was the wolf from the forest?" Clara asked him leaning slightly on the console.
"Are you sure it was the same wolf?" The Doctor directed at Samantha. Turning to look at them certainty clear in her voice, "It was the same pair of eyes." She replied. Looking back to Clara The Doctor shook his head. "No idea." Silence filled the console room all that could be heard was a soft humming from the TARDIS until Samantha yawned. The sound was louder than she expected so she clamped her hand over her mouth. Clara stifled a laugh and The Doctor chuckled. Clara walked over to Samantha and held out her hand, "Come on I think you need to get some sleep." Samantha playfully pouted. "Wouldn't you say Doctor?" Clara asked smiling. "Oh, most definitely." He replied with a smirk. Samantha sighed before taking Clara hand. Walking past The Doctor Samantha stopped, "Goodnight Doctor." She said standing on her tippy toes to give him a hug. The Doctor gladly returned her hug. "Goodnight Samantha." Clara was walking Samantha to her room when she looked up at her "How come you're not tired?" Samantha asked in-between another yawn.
Clara laughed, "I'm tired, just not as tired as you." she smiled. When they reached her room Samantha gave Clara a goodnight hug. "Sleep well." Clara said before letting go.
"You too." Samantha smiled before going into her room and Clara made her way back to the console room. Samantha tossed back the covers and hopped into bed. Yawning again she let her head fall on the pillow and she was asleep within minutes.
Clara re-entered the console room and saw The Doctor sitting on the couch as she walked up the stairs.
Clara walked around the console and sat next to him. "Do you think she'll be okay?" She asked.
"Samantha?" He questioned.
"Yeah."
"She's strong." "And stubborn." He smiled. "She'll get through." They sat in silence for a while until Clara broke it,
"So where are?"
"Space." Clara looked at him till he looked at her and saw the 'are you serious' look on her face. "Close to Earth, regularish time." He replied smiling. Clara returned his smile shaking her head slightly. Clara let out a full yawn and The Doctor chuckled. "I think it's time you went to bed to miss Clara." He said knowingly. Clara half groaned half grunted and lay her head on the back of the couch. "Come on." He said holding his hand out offering to help her up.
"Fine." She mumbled. She took his hand as he hoisted her off the couch she then leaned up and enclosed her arms around his neck giving him a hug. The Doctor was slightly taken aback but returned her hug wrapping his arms above her waist. Clara was surprised but greatful for The Doctor returning the hug. "Goodnight Doctor." She said letting go.
"Goodnight Clara." He smiled and watched her walk down the stairs and leave the console room.
Walking down the TARDIS corridor Clara yawned, maybe she was more tired than she thought. Passing Samanthas door she heard soft mumbling. Furrowing her brow she slowly opened the door and frowned at what she saw. Samantha was tossing and turning in her sheets her face scrunched in what looked like pain and confusion. Walking closer to Samantha, Clara could partly distinguish what she was saying.
"I'm lost...Clara...Doctor...lost.."
Clara's heart went out to her knowing the feeling of being lost and how scary it is. Clara went to Samanthas side and gently shook her shoulder till she woke up. Samantha gasped as she woke up, looking around and seeing Clara she sat up slowly. Clara sat on the edge of her bed and gave her a sympathetic look. "What were you dreaming of?" Clara asked softly even she was sure she knew.
"Being lost." Samantha replied in a small voice.
"Want me to tell you a story that my mum told me when I was little?" Clara inquired. Samantha slightly hesitant nodded. "It doesn't matter where you are, in the jungle or the desert or on the moon. However lost you may feel, you'll never really be lost. Not really. Because I will always be here, and I will always come and find you. Every single time." Clara informed her. "The Doctor and I will always find you." She smiled, "So there is no need to be worried about being lost." Clara finished. Samantha smiled and leaned forward to hug Clara who gladly accepted the embrace. After Samantha let go Clara got off her bed. "Now try get some sleep, I'll see you in the morning." She smiled. Samantha nodded returning the smile.
