Inuzuka Mimi –Right after her 6th birthday before Inuzuka Clan Trip
Learning to henge wasn't so difficult, Mimi decided. Now that she could, she can finally check out the infamous Icha Icha series. After henging into a brown-haired green eyed girl almost identical to her past life, Mimi casually strolled up to the counter with the Icha Icha Paradise series in her hands. Oh boy was it better than any of the smut she remembers from her past life!
One day, she took out the third book in the series while sitting down in the obscure Uchiha training ground 9, waiting for her dad to arrive for training. When he finally did, she forgot her age for a second and absentmindedly asked him, "tou-chan, is this position possible? Can't see how, even with ninja flexibility."
Shisui took one look at the cover of the book she was reading and paled.
"Mimi-chan," he started nervously, "where did you get that book?"
Coming to her senses after pulling her attention away from the book, her heart stopped for a second as she realized that she was only 6 years old and according to overprotective fathers 6 year olds should NOT be reading smut. And then…a mischievous thought planted itself in her head.
"Well tou-chan, there's this cool looking ninja with a mask and grey hair that is always reading this book wandering around the village! He doesn't bump into anything even with his nose in the book and with only one eye! He is always reading this series though so I was curious," Mimi answered him with a beaming smile, her eyes wide and innocent looking.
Shisui's face darkened and he momentarily forgot the book in her hands, only focused on who he now believed to be the reason behind the attempt on his daughter's innocent mind.
"Itachi will be taking care of your training today Mimi, get started on your katas. Your tou-chan has something he needs to take care of."
Later on in what would become a common sight around the village in the years to come, Hatake Kakashi was sprinting through the village, his precious book clutched to his chest with an irate Uchiha Shisui chasing after him, threatening to burn his books. Maito Gai trailed close after them, shouting as usual.
"I will help you cleanse my 'hip and cool' Eternal Rival Uchiha-san or I will run backwards around this village 500 times on my hands! Let us be guided into capturing him using our FLAMES OF YOUTH! YOSH!"
What did I do to deserve this? Thought the nervous Hatake, vowing to protect his books at all costs.
Kimimaro was not back to his full strength after such a rough treatment so our pace back to the village was slow and it took us several weeks to get there. This allowed me more time to bond with Kimimaro and to figure him out. There was a closeness there that came from comforting him and cleaning up after his vomit on especially difficult days but we still didn't know much about each other.
"So, Kimi-nii, what do you like to do for fun?" I asked him. Shiromaru was asleep in my arms and he huffed at the sound of my voice.
Kimimaro turned to me with a blank stare, already used to how informal I could be and no longer getting flustered. I miss that.
"Back in the Kaguya compound…I wasn't really allowed to do much."
Crap, now I felt bad, remembering how he would be locked up by his own clan. I looked down, slightly ashamed at dredging up those memories.
"But…there was this one girl. She found the cage where I was locked up one day. Since then, she would bring me snacks and sweets. She started to learn flower arranging and then she would bring me different flowers and tell me their meanings. We would then compete on who has the best flower arrangement skills and she always liked mine more. "
I looked at him when he finished speaking and he had a gentle smile on his face as he reflected. He then turned to look at me and smiled reassuringly. I felt slightly relieved and decided to just chatter on.
"Flower arranging is very fun! We started learning that in my second month of Kunoichi classes though I'm probably behind by now…" I trailed off. I started to worry as I thought about the things I would be missing in the kunoichi classes. They were about to start tea ceremony before I left and while I thankfully knew the basics (another benefit of reincarnation) every region had their own version so I didn't know the Konoha version. We were also supposed to get into intermediate flower arranging techniques. The introduction just had us recognizing different plants and flowers and learning their uses and meanings. Intermediate is the actual arranging part and advanced would be when we would start incorporating undetectable poisons in them.
"Hey, I know! Maybe you can teach me what you know about flowers arrangements? I'm sure the ones you make are very pretty."
"I would be honored, Mimi-san," he responded with a pleased look on his face before his normal blank expression took over again.
Satisfied, I ran up to Hana, who was taking point in our little group, jostling Shiromaru who woke up with a grumpy yip. Shisui was in the rear, walking lazily and twirling a kunai in one hand, an intimidation tactic that is supposed to ward off bandits (though it doesn't always work as evident by the ambush several weeks ago).
"Hana-nee, I want Shiromaru to learn the human tongue, do you think oba-chan will allow Kiromaru to teach him?"
The reason why most Inuzuka ninken don't know how to speak the human language is because it involves a year of separation between the Inuzuka and his/her companion. They still get together, of course, but it puts them behind a year in the Inuzuka clan style joint training. If Tsume allows, Shiromaru would have to follow along with her and Kiromaru and the two ninken would go off on their own fairly often. Tsume would directly train Shiromaru in our clan's taijutsu and I would continue to practice as if I had a companion but there would be a brief readjustment period when we would begin to fight together again.
"I don't see why not," she shrugs, "okaasan would be happy because the younger the pup, the better and the least it would affect the bond."
Sometimes, if an Inuzuka decided to teach their ninken the human tongue when the pup was older, it would run the risk of diluting the bond between human and ninken. Mostly because it is more difficult for the ninken to learn the older they are, like with languages, they don't pick up as quickly and it can sometimes result in some resentment since it feels a bit forced. Then there's the fact that if the Inuzuka is a chuunin or higher, it grounds them in the village.
So, yeah. The earlier the better.
I had never felt so happy to be finally home. It was a few hours before sunset when I sprinted to the large gates as soon as they came in sight, Shiromaru running alongside me. With a flare of Shisui's chakra, the gate guards simply let us through, though they looked at Kimimaro suspiciously. Shisui signed a few things to them (I have never seen these guards before so I guess Izumo and Kotetsu haven't been assigned gate duty yet…) and then turned back to the rest of us.
"Well, I have to report straight to the Hokage with Kimi-kun here so this is where I leave you. It's been fun," he told us, ruffling my hair. I huffed at him before giving Kimimaro a quick hug and waving them off. I then turned to Hana.
"Hana-nee, can you please take Shiromaru back to the clan compound? I have to go visit a friend."
She just smiled and nodded before scooping up Shiromaru who looked at me sadly. It took everything I had in me to turn away from his literal puppy eyes. He needs to be checked by the vet, as all ninken are whenever they are return from being outside of the village and I promised Naruto I would find him straight away when I returned. And I don't break my promises.
I weaved my way through the village, dodging civilians and making my way through the slightly more worn side of the village. I finally reached Naruto's rundown apartment building and knocked on his door. I sagged a little bit when there was no answer but I knocked on his door again and it was flung open. The blue eyed chibi looked at me in disbelief for a second before I was promptly knocked over when he glomped me.
"MIMI-CHAN!"
I patted his head with my arm twisted awkwardly, my other arm bracing me from lying completely flat from where I was sprawled on the floor with Naruto on top of me. My neck was feeling a little damp from where his face was buried and I could hear soft sniffles muffled against it.
"Missed you, too, Naruto," I smiled softly and continued to pat his head. Eventually he got off of me and we relocated to the worn sofa in his apartment. Naruto wouldn't let go of my hand, as if he was afraid I would disappear again and I felt a slight twinge of regret as I realized that even with Kiba looking out for him, he probably felt very alone as I had taken looking after him very seriously. He had lost a bit of the weight he had gained with my mothering and I silently vowed to myself to make sure to teach him how to look after himself in my absence though I had no plans on leaving him for such an extended time again.
"So Mimi-chan, tell me, tell me, how was your trip? Did you see any foreign ninja? Did you rescue any princesses?" Naruto spoke rapidly and looked at me eagerly, anticipating that I would regale him with grand adventures. I felt a slight twinge when he asked me about foreign ninja and was briefly brought back to the desolation I felt with my first kill but quickly shook it off and told him all about my adventures, exaggerating a bit and leaving obviously sensitive information out due to the ANBU presence I felt in the tree outside. The ANBU didn't really hide their chakra, as I think they are supposed to be a deterrent for other ninja and so I have become somewhat familiar with the signatures of the guard rotation around Naruto. The one outside right now felt very staticy. This guard is the one who I usually can't get much of a read on.
Well, Deidara does look kind of girly and is a bit bratty so it wouldn't be too farfetched for him to be a princess…
"…and so Kimimaro-nii is with Shisui-san now at Hokage Tower to see if he can stay in the village. I hope he gets to stay cause I told him all about you since you're my best friend and he can't wait to meet you and, and he promised to play ninja with us," I wrapped up my tale, having enthusiastically acted out scenes as best I could with Naruto still clutching on to my hand.
I turned my attention back to him and noted the wide eyed scared look on his face, his hand tightening his grip on mine.
"But, but, what if he doesn't like me? Then you won't like me anymore and, and you won't be my best friend anymore and then you'll treat me like the other villagers!" Naruto got more and more frantic with each fear, his grip on my hand almost unbearable. Oh…oh no I thought he was over this already, I shouldn't have left for so long!
"Naruto," I started firmly, "you are my best friend and nothing will change that."
I debated with myself internally. I had been teaching Naruto how to read and write, it seemed to be his greatest weakness when it came to learning on top of his teachers ignoring him. I had also been tutoring him in everything we were learning in school and then some. This had him in the middle of the class instead of dead last and I knew he would be a lot higher if not for the teachers purposefully failing him and holding him back. I knew this also meant that he would likely pass the exam on his first try as opposed to his third like in the manga (which made no sense whatsoever if he graduated with others his age, how he was even allowed to take the test early as dead last I will never know) so I had been encouraging him to wait out the full term of our education with declaring my own graduation intentions.
That's another thing that is different from the manga and anime. Apparently, in war time, the graduation age is between 9 and 13 with the exception of prodigies. If a student isn't able to pass the genin exam for their hitai ate by age 13, they were given civilian jobs in the village that have high interaction with ninjas (such as an exclusive ninja bar). Those that waited until 13 that failed the second part of the exam given by their jounin sensei were sent to the genin corps instead of back to the academy. In order to take the exam before your class year, if not a prodigy, you had to request a nomination from a teacher.
In peace time, the graduation ages are drastically different, between 13 and 17. This means that if they graduate from the academy based on their class year like in the story, the characters from Naruto will be teenagers instead of young children. It completely blew my mind when I entered the academy and this was revealed during the orientation. It also severely screwed with any known timelines based on ages so I have to go by events (and even that is screwed up). This also means that I currently have no idea when the Uchiha massacre is supposed to occur. I still freak out over it on occasion.
I have no idea how Kishimoto came up with this story. I don't know if it was in a dream, day dream, a memory (who's to say he wasn't reborn into my universe?). What I also don't know is why he made these ninja so young. The only reason I could think of is to appeal to a younger audience.
Anyway, if Naruto does graduates with me on his first (and final) try then that the whole scene with Mizuki-sensei would be completely unnecessary and that left up in the air when he would find out about the Kyuubi.
So to tell Naruto or not? I didn't want to just drop such controversial news and I figured I could supplement it with something that would be considered awesome. Either way this could put Naruto in more danger and then there was the ANBU that was listening in to our conversation. The container of the Kyuubi was supposed to be an S-class secret but technically I knew about it through other means and unless outright told wouldn't have known it was an S-class secret and so I could escape the death penalty on that technicality. The unknown variable is that ANBU, whether or not he would interfere during my revelations.
"Naruto…do you know how the Fourth Hokage died the night you were born protecting the village from the Kyuubi attack?" I figured that was a vague enough start that would make the ANBU anxious but not enough to interfere.
Naruto nodded his head and looked at me questioningly.
"Well, you kind of remind the villagers of that night because it is your birthday," it was a slight cop out, I knew but felt immediately more comfortable when the ANBU in the shadows relaxed, his chakra more of a calm hum as opposed to the frantic crackling from earlier.
"But that's not fair!" Naruto exclaimed childishly. I agreed wholeheartedly with him and then dropped the bomb.
"It isn't because you are a hero because the Fourth saved the village by sealing the Kyuubi inside of you," I said rapidly, giving the ANBU no time to interrupt or stop me. I could sense the shock ripple through his chakra and could hear the slightly faint rustling as he shifted uncomfortably.
Naruto looked at me wide eyed and I rushed to reassure him.
"The Hokage trusted you to protect the village above all other babies. He knew that you could hold the Kyuubi, maybe even become friends with him! It is a special mission that he gave you the minute you were born. Unfortunately, he died before he could tell the villagers why he trusted you so much so they don't understand and are scared and stupid. They don't hate you Naruto, they just hate what is sealed inside you."
"So...I have a special mission?"
I let out a sigh of relief; he seemed to be taking the news rather well. This was definitely a better way for him to find out as opposed to such a highly tense situation.
"Yes. I figured it all out by listening in with my special hearing when people would talk about the night of the attack. Also, ninja don't really think much of children." Which is true and very stupid since there are child prodigies. I overhead a couple of drunk ninjas on the anniversary of the attack talking about how crazy they thought the Hokage was for even attempting to convince them that the "kyuubi-brat" could be a hero. It justified my knowledge without having to explain that I was very much aware of his status because of my previous life and that I remembered the Hokage's speech.
"You are so smart Mimi-chan! So cool!"
I blushed at his praise and waved it off, turning my head and not looking at him again until my cheeks cooled down.
I was happy with his reaction. Naruto is actually really mature for his age; I really think he is a true prodigy and the neglect and bias is really what held him back in cannon. Granted, he was still very childish in personality but his comprehension was way above normal children his age.
"I did some reading and a container of a tailed-beast, that is what they call creatures like the Kyuubi, is called a jinchuuriki."
Naruto scrunched up his face.
"But how did the Yondaime know that I would make a good jin..jinchu..jinchiki?"
"Jinchuuriki," I corrected him.
"He trusted you most because he is your tou-chan and the previous jinchuuriki is your kaa-san, Uzumaki Kushina."
I again rushed my way through that information and heard the ANBU break protocol and inhale sharply. He was probably going to keel over before this little information session was over.
"THE FOURTH HOKAGE IS MY DAD!?"
Naruto jumped around excitedly and my hand felt slightly cold when he finally released it in his excitement.
"Well, there are rumors that they were together at the time though they were never confirmed. And according to my research, the seal on a female jinchuuriki can weaken during childbirth, so normally the jinchuuriki are discouraged from relationships in other villages. You also have an uncanny resemblance to the Yondaime. It isn't definite but I'm surprised more people haven't put it together."
I really was. It made no sense that the kid almost identical to Namikaze Minato could never be connected to the man himself. The last name Uzumaki could be explained away as a name honorably granted in remembrance but his appearance? His vast chakra reserves not including the kyuubi chakra? His well-known love for ramen shared by Kushina? All things that connect him directly to his parents and that is even before he becomes a ninja and learns their techniques.
I sat back and let Naruto ramble on and on about how cool his parents were and calmed him down when he took a breath.
"You can't tell anyone."
Naruto looked at me, indignant.
"Why not? If we told the villagers that the fourth Hokage is my dad then maybe they will like me more."
"Naruto," I started sternly, "there is a reason that if it's true, it's a secret. The Yondaime was known as the Yellow Flash. He had a 'flee on sight' order and had a lot of enemies in both Iwagakure and Kumogakure. If it got out that he had a child, that child would have the largest target on his back."
Naruto pouted adorably and crossed him arms.
"Then I'll just have to get stronger so that no one can beat me, dattebayo!"
"I'll get strong, too. I'll always have your back, Naruto."
At my words, Naruto got a bit teary and promptly glomped me again.
"And I'll always have your back, Mimi-chan."
After a bit more mindless less serious chatter, Naruto jumped up.
"I'm late! Come on Mimi-chan, we need to go meet my new friend!"
New friend? Naruto grabbed my hand dragged me out the door, only stopping briefly to lock it. Our new ANBU shadow followed, this one felt like a boiling pot of water, the staticy one having switched out after all the revelations.
"Naru-kun, who's your new friend?" I asked as I kept pace slightly behind him, my hand still clutched in his grip.
He turned back to look at me briefly, still running and I gently tugged him out of the way of a civilian, who glared at us as we ran by.
"His name is Uchiha Sasuke. I saved him from some fan girls one day and we've been friends since then. The fan girls are scared of me so they stay away."
He spoke matter of factly about the fear the fan girls had of him which is something that would have upset him before. This made me feel like I definitely made the right decision in telling Naruto about the Kyuubi.
Before I could finish processing the thought though it hit me.
"Uchiha…Sasuke?"
How in the world did that happen? I was happy for Naruto making a new friend but what were the odds that it would be Sasuke?
"Yeah," Naruto said and then stopped. It was only my ninja reflexes that kept me from barreling right into him.
"Don't tell me you're his fan girl, too!" Naruto shouted in my face.
I gave him a grossed-out look, distant cousins or not we were related. Though Naruto didn't know that.
"Uh, no. He just seemed a bit standoffish, most Uchiha are snobs, you know?"
"Shisui-nii isn't," he pointed out.
"True."
With that he took off again and finally we stopped in front of a small dango stand close to the Uchiha compound. Standing in front of it was Itachi with a restless onyx eyed little boy next to him who could only be Sasuke. He was wearing a collared white shirt and dark blue shorts with ninja sandals. It took everything I had in me not to bust out laughing as I noted that he already had the duck-butt hair.
"Itachi-san, Sasuke, this is Inuzuka Mimi, my best friend that I was telling you about. Mimi-chan this is Sasuke-teme and Uchiha Itachi," Naruto introduced us.
"Dobe," Sasuke said in response and was immediately smacked in the head by Itachi.
"Nice to meet you Inuzuka-san," Itachi said with a slight bow which Sasuke echoed and imitated.
"Ah, please, call me Mimi," I replied with my own bow. Itachi and I gave no indication whatsoever that we knew each other.
"Let's go inside, dattebayo!" Naruto said excitedly but before he could pull me inside we were stopped by rustling wind and a hand on my shoulder. I didn't jump at the familiar chakra though Sasuke looked wide-eyed at the person behind me and Naruto jumped about a foot in the air clutching his chest.
"Shisui-nii! You scared me, dattebayo!"
"Wow dobe, I thought you were kidding when you said you knew Shi-nii," said Sasuke, waving by Itachi's side. The kid hasn't detached himself from Itachi at all and I giggled at the sight.
"A ninja needs to always be aware of his surroundings Naru-chan. Mimi, we need to go, I'm sorry but you're going to have to play with your friends some other time."
Shisui picked me up and I could only wave quickly at Naruto before Shisui flickered us away. We ended up at the Hokage's office and I started to feel a bit of dread at the familiar chakra on the other side of the door. Shisui knocked sharply three times and we were prompted to enter the office.
Sure enough, there was an ANBU with a wolf mask standing in front of the Sandaime's desk who turned to look at us as we entered. The Hokage had a grave look at his face and Shisui tightened his arms around me, having not set me down just yet. The Hokage nodded at Shisui and he squeezed me real quick before placing me in front of the desk. He stood close to me and glared at the ANBU in the wolf mask.
"Mimi-chan," started the Hokage, "Wolf ANBU has informed me that you have told Naruto some very sensitive information."
I knew it. I looked at him confused, though I knew exactly what he was referring to.
"You mean about who his parents might be?" I asked, though I knew it was way more than that.
The Hokage cleared his throat and took another puff from his pipe.
"I mean how you divulged an S-Class secret to a jinchuuriki."
"Hey, Naru-chan is very loyal to the village, just because he's a jinchuuriki doesn't mean he's going to go blabbing about it!" I responded indignantly. I knew he didn't mean it that way but I was walking a very delicate line here and messing up could end up with a trip down to T&I or death.
"That is not what I meant," he said delicately," I'm talking about how you told Naruto about the Kyuubi which is an S-Class village secret. How did you even find out about it?"
I crossed my arms defensively and huffed.
"Well I didn't know it was an S-Class secret! I thought the villagers were just being meaner by not allowing Naruto to know why they stupidly hated him so much. I heard a couple of drunken shinobi talking about it during the Kyuubi festival."
The Hokage's lips tightened around his pipe.
"Wolf, I need you to bring me Uzumaki Naruto."
The ANBU nodded once before flickering off.
"We will wait until Naruto gets here before continuing," the Hokage declared.
Shisui pulled me back into him and placed both hands on my shoulders. I stood there, desperately hoping that I hadn't screwed everything up so very completely.
A few minutes later the ANBU was back and dropped Naruto in front of the Hokage.
"Hey, what's going on Jiji?" Naruto jumped up and dusted himself off before taking in the sight of Shisui and me.
"Naruto-kun, I have been informed that Mimi has told you a few things," started the Hokage.
"She's not in trouble, is she!?"
The Hokage sighed and shook his head.
"Naruto-kun, your jinchuuriki status is an S-Class secret. Mimi didn't know, she figured it out so she won't be punished for it. I brought you here because I need both of you to know how very important it is that you don't tell just anyone about the Kyuubi. Now that Mimi knows that it is an S-Class secret I can hold her accountable for who she tells but Naruto, you need to think very carefully about who you decide to tell about this.
Another thing is about your parent," the Sandaime inhaled deeply before continuing, "yes, you are the child of Namikaze Minato and Uzumaki Kushina. Mimi was right to tell you that it needs to remain a secret though. When you are a Jounin you can shout it from the rooftops and I will confirm it but until then, when you can protect yourself, it needs to be known only to those who already do."
"Jounin!? But that's so far away!" Naruto complained.
"Naruto!" Shisui scolded.
"Naruto, they won't just go after you. They will go after everyone you care about, Mimi included."
This seemed to stop him short.
"Then I'll become strong enough to protect my precious people, dattebayo!" Naruto declared.
Ok then, guess Haku wasn't really necessary for him to figure out his nindo. I wanted Naruto to come up with it on his own though I had been dropping hints here and there but I guess that Hokage kind of just handed it to him unintentionally. This will definitely change the Wave mission, if we even still end up on it.
The Hokage's features softened and then he chuckled.
"I'm sure you both will become very strong ninja. It is getting very late, you should get home. Dismissed."
The ANBU that had silently been standing in the corner disappeared into nothingness. Shisui and I bowed at the Hokage and we walked Naruto home. On the way back to the Inuzuka compound, Shisui questioned me.
"Mimi, why did you think it was a good idea to reveal such vital information to Naruto? He is not nearly as mature as you," he started vaguely. After all, you never know who is listening so he couldn't outright say that I had been an adult once before and should know better than to burden a child. But what he seemed to forget is that yes, I was an adult before but now I am a child.
"He needed to know, Shisui-nii. It was destroying him, not knowing and it isn't fair to keep him in the dark about something that affects him so deeply."
Shisui sighed at then and smiled slightly before ruffling my hair.
"Meh, what about Kimi-nii? Does he get to stay?" I asked, remembering our white haired traveling companion.
"Hai, the Hokage will grant him a temporary visa after a month stay in T&I and I will be sponsoring him for a year after that. He has no ties to any village or clan so that was taken into consideration."
I beamed, relieved as that had been in the back of my mind this whole time. Take that, Orochimaru!
Shisui dropped me off and with a brief wave, flickered off. I was immediately knocked over by Kiba when I entered our home.
"Tadaima," I said quietly.
"Okaeri," he replied happily.
It's good to finally be home.
A/N: 4,710 Words, without the Omake! :D
I hope this makes up for the 3 day delay. I was completely out of it last weekend on pain medication that the doctor prescribed. I was in a car accident a couple of weeks ago and wasn't able to see a doctor until last Friday so I had no idea the pain meds would make me so loopy! .
Also, I am planning a Q&A Session to be included in the next update. PM me and ask me about any decisions I've made in the story so far. I won't reveal anything that might be a spoiler but if it doesn't spoil the story then I will be more than happy to tell you. I will keep taking questions until the actual update, not making any promises when it will be because I need to be very happy with this next chapter since it will be very important and will possibly slingshot us into a couple of time jumps. The next few chapters will jump a few times to get us into cannon but it is very important for this story to develop the relationship between Naruto, Mimi and Sasuke, whether they end up on the same team or not so I'm not sure how it's going to work out quite yet.
Thank you all so much for reading, following and your favorites!
EverRose808 came up with the idea for the omake and I hope you liked it even though I tweaked a few things ;)
Cellularranger brought up to me that Kimimaro's illness seemed similar to Chediak-Higashi syndrome. Go ahead and check it out, I feel like the conditions can be similar but the causes and treatment are different. Mimi wouldn't know what this is so it won't be brought up in the story but awareness of any illness is always important!
As always, special thanks to my reviewers: EverRose808, MEleeSmasher, JBebe, RiverOfTheWolf, Petalclaw's PatriceBethPorter, lovinurbuks, 4everfictional, DarkDust27, zeichnerinaga, duchessliz, Cellularranger and guests!
