Author's note: kanai-anzen omamori- charm for health and illnesses (no, I have no idea why I chose this charm XD)

Born For You

Chapter 10

"Twins?" Gokudera asked, green eyes wide.

Lambo opened his mouth, "But Takeshi-shi isn't- he's not- is he?"

"He's one hundred percent human, we've done tests on him as he grew up." Reborn assured.

"Oh." The youngest guardian seemed stunned, "Because you know, if he wasn't human, then that would make a lot of sense too, just saying."

"But how could Professor Yamamoto give birth to a human and erm-" The bomber gave a sideways glance to his boss, "And a sort of non-human? Did the experiment mutate or something?"

"Verde's still looking into it but he already has a theory going that when Midoriko injected herself with the experiment, she was already pregnant. And since the zygote was a fast-paced evolution it might have affected her child." Reborn said and Lambo gave him a frown.

"So, what you're saying is Takeshi Vongola is one hundred percent human and…" The lightning guardian hesitated, "…And is the real son of the Yamamotos?"

"Yes." The hitman nodded

"Then how did he get here?"

"We're suspecting the betrayal of one of Professor Midoriko's subordinate who served as the midwife, led her to steal one of the babies and bring him to Italy." Reborn explained with crossed arms. "She may have panicked when she saw the twins and grabbed one at random and ran off with him. She fled to Italy and did tests but to her horror, she brought a baby that was a hundred percent human. Realizing this, she abandoned him and that was how Takeshi Vongola came to be one of us."

Reborn looked at the young boss to gauge his expression and as expected the brunet was pale with this new information. "Don't do something stupid like take them as one person. The other is human while the other was an invention created by the Vongola. They may look the same but they grew up differently. Takeshi Vongola is nothing like Takeshi Yamamoto."

Tsuna looked up but then looked at his sheets, pained, "How did this happen? Why is there a person like that with that face?" He gripped the sheets of his bed tightly. Lambo and Gokudera exchanged looks.

Reborn pursed his lips, "It looks you need some time alone. We'll leave you to gather your thoughts, Tsuna." He turned to the guardians who looked reluctant. "Let's go." He turned towards the door with the two guardians following suit.

But then Gokudera hesitated and turned to the young Vongola boss who was shaking in his bed. He pursed his lips. Reborn and Lambo paused and turned to see what the bomber was about to do… or say.

Even Tsuna looked up.

"You told me once," Gokudera began, "That you think that Takeshi Vongola was just a person who didn't know how to make friends and I was relieved. Because none of us ever thought the way you did and the fact that you thought about him like that made me think that maybe with you as our boss, maybe we'd be…" He hesitated, "Maybe we'd be better guardians with stronger bonds, like the first generation."

Reborn tilted his hat and Lambo looked at Gokudera and then Tsuna.

"I still think that." The guardian said firmly, "And I know it's hard, and I know you lost someone important and I get that." He said looking straight into Tsuna's eyes, "But you have to listen to Reborn-san, Takeshi Vongola is another person, an entirely different person and I'm sorry but Takeshi Yamamoto is dead. And we need you to see that and we need you to focus on us, your guardians, on Takeshi Vongola and not on Takeshi Yamamoto because he's gone but we're not."

Lambo nodded at that and Gokudera took a deep breath.

"We'll protect you with our lives but it would be good too, if you protected our futures instead of taking revenge on your past." Gokudera bowed stiffly at Tsuna's wide-eyed stare, "Thank you for listening and I'm sorry for the disrespect." With that he fast walked towards the door and to the exit. Lambo looked stunned at the fast disappearance before following suit and Reborn stepped out too, closing the door behind them.

"You were so cool back there, Gokudera-shi." Lambo said with a teasing tilt to his lips and the older guardian growled.

"Shut up."

Reborn smirked and left the two to bicker amongst themselves.

He just hoped that whatever he and Gokudera said got through to the young Vongola.

Tsuna hugged his blanketed knees against his chest and buried his face on them, eyes tightly closed. He understood where Gokudera was coming from, knew that the reason why they didn't mention this sudden Yamamoto-look-alike before was because they had his best interest at heart.

The brunet closed his eyes and in his mind, a Yamamoto dressed in a suit with a sword in hand and looking at him without recognition flashed before his eyes. He dug the heel of his palm against his forehead and let out a low whine of pain.

To see someone who looked so much like his best friend but be unable to reach out to him and knowing deep in your heart that this wasn't him but wishing so much that it was-

The young Vongola let out another pained whine, collapsing on the bed and curling against himself as though to abate the pain. His chest felt heavy and his eyes burned with tears he refused to shed only because he'd shed so many already. His hands formed fists and he punched the soft mattress all the while muttering it's not fair, it's not fair, it's not fair-

There were a lot of things that wasn't fair with this. It wasn't fair how someone so good, so wonderful like Yamamoto was taken from them and Tsuna was spared. It wasn't fair that Tsuyoshi was left alone in a house meant to shelter a family, all by himself not knowing that he had two sons, the other one dead and the other one a hitman in a foreign country. It wasn't fair that this new guardian had to be a twin that looked so much like Yamamoto but was so different from him.

It wasn't fair that the hitman was the one who was human and it was his Yamamoto who wasn't and was therefore hunted down and killed because of him.

The brunet turned to his side, his extended hand accidentally hitting the side table which rattled and made him grunt in pain. The small box at the edge felt to the ground and the brunet immediately sat up and leaned down to pick it up, his heartbeat doubling when he saw that it was the small box Yamamoto had carried to his death and was entrusted to him by his father.

But then teary brown eyes narrowed when he noticed that the small box fell open and whatever the content was inside had been thrown out. He reached out his shaking fingertips, picking the box up and the object that fell out, barely bigger than his palm. Tsuna felt his heart stop in his chest when he took a closer look at it, turning it over in his hand.

It was a kanai-anzen omamori.

The very same charm he'd gotten for Yamamoto to give for his birthday. After the older teen had- had died, he hadn't bothered looking for it, because what was the point? The person he was going to give it to was gone, it couldn't protect Yamamoto anymore.

But apparently Yamamoto found it. Maybe during that time he'd rescued Tsuna from Bell and Mammon, he saw it and managed to put two and two together. He saw it and kept it and even though Tusna was shouting at him, hating him, cursing him, he kept it in his pocket, right until he died.

The breath in Tsuna's throat caught and his heart felt like it was constricting, his eyes blurring and burning as tears rolled down his eyes. His hands were shaking as he stared at the charm that Yamamoto had kept with him even as he laid in the muddy ground of the park, staring up at the sky, bloody and dying.

A choked sound came out of his lips and he was making pained hitching sounds as he grasped this one, solid thing, this tiny little connection he had left of Yamamoto. The pale but still smiling face, the warm, gentle hands…

"I wanted to live my life with you, Tsuna."

"I wanted to make you happy."

And Tsuna let out a pained, choked sound as he buried his face in his hands and cried until there were no more tears left to shed.

Takeshi Vongola stretched his arms with a grunt as he walked down the hallways. His arms were bandaged and his recently acquired injury on his chin had been dealt with. He was getting good at treating himself and the rate he was going, he might even surpass Ryohei at his healing affinity.

Although despite his recently accomplished mission and saving the new boss of the family, the rain guardian still had to stand guard and do some rounds around the castle before letting himself rest. He wasn't able to completely expound the adrenaline he felt earlier and he was waiting for the jittery feeling in his fingers to subdue, not wanting to go to his room and find himself unable to sleep.

Just as he was passing the room of the new Vongola Heir, he heard a pained whine that made him stop in his tracks and narrow his eyes. He knew Reborn specifically told him not to be seen by the current boss but the hitman would probably make an exception if said new boss was in danger, right?

Nodding to himself, Takeshi flattened himself quietly against the old oak doors and pushed it open with only a small 'squeak'. His eyes darted around the room before landing on a shivering lump on the bed. The windows were closed but the door was not locked.

Mouth set in a line, the guardian entered the room cautiously. The room did not smell like blood or sweat and everything was in place so there was no struggle. Takeshi frowned, if that noise came from the boss then what could have made him make that noise? He stepped closer to the bed, footsteps quiet and breathing controlled as he said, "Boss?"

The shaking lump on the bed froze and when Yamamoto stepped closer, he saw that it was indeed the same person he saved earlier. Sawada Tsunayoshi, a Japanese extracted from Namimori after learning that he was the son of the infamous Sawada Iemitsu, therefore an heir to the Vongola Family.

The older teen's frown deepened when he saw the rumpled suit of the brunet and taking in his messy hair. He reached out a hand when the teen still did not turn to him. "Boss, is something the matter?" He asked in Japanese with only a small lilt of Italian.

That's when Sawada Tsunayoshi chose to turn to him.

The guardian's eyes widened when he saw a pale, young face with teary brown eyes stare at him with so much intensity that he froze in his action and looked right back, not blinking. Amber eyes tracked the tears falling down the other's cheeks with interest and he tilted his head curiously and fight against his sudden speechlessness.

"Are you in pain?"

The younger teen flinched and his brown eyes seem to become guarded as he recognized the guardian who rescued him from before, the one who had Yamamoto's face but was not Yamamoto. He hiccupped painfully and backed up, expression defensive as he croaked out, "I'm fine, leave me alone."

At those words, the guardian remembered where he was and he straightened formally before bowing, "Pardon me, boss. I heard you while I was doing my rounds and I thought you had been attacked or gravely injured."

Brown eyes blinked in surprise at the sudden show in formality and Tsuna sniffed as he asked in a suspicious tone, "You were worried?"

The swordsman frowned, Not exactly. He thought and said so, "I was merely curious with regards to the state of your well-being. I'll be leaving now." He turned abruptly and headed towards the door.

But then a small voice stopped him "Wait."

The guardian paused in his movements and turned back to the brunet who was looking at his face. Takeshi wondered if he forgot to clean a spot of blood somewhere.

"Can you- Will you come here? Just for a sec." Tsuna asked nervously and despite the weird request, the guardian stepped forward without hesitance and kneeled on his boss' bedside. He kept his glance respectfully lowered but then trembling hands reached out and tilted his face upward. The guardian's brows furrowed as he looked into red-rimmed oak colored eyes.

In the slightly dark room, the young boss' face was worryingly pale and the guardian couldn't help but ask, "Are you feeling unwell?" It had been ingrained deep in his psyche to always ask the wellbeing of his boss after all.

The brunet seemed to flinch at his choice of words and the grip on him slackened as the younger teen said, "Can you keep quiet for a minute?"

Takeshi nodded mutely, watching brown eyes search his face with burning intensity. He wondered what this person was thinking, looking at his face like that, as though he was trying to memorize dips of his face, his nose, the shape of his eyes.

Was it some sort of Japanese introduction thing?

And when finally brown eyes met amber ones, a flash of pain went through his boss expression, making him go rigid once again. As though noticing the sudden tension in his shoulder, Tsunayoshi let go of his face with a defeated sigh and a slight hiccup. He looked down, bangs shadowing his eyes.

"That's all, you can go now."

The guardian stood up and stiffly bowed at Tsuna's direction before heading out. He took one last look at this strange person, watching as he buried his face in his hands, before closing the door behind him.

Meanwhile, in one of the secluded mansions in Sicily Italy…

Squalo walked up the red carpet, frowning at the gathered Varia members who were holding a variety of wine and food, looking from him then to Xanxus fearfully. The vice-Captain of the Varia sighed, wondering where the hell did they get such cowardly people and why hadn't they killed them yet? They were damn irritating!

"What news do you have for me, trash?" The disgruntled vice of the Ninth's son, Xanxus, interrupted his thoughts and the silver-haired swordsman frowned, an insult at the tip of his tongue. But the fcat that Xanxus wasn't even throwing around any of the food or wine brought to him foretold of how much in a bad mood he was.

Squalo kneeled, "As you'd expect, they threw a part honoring the brat and someone tried to kill him."

"And?"

He really hated being the bringer of bad news. "He didn't die. He even fought back." And he added, "He is a sky-flame user."

The ground began to tremble and the surrounding men dropped the food and wine they were holding in favor of running around and panicking while Squalo glared into red eyes that seemed murderous as he stood up.

"VOII! Control yourself, damn boss! What would you do if we lose this base too, huh!? Try to think for once!" The silver-head pointed his sword at the scarred Italian and eventually the trembling of the ground ceased when Xanxus closed his eyes. But arm rest of his throne had cracked from how tight he had been gripping.

"Look, just because he had the damn sky flames, doesn't mean anything!" The swordsman said, "We have a lot of allies in the Vongola and some could be easily persuaded because compared to you that brat is nothing! He can't even fight and the only reason he survived was because of the humanoid thing! Which we destroyed by the way!"

Xanxus opened his eyes and gave Squalo a hateful look which was an improvement to the earlier blank look that shook many to their core. "I want that fucking trash killed."

"Yeah, yeah… whatever! Leave it to us!" Squalo said as he turned around, "Just drink your goddamn wine and stop scaring the underlings!"

The self-proclaimed Vongola leaned back and closed his eyes. "Tch."

Reborn sat back on the leather armchair, looking outside with a pensive expression. He had called on the guardians five minutes ago, wanting to discuss with about the recent happenings on the new Vongola boss' supposed welcoming party.

Sure enough, the door opened and Hibari came in. A few minutes later he was followed by Chrome and Mukuro. And in another two minutes, Gokudera came in, arguing with Ryohei in Japanese and Lambo trailing behind them with a bored yawn. That left Takeshi, and he wasn't usually the last one, but then again the rain guardian had just come back from a mission, saved his boss, and knowing him, he'd probably done his usual rounds around the castle before retreating to his room.

A minute later, there was a knock on the wooden door and the young hitman came in with his usual nonchalant expression. That's when Reborn decided to turn to look at the guardians, arms crossed and fedora tilted.

"You didn't do so well in keeping the intruders out." The words were said in a normal tone but Gokudera and Lambo still flinched. "I don't know how you expect to call yourselves strong if you can't even keep one Varia out."

Hibari's eyes narrowed as Mukuro asked, "Oya, could it be we overlooked an uninvited guest?"

"There had to be a reason why Tsuna was distracted while he was fighting. I checked around with the security cameras and saw that Squalo got passed our security to have a look at Tsuna." The hitman said.

Gokudera pursed his lips, "But the only possible way that the Varia could have gone through our security mostly undetected is-"

"We already know that some of the people here are loyal to Xanxus." Lambo shrugged, "I hope you managed to get rid of at least some of them Reborn. That way we have little to worry about."

"Only two were involved in sneaking Squalo in this time." Reborn said, "Unfortunately, the rest of Xanxus' loyalists are still unknown."

"I'll just bite them all to death." Hibari said as he crossed his arms, "We don't need weak herbivores."

"As expected of you Hibari! That's so extreme!" Ryohei pumped his fist in the air with exaggerated movement.

"It is more convenient if you do it like that." Takeshi spoke up as he leaned against the door, absently thumbing his chin. "But you have to think of it in this perspective as well, we can still convince them to join our side, give us information, and that will be a bigger blow on the Varia than just getting rid of them."

Reborn nodded in agreement, Spoken like a true, intuitive hitman. Gokudera saw the approval in hitman's eyes and he huffed, muttering, "I could have told you that."

"Still," Chrome spoke up shyly and everyone's attention was drawn to her as she fidgeted. "The party today wasn't a failure, right?"

Reborn nodded, "It was far from a failure, if you push aside the Squalo incident. Most of the Vongola's ally families saw the Vongola Primo in Tsuna when he fought off that pathetic family. And we also got to show off the strength of the guardians. They'll be tipping on our side in this war, soon." He said, "But that means that we also have to hurry in training Tsuna and you as well. With his allies dwindling, Xanxus would try to strike while he still has most support. I expect you to do your duties as Tsuna's guardians."

There was a resounding 'yes' from all individuals, minus HIbari who frowned and Mukuro who just chuckled creepily. Reborn looked at them all with calculating eyes before they landed at Yamamoto who looked back at him with the same blank-faced calculation.

"Is there something wrong, Takeshi?"

The tallest guardian straightened as he was singled out. He felt the eyes of his fellow guardian on him as he said, "I met the boss."

There was silence before Gokudera muttered a curse and demanded, "Oi! Didn't Reborn-san specifically tell you not to show your face to him?" Mukuro looked at the natural hitman with interest.

Reborn didn't say anything and Takeshi continued, ignoring Gokudera's 'don't ignore me!' yells. "I heard him in pain and I thought he was hurt or was attacked, so I went to check."

"And?"

The dark-haired guardian shrugged, "He wasn't." Takeshi wasn't the type to tell that he saw their boss crying in his room. He may not know anything about human interactions but he knew at least that you just don't tell people you saw the future boss of the powerful Vongola family, crying.

Reborn seemed to get that and changed the question, "And what did he say when he saw you?"

"He told me to leave him alone." For some reason, Reborn was looking at Yamamoto's face with a searching look. The guardian looked back calmly, wondering what type of reaction the other was trying to gauge out of him. He'd seen people cry before, begging to him not to kill them. The brunet crying for no apparent reason didn't bother him.

"And you left him alone right?" Gokudera prodded with a frown, "You followed the boss' orders?"

The taller guardian gave his storm counterpart a look, "Of course." The Italian sighed, "But then he called me back and asked me to come nearer." Gokudera froze at that.

"What? Did he punch you too?" Mukuro asked with interest, "That strange boy seems to have a habit of punching hitmen." He said as he looked at the arcobaleno who ignored him.

"He is definitely strange." Takeshi agreed, "And he didn't punch me, he just looked at me for a long time." He shrugged, "I don't know. It looked like he was categorizing me or something. Not that I mind, I guess. He's a weird one but as long as he does his job, then I will do mine."

Gokdera frowned at the other. He'd always known of Takeshi's nonchalant attitude, which was why he was deemed as a natural born hitman. It was because he could do missions without so much as flinching at what they were. It didn't matter if he had to kill someone or track down someone or fool someone, he executed everything perfectly. As long as you do your job, he would do his better. He was loyal to the family, at least there's that. He knew that Xanxus wasn't good for the family and that was the only reason they had him on their side, but he was also the type that would let the boss die if it would serve the family better, even though their number one priority was loyalty to the boss before the family.

Reborn may share his sentiment with regards to this because the hitman frowned before covering his disapproval with a tilt of his fedora, "Very well. Try not to actively seek him out if you can but don't avoid him either. I think it'd better if he doesn't see you at the moment, but if he seeks you out himself, then hear what he has to say."

The swordsman raised an eyebrow at the strange orders but it was Ryohei who asked in confusion, "Why? Is Sawada extremely allergic to his face?"

Gokudera choked while Lambo coughed into his hand trying to hide his laughter, "No! Of course not, you idiot!"

"Your boss is getting used to being part of the mafia. And nothing says mafia like a hitman guardian." Reborn lied, "He has seen Takeshi in action and it would be wise if we let him be for awhile and gauge his reaction on his newest guardian."

The hitman knew it was a flimsy lie but it would at least stop the questioning on Ryohei's part. The other guardians, who didn't know about Vongola UA unit 08, barely cared enough to ask and Takeshi had never been the type to question his orders anyway, preferring to deal with them swiftly. So it was all good.

"Now, if that's all, I want you to get back to your trainings. Missions will be given to the other members of the family for awhile. I prefer all of you to be here, in this mansion for the next two months. We don't know what will happen next but it would be for the best if all of the guardians are near the boss." Reborn ordered, "Keep a close watch on anyone or anything that gets close to Tsuna, any harm on him will be on your head."

There was a general affirmation before the guardians turned to leave. Reborn looked at Takeshi who paused and looked back at him, "You just came back from your mission and helped protect Tsuna earlier. Well done, Takeshi. It's best if you take some rest now."

The teen inclined his head and was about to leave when Reborn asked him another question.

"What did you think of him?" The teenage hitman turned to the older man who was looking at him, "What did you think of your boss?"

"He's just a kid." The guardian said but then he shrugged, "But it would be better for the family if he was the boss, rather than Xanxus. He can be taught to run the family."

Reborn nodded, "And as a person?"

Amber eyes narrowed in suspicion but he answered nonetheless, "I don't know him enough to judge. And besides, it's irrelevant."

"You'll be working with from now on. It's pretty relevant." The older hitman said patiently, "Do you think you'll get along with him?"

The tall guardian gave him a dangerous smile, "I doubt it. I hardly get along with anyone without scaring them off." He said before he turned to leave. When the door closed behind him, Reborn turned to look at the windows again.

"I wouldn't be so sure about that."
