Chapter 6: Foreseer

~Chrom's POV~

I sighed as I looked up at the stars. Yesterday, the war the Mad King of Plegia has wanted ever since he became king had begun. There were no real attacks today but some small bands attacking small villages. But there was one thing that had been stuck in my mind.

Gangrel wants Anna as his queen. 'What's more,' I thought scowling, 'was the fact he actually tried to kiss her!'

~Flashback~

I sliced down a brigand as my partner for this fight, Virion, shot down another. I looked over to see Maribelle and Ricken strike down the Captain and the other enemies retreating. "Virion, let's go find Anna." He nodded. I may not like him because he flirts with Lissa and Anna, but he's one of the few archers we have.

We soon saw her still being held by a brigand but now Gangrel was standing in front of her. I could not hear what he said to her but I heard her response.

"Because it was a Plegian who kidnapped me from my home in another country, tortured me, starved me and almost killed me. True one man cannot speak for an entire nation, but those who were not under his command obviously saw my pain. They saw what he was doing was completely inhumane and should never be done to a human, yet they turned aside and They. Did. Nothing. To. Save. Me!"

He blinked in shock. Obviously Robin's Father was working on his own and the Mad King had no part in her imprisonment, but earlier I saw that he recognized the patterns on both hers and Robins cloaks. His face softened to a point I thought would be impossible for him and he replied. Her face turned to one of shock and I almost choked as I watched him wrap a piece of her hair around his finger giving it a small kiss and Smelling it! He leaned closer to her muttering something to her that seemed to scare her even more. He lifted her chin up and leaned in to kiss her.

I may not be able to shoot an arrow in a straight line, but as soon as I saw that I grabbed Virions' Bow, killed the Brigand holding her and shot at Gangrel, giving him a deep cut in his cheek that no doubt will scar.

He stumbled away from her but growled out before leaving. "I WILL have you girl. One way or another you will come to me!"

I threw Virions' Bow back to him, not noticing that I had hit him in the face, and ran towards her. "Anna, are you alright?" I pulled her into my arms but she stayed frozen. After a few moments she slowly blinked looked up at me. 'Chrom?' she mouthed out my name. I nodded and she started trembling. It got so bad that I thought she was going to have a nervous breakdown. As I was about to speak, she said seven words that made my hold on her tighten as she shook.

H-h-He wants me to b-be his Q-queen."

I rubbed her back a bit and murmured calming words into her hair. Emmeryn and the others came over to us and I bowed my head in shame. "Forgive me, Emm. I acted rashly."

"It's all right, Chrom. King Gangrel is the one at fault here. You were only protecting me."

I blocked out all other noises around me and lifted Anna up into my arms since she couldn't walk as shaken up as she is. She tried protesting when I placed her on my horse but I gave her a serious look and replied. "Your trembling will spook the horse if you ride by yourself." I gave her no more room for argument as I climbed up behind her.

~Time Skip~

I left her room, bidding her goodnight before walking towards my room. Surprisingly, after kissing her on the lips like I did I'm not blushing. They were softer than I dreamed they would be. The kiss in itself was like being hit directly by a Rexbolt Thunder Spell. I smiled at the fact that she kissed back. Closing my eyes, I could still see her smiling face.

"Oof." I had run into someone, that someone being Robin. "Chrom, can I talk to you?" I blinked but nodded. I led him to my room and we sat in the chairs. We were silent for a while then he looked me strait in the eye. "What are your intentions for Anna?" I blinked. "What do you mean?"

"Exactly what I said. What are your intentions for Anna?"

I looked down and didn't respond right away. "How long have you loved her?" he asked. "Since we first met her on the road to Southtown. I didn't know it was love at first until Emm pointed it out to me." he nodded, his face still expressionless. "What happened while you both were in her room?"

My head snapped up. "N-Nothing inappropriate I can assure you." Robin gave a small smile. "I know. I just wanted to see you freak out a bit to calm our nerves." I laughed. "Thank you for that." "No problem." He smirked that Devil-May-Care smile.

My smile faded. "Honestly Robin, Gangrel said something to her that scared her so much she looked like she was about to have a breakdown. She was trembling so bad. She said that he wants her to be his Queen."

"WHAT?!"

"Exactly what I thought."

Robin stood up and began angrily pacing. "I could understand him wanting the Fire Emblem but not her." I nodded then said, "I believe I know why." He froze and turned towards me. "She told you?" he asked slowly. "That this world is considered fiction in hers? Yes she told me." "And what do you think?"

"It's completely absurd. Yet it's not." He nodded, "Yes, I had the same reaction. You won't tell anyone this will you?" "Not unless Anna tells me to." "Good."

~End of Flashback~

"Chrom? What are you doing out so late?" I turned to see Robin walking towards me.

"Oh, hi, Robin. Just...dueling with some unpleasant thoughts..." I turned fully to him. "Tomorrow we march to Regna Ferox to request additional soldiers. But there's something you should know first." He raised an eyebrow but nodded for me to continue. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. "...Not everything Gangrel said was a lie. The last exalt, my father, waged war on Plegia for many years. The violence... It was a brutal campaign, ending only with his death 15 years ago."

I opened my eyes and looked him in the eye. "Plegia rightfully remembers their suffering, but his war was no kinder to his own people. As the fighting dragged on, our army became more and more diminished. Farmers who could barely wield a pitchfork were conscripted and sent to their deaths. Soon there was no food at all, and the kingdom began to collapse. I was young, but I remember those dark times." I looked in the direction of Emmeryns' window on the third floor. "...I know how they affected Emmeryn."

Robin's eyes became sorrowful. "Such an experience would change anyone."

I nodded. "Indeed. When our father died before her 10th year, he left her quite the legacy... Plegia's desire for vengeance... Our own people's unbridled rage... My sister became a target for blame from all sides. Her own subjects began to hurl insults—and stones." I bit my lip. "She still bears the scar from one... But she never let them see her pain. Only Lissa and I understood."

He gripped my shoulder and followed my eyes to Emms' window. "It must have been so hard..."

I nodded. "I cannot claim to know how she does it, Robin. I could never greet such hostility with warmth and patience. While our people mocked and vilified her, she reached out and healed them. She brought soldiers home to their families. She ended the war. And when Ylisse's spirit was mended and the people "forgave" her?" I shook my head a bit. "...She never resented them for it. She represents the best of the halidom—the part most worth protecting. She IS peace. But some men would take advantage of that. Men like King Gangrel. The day he understands peace will be the day death gives it to him." I turned to face him fully. "...So perhaps I must be death's agent. Emmeryn would never order him killed, nor would I wish her to."

"Well spoken, sir."

We turned towards the voice. "Marth..." The boy walked up to us and inclined his head. "Good evening to you."

"How did you get in here?" I asked a hand going to my sword. Marth gave a small chuckle. "The cleft in the castle wall, behind the maple grove."

I blinked. "There? But how would you...? Ugh!" I smacked myself on the forehead in what Anna called a facepalm.

Robin raised an eyebrow at me. "You know the place, Chrom?"

I blushed a bit a ducked my head down a bit so Marth wouldn't see it. "Yes. I bashed in part of the wall while training the Shepherds. It's only a small hole, and I'd thought it well concealed, but..."

Marth snickered. "Your secret is safe with me." His face became serious. "I come here only to warn you."

"Warn us?"

Marth nodded. "The Exalt's life is in danger."

Chrom shook my head. "What, Emmeryn? That's absurd. She's guarded at all hours." But maybe I should have listened to Anna when she said we would need more guards on duty tonight.

Marth sighed and turned away biting his lip. He seemed to be fighting with himself over something. He then nodded to himself and turned back to me making, what I thought was, direct eye contact with me. "What if... What if I told you I have seen the future? Would you believe me? A future where Emmeryn is killed. Here. Tonight."

I scoffed. "Seen the future? Have you lost your wits?" Surely 'Marth' was lying.

"Yes, I expected you wouldn't believe me. So allow me to prove it!" Marth pulled out his sword and I pulled out mine. "I'm about to save your life." His gaze turned to something behind me and Robin. "...From him."

Before I could turn around to see what he was looking at, Marth threw his sword upwards and jumped. He grabbed it and killed the assassin that had been hiding in the bushes behind us, slashing his back. Marth pointed his sword towards the body. "I trust this proof will suffice?"

I blinked. "...Yeah."

Another assassin rose from the bushes, which caught Marth off guard. He backed up and tripped on the sword that the first assassin dropped. The second assassin's sword slashed across Marth's mask. I sped past Marth and killed the assassin. Turning to face Marth again I gasped. Marth's long blue hair flowed past her shoulders and with the mask now gone, I could clearly see a feminine face.

"Wait, you're—You're a woman?"

Marth chuckled nervously rubbing the back of her head. "And quite the actress, too. Honestly, I'm surprised you didn't figure it out until just now."

Robin smirked. "I knew it. Frederick owes me fifty gold pieces." Marth and I raised an eyebrow at him. "You and Knight Frederick made a bet about weather I was a girl or not?" She asked.

"I insisted you were a girl 'cause, no offence, when you walk you do sway your hips a bit. No man can do that." She blushed and mouthed 'Oops' before giving a shy smile that reminded me of Anna's.

The sound of an explosion resounded within the Palace. Everyone dashed into the palace readying our weapons for the attack.

~Anna's POV~

I walked back to my room with a huff. Chrom didn't listen when I said I thought we might need more guards on watch tonight. But I had begged some of the Pegasus Knights to keep an eye out for assassins. My argument had been simple. "We are at War. The small attacks on the villages mean he's saving his biggest strike for the palace." That had been enough for them.

I opened my door and blinked. "I didn't expect to see you here." I quickly closed my door and locked it before turning back to the young man sitting on my bed. Ike smiled softly as he leaned up against the headboard. His black cloak was draped over a chair, his sword was leaning against the wall, his feet crossed on the bed and shoes were still on. I raised an eyebrow, walked over to him and lifted his feet off the bed. "No shoes on the bed. I don't care if you do it in your own room but don't do it in mine." "Yes ma'am." I chuckled and sat down next to him.

"How'd you get in here without anyone seeing?" He pointed and I shook my head with a smile. "The window. Of course." "You always use to say I had a flair for the dramatic." I smiled. After a bit of awkward silence he spoke and even though I couldn't see his eyes I could tell he was looking me in the eye. "You alright? Everything Ok? No bones broken in the last week or so?" "No Ike, I'm fine."

He scooted closer to me. "You didn't look it when you first came through that door." I sighed. "I just thought we might need more guards on the lookout tonight. Chrom was being stubborn and said we had enough people on duty. I was able to convince some Pegasus Knights to be on the lookout for assassins." He nodded. "Anna..." I turned to him a bit hesitant. I had thought long and hard about this when I found out I had a son in this world and what it would mean. I could probably guess who the father was but even that could change. "Ike, until it is revealed to the others that you are my son, I would like to hear you call me Mom or Mother when it's just us."

He seemed to blink but smiled. "Very well, Mother. Allow me to fully introduce myself: I am Ike Jonathan, Son of Lady Anastasia Melody and..." I placed a hand over his mouth. "Wait! Don't tell me who your father is. I want it to be a surprise. But I have a feeling I know." He smiled. "Alright."

For the next few hours or so I asked him about his life before Grima took over. He told me that he was first born but he had a twin. He told me of training with his cousin Morgan to become tacticians, how he and his twin loved listening to stories I would tell them of the world I was born in and of his father training him with a sword.

Suddenly an explosion rang through the halls and shook my room. Ike grabbed me and covered me with his body and his cloak that he grabbed when the glass from my window shattered. When that died down he jumped up, grabbed his sword and ran out of the room, me not that far behind.

We passed a window and I looked down and I snarled. "Validar." Hiding with Ike I listened to his instructions. "Remember, I want the Emblem in my hand and Emmeryn dead on the floor. Let nothing distract you from either purpose."

"As you will it." Answered one of the assassins. Ike and I looked at each other and nodded we snuck down to the ground floor and there met a red assassin I would recognize anywhere.

"Whoa, whoa, did I just hear that right? We're to KILL the Exalt? I'm just here for the plunder. You know, line my pockets with some royal goods. The Exalt's such a sweet lady... Sure, I'll rob her blind, but I'd never harm her!" When he said that I grabbed him from behind one hand holding a knife to his neck and the other hand over his mouth. Ike grabbed his arms and I whispered into his ear. "Gaius, come quietly and I will make you the 'Sweetest' deal. Literally if you know what I mean."

We pulled the assassin back with us so that we would be able to see everything yet not be seen. Ike released him but pushed him into the corner.

"Easy there, blue blood. I'm not here to hurt anyone."

Ike raised an eyebrow. "...Yet you run with a band of assassins?"

"Believe it or not, just trying to make a living. I'm a thief, see? Bust open doors, crack into chests...that kind of thing. This lot said they wanted to break into some type of vault. Nobody said anything about murder. I'd just as soon sit this one out."

I smiled. "Then perhaps you'd be willing to prove your good intentions?"

Gaius raised an eyebrow. "Beg pardon?"

"We need all the help we can get to save the Exalt's life. You appear capable, and we could use any information you have about our foes."

"Oh, right—those good intentions. Fine then, I'll prove my sincerity...if you sweeten the deal."

I was about to pull out my secret weapon when Ike rolled his eyes. "You want gold? ...Fine, you scoundrel. Let me just—"

I had already pulled out my bag and tossed it to him. "Look inside." I said.

Gaius opened it and his eyes widened dramatically. ""Candies"? As in, sugar candies?"

I nodded.

"IT'S A DEAL!"

Ike stared at the man in shock. "...You'll risk your life for us if we give you...a bag of candy?"

I smirked. "I told you I would make you the 'Sweetest' deal."

"Don't get me wrong," Gaius said holding up a hand. "I'll take the gold, too. Later. Unless you've got more of these. ...Have you got more of these?!" He gave me a look that was a cross between the look Puss gave in 'Shrek 2' and Hunni from 'Ouran High School Host Club' in his cute mode.

"I made those earlier today. I wasn't sure what people would like so I made a bit of everything. Tell me which ones you like later and I'll make 'em and give you the recipes to boot."

He cheered, placed the candy in his bag and I asked both him and Ike to team up. "But Mot- Anna, what are you going to do?" I looked him in the eye.

"I'm going to have a word with 'Father'."

With that I plunged into battle and later met up with Chrom and Robin. "Guys! We have an assassin on our side named Gaius. Just give him a large bag of candy and some gold and he'll be good." They gave me a strange look but continued fighting. Finally we reached Validar.

Validar looked at Robin and laughed. "Well, well... Ha ha ha! Oh, I know you... Submit to me, and perhaps I might honor you with the truth!"

I stepped out behind the two of them. "You'll have to get through me first, Validar."

He laughed again looking at me. "There's the Runaway Sacrifice. My master will be very pleased to see you!"

Chrom whispered in my ear. "Is he talking about Robin's Father?" I glanced at both him and Robin from the corner of my eye. "More or Less." I replied before charging at the man. I saw Robin and Chrom watch from the sidelines along with 'Marth', Ike, Gaius, the Taguel Panne, Emmeryn and the other Shepherds.

"You've gotten better, child." "And you have gotten sloppy, Monster."

Steel clashed again and again. Hard blows were thrown and sparks flew. Sweat began to build on his brow as well as on mine. He suddenly lashed out with an Eclipse Dark spell. I remembered that in the game, this spell can either cut your enemies HP in half or reduce it to one. I was panting hard. Validar walked over to me and whispered in my ear.

"You know, you are pretty powerful my dear. I believe I know what to do now. Once Robin becomes Grima's Vessel, you shall marry Gangrel. He'll make sure you stay in line while Master Grima rules." My eyes widened and in a flash my sword went straight through his gut and lungs.

"No... This is...all...wrong... How could...you have known the plan..."

With my sword still within him, I whisper into Validar's ear. "You tell that overgrown lizard Grima that neither me nor Robin will EVER become his Vessel, nor will I ever marry that pathetic excuse of a King. You're a pathetic excuse of a Father. Never come near me or Big Brother Robin again if you value your soul."

With a tug I pulled my sword away from his body and watched as he collapsed. I turned towards my friends and slowly began to walk towards them. Robin came over and wrapped my arm around his neck and his free arm went around my waist. He led me over to a couch in another room and I laid down there. I was hugged by everyone and Lissa healed me with her staff.

Chrom hugged me tight and kissed my forehead. "Thank the gods you're safe! Both you and Emm!"

Emmeryn smiled. "It is you I have to thank, Chrom."

Marth and Ike came over to me and smiled. "Leaving already you two?" I whispered. They both nodded and Ike bent down and kissed my temple. "Goodbye Mother. Be safe." I nodded to him and Marth squeezed my hand. Together, they left.

Phila appeared and bowed to Chrom. "I beg your forgiveness, milord! I failed in my duty—they should have never made it into the castle in the first place."

Chrom shook his head. "Peace, Phila. You couldn't have known what was coming. Only Marth and Ike could...

Emmeryn raised an eyebrow. "...Marth and Ike?"

"Yes, I would speak more with..." He turned around but Marth and Ike wasn't there. "Um... Robin, where's Marth and Ike?"

Robin looked around. "Hmm... An excellent question. She was here a moment ago..."

"...Not again!" Chrom groaned and left to see if he could catch them before they left.

~Chrom's POV~

I saw Marth walking with Ike by her side.

I blocked their path and said, "Going somewhere?" Ike snickered and muttered something that sounded like 'Busted'. Marth smacked the back of his head. "You two have a bad habit of leaving without saying good-bye, you know."

Marth rubbed the back of her head nervously. "Yes, I'm afraid we have a few bad habits."

I smiled. "Good ones as well—you saved my life as well as both of my sisters. Is there a way I can repay you? Some favor I can grant?"

Marth shook her head. "Hearing you offer is reward enough."

"But there must be something..."

Marth smiled. "We already have what we came for: history has been rewritten."

I became curious. "And what future averted?"

Marth sighed and sad look appeared on her face. "After the Exalt's untimely assassination, the Fire Emblem would be stolen. This, in turn, would lead to a great war, and soon to the end of mankind itself." She gave a half smile. "...But I'm sure that sounds like madness to you."

"...Strangely, no. It doesn't. Somehow I know I can trust you. And I hope someday to repay your favors."

Marth gave a true smile. "Perhaps one day you shall. Until then..." With that she left but Ike stayed behind.

"Could you do me a small favor, Da- Prince Chrom?" I turned and looked at him as he reached up and pulled off the cloth over his eyes. When he opened them he revealed that both eyes were blood red but hinted with my own blue color and a dark green. He smiled sadly at my surprised reaction. "This is the reason I keep my eyes covered. I have a disease known as Albinism. Having my skin exposed too long to the sun could make me ill which is why I have such a dark cloak. Because of the disease, my eye color was majorly effected. However my twin was spared from the illness. I have aspects that both my parents would be proud of if they were still living in the time I came from, my hair color for instance."

He ran his hand though his hair as he spoke. "What I ask of you is simple. Anna was a friend of mine back in my time and comforted me when Father was killed. In a way she reminds me of mother who, at the time she gave birth to me and my twin, became very ill and couldn't fight in the war. She died a few days after father was killed. My twin and I were only three at the time, but we remember both of our parents and how amazing they were. We miss them but we fight in their name and honor. All I ask you to do is to please watch over her. Keep her safe."

I blinked but then smiled. "You have my word. I will keep her safe. No promises she won't be injured every once in a while but..." he chuckled. "I know." He bowed to me and left.

I went back into the palace to find Emmeryn thanking the Taguel Panne for her help. I however went over to the couch to find Anna asleep. I smiled and let her sleep as I went over to where Phila, Emm, and Frederick were.

"It will take time to investigate how the assassination plot got so far. We have no leads at present." Phila said.

"It was Plegia! I'm sure of it. They'd do anything for the Emblem." I said before turning to my eldest sister. "Emm, you can't stay here. Come to Ferox where it's safe."

"And leave the people undefended?" She said softly but sternly. "War is at our borders, Chrom. Do you expect Ylisse to stand against Plegia without a leader? They must know their exalt stands with them."

"But if something happens to you? What then?" I asked.

Frederick then decided to step in. "Your Grace, perhaps you might relocate to the eastern palace for the time being? The other kingdoms know nothing of it. You would be safer."

"Yes, please. At least that. I can't leave for Ferox with you right in harm's way." I said practically begging her to listen to me.

Emmeryn looked me in the eyes for a while before she spoke. "...Hmm. Very well."

I sighed and hugged her. "Thanks, Emm. I mean it. We'll escort you to the palace before we head north to the border. But I think we all need a few hours of sleep first." I looked at Robin and he nodded before picking up Anna and taking her to her room.
