Meeting the Vongola: Part One
It was around mid-afternoon on Sunday, a week after Tsuna had found Harry, when Tsuna received a call from Shoichi saying that he and the other Vongola engineers had just arrived on one of the Vongola's private jets at London Luton Airport. Tsuna smiled at the news, happy to hear that more of his family was arriving. After making sure that the geniuses did not need him to send them transportation and that they knew where to go, Tsuna called up the security to inform them of the impending arrivals.
Harry who was in his usual spot reading, looked up trying to understand the mix of Italian and Japanese that Tsuna was speaking from what he had been taught over the last week. He unfortunately only understood a few words. Though Tsuna explained to him after the call was finished that other people would be arriving soon and staying with them. It was only around half an hour later that Gokudera led three people into the makeshift office.
Tsuna got up and greeted the three happily, "Shoichi-kun, Spanner-kun, and Verde-san thank you for your help and for bringing the requested items. Where's Giannini-san?"
"It's no problem, Tsunayoshi-kun. It was a fun challenge to try to work around magic. As to Giannini-san, he decided to stay back in Italy to spend Christmas with his father since the devices you requested were finished." A red-haired man wearing glasses answered.
"Ah...I'm not keeping you three from your families for Christmas am I?" Tsuna asked slightly distressed. "This was rather short notice to spend Christmas here."
"It's not a problem Tsunayoshi-kun, England or Italy is about the same for me. Spending it with the Vongola has always been my preference since my family doesn't really celebrate Christmas. I'll be going back to Japan to spend New Years with Mom and Sis though." The redhead reassured.
The blond man in a green jumpsuit shrugged saying, "My family is here in England anyway. I'll probably drop by to visit them for some of the time on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. They're used to me doing whatever and aren't big on holidays."
"Verde-san what about you? Do you have plans with the other Arcobaleno?" Tsuna asked.
"Don't be ridiculous, Tsunayoshi-kun. Holidays have no more meaning than any other day. After everything is set up I will be going back to my labs." The green-haired teenager in a lab coat replied. The teenager reminded Harry of Reborn for some reason.
"If you don't have any plans for Christmas then please stay here. I know you guys brought a box with a fully functional workshop with you. I don't like the thought of you spending the holidays alone, you don't take good enough care of yourself. You can spend all your time in the workshop if you want, just come to Christmas dinner. I plan on cooking." Tsuna pleaded as he turned his large, earnest, pleading doe-eyes to the scientist. "Please Verde-san."
The scientist, internally winced as he tried to look away from those eyes. He should conduct an experiment some day on whether anyone other than that devil Reborn could actually resist that look and figure out how they worked so well. This boy made no sense. He cared too much about everybody because as misanthropic as Verde was, he knew the boy was asking him to stay out of some altruistic concern for the scientist's welfare. He heaved a resigned sigh, "Fine, Tsunayoshi-kun, but none of your destructive family is allowed anywhere near the workshop." Besides as indifferent as Verde was normally about food, even he had to admit Tsunayoshi's cooking was a temptation.
"As long as you set it up away from the training building that shouldn't be an issue. I trust you three to set-up appropriate security measures." Tsuna agreed readily. "Now I should introduce you to my new ward. Harry, meet three of the smartest people in the world." Pointing to each one Tsuna told him, "Meet Shoichi Irie, Spanner, and Verde. They are three of the four top inventors for the Vongola. Everyone meet Harry Potter."
"Nice to meet you." Harry said politely as he bowed as Reborn had taught him.
The three new adults nodded at him and the blond that was introduced as Spanner pulled a pink wrench shaped thing from this pocket and held it out to the boy. Harry looked at Tsuna questioningly, "It's okay to take it Harry. It's a strawberry lollipop. Spanner makes them himself. You aren't supposed to take candy from strangers, but Spanner and anyone else I introduce you to as family is safe."
Harry nodded taking the lollipop and thanking the man. He sat quietly just watching the adults as they talked.
"He's the reason you wanted these magic cloaking devices, I assume. Who are you trying to hide him from?" Verde asked.
"Right now, all the wizards." Tsuna shrugged, "More specifically, Albus Dumbledore."
Shoichi winced and grabbed his stomach as he could feel it acting up at Tsuna's answer. Verde shook his head saying, "You always do get into the most troublesome situations." The genius took a small box out of his pocket and lit a green flame from a ring he was wearing before inserting the flame into a hole in the box. From the box several items appeared on Tsuna's desk. Several of the items looked like necklaces with a marble that looked to have indigo colored flames flickering inside it mounted inside a metallic loop. The rest looked like larger versions of the pendant except in hexagonal boxes instead of a loop."We found that flames can work to block magical signatures, more specifically Mist Flames can conceal them and can be used to block all magical tracking. The amulets are the personal magic cloaking devices and the larger ones are to be placed no further than five kilometers apart from each other to form a perimeter for the area your want cloaked as it will form a force field. We set the devices up so they have two levels of use. The first level is just magical cloaking. It hides magical signatures so the person wearing the amulet or anyone inside the force field cannot be tracked using magical means. In the case of the field, it also hides the use of magic within the field. The second level casts a high level illusion that essentially makes anyone wearing the amulet or any persons inside the field invisible to wizards, they will still see the structures and environment but no human life. The amulet will also nullify the effects of the force field so that the wearer can actually see people. You should know though, since it runs off of Mist Flames anyone that can see through a Mist illusion can see through the device's invisibility. The device's invisibility is maybe quarter as powerful as anyone of your Mists.
Also since the devices run off Mist Flames they will need to be recharged by your Mist users occasionally. The amulets will automatically draw a bit of Mist Flames from it's wearer if the wearer has Mist or Sky Flames to power itself. If not the amulets need to be recharged around once a year, more often if you use the invisibility option more. The larger devices will need recharging every other month if in cloaking mode, and every month if in invisibility mode."
"How did you get these charged then?" Tsuna asked. "Chrome and Mukuro are both on missions."
"We borrowed Fran from the Varia." Shoichi responded.
"What type of treatment can it stand up to?"
"It runs off of flames so basically unless you completely destroy it, it'll do it's job. It can be worn at all times."
"Harry." Tsuna called to the little boy that had gotten bored with trying to understand the Italian conversation and had gone back to reading his book. Harry looked up and went over to Tsuna when the Vongola beckoned him over, "I need you to wear this at all times. Never take it off. It will hide you from anyone that would want to take you back to your relatives."
The child's eyes widened in fear as he nodded his understanding vigorously. Tsuna smiled at him before setting an amulet to the second mode before putting it over the little boy's neck. "I need to leave you to yourself for the rest of the afternoon so be a good boy and go play outside or read your book in your room."
After Harry left Tsuna turned to Verde, "One more question. I've heard that wizards cannot use electronics. Is that true and can we fix that? I want to get Harry a tablet for Christmas so he can get books more easily."
"That's not completely true. High concentrations of magic tend to short-circuit most electronics, but wizards themselves do not. Places that have lots of magic cast in them have a lot of residual magic in the air, and that is what destroys electronics. If wizards by their presence alone could destroy electronics then muggleborn children would be constantly destroying electronics in their own home. The average wizarding household might produce enough residual magic to short-circuit a modern piece of electronics after a few months. It's only places like the magic schools and the magical shopping centers where immediate electronics failure would be an issue. Magic would need to be cast directly at a piece of electronics to short-circuit it outside of those environments. Though if you coated the electronic in Lightning Flames that might be enough to protect it. Hmm...that is an interesting idea." Verde mused.
"If you can make electronics magic resistant please try. We might need that advantage some day." Tsuna instructed.
"I'll see about getting you that tablet for the child in time for Christmas as a prototype."
"Thank you, also see if you could develop some magic resistant cell phones. Now I think we should go set up these cloaking devices and whatever other security devices you've brought. We should also set up the training building and your workshops. That will give the staff here time to get your rooms ready."
The group spent the rest of the afternoon setting up the cloaking devices. They decided to leave the other electrical and mechanical security for the next day since it had gotten dark. They did however use the cover of darkness to set up the training building and workshop, so that the servants and security could not see them use their boxes. They instead would only see the result.
Tsuna was very grateful for his foresight, especially in getting the Lightning Flame reinforced training building set up immediately. He was also glad that before his family came to Brocket Hall, Tsuna made sure the manor was as Vongola-proof as he could manage.
When he had first arrived at Brocket Hall he had requested the housekeeper and butler to make an inventory of all the valuable (and breakable) items on display in the manor, pack them up, and store them away in an as out of the way room as possible. When the servants gave him perplexed looks, Tsuna smiled his sweet smile and explained to them his family had children, were on the boisterous side, and could cause a lot of accidental (and intentional) destruction. Tsuna neglected to mention to them that three of the four children were actually very well behaved and that the destruction was more likely to come from two of the older family members *cough*Hibari&Mukuro*cough* preferring to let them draw their own conclusions. No need to scare them prematurely (Tsuna needed someone to take care of the manor until some of his Vongola acclimated staff arrived). The two senior servants decided that the polite young man most likely knew his family best and did as he asked. Tsuna had given them a fairly generous household budget to replace the vacancy that was left by the removal of the more precious pieces with tasteful but less valuable (and more replaceable) decorations.
Now he just had to make sure that they had done as asked. The arrival of the engineers presaged the arrival of the rest of his destructive family so Tsuna decided to check with the butler and housekeeper on the progress of the task he set them. When the two servants reported to Tsuna that all the most valuable items had been removed and showed him the room that they had been stored in. Tsuna thanked them and dismissed them. Then he proceeded to coat the room in Sky Flames and prayed that it would be enough protection.
It turned out he needed all those precautions the very next day.
The loud sounds of gunshots startled Tsuna from his concentration on the contract in front of him. He could hear the noisy cracks of guns firing and his sensitive hearing picked up on the thuds of bodies hitting the ground. Listening carefully he managed to pin-point the sounds as coming from the lawn near the front door. Worried that it was assassins sent for him and wanting to avoid innocent people getting hurt, Tsuna bolted out of his office and towards the noises only pausing long enough to assure himself his gloves were in his pockets.
When he arrived on the scene he was tempted to run back into the manor, up to his room, lock the door, and pretend he didn't see anything (while hiding in his closet). Unfortunately his conscience nagged at him to put a halt to the carnage. With a flame enhanced burst of speed he appeared between a security guard and the tonfa descending towards the poor man's head and grabbed the weapon. The security guard breathed a sigh of relief having seen the devastating effect those tonfas had until he realized that it was his principle that stood between him and the demon that had stormed onto the property.
"Please run away Mr. Vongola! We'll try to hold him off as long as we can!" The brave (and terrified) guard yelled as he tried to pull the young man back before he met the same fate as the other guards. The guard was surprised to find the weak looking young man was not only easily ignoring his attempts to pull him, back but also keeping the demon in a deadlock.
"Kyoya. Please stop this right now. Why are you beating up the security personnel?" The Vongola addressed the demon.
"Move omnivore. I am testing the herbivores. The security of this place is weak and they desrve to be bitten to death." The predator responded.
"That's something I'm sure you'll fix, but please stop biting to death the guards. They will not be able to give you a good fight."
Hibari eyed his boss calculatingly, "Hn. Fight me!" Kyoya wrenched his tonfa out of Tsuna's grip and jumped back, breaking the deadlock and got himself into a battle-ready stance.
Tsuna barely kept from rolling his eyes. He should have expected that. "I did promise, but not here and not right now. I need to take care of this mess first and this is not our property. I don't want to destroy it. Shoichi and Spanner set up a training building in the back lawn that's fortified with Lightning Flames. We'll spar there for an hour before dinner."
"Three hours."
"Two hours and I promise to spar with you an hour every week we are here if you promise not to fight anywhere but the training building and to not destroy anything in the house." Tsuna countered.
Hibari considered his Sky's proposal and finally nodded. His tonfas disappeared back into his jacket.
Tsuna breathed a sigh of relief and was just thankful he had learned how to use Sun Flames since he would be needing them the next few weeks. "Unless we get a lot of guests for Christmas you have the third floor mostly to yourself and Kusakabe-san. I also put Verde-san there since like you he prefers to be away from everyone. He will mostly be in the workshop building most of the time anyway. My office is on the ground floor, east wing, last door on the right."
"Hn. I have important information about your small animal."
"Later, after dinner. Why don't you go and get yourself settled while I handle this? I'll come get you when I'm done so please refrain from biting me to death if I wake you up until we get to the training building. Dinner is usually at 7:00."
"Hn." The carnivore agreed and walked into the house with the security personnel and the house's servants that had witnessed the massacre giving him a wide berth.
Tsuna pinched the bridge of his nose tiredly as he felt a headache coming on. Turning to face the recently arrived head of the security team that Gokudera had insisted they hire to augment the manor's own small security force at least until Hibari came with his men, Tsuna gave a weak smile, "I'm terribly sorry about him. Please be assured that the Vongola will pay for treatment and recovery for your men as well as their wages and a bit extra compensation though I don't think anyone was seriously injured. Kyoya was holding back so I think the worst injuries your men should have a few concussions and maybe a broken bone here or there."
Looking beyond the security head, Tsuna noticed his Storm Guardian examining the scene with annoyed exasperation as he was holding his cell phone no doubt calling for medical assistance. "Five special ambulances should be here in about five minutes Juudaime, that should be enough for everyone. I'll oversee the clean up."
"Thank you Hayato."
William Clarke just stared at the two men that were his temporary bosses and how calmly they were handling the situation. He had never seen anyone so easily dismantle a group of trained guards so quickly. "Mr. Vongola...who was that man? And was he really holding back?"
"Ah...that was Kyoya Hibari, my head of security, he wanted to test the security here. I'm afraid he has a habit of going a bit overboard though I don't see any serious injuries so I think he was holding back. I am really sorry and will be sure to apologize to all your men once they have been treated."
"He was testing us? If you will excuse my saying so sir, are you sure you are safe with him? I've never seen anyone so easily take out a trained group like that and he felt so bloodthirsty." Clarke shivered as he thought about the aura that surrounded the demon.
"I trust Kyoya completely. He's family. He's also one of the strongest people in the world. There are not many people who can best him in combat so don't worry that you and your men weren't able to stop him."
Clarke eyed the fragile looking young man in front of him with new appreciation. When he and his men first saw the VIP that they were supposed to protect they just assumed he was some rich businessman or politician's son. They later learned that the young man was the head of the famous Vongola Family and CEO of Vongola Industries. For all intents and purposes they assumed he would be a liability if there was ever any sort of attack or assassination attempt. Clarke obviously needed to reevaluate his earlier assessment of the CEO. The young man unflinchingly went toe-to-toe with that demon and forced him to back down. The security head was smart enough to know that someone like the demon would never work for or follow someone weaker than him. That could only mean that the friendly young man before him was at least on par if not stronger than that demon. Clarke wistfully wished he could see the upcoming spar between the two, unfortunately the training building (that mysteriously appeared overnight) had very restricted access.
Tsuna sighed when the ambulances arrived and started loading in the men. He watched all the injured men along with Gokudera leave for the hospital before he excused himself to find Hibari for the promised spar. He just hoped he wouldn't get too many injuries because when sparring Hibari, injuries were a forgone conclusion. Well, at least Reborn couldn't complain he was letting his training slack.
Harry had heard the commotion earlier in the day but he was occupied with Italian lessons with Reborn. The teenager would not let him go see what all the noise was about and just told him to ignore the noises and that Tsuna would handle it. That only caused the boy to worry more, concerned over his savior's welfare. When he got his third Italian phrase wrong, being too preoccupied with worrying to pay appropriate attention to Reborn he suddenly felt a something hit his head as he heard a loud thwack. Looking up he saw an annoyed Reborn holding a green rolled up newspaper. Harry cringed as Reborn glared at him. It was the first time since starting tutoring with Reborn that the teenager had ever had cause to chastise him.
"I'm not Tsuna." The hitman stated bluntly. "I'm not going to coddle you. If you don't pay attention and learn, you will be punished. You're a smart kid. A much better student than Dame-Tsuna, so there is no excuse for you to be getting this wrong. I told you that Tsuna will take care of whatever that commotion was and he will. Tsuna is strong. Now stop being distracted and wasting my time or I will have to use the same methods to tutor you like I did Tsuna."
"How...how did you tutor Tsuna-nii?" Harry asked curious.
Reborn gave him a sadistic smile. "Ah...I had so much fun tutoring Tsuna. Let's see, I of course shot him many times, electrocuted him, I used to blow him up when he would answer questions incorrectly or took too long to answer. There was so many fun punishments for Tsuna."
Harry's eyes practically bugged out comedically as Reborn listed Tsuna's punishments. The raven-haired boy wondered how Tsuna-nii survived all that. He had to concede that Reborn might have been worse than the Dursleys. Though Tsuna had talked to him before that Reborn might have been rough with him but he did it to try to teach him and that deep, deep down Reborn truly cared for Tsuna and his welfare and that was the difference between Reborn and the Dursleys. Tsuna-nii had also warned him that many of his family tended to behave violently around each other and gave Harry advice on how to deal with them. Most of them would never really hurt each other (permanently at least).
"Would you like me to try them on you?" Reborn finally asked.
Harry shook his head frantically at the question. "I'll be good and pay attention. Promise."
"Good. You need to be worthy of being a Vongola." Reborn said but he keep the rolled up newspaper handy and their lessons continued with Harry putting in more effort.
When he was finally released from Reborn's lessons Harry could not find Tsuna and his anxiety increased. He found Gokudera in Tsuna's office grumbling and filling out a large stack of forms. When Harry hesitatingly asked about Tsuna, Gokudera merely told him that Tsuna was, "Busy dealing with the bloodthirsty skylark."
That did not help assuage Harry's anxiety at all though it did peak his curiosity. How could a skylark be bloodthirsty and why would Tsuna-nii be busy dealing with a bird? Without really much more he could do in trying to find out if Tsuna-nii was alright, Harry decided to watch some television. He didn't feel as if he could concentrate on reading a book today.
It was about twenty minutes before dinner when Harry finally saw Tsuna coming back to the house. He rushed out to meet his beloved brother figure only to stop in shock and horror. Tsuna looked worse than Harry did after Dudley and his gang caught him or when Sir got mad at him. Tsuna had bruises and scrapes all over that Harry could see. Some of his clothes had tears in them and blackened edges that look like they'd been burnt. There was also the acrid smell of smoke lingering around him.
"Tsuna-nii! Are you alright?" The little boy exclaimed as he rushed over to Tsuna and began looking him over worriedly. Harry bit his lip not knowing how he could help his injured brother.
Tsuna blinked in surprise as the little boy ran over to him and rather than giving him a hug as he had become accustomed to receiving now that the child's arm was healed (thanks to the magical potions) and his cast removed (thanks to Reborn), Harry stopped short and looked at him with concern. Tsuna almost slapped his head as he looked down at himself. He was so used to being and being seen in such a condition after training with either Reborn or sparring with Hibari that he completely forgot that Harry would have never seen him in such rough condition before. Giving the boy a reassuring smile and draping an arm over his shoulders and squeezing it comfortingly, Tsuna replied, "I'm fine. I was just training with Kyoya. He's one of my family. You haven't met him yet, so I should introduce you to him."
Tsuna waved to someone behind him and Harry was startled to find a man that looked to be in similar condition as Tsuna with bruises but instead of scrapes he had what looked to be minor burns. The man had hair as dark as Harry's and sharp, feral steel-gray eyes. The man moved like a one of the hunting cats Harry had seen on TV, silent, confident, and with a lethal grace. Harry had not even noticed the man entering.
He did instinctively know though that this man was responsible for Tsuna-nii's injuries. He mustered his courage and glared at the man. The gray eyes looked him over before giving him a sharp nod and turned to Tsuna saying, "He's weak but has potential. You will need to make the small animal stronger if he is to become part of the pack."
"He's six, Kyoya. Not many civilian children are strong when they were six. You don't count. You weren't really a civilian." Tsuna retorted rolling his eyes and added silently to himself or a normal child.
"Hn. You will have someone train him."
"If it is determined that it is in Harry's best interest to stay with us, then yes, Harry will be trained. Now please don't scare him too badly while I make introductions." Tsuna conceded before turning and giving Harry's shoulder another reassuring squeeze, "Harry I'd like to introduce you to Kyoya Hibari. He is the head of my security which means he is the one that is in charge of keeping me and everyone else safe. If he orders you to do something do it. He is one of the people you are safe to be around even if I am not here, like Reborn and Hayato. Though for now you should mostly stay out of his way until I'll tell you more about Kyoya and what you should not do around him."
Harry looked at Tsuna dubiously. Mr. Gokudera was always glaring and seemed annoyed, but this man was much scarier. Sort of like Reborn, but with less restraint. However, if Tsuna-nii said the man was family then he was probably like Reborn, someone Tsuna-nii trusted completely. He stopped glaring at the man and quietly offered, "Nice to meet you Mr. Hibari."
"Hibari is fine, small animal." Hibari told him before moving past him with a surprisingly gentle pat on his head. "We will talk later omnivore."
Tsuna let out a relieved sigh as soon as Hibari left. With another smile Tsuna told Harry to go wash up before dinner before going off to tend to his injuries, shower, and change. Despite all the new arrivals over the past few days, dinner was still only Harry, Tsuna, Reborn, and Gokudera. Tsuna explained about the others' habits when he caught Harry looking around for them. A maid was sent to the third floor with dinner for Hibari, and Tsuna himself would deliver dinner to the inventors later.
After dinner, Harry was instructed to go read in his room. Tsuna apologized for not being able to spend the evening with Harry, but he had important things to discuss with Hibari. He did promise to show Harry the special buildings that had appeared out of nowhere tomorrow afternoon however.
AN: I have to say KHR has so many great but quirky characters that writing all of them and keeping them in-character is a bit tiring. I hope I have done them justice. How did you like Kyoya's entrance?
I know that the story is moving slowly but honestly my favorite part of most stories is the characters and their relationships and coming to care for them more than the plot even. That will reflect in my writing in that I will spend time building relationships and allow plot to go at a slow pace. Unfortunately I have a short attention span and writing is something that I get bored with quickly. I'm starting to reach the point that I'm tired of writing (hence the longer times between updates) even though I still am interested in this story and come up with ideas/scenes but the writing the scenes out or connecting them into a coherent story is getting harder and harder. Please bear with me in this as the updates may take longer to come out. I will continue as long as I can but I much prefer reading to writing (so much less effort and I am lazy).
