Chapter Ten
The elevator slowly rose, the silence in the elevator was getting on David's nerves. He was lying in Shepard's arms with his eyes shut but he knew all eyes were on him.
He pondered what to do now. Agreeing to be a part of the Alliance now put him in the permission of being prosecuted under their laws. He didn't want to go to prison, not after all he had been through. He didn't come this far just to have it destroyed.
What he did to Javik was not the best thing he could have done for his very fragile image to the rest of the crew and the rest of the Alliance if they found out. He had to do it for his own personnel self. He loved his mother deeply and he regrets every minute that he was away from her.
In the end he would have had to leave her eventually, she couldn't live forever. Even though it may seem as though he had, now living a totally different life compare to the one he once lived.
"How can I get myself out of this mess?" he thought to himself. "I can't stay here to be treated medically so I need to find a way to keep serving as humanity's shield and sword but on my own and do my own little part".
"This galaxy already has one saviour, Shepard. I need to stay out of her way and let her do what she thinks is right. I shouldn't interfere with events that are on the way for Shepard to control. I'll do what I can on the side, watch her back so to speak. She can have the glory, I don't need it".
"I've already had mine. No one here understands what I did, what I sacrificed, what I accomplished. They all just see me as a child, true I act like one but only as a way of covering what is really going on around us all".
"But how can I get out of here?".
The elevator bumped to a halt and the doors opened with a hiss. He felt the motion of walking as he pictured in his mind where he was on the ship and wondered how many eyes were now watching him and judging him
He felt Shepard's grip on him loosen and for a moment panicked but realized that she was only placing him on a hard, cold surface.
He opened his eyes slowly seeing nothing but a bright light, the emotionless expression on his face must have shown to the half dozen people standing around him.
Shepard motioned them all away, expect for Karin and Liara who were scanning him intently. Shepard came back a short while later and placed a hand on his burnt chest and nodded.
"David, you have my gratitude for what you did and I'll be mentioning that in my report to Admiral Hacket, but at this time I must place you under arrest for murder and you'll be confined to quarters once doctor Chakwas releases you from her care".
Shepard turned and walked away.
David just shut his eyes. "Thank you Shepard, for everything but I won't be here for long so I wouldn't bother if I were you".
"EDI, can you please dull the lights" said Liara.
"Liara I need those lights to see what I'm doing!" complained Karin.
"I'll provide the light Doctor, the lights in the mess here are much brighter than in the med bay, David probably can't see a thing".
"Wait a second…what was that planet that we had that secret staging area on. We lost it so early in the war I almost completely forgot about it. We captured a strange Prothean ship that was of no design we had encounted before".
"Liara, take a look at his DNA reading, do you see anything strange?" asked Karin.
"This can't be right. According to this reading it's not what it should be. It's like its mimicking what it should be" replied Liara.
"It was in the Attican Traverse…can't remember the name of the bloody planet though".
"It's synthetic but it's not compatible with human physiology. So how is it working then and not killed him?" said Karin.
"Look, scan his bones. Some kind of implant that by the looks of it runs through his entire bone structure" said Liara.
"The Marauder…that ship we captured off the main Prothean fleet. The planet was where we hid it to use for a big push out of the Artemis Tau Cluster. Now that I'm aware of the reapers, it must have been them who more than likely interfered. That whole base might not be there but it's my only shot at this time".
"The skin due to this synthetic blood has also been affect and seems to have a very high cell regeneration rate. All the internal organs, Brain included plus eyes and hair seem to be unaffected by the synthetic blood. Those implants seem to be counter acting the blood so it's used in the body as normal blood would. Strange idea who ever came up with this" said Karin.
"David mentioned that a lot of the technology that they were using was Prothean. Probably means they were using poorly reversed engineered versions of it to get it to work on humans".
"My top engineering team at the time was working on it when we lost contact with the planet. There last transmission said that they had figured out every system on the ship and it was defiantly a prototype. It's now my best bet to get to that ship".
"It's strange that none of this showed up when I scanned him initially when he came on board. His ordeal in the engine room must have stirred up at few cells so to speak" replied Karin.
"If my calculations are right, he'll be healed back to one hundred percent in about thirty-five minutes if his cells maintain this rate of regeneration" stated Liara.
David quiet causally got up, throwing his legs over what he now knew as the mess hall table. Karin and Liara were a bit in shock at him even breathing let alone sitting up.
"EDI, commander override authority Jenkins, tango, foxtrot, sierra, one. Lock out all consoles, grant access to me only and take control of the helm".
"What are you doing?" yelled Liara.
"Well since I'm about to be charged with murder, arrested and thrown in the prison. I'd say this is what we call escaping" said David, looking over his shoulder at Liara.
"You killed someone in cold blood, what did you expect?" asked Karin, who was now standing in front of David blocking him from getting off the table.
"Admiral Jenkins, lock out complete and the ship in now under your control" said EDI.
David nodded and politely pushed Karin aside, standing up and headed for the elevator with Liara following close behind. "Very good, set a course for the Attican Traverse. Once we reach our destination scan for high levels Neutron radiation, it should be coming from one of the planets. Once you locate it set a course".
"Orders received and acknowledged" replied EDI.
By this point David had reached the elevator door. Liara came running up next him, grabbed him by his should to turn him around and slapped him across the face.
"What do you think this is going to do? Huh? The Alliance will hunt you down and won't leave you alone till you're in a cell doing hard time or they find you dead".
David pushed Liara away. "I won't be going anywhere with the Alliance thank you very much. No one, not even you would understand why I did what I did to Commander Javik. He was responsible for thousands of my people dying slow painful deaths and if it wasn't for that mystery enemy that show up, which must have been the r
Reapers, which took large portions of the Prothean's attention from us he would have done a lot more than what he had already done" said David yelling.
"So why keep fighting then? You officially took the last Prothean out of existence and killed the last of an entire species. From my point of view and from what you have told me, what is there left for you to fight for?!" yelled Liara back.
"The entire galaxy!".
Liara stood there in shock, no expecting him to say that but expecting him to say something that would have only benefitted him and him alone.
"I have a chance again to do what I have always done, it's all I know and It's to save lives from people or things of universal evil intent on wiping out life for no reason what so every. I may be seen as no better given what I did to Javik but if you had been there to see what he did, you may be thinking about me in a different way to what you are now and if you had seen what I accomplished in doing for my people, you would know that if anything…my intentions were good".
The elevator hissed out and Shepard lurched forward tackling David to the ground and punching him clear in the face.
"Give me back my ship you little asshole!" screamed Shepard.
"Oh fuck. Do I have to do that whole song and dance again, someone start writing down these great speeches of mine down. It would save a lot of effort in trying to explain everything I do".
Shepard grunted and punched him again. "Give me back my ship or so help me I'll through you out the air lock".
David coughed loudly, black blood pouring out of his nose. "Commander, once we reach my destination and I have what I want at that destination. I will more than happily give you back your ship. But until then, it will take more than just idle threats to get me to do anything" said David, thrusting his head forward knocking Shepard head over heels rolling back into the elevator, smashing into the back of it with a crash.
He jump up encompassing her in his still undetermined abilities. Liara who watch the whole spectacle, pulled out her pistol and pressed it against David's head.
"Put her down David, now" said Liara firmly.
"Only if she'll stop punching me. Consider this usage of the ship as repayment for me saving all your lives less than an hour ago…or have we all forgotten that little fact?".
"Liara" spoke Shepard. "Put your gun away".
She dropped it slowly, just in case Shepard change her mind and ordered her to blow David's head off.
Shepard looked at David. "David, this is the only favour you ever in your measly little insignificant life get from me, is that understood?".
David rose an eye brow and dropped Shepard to the ground. He placed his hands behind his back. "You need to work on your threatening technique a bit more" said David as he headed for the port observation room. "Would be happy to give you a few pointers". The doors shut behind him with a hiss.
Liara walked up to Shepard. "Are you ok?".
Shepard grunted and gestured Liara onto the elevator. "Fine, we need to find out where we are going and we need to contact Hacket".
