Within the following hour, the original group of waiting heroes had expanded to include Batgirl, Robin, Damian and Wonder Woman. Superman had flown through in a blur, his x-ray vision having been required to help the doctors see into Dick's chest. No one had seen Batman come out yet and they anxiously awaited his appearance. Wally resisted the urge to fidget or pace, knowing the potential damage he could cause with his speed pacing. It was Conner who broke the silence.
"Why haven't we heard anything yet," he growled in frustration. M'Gann placed her hand on his arm to calm him.
"These things may take time. There is no way to know what could have caused him to begin coughing up blood." Wonder Woman spoke in a way that was matter of fact, but still calming.
"TT," came Damian's sneer. Wally glared at him.
"Who decided to bring you along demon?" Damian glared right back.
"I made the decision myself. Someone has to keep an eye on him."
"Oh like you care so much?" Wally was silenced by a knife embedding itself in the wall beside his head.
"Damian," scolded Batgirl and Diana.
"No!" He snapped, his fear and concern for his eldest brother causing his emotions to go out of control. "How dare you try to judge the level of concern I feel for Grayson! You know nothing of the hell he has been through these past months, you selfish pig. Do you have any idea the number of times he almost broke under the strain? Any idea of the burden he carried? And he had no one he could turn to besides us. Why was that? Where were you when he needed your support?"
Diana reached out and gently touched Damian's shoulder. The boy, though having been trained as an assassin at a young age, was still just that. A boy. She had come to care for all of Batman's adopted children as her own and the in turn had come to accept her. She gently turned him around and held him to her, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist. Kaldur opened his mouth to try to defuse the situation, but was interrupted by the opening of the main hall door. Superman walked through and everyone jumped to their feet.
"How is he?" asked Robin. Superman sighed and rubbed the back of his neck.
"It was touch and go for a bit. Dr. Leslie is cursing herself for letting Nightwing talk her out of doing chest x-rays in favor of letting him sleep. He has contracted pneumonia on top of all of his other injuries," he looked at Artemis. "The blood you saw this morning was caused by broken blood vessels in his lungs. They stopped any further bleeding, but the biggest concern now is with his ribs. There is a large amount of strain being put on his chest between the damaged ribs and pneumonia. The doctors are getting him resettled now."
"Can we see him?" asked Roy. Superman shook his head.
"Dr. Leslie is going to limit the number of people allowed near him in order to prevent further complications and reduce the risk of germs." The man of steel looked at Diana who still had her arm around Damian's shoulders. "Batman has asked if you will take Batgirl, Robin and Damian to Dick's room. Everyone else, he says you will be able to glance in on Dick tomorrow through the window."
Though the team wanted to protest at the restrictions put in place, they knew it was for the best. As they headed towards the cafeteria, Batgirl and Robin lead the way to Dick's room. Damian hesitated by the door as they sanitized their hands. Diana waited with him while the two superheroes went in to see their friend and brother.
"You know it is okay to be afraid for him." The amazon whispered softly.
The boy said nothing, but nodded after a few moments. Batgirl and Robin didn't stay long with Batman and Dick, having been called out for a mission. Diana followed Damian into the room. Bruce sat in a chair beside Dick's bed. The sight of his oldest brother caused Damian to freeze. He had seen Dick yesterday, but somehow this was different. He could hear the rattle of his brother's strained breaths and saw a sheen of sweat on his forehead. Bruce held out an open arm to his youngest son. Acting completely unlike his normal self, Damian entered his father's embrace and looked at his brother closely.
"He's going to be fine Damian. Once he is more stable, Dr. Leslie said he can be moved home to the manor." Damian nodded at his father's words and slowly reached out to touch his brother's hand. It felt somewhat clammy, yet still strong.
"I will make sure Pennyworth has his room set up properly with his requirements. No doubt Grayson will be staying with us for several weeks," grumbled Damian. A raspy sound came from the bed. The trio looked at Dick to see his eyes slightly cracked. He squeezed Damian's hand.
"Thanks Dami," he croaked.
"Quiet Grayson. You sound like one of Titus's toys." Bruce smirked at the thought of the black great dane he had gotten for Damian.
"Now Dick, you need to rest," said Diana, placing her hand on his foot. He nodded and drifted back off. Bruce stood up, pulling his cowl back over his face. He looked at the amazon.
"Will you stay with him for a bit? I am going to take Damian home and make a few calls. I will be back in an hour or so." Diana nodded and took his seat. Turning, Batman placed a hand n his youngest child's shoulder and together they headed home.
