Chapter 10

The Fight

Inside Tsubaki's apartment

Sam's eyes glazed over as he stared out the window, having been bored for a long time. The owners had already left, and he was left with nothing to do. He slowly rose from his chair and walked to the kitchen. But Sam wasn't hungry.

He was antsy.

Truth be told, he was a guy who always had to be doing something. He hated doing nothing. Sam was always playing games, out on a job, or hanging out with friends of his. He couldn't do nothing.

He sighed again, sitting back down, and waited around more.

What I really need is a fight, Sam thought. He wanted to be in good condition again. His rule was: If you could fight, you were alright. But he had no way to do that. He would've done it with Percy, but that wasn't possible anymore. So he had no one to spar with.

Sam heard a quick, impatient rapping on the door. Tsubaki and Black Star had arrived from their day at the Academy. He turned around in his chair to see the duo enter.

"Hey Sam!" Tsubaki said cheerfully. Black Star bounded in after her, his eyes lit up with excitement.

"Hey," Sam replied, only half interested. Tsubaki looked at him, realizing his distraction.

"What's going on? Are you okay?" Tsubaki said.

"Nothing. I just wish I could fight again. I don't like being cooped up like this."

"Well, there's nothing the great BLACK STAR can't fix!" Black Star interrupted.

"Black Star, you can't fix wounds just like... Sam, why are you laughing?"

Sam looked at her, a smile painted across his face.

"Black Star actually can help me," Sam said. "I need a sparring partner, and Black Star would be perfect."

"No!" Tsubaki yelled. "You can't fight in your condition!"

"Of course I can!" Sam replied. "I need to be able to fight again!"

"No! I won't let you!" Sam dipped his head, and Tsubaki had won.

But Sam wasn't ready to give up just yet.

Later that night

Black Star was soundly sleeping, his light snores filling his room, but not enough to reverberate through the house. Suddenly, his eyes flicked open, aware of a second person in the room. It wouldn't be Tsubaki, she never went into his room. He felt a warm hand clamp over his mouth, and he moved his eyes to see Sam, a finger over his mouth.

"What the hell are you doing?" Black Star whispered. Sam beckoned toward the window.

"I need your help, Black Star," Sam quietly replied. They climbed out the window, and with Sam leading the way, started to make their way to the edge of the city.

"What are you trying to make me do?" Black Star said. Sam turned to him.

"I need a sparring partner, and you're the most convenient," Sam replied.

"Well, you'll never beat me. I'm going to be the one who surpasses the gods."

They approached the outskirts of town, their destination for the fight.

"Shall we get started, then?" Sam said.

"Yeah," Black Star stated. He backed up into a fighting position. Sam backed up as well, his left arm morphing into a blade, and drew his sword into his right. The battle was beginning.

Black Star yelled, charging at his adversary. He launched his fists at Sam's chest, but he sidestepped. He slashed with the scythe, followed by another slash with the sword. Black Star flipped back, landing smoothly. He assaulted Sam with a barrage of kicks. He managed to block the attack, but one hit him in the chest, sending him flying back.

Sam crashed into the ground, but quickly got up again to fight. He charged at Black Star with both of his blades. He swung them in a wide arc, forming an X. Black Star ducked under the blades, launching another punch at Sam's stomach. Sam sidestepped again, spinning the back of his scythe into Black Star's leg. He slammed into the ground, but he was back up a moment later. He launched a wavelength blast into Sam's back. Sam flew through the air for a moment before crashing into the ground.

Inside Tsubaki's apartment

Tsubaki's eyes fluttered open, having been jarred awake by the sound of fighting in the distance. She rose up, rubbing her eyes, and walked toward the other rooms.

"Black Star? Sam?" she said. She looked into the other rooms, but they were empty. When she saw the open window in Black Star's room, she knew what had happened. Somewhat frustrated at the two of them, she started to get dressed to bring them back.

Outside Death City

Black Star walked cautiously toward Sam, his eyes filled more with curiosity than anything else. Grinning, he walked toward Sam to help him back, but a small explosion blew him backward. He spun in midair before landing on his side. He looked back at Sam, realizing his arm was now a rifle.

Black Star ran again, this time prepared for the long range attack. He spun through the air, avoiding the shots coming toward them. However, one shot caught him in the shoulder, and he launched backward again. Sam charged at Black Star, but he was ready. He ducked under Sam's slash, and smashed Sam with a direct soul attack. Sam flew back, letting go of his sword. His rifle morphed back into an arm.

Black Star walked over to Sam, and realized he was knocked out. He started to laugh. He heard a scream from Tsubaki, who had just arrived.

"What happened?!" Tsubaki said.

"Well, he wanted a sparring partner," he replied.

"You know he's hurt! Here, help me with him." They lifted the unconscious Sam between them, and started to head home.

"Are you okay?" Tsubaki said.

"Why wouldn't I be? I am BLACK STAR!" he replied.

Tsubaki shook her head.

I hope neither of them are hurt bad, Tsubaki thought.
