Chapter 10: Stories to Tell

Angel and Philippe sat down, on the couch, ready to hear a long story. Christine sat down, on the vanity stool and Raoul and Meg stood next to her. Christine sighed and began.

"It all started when my father died, when I was seven. On his death-bed he told me, that he would send The Angel of Music, when he was in heaven. After he died, Madame Giry took me to live at the opera house. Every day was very hard for me. Without my father, my world was shattered. One day, when I was lighting a candle for my father, in the chapel, I heard a voice. He told me that he was The Angel of Music and my father had sent him, to me. Every night he would teach me to sing. The lesson continued for about ten years, but then everything changed. The year was 1881 and Meg and I were performing as slave girls in "Hannibal"…"

The story continued on for about another hour, or so. Christine, Meg, and Raoul took turns telling their story. Christine then said, finishing the story. "I gave him back the ring and I left with Raoul, as the opera house burned to the ground, behind us."

Philippe and Angel stared at Christine, in disbelief. Both of them tried to comprehend what they both heard. They just heard a story that answered a lot of their questions, all but one. Angel then, spoke.

"This explains a lot, but there is one thing I am still confused about. When you all were explaining the story, none of you mentioned that Meg knew or associated with him."

Everyone then looked at Meg and Christine said. "That's my question also. How do you know him?"

"Well, after the opera house burned down, my mother found him and helped him hide, for a while. It wasn't until my mother left me, by myself one afternoon, when I first met him. I was doing some chores, when I heard a noise coming from the basement. I went to go investigate the sound and that's when I first met him. At first I was scared, but as I got to know him, I felt more comfortable around him." Meg responded.

"But if he was living with you and your mother, why is he back here?" Raoul asked.

"Well about six months after that, my mother overheard that Monsieur Firmin and Monsieur André were going to rebuild the opera house. Erik decided that he couldn't keep living with us and moved back to the opera house. When the opera house re-opened, I took my mother's place as the ballet instructor and Erik went back to his role as opera ghost. After that, everything went back to the way it was, before...well, you know. During this time, Erik met a girl named Belladora."

"Wait, wasn't there a girl named Belladora in the corps de ballet with us." Christine asked.

"Yes, that was her. After the fire she joined a ballet troupe. One day that troupe arrived in Paris and that is when she met Erik. They got to know each other and they fell in love. They got married and they had Dominic."

"So, Belladora is Dominic's mother." Raoul said.

"Yes, she is. After she had Dominic, the opera house re-opened and Belladora became part of the chorus. Four years later Belladora became the Prima Donna and stayed Prima Donna for four and a half years." Meg responded.

"Didn't she perform as Elissa, in "Hannibal" ten years ago?" Christine asked.

"Yes, but a couple of days after that she got very sick, before a performance. A couple of hours later she passed away." Meg said, as she looked at her feet.

"Why didn't I hear about this?" Christine asked.

"Erik wanted to keep it a secret and everyone thought she just resigned. Since then, Erik is still The Phantom and Dominic has been learning from him." Meg said.

Raoul turned towards Angel. "Now since we told our stories, I think that it is your time to share."

"Do I have to?"

"Yes!" Christine, Raoul, Meg, and Philippe responded, simultaneously.

Angel sighed. "I first met Dominic two months ago. I was practicing, when I felt like someone was watching me. He introduced himself and offered me singing lessons. I said yes and he is my voice teacher now."

"Angel, do you realize what is happening?" Christine asked her daughter.

"No..." Angel responded, not really getting what her mother was hinting at.

"History is repeating itself and I am not going to let what happened to me, happen to you. Your father and I are taking you out of here." Christine said.

"No! I am not going to leave. My dreams are finally coming true and I will not let you just rip them away, from me." Angel replied, trying to hold back tears.

Christine opened her mouth to say something, but she felt Meg's hand on her shoulder.

"Christine, don't do that to her. I know you are trying to protect her, but you would destroy her by making her leave." Meg said.

Christine sighed, realizing that her friend was right. Meg walked over to Angel and comforted her.

"Christine let her stay. I promise I will look out for her and nothing bad will happen. Trust me."

Christine sighed again and looked at Raoul. He nodded his head, telling her to say yes.

"Angel, you can stay here, but the second something else bad happens, I won't hesitate to pull you out of here." Christine said.

Angel hugged her mother."Thank you so much mother. I promise you nothing bad will happen."

Raoul put his hand on Christine's shoulder and said. "We should probably leave soon. We have a long ride home."

Angel said goodbye to her family and they left the room, leaving Angel and Meg in the room.

"You should probably get some rest, Angel. This has been a very eventful day and you must be exhausted."

"Yes, Madame Nowell."

With that Meg left the room, while Angel prepared for bed.

The trip back to the lair was a silent one, for Erik and Dominic. Dominic, who was too afraid to speak to his father after what happened, stayed silent for the entire trip. When they finally reached the lair Dominic tried to get to his room, to avoid facing his father. He was almost there when Erik spoke.

"Come back, I need to have a word with you."

Dominic sighed in defeat and turned to face his father. "Yes?"

"What the hell where you thinking, Dominic? You know what happened, to me."

"I am aware of that, father."

"Then why are you doing this to yourself?"

"I don't know. I just saw something in her, something special." Then, Dominic voice was barely audible. "And maybe I'm in love with her."

Erik heard what Dominic said. "In love with her? Do you hear what you are saying? Dominic, this is exactly what happened to me. What are you thinking? Do you think that she will fall in love with you back?"

"Well, yes." Dominic responded, truthfully.

"Even if she did, what will she think when she sees behind the mask?" Erik asked.

On instinct, Dominic touched his mask. 'Maybe he's right.' Dominic thought, to himself. Erik saw the defeated look, on Dominic's face. Erik felt bad, for making his son feel bad, but he didn't want him to get his heart-broken. Erik sighed and started to walk away.

"Dominic, I am only trying to help you. I don't want you to get your heart-broken, like mine was." Erik said.

"But mother loved you, even after she saw what was behind the mask." Dominic finally said.

Erik stopped and sighed. He started to rub his temples. "Go to your room, Dominic. We will continue this conversation, in the morning."

With that Erik walked into his room and slammed the door shut. Dominic headed towards his room, but stopped. He waited a couple of minutes until he heard his father playing on the piano. Dominic grabbed his cloak and started to head towards a passage, that lead him above ground. He couldn't take the gondola, for the fear of his father finding out he left. He would not be happy, especially if he found out where he was going.

Angel sat on the vanity stool, as she took off the tiara and brushed her hair out. She looked at her reflection, in the mirror. She looked pale and she had dark circles under her eyes. 'No wonder Madame Nowell to me to get some rest. I look horrible.' Angel thought to herself. She got up from her vanity stool and started to walk towards the bed. She almost reached the bed, when she felt like someone was watching her. She turned to face the golden mirror, not only seeing her reflection, but someone else's.

"Dominic?"

Then the mirror opened and Dominic stepped out. Angel started to walk towards him.

"What are you doing here?" Angel asked.

"I never got to congratulate you, on your performance tonight. You did amazing and you looked beautiful out there."

Angle blushed."Thank you, but I would not have been up there if it wasn't for you giving me lessons."

"Oh, I almost forgot. I brought something for you." Dominic said.

"What is it?"

Dominic then handed Angel a red rose, with black ribbon tied around the stem. Angel gasped, at the rose.

"It's so beautiful. So you are the one who left the rose, on the vanity."

"That was me. The one I left you earlier was to wish you good luck for the show."

"Then why did my parents freak out when they saw it?"

"It used to be my father's way to show that he was pleased, with something. I just adopted the idea."

"Okay, now I understand why they would freak out. With all that happened to them."

"Look, I am sorry about what happened today. I should have known that he wouldn't leave your family alone." Dominic said, as he sat on the couch.

Angel took a seat, next to him. "Dominic, you couldn't have known what would happen tonight. Besides because of this little 'incident', I finally found out what my parents were hiding from me and I realized that you are always there for me."

They both looked at each other and smiled. They looked away and sat in silence, for a while. Then Dominic spoke. "So, what do your parents think of you living here, knowing that my father is still here?"

"Well, at first they were angry, and then they decided to let me stay." Angel said, finishing her sentence with a yawn.

Dominic realized that he was getting in the way, of Angel getting her sleep, got up from the couch.

"Well, I will leave you to your rest and we will start our lessons again, in two days time." Dominic grabbed her hand and kissed it. "Goodnight, Angel."

Dominic walked back towards the mirror, when he felt a tug on his hand, turning him around to face Angel. Angel then hugged Dominic. Dominic not knowing what to do stayed completely tense. Then, he put his arms around Angel.

"Thank you." Angel said. "Thank you, for everything."

They stayed in their embrace, for a while and then separated.

"Goodnight, Dominic."

"Goodnight, Angel."

With that Dominic went back behind the mirror and closed it. Angel sat back on the vanity stool and held the roses that Dominic gave her. Angel sighed and thought back to all that happened that day. Adriana quit, she became Prima Donna, she had her first performance at The Opera Populaire, she saw her family, she met The Phantom of the Opera, she found out her parents big secret, and she had a really nice conversation with Dominic. She put down the roses and headed towards the bed. As she lay under the covers, she realized that tomorrow all of her friends will ask what happened, after they left. All she can tell them is there are just too many stories to tell.
