Susan woke up after getting barely a few hours of sleep. Her aunt was still asleep next to her so she climbed out of bed slowly so she didn't wake her. She quietly went downstairs and thought about the previous night. Haley was so nice. Someone caused her serious pain to make her scream like that. Who though? Was it her relatives? Voldemort? The list of people the dream could have been about was much too long for Susan's liking.
She was going to do everything she could to make sure the list didn't get any longer. Her aunt could protect Haley at home but Susan decided that she and most likely the other loyal Hufflepuffs would protect her at Hogwarts. It would do Haley no good to face Voldemort alone. Again.
"Hey, you okay?"
Susan turned to see her Aunt was behind her.
"Better than Haley…"
Amelia gave her a sad smile, "She'll be alright. She's strong. You heard. She slayed a basilisk."
Susan gave her aunt a small smile.
"I'm going to see if she's up. Get Pinky to make a light breakfast for us. Haley shouldn't eat anything to heavy yet."
With that Amelia headed up to Haley's room and lightly knocked on the door. She was surprised when the door opened to see that Haley was already dressed and ready for the day.
"Good morning, sweetheart. How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine," Haley answered hoarsely while staring at the floor. She obviously still embarrassed about what happened the previous night.
Amelia put an arm around her shoulders in a comforting manner ignoring Haley's violent flinch. When she realized it wasn't a violent gesture she relax slightly but was still fairly tense in Amelia's embrace.
"Come along deer. Breakfast will be served soon."
Amelia guided Haley to the dining room where they found Susan waiting. They took the same seats as they had the previous evening so Haley was in between the pair.
They had barely sat down when food appeared on the table and a house elf apparated in front of them.
"Ah, Pinky, I would like you to meet Haley Potter. I have adopted her so she will be residing here with us."
"Oh it is a pleasure for Pinky to meet new madam master Potter! I is Pinky!"
"Um… Hello Pinky. Please just call me Haley."
"Oh such a kind madam master she is!"
"Thank you for breakfast Pinky," Haley quickly said turning a very visible shade of red from the compliment that amused Amelia and Susan. "It looks delicious."
Pinky's face lit up and she turned to Amelia and said, "I like her," while jabbing her thumb in Haley's direction.
Amelia smiled, clearly amused at the exchange and said in a fake whisper to the elf, "So do I."
With those last words the elf left and they turned to the food laid out before them. Pinky had made them oatmeal, fruit salad, yogurt, and toasted bagels.
Amelia and Susan began to serve themselves but looking at Haley it appeared that she didn't know what to do. So Susan grabbed one of the bowls of oatmeal, added some berries, milk, and sugar and put it on the plate in front of Haley before preparing a bowl for herself. Haley looked at her confused and almost didn't see Amelia handing her a yogurt cup and bagel. Now focusing on Amelia's actions she only saw Susan pouring juice into her glass in the corner of her eye.
Then the two turned back to their own plates and began eating. When Haley saw Amelia nod towards the plate food Haley decided it would be safe to eat what they gave her.
After eating about half of what they gave her Haley couldn't take another bite. It upset Amelia to see how little Haley had eaten but didn't mention it. After she and Susan finished eating as well the three went into the living room where Amelia curled up on the sofa with her book while the girls sat at the coffee table and worked on some homework.
After two hours later Susan was getting bored and noticed that Haley had already finished her Potions essay.
"Want to play chess?"
Haley gave a shy nod and Amelia smiled as the girls put their work away and pulled out the game.
"So Pinky really liked you," Susan teased as she moved her knight.
Haley snorted and said, "I usually have that effect on house elves," before moving a pawn.
"So you have met house elves before?" Amelia entered the conversation.
Haley shrugged, "Actually I've only met Dobby."
"Dobby? That name sounds familiar," Amelia thought for a moment. "Wait, isn't that the Malfoy's elf? I remember Lucius whining about him being a horrid elf and having to free him out of incompetence."
"Well, Lucius Malfoy lies," Haley stated moving another pawn. "Dobby would make a great elf for anyone. He was just a horrible master."
"Then why would he free him?" Susan asked.
Haley smirked, "'Cause he's kinda an idiot and I tricked him."
Amelia closed her book and leaned forward towards the girls resting her elbow on her knee and her head on her fist. "Okay this is a story I gotta know," she said smiling.
Haley shrugged, "It's kinda crazy and I don't think you'd believe me."
"Try me."
Haley sighed, "Well, it started last summer. Uncle Vernon was having a dinner party and I was supposed to stay in my room and pretend I didn't exist."
Amelia growled at the mention of Haley's mistreatment but allowed her to continue with her tale.
"Well, when I got in my room I found this odd creature on my bed. I had never seen one before but I quietly asked who he was. He said he was Dobby the house elf. When I asked why she was there he said that he had to warn me that bad things were going to happen at Hogwarts and that I couldn't go back to Hogwarts. He couldn't give me details and started hitting himself with a lamp. I heard my uncle coming up the stairs so I hid him in the wardrobe. My uncle… uh… told me to keep the noise down," Amelia was sure it was more than just a simple request to keep the sound level down but didn't interrupt, "When I asked why he was telling me this it was because of the whole Girl-Who-Lived junk. Something about elf rights. When I refused to say that I wouldn't go back to Hogwarts he… well he got kinda desperate. He also let slip that he had been stealing my mail all summer so I would think my friends didn't care about me and I wouldn't want to go back."
Susan didn't like that. Hannah and her sent mail all summer long and she didn't think she could manage without some kind of contact with the outside world.
"Anyways Dobby used a levitation spell to destroy my aunts dessert for the dinner party. My uncle played it off and told the guests I was unstable but then I got a warning about doing underage magic from the ministry. One of the guests was scared of birds and freaked out at the owl that flew straight into the house."
Amelia winced slightly.
"Anyways that was the first time I met Dobby," Haley said clearly sliding passed the punishment she received. Amelia knew she was leaving things out but didn't want to push her. "You remember Ron and me flying the car to Hogwarts?"
To Haley's surprise Amelia burst into laughter, "Oh, yes, I remember!"
"Well, the only reason we did that was because we couldn't get onto the Platform. Dobby had blocked it so I couldn't get on the train."
"I always wondered what the point in that was," Susan said thoughtfully.
"Yeah, it was pretty crazy. Were you at the Quiddich match between Slytherin and Gryffindor?"
"Of course! That game was crazy!"
"I had a bludger tailing me the entire game. It actually broke my arm but I still managed to catch the snitch. Turns out Dobby sent the bludger after me."
"Why?!" Susan asked.
Haley shrugged, "It was his crazy way of trying to save my life. He didn't want me near Hogwarts because he knew the Chamber of Secrets was going to be opened."
"Wait! How did he know?" Amelia asked suspiciously.
"I'll get to that in a minute. Anyways people had started getting attacked by the chamber of secrets monster while this was happening. Then it accidently got out that I was a parseltongue because I stopped a snake from attacking Justin but they thought I was egging it on."
"I told them you wouldn't!" Susan stated angrily.
"Well after the whole finding the chamber and killing the basilisk thing I was in Dumbledore's office when Lucius Malfoy entered with Dobby trailing behind him. I then learned that he was Dobby's master. While Malfoy was talking to the headmaster Dobby was making some weird movements pointing to the diary that had possessed Ginny and that I destroyed with the Basilisk fang. I realized what he was trying to tell me so when he left I took the diary and stuffed it in my sock that was covered in slim, ink, and blood."
"Eww! What was the point in that?" Susan asked in disgust.
Haley just gave a small smile, "I chased Lucius down and shoved it into his hands. He quickly ripped that sock off and threw it aside in disgust. I told him how I knew he gave Ginny the diary because he had went through her used books in Diagon Ally and that's where she found it. Then he went on for a few moments telling me how I'd," Haley raised her fingers and put air quotes around the word, "Meet the same sticky end as my parents."
"That bloody bastard!" Amelia growled.
"It wasn't until he was walking away did he realize Dobby caught my sock."
"Oh Merlin! He accidently freed his elf!" Susan shouted.
Haley nodded with a satisfied smirk. "Then he tried to attack me for tricking him. He was only able to say the first part of the curse before Dobby made him fall down a stair case."
"What spell was he gonna use?" Susan asked as Amelia grabbed her glass of water and took a small drink.
"Well, I don't remember ever hearing the wording before. Plus I only had half of the incantation so I had no luck in the library yet," Haley explained. "It did sound familiar though. Not like I had heard it in class or anything but sort of like a distant memory. I don't know. That sounds stupid."
Susan shook her head, "No it doesn't. Maybe Aunt Lia knows. Being the Head of DMLE she sees all kinds of spells and curses."
"Yeah, Haley," Amelia said making a movement to set her glass back on the table.
"Well, all he said was Avada."
Amelia's glass fell and shattered on the floor causing the girls to jump. "A-Avada? L-like Avada K-Kadava?"
The words haunted Haley's memory. She saw a blinding green light and a man's silky laugh along with a woman's horrified scream.
"V-v-voldemort! He… he said that! The… the night… IT happened."
Amelia grabbed the girl by her shoulders and as calmly as possible said, "Haley, Avada Kadava is more commonly known as… the killing curse. Lucius Malfoy was trying to murder you."
