Chapter 9

Liv (Aideen) POV

I follow Eric and Peter flanked by guards on all sides. It almost makes me proud to see the head of Erudite so frightened of a simple person like me. We head around corner after corner until I feel dizzy and confused by all the wall that look exactly the same. Finally Eric stops in front of a clear door and pushes it open to reveal the hustle of a normal Erudite lab as Jeanine calls orders and finishes up the final touches.

"Well, what are you waiting for. Lie her on the table and strap her down." Jeanine says finally addressing to group of soldiers surrounding me. Immediately they all turn toward me and grab me at the same time. My fight or flight response, now heightened by my time in Dauntless kicks in as the seemingly infinite number of hands reaches out to grab me. I am able to get a few hits in before they are able to contain me and Peter approaches only to land a solid punch straight on my nose. A sickening crack fills the room as my nose breaks and I have to work hard to restrain a scream. The soldiers holding me quickly move to place me on the table and strap me down so that I cannot even move my head.

"Well then." Jeanine says as she composes herself after my brief act of defiance. "First we will attempt to get the names of other Divergent rebels out of you. That way if you do not prove helpful to my experiments in a serum for the Divergent we will have no need to keep you around any longer. The blow you just received from the impulsive Dauntless leader in training will not be able to compare with the blows we will give you for an uncooperative attitude." She paces the space in front of me as she lays down her conditions.

"Like what." I spit at her, blood spraying from my lips after having dripped down from my nose. "You can't hurt me Jeanine Matthews. I have nothing to be taken from me. Everyone dies eventually, my time is obviously soon, so I am not to concerned with physical damage or pain and you already killed my family. That excludes any emotional damage that can be inflicted."

"Quite eloquent for a hostage I must admit. But as for the emotional side I have not exhausted all my options have I?" She replies pressing several buttons on a keypad as she does so. The screens in front of me light up with images of Bethany, Emily, Flynn, Hawkins, Hector, and even Six and Four. My breath hitches in the back of my throat and I realize I have allowed myself to be to frivolous. I have allowed myself to be attached as a friend to these people and now they are in danger. "So, with these people in mind what Divergent rebel filth do you know of?" My eyes wander past her face to see my friends who are now in danger. Even if I do tell her I can only save about half of them because the other half is Divergent.

Tris POV

The next morning we are informed at breakfast that Eric and Peter have not returned, but they sent a message for the faction.

"Attention all Dauntless faction members and initiates. As of today we are declaring a faction wide hunt for all those who are Divergent. If you have any information at all about someone who is Divergent it is your obligation to report directly to a member of Dauntless leadership. If you are found to be in possession of any information that has not already been reported you will be under violation of a direct order and punished accordingly. As well if you are a Divergent and do not report to Dauntless leadership by the end of the day and are later discovered your punishment will be much more severe. This order is effective as of now. Thank you." Eric's voice concludes and the message shuts off. Almost immediately everyone in the dining hall begins to talk. I hear people taking sides and watch as the whole faction divides into those who support leadership and those who do not within the matter of several seconds. The dining hall then begins to empty. The final stage of initiation is today and everyone seems to have calmed down enough to agree that the initiation is more important at the moment.

"Tris," I turn to see Tobias grabbing my arm. Behind him stands Flynn, Smanda, Emily, Bethany, Uriah, Zeke, Christina, Shauna, Will, Lynn, and Marlene. I nod understanding what he means and the whole group heads off to our apartment. We had recently agreed to tell all our friends about our Divergence and now it is only fair we include them in what to do next. The fear landscapes don't begin for another couple of hours so we decide to make any and all plans now. When we finally get inside everyone lets out a sigh. We all know what could happen to us if anyone found out and the sigh is a collective acknowledgement of that.

"We need to call inside the Erudite headquarters to see if they have any information that could be helpful." Tobias is the first one to speak. He looks at me and then Will. We are the only two with direct connections to the Erudite.

"I'll call first." Will offers to me and I nod in agreement. I don't think that I am ready to face Caleb just yet. We wait in silence as the phone rings. Seconds later Cara picks up. He puts her on speaker so we all hear what she has to say.

"Will! Oh my gosh, thank goodness your okay. The minute I heard of Eric's declaration I got so worried. Is everyone okay there?" She sounds frantic.

"Yeah, we're all good here. Hey we were wondering if you could give us some info on what is happening in Erudite right now?" Will replies calmly.

"Sure. Well right now Jeanine has her newest Divergent catch in the experiments room. I saw the convoy on Dauntless soldiers she commandeered to escort the single girl who didn't look any bigger than Tris to a private testing room. Apparently only Jeanine's most loyal scientists are being allowed to help her in this particular experiment. And... well it appears that Caleb is one of them. I sorry Tris, I really am." She says the last part quietly and I cover my mouth swallowing hard to overcome the shock that my brother is now a trusted scientist of Jeanine Matthews. It's not long before Cara continues. "I do have a little information on what they are doing inside the room at the moment. According to a couple soldiers stationed outside. Jeanine was attempting to get the names of the Divergent out of her by threatening her with consequences such as the death of her friends. I have to go sorry. I can't be caught. I will try to find out more about the situation later, but I have to go now. Bye." The line goes dead and we all sit in silence.

"Well we know there are some people wh are sold down the river no matter what Liv decides to do. Namely myself and Bethany." Emily pipes up after several long and agonizing minutes of sitting in silence. "Possibly Four and Six as well if they are a part of the group Jeanine is threatening Liv with."

"I think we have to go after her. If they are going to kill her it won't be for several days. They are going to have to exhaust all of their options before they give up. That's just what the Erudite do." Will adds in. That's when a knock comes on the door. I head to open it when suddenly the door is forced open and there stands several Dauntless led by Peter.

"Flynn I have been ordered to take you with me to the Erudite headquarters." He announces and steps forward to allow a few of the soldiers to enter our apartment and seize Flynn.

"Wait, you can't just..." Tobias starts.

"Actually I can just take him Four. I have direct orders from two faction leaders and if you don't comply I have authorization to take you into custody as well." Peter sneers back, punctuating his point by spitting in Tobias's face. Everyone stands there shocked, but I spring to action punching Peter in the jaw hard and then running at him again. Before I can get my hands on him three men grab me from behind and force me to the ground.

"Well then," Peter smirks at me. "I am so glad you'll be joining us Tris." He orders the soldiers to haul me up and they drag me from the apartment along with Flynn.

"Wait, don't take her!" I hear Tobias's frantic pleas as we are dragged to a car outside. But before he can reach us, we are already driving away.

Liv (Aideen) POV

I lay motionless on the table for what seems like hours. I outright refused to tell Jeanine any names and in her frustration she sent Peter out with orders. Eric stands above me smiling horribly occasionally landing blows on my stomach or face as instructed by Jeanine. I spit out foul words I learned in my time being factionless at her, but they seem to have no effect. I lay for hours before a soldier finally comes in to whisper something to Jeanine. She replies quietly to him and he quickly leaves only to return followed by Peter and to figures flanked by burly soldiers. They are hidden from my view from Eric who still looms over me.

"Eric," Jeanine calls sharply. "Would you please move so our friend can see her new visitors?" Jeanine says emphasizing friend in a sweet voice that causes me to want to hurl. He moves slowly off to the side to allow me to see the "visitors" who have come. But when I see them my heart sinks realizing Jeanine's threats to my friends are very real and dangerous indeed.

"Liv!" Flynn calls out in horror. I see him taking in my broken nose and the countless other bruises I assume are appearing on my face. Behind him Tris hangs in her captor's arms anger brewing in her gray-blue eyes. Jeanine moves to my side holding a needle full of serum.

"Well now. Since you already know each other, let's begin. I have here an undiluted version of the fear serum. If you continue to resist my simple task of revealing those you know to be Divergent, I will be forced to inject your dear boyfriend Flynn with this serum." I see a gleam of hunger in her eyes before opening my mouth to answer.

Well, there you guys have it. Chapter 9. I will try to update again soon. Until next time, be brave fellow initiates!
