CHAPTER 10 – Chemical Equations and Complications.

All the students line up at the front of the class. Seems like we're getting a new seating plan for Chemistry too! Natsu leans his arms on my shoulder casually,

"Why can't we just choose where we sit..." He frowns and twitches his nose.

"I don't know..." I sigh.

Sir starts naming out names and pointing to our seats.

"Natsu and Lisanna!" Sir calls and points to a desk at the front. Natsu grins at Lisanna and she smiles back as they travel towards the front desk.

"Lucy and Rogue!" Sir shouts to the desk behind Natsu and Lisanna. I walk to the desk. Rogue? That's not too bad.

"Luce!" Natsu whispers behind him, to me and grins like a child.

"Hi!" I wave as I sit down. Lisanna turns around and meets me with a smile.

Rogue just remains quiet.

"Hey Rogue!" I greet; trying to be friendly.

"Hello." He nods.

Everyone is now seated and class begins. I stare at the board blankly; cluelessly as Sir tries to explain balancing chemical equations.

"I don't get this..." I say quietly with emptiness as I lean my elbows on the desk and hold the sides of my head.

"Lucy!" Sir points at me.

"Yes!" I quickly straighten my posture.

"Can you hand out these work sheets?" He asks.

I nod, stand up from my desk and collect the sheets.

I start handing out the sheets starting from where Natsu and Lisanna are sitting. I see them both laughing together.

I place two sheets on their desks.

"Thank you." Lisanna smiles.

"Thank you Lucy!" Natsu grins.

"No problem." I say and walk over to the next desks, glancing back slightly at the two.

"Thank you, Lucy." Erza takes the sheet I hand her.

I smile and hand another to Gray.

Gray takes a look at the sheet and slides it across the table whilst folding his arms.

"Pfft," Gray puffs as he leans and slides down the back of his chair, "I ain't doing that."

Erza's head flicks towards him with wide eyes, "Gray."

"Ahahaha," Gray laughs nervously as he sits up, "I was just...joking..."

I laugh and roll my eyes and continue giving out the sheets.

"Hey, Blondie." Sting says as I place a sheet on his table.

"Hi Sting." I say with uninterest whilst looking at my pile of sheets.

I walk past his desk when my heart starts having a panic attack, "Kya!"

I gasp as I stumble slightly, but regain my balance by gripping onto the edge of the desk for my dear life. I look down to see a foot. I hear a snicker; I look up and see Sting's amused face.

"Sting!" I say with annoyance.

"It's not my fault you didn't see my foot." Sting comments with a silly skittish smile.

"Just when I was starting to think you were alright..." I murmur to myself with disappointment.

"What was that Blondie?" Sting leans in trying to hear.

I shoot him the evils and finish handing out the sheets then return to my seat in a huff.

"Are you...okay?" Rogue says calmly as he analyses my mood.

"Yeah..." I say not expecting him to talk to me.

"Don't worry about Sting, he can't help his stupidity." Rogue tells me casually.

"Yes," I laugh slightly; "I really don't know how you put up with him."

"I'm sure most people wonder the same with you and Natsu." Rogue compares as he fills in his sheet.

"Oh?" I ponder and blink at him, "I guess so..."

I stare back down at my sheet; as if staring at it would make things clearer. But it didn't.

"I don't get this..." I moan again (like Natsu) and rest my forehead against the desk; deciding I have done enough for today's Chemistry lesson.

"You may be over thinking it." I see Rogue glance at me then back to his sheet. I sit up with a lost look.

He looks back up from his sheet. He shuffles closer to me and I become aware of the distance between us, as he stretches his hand over to my sheet. He processes the first equation and I stare at him; waiting.

"You need to adjust the number of some chemicals until you get equal numbers of each atom on both sides of the equation, for it to be balanced." He explains as he gestures to the equation of Cu + O2 → CuO.

"How many oxygen atoms are on this side?" He asks as he moves his pen around the left side of the equation.

"Two." I state focusing on the equation.

"How many oxygen atoms here?" He moves his pen to the right side of the equation.

"One?" I say with slight uncertainty.

"Yes. So how many Oxygens do you need on this side to make it equal?" He asks.

"Two." I nod.

"So you need to put a two here." He writes a two, "Because you need two whole compounds of Copper oxide for two oxygen atoms to be there."

"Why can't you just put a two at the end?" I point and knit my eyebrows.

"Because, it's a compound. You can't have one copper oxide with two oxygens and one copper. It doesn't work." He explains further.

"Oh..." I nod slowly in understanding.

"But now how many Coppers are on this side?" He asks circles the right side of the equation.

"Two." I say.

"And how many on this side?" He moves his pen back to the other side of the equation.

"One." I say.

"How many Coppers do you need for this side to be equal?" He asks.

"Two!" I exclaim with a growing smile, "I get it! Both sides have an equal number of Oxygen and Copper!"

He writes a two then simply places the pen down then slides back to look at me, "And you've done a balanced an equation."

I beam a smile at him and throw my arms around him with excitement in the spurt of the moment, "Thanks Rogue!"

He stiffens and then I actually realize what I was doing.

"Sorry!" I blush with embarrassment as I immediately leap away. Why do have to be so stupid? All I did was figure out how to do Balancing Equations not win the lottery.

"Y-You're welcome." He does a shy smile back with slight surprise.

I work away busily at my sheet together with Rogue until class ends by the ringing bell for Break.

"Bye Lucy." Rogue stands up and tucks his chair in as he's already packed up.

"Bye!" I smile back pausing from putting my pencil case away, "Thanks again." I thank him again as he walks away to the door.

"Lucy!" Natsu sighs, stands up and moves closer to my desk, "You always take forever!"

"Sorry." I continue to stuff my book in my bag.

"Natsu!" Lisanna says with disciplinary, "Tuck your chair in properly."

I look past Natsu to see his chair pulled out and placed wonkily.

"Fine..." He rolls his eyes and grabs the chair and stuffs it under the table.

I shake my head, "Oh Natsu..."

"Are you done Luce?" He asks.

"You guys go ahead then." I stand up and shift my bag onto my right shoulder. I glance at Lisanna, wondering if she'll notice this little opportunity.

Natsu sighs, "But Luce-"

"Are you sure, Lucy?" Lisanna blinks innocently.

"Yeah." I wave my hand dismissingly without care.

"Let's go, Natsu." Lisanna tells him then looks back at me.

"Fine." Natsu follows her out of the door.

"Blondie," Someone calls, "Earth to Blondie!"

I shift my gaze to Sting standing in front of my desk.

"What." I narrow my gaze.

"What's up with you?" He raises an eyebrow.

"I saw your face." I remark.

"Ouch." He winces fakely.

"Anyway, I didn't come here to just say hello, don't flatter yourself" Sting rolls his eyes.

"So why don't you leave? Class has ended." I say quite emptily as I zip up my bag and begin to stand up; without giving eye contact.

"Are you really that upset because I tripped you up?" Sting says with derision.

"N-No!" I snap my head up, "You're just annoying me."

"Wow, saying this to the person who caught you when you blacked out yesterday?" Sting says trying to make me feel guilty. I blush instantly.

"Natsu caught me too. But thanks." I fold my arms and glance away; remembering seeing a pink blob before I got knocked out yesterday.

"Sure, whatever," Sting dismisses, "I'm surprised you haven't said anything about our Biology project."

My eyes widen and I jolt towards him, "I forgot!"

"Well," He smirks.

"We'll work on it tomorrow?" I suggest.

"Saturday?" He looks at me surprisingly.

"Yeah." I nod.

"At your house...?" Sting raises an eyebrow and then does a devious smile.

"No, at the Library." I say. It's a public place, so I'm not alone with him. I won't tell the others, like before they'll make a big deal right? Besides Natsu won't show up a a Library.

"When?" He asks.

"Twelve?" I suggest.

"Too early!" He shakes his head. Early?

"One then! That's not early!" I huff.

"Whatever you say, "Sting shrugs, "Blondie." He ruffles my hair,

"Hey-"I fumble and then strolls out of the class.

"What?!" Natsu and Gray gape in unison, "We have rehearsals after school?"

"Yes." Erza simply nods.

"But-But it's a Friday..." Natsu winges.

"Your point is?" Erza raises a brow.

"We have three weeks ya know, Erza." Cana reminds.

"Three weeks can go incredibly fast and we have to get it perfect," Erza says momentously, "Have you forgotten that we are going to be performing at the Spring Festival?" Erza eyes everyone.

"Erza is right." Levy nods in agreement.

"Yeah, but that's because you're not even in it, Levy..." Gray complains.

"Are you implying that I'm wrong?" Erza's voice becomes harsher as she stares at Gray.

"No, no he wasn't implying that." I interject before Erza gets on her bad side.

"It'll be fun anyway~" Mira gleams.

"Fun?!" Gray's eyes widen in such disbelief.

"It's stupid." Natsu comments once again.

"Aw, no it's not Natsu." Lisanna shakes her head.

"It's because he always wants to be centre of attention!" Gray remarks.

"Dya wanna repeat that stripper?" Natsu and Gray glare at each other.

We all stand up and prepare to depart to class.

"See you at Lunch!" I shout to Natsu, Cana, Mira and Lisanna.

Gray, Erza, Levy, Mira and I had French.

I sit in my place next to Erza.

"Lucy," Erza starts quietly.

"Yes?" I turn to her with a questioning look.

"W-Well-you see-" She somewhat shakily as if she was nervous.

I nod slowly and stare at her, "Well?"

She clears her throat and closes her eyes, "Jellal, asked me to meet up with him on Saturday..."

My eyes widen and my mouth curves into a smile, "What a date? When?"

"Sshh!" She demands, I withdraw immediately. "N-no, to sort out Student council matters and he asked yesterday..."

"Right..." I say slowly, "It is obvious he likes you. Remember Valentine's day."

"Well, I don't know that for sure. It was anonymous." Erza remains oblivious.

"So it's a date?" I reaffirm.

"No." She states.

"Is it just you two meeting up?" I ask.

She nods.

"I will tell the others, but I was going to ask you for help..." Erza was still quite nervous.

"Help?" I wonder.

"O-on what to wear." She forces out, "I was going to ask you to accompany me shopping..."

"Sure, but when, I mean we have rehearsals after school today." I smile; happy that Erza came to me for 'help'.

"Jellal said to meet him at Happy's at 2:30, so I was thinking perhaps in the morning?" Erza expounds.

"On Saturday?" My panic begins to rise as I remember that I planned to meet with Sting for the project.

"Yes, I will ask the others to come too." She nods.

"Well—"I hesitate.

"Is something wrong? Are you busy?" She questions curiously.

"No." I shake my head surely to erase suspicion.

"Good." She smiles and continues writing French vocabulary from the book.

"I'm so tired..." I complain.

"I know but we have rehearsals." Lisanna reminds.

"Just hang in there." Mira smiles.

"You'll be fine." Erza says surely with no sympathy; almost sounding demanding.

"Can't we just go home and start rehearsals on Monday?" I suggest quietly.

"No, not everyone is free on Monday. We also need practice in order for it to be perfect." Erza says ever so seriously.

"You know what they say, Lucy, practice makes perfect!" Cana mocks in a fake happy-go-lucky voice.

"Don't push it Cana." I warn and grit my teeth.

"Love rival..." I can hear a low rumble in the background.

I ignore her. But seriously, I'm scared she is going to kill me.

We girls enter drama; the boys (including Loke today) seemed to already be there.

Natsu shifts uncomfortable away from Sting, "You're here!" He says somewhat surprised/startled.

"Yeah..." I eye him confusingly.

"My dear Lucy, I'm sorry I am not the prince charming." Loke rushes to me.

"Hi Loke..." I sigh at his usual behaviour.

"Everyone let's get rehearsing!" Erza raises her voice and crosses her arms demandingly.

We started from the top and went through with the script. Things are good until the ball scene...

"Ouch!" I flinch as Gray steps on my toe, yet again.

"I'm sorry." He apologizes as he looks down, "I'm not used to dancing..."

"I noticed." I sigh restlessly and Lisanna stops the ballroom music.

"Stripper here can't even dance!" Natsu interrupts. We pause and look to Erza, Gray releases my hand but his other hand remains on my waist and mine on his shoulder.

"Gray can't dance for sh*t!" Cana retorts.

"This wouldn't be happening if I were the prince!" Loke places a hand on his chest dramatically.

"It seems like Gray needs to be taught." Erza places her hands on her hips and Gray's face begins to scrunch up.

"Perhaps I shall teach you." Erza starts then stiffens her voice, "Gray, come here."

Gray pulls away hesitantly and walks towards Erza.

"Just follow me." Erza states as they both get into position, although Gray seemed uncomfortable. Lisanna clicks play and the orchestral music fills the room again.

Suddenly Erza starts spinning Gray around like a spinning top.

"Erza, I don't think that's the way." Mira sweat-drops.

Cana begins laughing.

"Yeah, I think Gray is getting dizzy..." I bite my lip.

Lisanna stops the music. Erza comes to a halt. Gray topples to the floor.

"What was the problem? I was showing Gray the easiest dance to master." Erza says with confusion.

"But try not to kill him..." I point to Gray.

"Erza, that's not exactly ballroom dancing..." Mira laughs. Erza turns towards her and also sees everyone nodding.

"I see." Erza crosses an arm across her chest and holds her chin in thought.

"We have a Prince Charming that can't even dance!" Cana claps. Sting and Natsu snicker.

"It's harder than it looks you know..." Gray stands up and scratches his head.

"I guess that leaves us with no choice then," Erza speaks up, "Lucy will have to teach him."

"What?" Natsu and I shout.

"Is there a problem?" Erza deepens the stare.

"No, no." I reassure her desperately.

"But what if I can't learn..." Gray frowns.

"You will learn." Erza says demandingly in an indefiable way.

"It's not that hard." Natsu shrugs.

"Oh yeah?!" Gray scoffs, "Well I'd like to see you try."

"Fine! I will!" Natsu shouts and stomps over to me.

He awkwardly shifts his hand to my shoulder and I place my hand on his.

"Natsu..." I stare at him, "You're not supposed to put your hand on my shoulder."

"But that's what you're doing." He frowns.

"Because, that's what the girl is supposed to do..." I sigh; this is hopeless.

"So where do I put it then," He pouts and moves his hand in a hassle up my waist. And then he slides his hand in an inappropriate area. So I slap him away from me and back away.

"Not there!" I blush furiously as I hold myself defensively.

"Ouch!" He moans.

I see Cana fall to the floor whilst holding her stomach in laughter.

"Pervert!" Gray shouts.

Erza glares at Natsu with surprise.

"It was an accident!" Natsu bleats.

"So Natsu," Cana walks over to him then cups a hand over her mouth, "How'd it feel?"

"Cana!" I shout.

"Gosh, you guys make it look so hard to dance." Sting interrupts with boredom.

"We are wasting time!" Erza shouts.

"Lucy," She turns to me, "You'll have to organise a time when you can teach Gray."

"Fine..." I sigh.

"Now everyone continue!" She claps her hands.
